Daddy Yankee's 'Neon' Series Glamorizes Hustle Culture
mendymariamKE20 October 2023
"Neon," the reggaeton series, debuted on Netflix on October 19th, featuring a cast including Jessie Camacho, Rose Eshay, and Daddy Yankee, who also serves as an executive producer.

Daddy Yankee's 'Neon' series falls short of capturing the real essence of hustling. While young people hustle for their dreams, it's far from glamorous.

There are no piles of cash, extravagant strip club celebrations, Porsche rides, or encounters with A-list celebrities with private plane journeys, all within a mere 24 hours.

The series consists of 8 episodes and follows the journey of three friends who relocate from a small Florida town to pursue their reggaeton dreams in Miami - led by Santi, the artist.

While the premise holds promise, the series begins to lose its grip as it progresses. The storyline takes a turn for the worse, becoming increasingly implausible by the fourth episode.

It's safe to say that you might not find it worthwhile to finish all the episodes, as the narrative becomes unbelievable for a group of young hustlers.

The story of their struggle could have been presented more convincingly. The way they stumble upon record deals, private planes, strip clubs, bundles of cash, and endless parties seems far from reality.

It's cringeworthy and not worth following the storyline, although the reggaeton music in the series is a highlight.

The trailer hinted at potential sex scenes, intimate moments, and romance, but unfortunately, none of that materialized in the series. Including such elements might have added value to the show and made it more engaging.

As it stands, it's rather lacking in entertainment value and comes across as somewhat dull.

The series had immense potential for compelling storylines.

The struggles of the record label owner in his failing marriage could have been a gripping narrative.

The unjust dismissal of the assistant was utterly nonsensical.

The powerful LGBTQ theme in the series was not adequately explored. NEON could have been vastly improved with the inclusion of these promising storylines.

6.4/10 worth watching, doesn't deserve a 5
ingwueric30 December 2023
Okay guys it aint entourage but it was still fun to watch. If you're a fan of miami, reggaeton, and a hustle come up story it was entertaining and has some dips and dives. The actors did their best, there's some nice cinematography and also some of the scenarios in it were pretty realistic. I'd rate this like a highschool drama level of complexity, it doesn't go super dark like entourage. But it was fun, netflix on average only buys series they think are at least decent. Don't go in with mega high expectations, just enjoy the vibe. The visuals and acting and dynamic i think were pretty enjoyable.

Painful and disappointing

Warning: Spoilers
I wanted to love this. I wish I could write that I felt empowered and represented but there was no connection, nothing to ground me and it was hard to feel anything at all besides bewilderment. I was wondering what the heck is happening? It was also confusing because in one scene Santi is getting high and having meaningless sex, and in another scene he acts like he cares about the art of reggaeton. The acting was horrible and not believable at all. It's a shame because the music and scenery wasn't bad. It's also weird how they were going through some ladies drawers and found guns and drugs in the lady's office. Like what would prompt them to do that. Overall as a Latina I want to support our work but how the heck does any of this make sense? How can Santi be so superficial and sex charged in one scene but then act like he's deep and introspective in another.

Wish version of Entourage.
lurpak23 October 2023
I feel like this was written by millennials. In what world would these people get a music contract, their action, the claims, the idealism of how the industry works...it's the writing< it's so bad. Shame because everything else is fine. There's two ways of looking at this, either you use it to show why writers today don't deserve the pay they claim, or you use it to show what you get when you don't pay for professional writers.ironically, it portrays an internet star trying to make his way in the "real" world of the music industry, while not being taken seriously by his peers. If this was made for YouTube, written staring and directed by a tuber then you could say it had potentials for such a person. To find out this had real producers, etc. Well! So my conclusion, is as the headline says "the wish version of Entourage" if you haven't seen entourage< skip this and go watch that, unless your particularly into the music scene, because Entourage is the actor version.

Neon is a 7/10 I highly recommend it!!!
MylesWhite23 October 2023
I highly recommend everyone to watch this show on Netflix. This show was released on my 29th birthday on October 19th. It's very hilarious entertaining and the music is something unique. I loved the characters.

My main problem is that these reviews on here are very negative or mixed. Just be more open minded!!! I just wish people would appreciate a more diverse storytelling. This show inspired me to keep achieving my dreams. As well as reflecting on the current music business. I loved the look of Florida with the aqua ocean, neon nights, colorful cars which are very cool.

I hope Neon gets a Season 2 because I'm tired of good shows but getting enough recognition. If you're reading this please go watch Neon. You'll just feel better about yourself. 7/10.

The show's cinematography is nothing short of breathtaking, utilizing vibrant colors and innovative camera work to create a futuristic world that feels both awe-inspiring and unsettling. Neon's salvation is it's music and cameos
erinsm31 October 2023
Warning: Spoilers
As a non-Latina who is a huge fan of Latin culture, I was hyped when the trailer for Neon dropped. I was thrilled to see that (I thought) this show wouldn't focus so much on the hustle culture that is promoted in other series revolving around the world of hip hop.

Boy, was I wrong. As good as lead actor Tyler Dean Flores is, his character Santi comes across as a completely self-absorbed and immature young man who grows to care more about his fame and how he can use it to gain money and women than his best friends, who he calls his «corrillo», or his clique. The sheer hubris and naivete exhibited by Santi and his friends Ness and Felix is what seems to actually make this funny.

Things only get worse when they encounter Mia, a young woman who presents herself to them as a powerful record executive when she is really the executive's secretary. Believing that Mia will get Santi a record deal, the corrillo begins to celebrate prematurely, beginning a web of complications and lies that get them all into pretty deep trouble when they are introduced to a woman posing as a rival A&R person named Gina, who has much more sinister ties, in a storyline that seems to have been left as a thread for a potential season 2.

It would be better if Ness' only storyline was not that she is a meek lesbian disaster of a character who waits until around the fifth episode to grow a spine and stick up for herself and her friends (not a good sign given that the season was only eight episodes). Also, both Mia and Santi's storylines are crazily unbelievable. There is such a thing as suspension of disbelief, but in my opinion, the show pushed that entirely too far when Santi rocketed to attention over night with no real team behind him. And you expect me to believe that someone among the corrillo wouldn't try to look Mia up to see if she was who she claimed?

For me, the saving grace of the show comes in its music, and in the cameos made by some of my favorite actors, including Santiago Cabrera as Oscar, the scheming real A&R with a secret heart of gold.

Overall, worth a watch, but it's pretty much mindless entertainment. I hope a season 2, if it gets one, will be better.

Doesn't deserve the low ratings it has
honeytos0226 February 2024
The amount of low rated reviews are quite unnecessary. Hard to believe that a show with cringey storylines and more plot-holes than one can ever keep track of, like Dynasty, has a 7.3 - but this has such a low rating?

Visually, the show is great. Amazing shots, vibrant colours. Love to see the varied experiences of different characters, and the poetic justice received by respective characters. Great diverse cast too.

The common criticism that things look like they're coming to easy for the lead... make no sense? This is supposed to be an entertaining story about a man who's having a rollercoaster experience with his music career. What's with current day viewer bases having an obsession for negativity and failure. Ugh.
