Mix completely loses touch with reality believing he and Nerissa have some sort of connection, and a future.

It's very dark, and pretty bleak, one of the darkest tales to come from the pen of the great Ruth Rendell.
The ending is so bizarre, almost amusing, and really at odds with the remainder of the story.
