For once; the stalwart stumbles
drjineesh3 February 2013
Being an ardent Mani movie follower and an avid AR music lover I couldn't afford to miss Kadal, and didn't. Expectations ran high; and for a while with a thunderous opening sequence and a riveting exhilarating first half, the film held fort, only to fall away gradually in the second half and by the climax sequences and the anticlimaxes, the collapse was complete.

The film does start off well with the much Mani Ratnam traversed- social discard, orphaned child growing up in a low key environment - path, not very dissimilar to Nayakan or Thalapathy, and promises a lot while establishing the premises of how the light of good and the claws of evil manipulates the rawness of youth and innocence of love. But one couldn't escape the feeling that the master story teller having penned the film, had failed to draw starkly the lines of the characters, a task which he is usually so accomplished at, in particular that of the heroine and to some extent that of the antagonist. Incomprehensible is the heroine's character, and unjustifiable the antagonist's; both of whom the audience fail to identify with, and the method in the madness unbelievably unacceptable.

The film does go on however, shouldered by excellent performances by the artists, Arvind Swamy the stand out, Arjun, an admirable transformation in spite of a few hollow links, and a very commendable Gautham Karthik.

To his rescue Mani does have an ever reliable AR Rahman whose magic outscores the film itself, though with Nenjukkulle and Moongilthottam, it appears one song too many, but then no one is complaining; and the dependable Rajeev Menon whose visual treat had the audience in trance for more than a handful of occasions, with the hitherto unseen splendorous portrayal of Kadal(The sea) in all its enormity, tranquility, majesty and menace.

An appropriate end to the story seemed out of reach of the director, and the climax appeared tweaked, more an emotional compromise than a logical culmination; thus ruining the foundation of the story itself; and leaving many stones unturned and many fates undecided.

The film ends however, not before the audience is enthralled by some magical Mani moments - the burial scene, the tape recorder scene and the birth scene to name a few – but sadly you go back taking a few moments with yourself; and not the movie.

Not as Expected!!

KADAL ( 2013 )

Saw this on the release date itself. Normally it doesn't happen with Tamil movies as far as my movie watching habit is concerned.

KADAL is a pretty simple story. The life of a boy who grows up among the illiterate fishermen on sea shores. But that's not just about it. its also the story of good v/s evil fight. Good represented by the priest ( played by Aravind Sami ) and evil represented by rich bad guy (played by Arjun). That's not it about it its also about how love can change someone into good and bring them close to god. Now, that's it about the movie.

All clichéd plots, no unseen situations or anything. KADAL is a normal average movie. There is nothing mind blowing or supergood story wise. But in terms of making there are few things I really loved.

Songs of a movie play a huge role in pulling the audience to it. KADAL album is already a huge hit and there would be people coming in also to see those beautiful songs. I was also waiting for it to come on screen and I am totally surprised!! The sound track of the movie had different genres of songs and I was wondering what placement or picturisation they would have in a movie related to sea.

Right from the moment when my favorite track MAGUDI unfolded on screen, I realized that the experimentation begins then onwards. When you see the songs with the movie, I felt all of them doesn't blend well. But if the songs are viewed alone, they would look good and different. I liked the ' adiye.. enne enge ne' song picturisation very much for that was never what I had imagined that song would be like. MAGUDI also could have been better.

As always, Rajeev Menon's cinematography is beautiful and stunning in the climax scene. The climax scene in the sea reminded of Hollywood movies like Pirates of the Caribbean. I was so stunned to see that quality of vfx making it so real!!

Coming to the actors in this, KADAL marked the debut of two star-kids. KARTHIK's son GAUTAM and actress RADHA's second daughter TULSI. They could not have asked for a greater opening than this. Gautam has some allu arjun mannerisms but other than that he looks promising. Tulsi needs an acting workshop/course before she moves on . it was so delighting to see the wonderful actors ARAVIND SAMI and ARJUN on screen again.

KADAL has very few characters only and they were very limited in the script. It seemed as if they had not much to do in the story. Screenplay could have been much better and powerful. May be the Director Sir wanted to concentrate more on the emotion side of the story rather than the actual story.. who knows??

I am no one to talk about it.

Kadal (U) TAMIL --------- my Rating : ★★ DISASTER

STRENGTHS : - * Music and Background Score : A.R.Rehman is a king of melodies well composed my favourite is moongil thootam * Cinematography by Rajiv menon was handled perfectly extraordinary shots between the sea waves ..... * Direction : obviously man of silence has its own style ...Starting 30mins is best .... * Performances by Arjun and Arvind Swami

WEAKNESSES : - * Story and Screenplay : very slow revenge story ....it is not a romantic entertainer... * Casting - Actor and Actress : are very young and bad performances ..need to improve a lot....... * Dialogues : too much disgraceful words featuring christians as the main plot .....

FINAL VERDICT : - * On the whole .... the movie is a waste of time....U will be feeling to leave the cinema hall after a few minutes of interval .. please avoid and catch some other good movies ......

Gautham Karthik, Thulasi Nair Kadal is a drama film directed by Mani Ratnam. It is based on the lives of the fishermen living on coast of Tamil Nadu. This film marks the comeback of actor Arvind Swamy back on the big screen and also the debuts of Gautham Karthik and Thulasi Nair.

Another excellent Mani Ratham's film
vikneshsiga15 February 2013
I do not understand some critics do not like this movie. This movie was prefect. The cast in this movie was amazing. Even a small role was realistic. I never seen Arjun act this realistic. He really acts like a real devil. The ending visual effects was amazing. It was a experience like the actors were there. The music was once brought back by A.R Rahman. His music always bring us happiness and it does it again in this movie. The background music was again amazing. The Cinematography was good. The camera starts in a very amazing angle. The story was one of the amazing story ever. The story looks like a real man's life. Overall, Kadal is a realistic movie. The story,Cinematography, the cast and the music are amazing.

Final verdict:10/10

Went expecting to see a bad movie! Turned out to be downright horrible!
moviewatcher5-597-9091271 February 2013
I must admit I went to watch this movie with very low expectations! I mean for past many years Mani Ratnam has been churning out bad movies with his previous outing bombing big time! I used to be a big fan of Mani Ratnam. Notice I said 'used to'. That was the time when he made great movies like Mouna Ragam, Nayagan, Agni Natchatram, Anjali, Idhayathai Thirudathe, Thalapathi and finally Roja! Any hardcore Mani Ratnam fan will freely admit these movies were the best he ever made. So when was the time I stopped or rather reduced being a fan of Mani Ratnam. It was with a movie called Thiruda Thiruda. Prior to that many felt Mani can never go wrong and any story he films will be very good without any doubt! Thiruda Thiruda changed that mindset. It proved even great filmmakers can go wrong! After Thiruda Thiruda not many of his films could match upto his best. I feel Iruvar sort of matched upto it but that movie went through lots of cuts that the final product didn't make any sense and one couldn't help feeling they watched a half baked product. So apart from Iruvar almost all of his movies have been downright horrible. He has been lowering the bar with every movie he has released after Roja!

So now you understand that I went with zero expectations to watch Kadal. I felt like I don't think he can make a badder movie than Raavan! Alas! Alas! How wrong I was! This one is far far worse than raavan so much so that Raavan seems like a classic in comparison! Why Mani Why do you keep lowering your standards as a filmmaker with every new one you make! Are you having some anger against the audience that you keep torturing us with every new release of yours?

I was also under impression Mani was a secular cum atheist person. I don't think prior to Kadal he has ever touched a subject related to god in any of his movies! But kadal felt like a 3 hour marathon on Christian beliefs and it didn't help the movie in anyway except leaving one in shock that a person like mani made such a film! There have been many movies prior to this with Christian backdrops - Bobby, Saagar come to mind instantly but those movies didn't preach religion! It just so happened Christianity was incidental to the movie and not the main issue about it! But Kadal seems more like a movie preaching Christianity with some characters thrown in to justify it! By the way let me mention I have nothing against Christianity. I am a secular person who believes and accepts all religions as they are! So if anyone felt offended by my saying the bit about Christianity in this movie I apologise if I remotely even hurt your feelings in anyway. It's just that when you go to watch a movie advertised as a love story made by a filmmaker like mani ratnam you just don't expect to see such things!

Another feather in Mani's cap.
vs-jesse16 February 2013
Wow...was the expression when the movie ended. Had I taken all the negative reviews seriously I would have missed a great movie. Only a seasoned director like Mani Ratnam can give such a beautiful film. After watching Kadal one can see why Mani Ratnam is a huge name in Indian cinema. If you have come to a conclusion that I am a huge Mani fan you are absolutely wrong. But this movie has changed my opinion about him. I was really really disappointed about some of his previous outing. At the same time I have not forgotten some of his great works like Agni Nakshatram, Mouna Ragam, Keethangali and Alaipayuthey. I like this Mani a lot not the one who made movies like Ravanan. I am well aware that this movie is not well received by his fans. But if you go by their reaction you are certainly going to miss a fantastic work.

Everyone in his crew has given their best shot including the new comers Gowtham and Thulasi. And what a powerful comeback for Arvindsamy. For Arjun it s a very different role as he has never tried negative characters in his film career I guess. Ponvannan is amazing as always. I don't need to say much about the technicians as Mani Ratnam would hire only the best in the industry. Beautiful camera, beautiful locations and some beautiful songs. So drink Kadal sip by sip.

Unconvincing characters; Stereo typical 3rd grade movie.
chella_p21 February 2013
A very mediocre movie from Mani. Unconvincing characters, story that has holes like Swiss cheese and narration that is typical of 3rd grade movie.

Bergman (Arjun) and Sam (Aravind) separate after Sam exposes Bergman of his illicit ways. Bergman vows to avenge Sam. As with most Mani's movies there is the theme of relationship story presented in the backdrop of a larger issue. In this movie, the love story of a young pair in the backdrop of the conflict between good/angle (Sam) and bad/devil (Bergman).

Such as sinister, evil person Begman – he kills his mentor, wife, throws away his child – avenged to get back at Sam – but does nothing for 15 years, until a chance meeting brings them together. Not convincing.

Thomas (Gautham) and Beatice (Thulasi) are the young couple. Thomas is the only character that is well developed and convincing. The under tone of wanting to be loved, the anger of being orphaned, and the arrogance of growing up all is well melded. However the acting is quite mediocre. The experienced guys – Arjun and Aravind definitely attempted to produce good acting – but end up just average. The new comers – Gautham and Thulasi are just so, so.

What's up with Beatrice's character? A mentally under developed girl, training to be a nurse, delivers a baby – with just another guy from road, while the family of the women watches on. Mani wants us to believe that? At the beginning, why was she in the hospital?

Why would the protective Mother reveal that Beatrice is Bergman's daughter?

Too many stereo typical movie moments – Sam removing bullet from Bergman with a simple tweezers; Beatrice helps child birth without any other elders help; Beatrice has no memory of her childhood, but once she visits her home her memories return. Why would Sam climb up the bell tower to get away from his assailants?

Everything else is great – beautiful locations, fluid cinematography, music, etc. Many scenes of the ocean and fights in the ocean has a heavy CGI feel – at least for me.

Seems like Mani has made this movie on auto pilot – not paying any attention to the critical parts of any movie – story and storytelling.

Not worth the time. Stereo typical 3rd grade movie.

Everything is Soulful

KADAL(2013)

This is the film that I am waiting (a completely uncompromised original film) since long time (after Amritha) from Mani Ratnam. I feel it is near to his own heart and have true literary values and philosophy of life. It is more deeper than it seems. We must surrender to its magic to know it. It is an experience which I never imagined. Total surprise. Totally unique. Totally revolutionary. The film touches the soul, inner cores of heart. What an unbelievable experience...

Mani Ratnam is auteur...we shouldn't expect same from him again and again. Sometimes he is beyond our imagination and ability of understanding. We should be preparing for a total surprise.

What I mostly liked in this film is music of life, sadness in life, divinity in life. Way of life is mysterious. Now we can believe one can be transformed; one can grow in a life time. The film gives that hope to humanity. The world needs love and forgiveness. The people talk about these things are rare. That is why we respect Mani Ratnam. He expressed these true values of life in this film. They are subtle and deep. Sometime difficult to grasp.

Boy fishing scene is beautiful and beautiful and climax fight is technically superior and fearful. He used highest technical values for this fight. And it is not only a fight; he incorporated in it philosophy, and positivity of life.

Man is far higher entity than what he imagined about him. There is greatness in him hidden. Life will bring it out, sometimes forcefully. It is the way of life. We compare this story with world's greatest writer and philosopher Leo Tolstoy's short story "Saint Sargai", for its philosophy and literary standards. This kind of films are rare in India.

Great music, great visuals and sheer poetry…it is KADAL.

Good vs Evil
Vihari_Krishna20 December 2014
Warning: Spoilers
Story : It is an atypical "Good vs Evil" story told in Maniratnam's perception.

Performances : The casting is superb. Everyone acted well but Aravind Swamy and Arjun shine in their roles. Gautham Karthik makes a fine debut.

Story-Screenplay-Direction : Story is nice with some interesting twists thrown in. Screenplay is little dragging. It is absolutely dull in the scenes following Sam's conviction. The concept of hero joining Bergman is unconvincingly told. I thought hero is avenging. Direction is nice. The scenes like Thomas taking the newly born baby into his hands and looking at Jesus Christ's idol are excellently shot and they show the class of Maniratnam.

Music & Background Score : Music by A.R.Rahman is godly. It is divine, sweet, eclectic, soul stirring and adjectives are insufficient. Every song is a gem. This is easily the best album from Mani-ARR combo since "Alaipayuthey". Background Score is excellent again. Rahman has bought in the global music feel to the background score. The orchestration is superb. In short, the music and background score out shines the movie itself.

Other Departments : Cinematography by Rajeev Menon is topnotch effort. Watch the climax and know how good the cinematography of this film is. Editing is okay. Artwork is excellent.

Final Piece : This is typical Maniratnam movie. It is dark, silent and has little commercial elements. But Maniratnam's fans like me may like this film. I liked it. Plus points are some extraordinary scenes, excellent music, performances by Arjun and Aravind and world class cinematography. Minus points are over all slow pace of the movie, unconvincing told concept of hero joining Bergman and lack of universal appeal. Watch it with academic interest.

Mokka Movie in my Life time
kannanmuthiah2 February 2013
I went with lot of expectations and it turned on to be a worst movie ever watched in my life. I think Mr.Maniratam given full control to Mr. Joe Stanley (the director of Yaaruku Yaaro). The only thing which is OK in that film is acting of Mr.Arjun and Mr.Aravindsamy. The movie might have been much better if there is no hero and heroine. The guy who speaks funny - English in the film is very much appreciated. Too much characters in the film is another disappointment, AR Rahman has done his duty. The song Adiyae is the worst ever I watched, A song -repeated 3 times is way too much. Mani always spoils good songs with dialogues in between like usery poguthey in raavan, and here Nenjikullae. Overall I give 2 points for efforts of AR Rahman,Arjun,Aravindsamy.

Kadal: A Tale of Two Paths
amar-nathanson4 February 2013
Forgiveness or Revenge: When faced with the criminal destroying everything you stand for, which path would you choose? What leads to spiritual enlightenment, following a preacher formally educated in a religious discipline, or a peek into a heart filled with childlike innocence. Can a human truly be classified as being God or Devil, or are both entities inside each of us, and only the circumstances dictate who manifests outside? With a biblically inspired tale set in the backdrop of the lives of Christian fishermen in Southern Tamil Nadu, these are some of the questions director Mani Ratnam seems to be asking.

While the ideas of sin, redemption, revenge, forgiveness in cinema have been around since the beginning of cinema itself, the choice of the sea as a backdrop allows the director to use the various moods of Mother Nature to elevate the emotions in the depicted events, and credit, in this regard, is due to the cinematographer, Rajiv Menon. For a movie with seemingly lofty intentions, the actors do not disappoint. Arvind Swamy as the pragmatic priest who uses carrots and sticks to straighten a boy with an adverse past, Gautham as the enigmatic young hero in constant struggle to grapple with his place in the society around him, Thulasi the young convent girl who refuses to grow up, and Arjun, the man who made a deal with the Devil, and would stop at nothing to get ahead, all of them play their characters convincingly. The disappointments in the movie are the under utilization of some songs in the excellent soundtrack, and the final showdown which, although shot splendidly, could have packed a stronger emotional punch, either through better dialogue or by tweaking the storyline. Part of this could have also been an outcome of editing, and one hopes that an uncut version of the movie releases on DVD at some point that better explains these problems.

Following Thalapathy and Raavan, this is the director's third venture to be inspired by a religious epic. While the other two movies were more direct retelling of the Mahabharata and Ramayana, Kadal is not quite a reinterpretation of an epic, but characters and events were certainly inspired by the stories from the Christian faith (the betrayal, crucifixion, resurrection). Is it mere coincidence that the hero, born as a child to a woman named Mary, and constantly referred to as God's son in the movie, sported longish hair, mustache and beard on his thin visage almost reminding us of the Biblical son of God. Of course, if indeed the purpose was make a movie inspired by the story of Christ, then unlike Raavan and Thalapathy, why is religion an explicit element in this movie. Perhaps, since the question posed is that of choosing a path for life, a religious backdrop is inevitable. In a tale about forgiveness, Christianity may have provided the ideal landscape.

Director Mani Ratnam, it appears, has indeed traveled a far distance from his evergreen hits such as Mouna Ragam, Roja, Anjali, where the movie takes you through an emotional journey without necessarily asking you to stop and think about what you just saw. Movies such as Raavan and Kadal have through their sub-textual intent made us question our premises about their stories and possibly, our own.

Lack-luster!
muraleevaidya20 April 2022
Very disturbing movie. Concept is nice but the script is so drab. Love and hate both are emotions and yet the movie did everything but emote (just a sequence of events without true magic anywhere at all). Maniratnam is generally good balancing drama with a subtle concept but this one is a debacle. Movie at best is experimental. Classic example where all other departments (photography, music) scored well but plot is reeling.

After Ravan another Flop for Mani
cmanojkumarc1 February 2013
Warning: Spoilers
It was a big dis appointment for Mani fans. Could really not trace out what he was trying to say/convey through this film. Its neither an entertainment nor a documentary. However waiting till last minute to see something to happen in film remains as an expectations. But all of a sudden the names coming back informing us the film is no more is yet another disappointment but makes us feel good as we have survived to stay in the cinema hall making sense for the money we paid ( only Air conditioned atmosphere / friends( preferably Girl) can only add value to the money we have paid.

No strong message- too many questions circling you when you come out of the cinema hall.

Arjun is fine - but could not his regular acting.

New cast- Goutam keeps shouting and Lakshmi is OK - need to do home work and take care of her physic.

Could not digest when the pool of talents give a film like this.

In my views its not even worth a star.

very disappointed movie
ramanniyan20081 February 2013
This is not the best one from the phenomenal director Manirathnam.Even his past movie "Raavanan" is better then this movie. The problem is screenplay and narration.Cast and crew was given more importance than the story i think.Thats why the movie fails to impress at the end.And while watching movie definitely a question raises in the mind that whether we are truly watching the movie of Manirathnam? because no impact of Manirathnam is seen in the movie.Such a great director fails this time. But the good thing is Gowtham Karthick did excellent job and Thulasi Nair is good. Also Arvind Swamy returns after a long gap should justifies his role with very good acting.Arjun is better in some sequences but worse in many times. The real heroes of the movie make us to sit and watch it are Cinematographer Rajiv Menon and Music director A.R.Rahman.Rajiv Menon did excellent job.Especially songs like "Eley Keechan, Adi-hey, Moongil-totam" are well picturised and music by A.R.Rahman is very good and they are already in chart-busters.Also he did very good BG throughout the movie. So finally i would say that this is not the one we expected from phenomenal director Manirathnam and if you want to see it,just go for Rajiv Menon work and A.R.Rahman's music.Else you just skip watching the movie and see whenever it shown on TV telecast.

Not a good Entertainer
sureshfair12 February 2013
If somebody likes Entertainment movie, this is not the movie for those kind of people. This is not a typical Maniratnam movie. Even the dialogues are not clear as they talk tamil differently. Not able to follow most of the scenes.

Pros

1. Excellent Music 2. Good Character selection (except Heroine) 3. Wonderful camera work 4. Good background music by ARR 5. Excellent Acting by Arun

Cons

1. Lot of filthy words used in many dialogues 2. Not a good story (sometimes boring) 3. Heroine acting is not good.

Wonderful climax fighting. Some of the kadal (sea) locations are superb. Nenjukulle song wasted in movie. This movie is definitely not the best of Maniratnam. Expected a lot from him. I would not say don't watch it, but go and watch the movie without any expectation. Kadal without ARR will not be liked at all by many. But because of Rahman songs, people are able to see the movie. Will wait for Mani's next movie.

Profound catholic message
sagkavin11 February 2013
Its a profound catholic message about Reconciliation, Baptism and Resurrection. The true meaning of sacraments. The director must be deeply understood and touched by the Christian message. All men are called to be saints. Even in the most evil men goodness is present. All they have to do is to explore and find it.

The music is great with A.R. Rahman. Nice lyrics by Viramuthu. Tamil cinema will acknowledge this movie as one of the best ever after ten years, its an usual response time taken by audience to understand what Manirathnam has done.

I am proud about Manirathnam for this movie, for both direction and the message. GOD bless, he is also a carrier of Gospel.

Kadal - Coastal Flavour
indiareel14 February 2013
Visit: http://movies.chennaivision.com/tamil/review.php?id=1177

A story that hardly kindles any interest, a narration that fails to impress and dialogues which heavily remind Neerparavai sum up the hugely expected Mani Ratnam's Kadal.

But for Rajeev Menon's cinematography, which is the big saving grace of Kadal, the flick disappoints movie-goers a lot. And it is doubly so for who love Mani Ratnam's films.

No doubt A R Rahman's music is great as usual. But it fails to gel with a rural story which deals with the lives of fisherfok.

It was more than three decades ago Karthik and Radha made their debut together with Alaigial Oyvadhillai. Now Gautham and Thulasi, Karthik's son and Radha's daughter respectively, have debuted with Mani Ratnam's Kadal.

Both Gautham and Thulasi are good in parts. Considering that this is their first film, all that we can say at this point of time is experience would mould them well.

Aravind Samy is back and he is here to do a character with some different shades. And Arjun plays a meaty (negative) role.

Coming to the story, Sam Fernandez (Aravind Swamy) and Bergmans (Arjun) undergo training to become priests. But over a period of time, they take different paths.

As years pass on, Thomas (Gautham Karthik), an orphan, is showered love and affection by a priest (Aravindsamy). He falls for Bergman's daughter Beatrice (Thulasi Nair). What destiny has in store for them is the crux of the story.

Kadal presents us never seen before locations in a beautiful and tasteful way. A R Rahman has blended the music of the east and west.

Dialogues in Kadal differ a lot from earlier movies of Mani Ratnam, courtesy Jeyamohan. But he could have avoided repeating Neerparavai. Also there is a feel as if we are attending a Christian missionary meeting.

The minus point is the narration by Mani Ratnam. Though the ace director got it right in terms of beautiful locations and best output from the cast and crew, his narration takes the sheen away. At many places, the script moves very slow.

Kadal - Coastal Flavour

Verdict - Poor

A Tale of Fisherman
sarancoolbreeze1 February 2013
Upgrade version of Manirathnam

The thing to talk here is the story. Jayamohan did it once again much separated from Neerparavai. The story narrated by him was done in a single shot where a small child stands up on its own in Manirathnam style "wow".The next thing is the cinematography which makes us to think Hollywood is far behind from Indian film making.Editing and Vfx work makes the film too colourfull and falls apart from the movie.May it pushed the movie back.

ACTORS:

Arjun job looks amazing especially in climax where a Indian health ledger is seen. Aravindswamy with much more boost up carries the movie all over.I thought Mani sir took hero and heroine for a coincidence but he made them to adopt to their character.I am pretty amazed by both their performance. Gautham has his grand father and his father attitude. In a scene where he comes to the church after meeting the heroine"cool". Thulasi expression in mookil thotam was like a half sridevi.

I don't why do they expect a alaipayuthey in a fisherman's life do you think Manirathnam has only love Ideas. At last but not least the AR Rahman music carried all over the movie cleaning your ears We can hear a much more energy since it is a combo from the past.

The only thing that i am disappointed is the audience who are not patience to a slow movie like this.I went to 2 theater and couldn't tolerate those Intelligent genius thinking themselves as Aranofsky creating and giving tips to the director .So whats the fact is if you don't like the movie just shut the f---k up so that other illiterate like us can watch the movie.

So Kadal is a vast ocean for a deep dive or for a gentle swim that in your point of suggestion.on the way for Infinite awards.

Another Ravan in the making
v-udayshankar3 February 2013
Awesome songs, good photography skills & good actors alone cannot make a good movie. The story misses good script, editing & timing for launching the songs. Once again A.R Rahman delivers his part, but Mani fails to show it on the screen. Now I see Mani going along the lines of RGV, once a talented director & now you would not bother to watch any of his movies. First Ravan & now Kadal. Small time directors are making better movies, so what's so special about watching a Mani Ratnam movie?

People watch big budget movies for good entertainment, value for money, to get a break from the horrible week's routine. After watching such a movie you realize that spending 3 hrs of time with your family or at work would have been more productive. Sorry Mani, I had great expectation from this movie, all I can say is that this movie deserves 1 star for your Direction abilities. Had it been a first timer or a new director I would have given 5 stars out of 10. Pls don't waste your precious time to watch this crap.

A promising gem which turns out to be fake !!
squash-raj6 November 2013
Warning: Spoilers
The last Mani Ratnam film which I happened to see was "Kannathil Muthamittal" aka "A Peck on the Cheek" and I just loved that film in its entirety.

This film, however, had flashes of brilliance, promised a lot but falls flat on its face and dies down. You might still like the movie if you keep your analytical mind outside, but do we expect something like that from a Mani Ratnam's film ? The first half was still OK but the second half just dies down completely. After watching this film completely, I still feel the story line was extremely powerful and it could have been made into a pure cult classic but somewhere down the line in order to knit the plot together strongly, they just used poor threads.

A lot of unanswered questions and really unbelievable loops in the story.

  • Beatrice is hospitalized in the very first scene. She runs away and says she doesn't want to get treated. Later, we realize that she has some kind of mental trauma. Oh well OK. That explains. Well really ? A girl getting drips into her body and trying to get herself treated after so many years after the actual occurrence of trauma which affected the brain....

  • Why exactly is Bergman so angry against Sam ? Because he got him kicked out (that too wasn't apparent. It seemed more like Bergman going out on his own wish) from the institution ? And for that he wants to take his life ? Give me a break ..

  • There was a moment in the film where it was all serious drama and immediately the drama part ends and we see Thomas in a boat and Beatrice is around and their own little story begins. How many times have you seen in Indian films, a song which spoils the pace of the movie. Well, here it was a plot within the story which made it fall apart.

  • One scene where Thomas is confessing his murderous sins to Beatrice, Gautham's acting was pretty good. But then Beatrice does something unexpected. She acts cool as if nothing has happened and everything can be written off. Later, we get to know that Beatrice has a mental problem etc, but still the explanation wasn't very convincing.

  • The character of Thomas is so strong but somewhere the character never grows. He is to become a very scared figure and the viewers are just supposed to agree to that by watching a few minutes of him shooting and killing a few guys. Doesn't convince me.

  • The bonding between Thomas and Sam is shown brilliantly. All that is built along during the first half of course. And then the bonding between Bergman and Thomas is also strong but we are just to assume that by watching a few scenes. I just wondered how beautifully different was 'Nayagan' as a gangster movie.

  • During the climax scene, Bergman is talking to his aide and we can see completely dark skies. Moments later, we see the gray clouds. Now, should I assume that the event is taking place at dawn ? Well, the movie isn't without positives of course.

The acting is wonderful. Arjun was Brutal, Arvind Swamy was splendid and even some other characters were wonderfully played. Somewhere, the lead heroine's acting wasn't quite up to the mark but I've seen worse.

A few scenes were brilliant even though they did little to add up to the story line.

You'll still like the movie if you like to keep your brains out while watching a film, but you won't expect something like that from Mani Ratnam now..

Would you ?

Worst movie from Mani Rathnam
karthikeyan-radhakrishna3 February 2013
I am a huge fan of Mani Rathnam and it is normal for me to watch his movies more than once, usually there are more than one element that requires a second watch to cherish -- music, cinematography, abstract narration, short yet sharp dialogues, rather bold characters etc. I wanted to get out of the theater during the intermission on kadal. Mani Rathnam, to me, is great at telling white collar perspective stories-- mounaragam, roja, uiyre, bombay, Kannathil Mutham Ittal etc or at telling the story of the under dog -- dalapathi, nayakan etc. He sucks at capturing the slum atmosphere -- or may he depicts it to perfection that you cannot enjoy it. This movie to me fell under the category, it failed miserably to get me excited about the characters or the story line. Sujatha was badly missed, apparently the crisp dialogues was his contribution and was missing completely. I have a sad feeling that Mani Rathnam might be heading for spiral down like Barathyraja in his latter days. I hope I am terribly wrong.

Deserves to be listed in the Nomination list for Best Foreign Language Film for the Academy Awards.
dkemathas3 February 2013
After Raavanan, Mani Ratnam has returned behind the camera and has delivered us Kadal (English: The Sea), a drama film which revolves the story of the life of Indian-Tamil Christian fishermen. It features an ensemble cast that includes Aravinth Swamy, Arjun Sarja, Ponnvannan, Lakshmi Manchu and débutantes Gautham Karthik (son of actor Karthik Muthuraman) and Thulasi Nair (daughter of actress Radha). The film's score and soundtrack were composed by the two time Academy Award winner A.R Rahman and the voices were lent by A.R Rahman, Vijay Yesudas, Sid Sriram, Abhay Jodhpurkar, Harini, Shakri Sri Gopalan, Haricharan, Chinmayi, Tanvi Shah and rapper Aaryan Dinesh Kanagaratnam. The lyrics were penned by Kaviperarasu Vairamuthu, his son Madhan Karky and rapper Aaryan Dinesh Kanagaratnam. The film was written by Jeyamohan while Rajiv Menon and A. Sreekar Prasad handled the cinematography and editing. It was produced by A. Manohar Prasad and Mani Ratnam.

The film has two story lines that become one. The one features Father Samuel Fernando aka Sam (Swamy) and Bergmans aka Meesaikaaran (Sarja) while the other one features Thomas aka Tom (Karthik) and Beatrice aka Bea (Nair). The film marks a comeback for Swamy. He was last seen in Mani Ratnam's Alaipayuthey which was released 13 years ago. We can say that Aravinth Swamy owns the film even if the main actor is Gautham Karthik. The film's strongest point is the screenplay which was handled by Jeyamohan. The screenplay was simply amazing, specially the childhood scenes of Thomas. Both the child and the teenager who portrayed the younger Thomas have done a fabulous job. Both Karthik Muthuraman and Radha can be proud of their children. They have delivered a wonderful and neat performance. Specially Gautham Karthik. His acting skills, dance skills and action are pretty impressive. Thulasi Nair is natural, but I didn't feel that Beatrice was a suitable role for her. Aravinth Swamy was at his strongest performance after Bombay (1995). He was simply the perfect choice to portray Father Samuel Fernando. Arjun Sarja, the action king who has delivered a bunch of successful action- packed films in the 90's has portrayed Bergmans, the main antagonist. Sarja has played a role with negative shades and has shown us another side of his acting skills. Ponvannan who portrayed Thomas's unknown father has also done a good job.

Rajiv Menon, the cinematographer has pictured the whole film beautifully, specially the songs Elay Keechan, Moongil Tottham and Adiye. You will still have the shots of Thomas as a teenager when he surfs in the ocean in your mind even when you leave the cinema. A. Sreekar Prasad, the editor, deserves to be praised for his work as well.

A.R Rahman, who has been Mani Ratnam's usual composer since Roja (1992) has given the film a soundtrack with different genres. Chittirai Nila describes the difference between life and death, Elay Keechan has a farmer-humpback tune, Adiye has a jazz feel, Nenjukkulle, a romantic touch, Anbin Vaasale, a religious song, Moongil Tottham, a slow tune of Nenjukkulle and Magudi Magudi, a Hip-Hop track which gives energy in the action scenes. Kadal is the third best album of the Mani Ratnam - A.R Rahman combination.

Overall Kadal is a beautiful journey you never want to miss. It is a story that tells us about the good versus the evil. It has emotions, action, love, heart melting music, extraordinary shots of jumping waves, a good message and a small piece of comedy. It may not be a usual Mani Ratnam flick, but if you want to look and experience something different, then Kadal is definitely the right choice.

Strongly recommended for everyone. Specially non-Mani Ratnam fans.

Kadal - Sincere attempt by Maniratnam to break his own clichés
jeyan-biochem19 February 2013
Maniratnam movies always evoke a loud 'boo', from supposed mass-oriented audience, for the characters of his movies are usually upper middle class intelligentsia, who speak in measured tone and this pattern is fitted on to characters from other social classes as well.

This cliché is broken, for the dialogues are written by acclaimed writer Jeyamohan and the screenplay is jointly sketched by Maniratnam and Jeyamohan. They bring out the raw energy through usage of slang that is prevalent in Christian fisherman villages of South Tamilnadu.

The initial scenes in Seminary and the dialogues sets the landscape for the story of 'Kadal', which is essentially a clash of ideologies between God seeking Aravindswamy (Sam) and self proclaimed son of Satan,Arjun Sarja (Bergmans). The dialogue of Arjun, wherein he says,he came to Seminary just to escape poverty does make the intent of the antagonist much clearer and also reflects the realism. The first 15 minutes of the movie essentially portrays what to expect from from the whole movie itself. The love affair of Maniratnam with Raavanan is not yet over for, Arjun is portrayed as a well learned biblical scholar who engages in wishful sins.

The Hero of the movie, Gautham Karthik (Thomas) is introduced as a bastard son and the social interactions push him towards becoming Anti-social. The scenes in village transport you there as an observer and makes you realize the effort, the director has put in artist selection for supporting and background roles. One of the background roles which get etched in your mind is a fisher-woman who hawks in the market and picks up a duel with Aravindswamy.

Religion itself has to play a major role in the movie and the reality of how the religious functions are commoditized is brought out. The tape recorder which Aravindswamy uses to connect the people with God travels along with the movie till the very end. For the first time, Maniratnam completely deals with people who live in the fringes of society and morality.

The immersive experience that the movie offers can be attributed to the picturesque cinematography of Rajiv Menon who has unobtrusively sewed vast unending landscape of ocean and ocean associated land and the haunting background score of AR.Rahman. 'Magudi' song by Aaryan Dinesh Kanagaratnam, a Sinhalese Rapper sets the tone for the movie in either halves of the movie, by showing how the character of Gautham Karthik develops itself from child to brash teen and his experiences with Sins.

The milestone scenes includes the scene were the young Gautham breaks down before the tape recorder, the first experience of Ocean by Gautham, the scene were Aravindswamy is implicated in the sin of flesh, When Arjun proclaims himself as Satan before Aravindswamy, When Gautam experiences the first blood of birth on his hands, The mental torment of Gautam when he tries to explain about what is Sin to Thulasi , the climax in mid of rough seas and of course the rousing song near the end credits.

One cannot stop admiring the energy in débutant Gautham Karthik and the comeback performances of Aravindswamy and Arjun Sarja. Thulasi (Beatrice) fits the limited scope offered by the story and Ponvannan as usual brings out a standout performance.

The story can be pushed aside by many as a classic "Truth Alone Triumph" formulaic film, but what makes it stand out is the layered treatment which the makers have brought in to make it more realistic. Though a fairy tale ending, it brings out the grey nature of human, wherein do- gooder saintly Father Sam is pushed to kill Bergmans, Proclaimed Son of Satan Bergman's inability to kill his estranged daughter Beatrice and the sinner Thomas insistence in saving Bergmans. The movie ends with the supposed Angel, Beatrice spending her time in a rehabilitation institution.

Overall, a truly immersive visual, aural experience and watch it for the wonderful acting performances of lead and supporting artists.

And Yes, Kadal is not a Romantic movie.

And with respect to the ad films that were played before movie titles, the news ads for National Sample Survey Office (NSSO), shows the desperate need for creativity among government based public relation offices. The syntax and the template of the ads are so shamelessly the same that I can recall the mid 90's ads for oral contraceptives in Doordarshan, which once monopolized the broadcasting industry in India.

Mani Ratnam concept is still strong
stylegamer10 April 2013
So it's time we saw a Mani Ratnam film again. The director appears once every three years, with his insurmountable reputation and brings along a ton of critics Mani Ratnam tells a grand but simple tale this time, that of the Christian concept of god vs the devil. As usual mani;s conceptualisation skills is still untouched and gets better over the years His film metaphors the sea (Kadal in Tamil) to great effect.Watching a Mani Ratnam film, you inevitably compare 'Kadal,' with his earlier films. But the the canvas of Kadal is bigger than a mere coincidence of the scenes from some of Maniratnam's earlier movies with familiar childhood nayagan, visuals of kannathil muthamittal, emotions and ideology of Thalapathy and the familiar romance from Alaipayuthey. Again we cannot find any hint of the director rehashing his old work although segments of the movie have similar themes to his past work . Of course no ratnam movie is complete without his trademark "events should be imagined through words and dialogues rather than shown" scenes which u will find aplenty in this movie.

Kadal, is a story of good versus evil, of retribution and forgiveness told in the inimitable style of Mani Ratnam. Every single member of the cast and crew have acted very well in Kadal The impressive part of the movie is the attention to detail of the rural landscape attitudes, scenery and the mannerisms portrayed. Only Ratnam has an eye for little details, borrowed from life. The cinematography in kadal is the best Maniratnam has ever produced since his 1992 magnum opus movie Roja, thanks to the ever roving camera of Rajiv menon. You will feel that u are actually there as part of the story and the sea.

The débutante young lead stars are surprisingly excellent for first timers in their performance .The former heart rob of the 90s and a favourite cast of Maniratnam, Arvindswamy carries the movie with a coming of age bold and divine persona. The movie marks the comeback of the actor in a graceful way.

Its probably the first time Arjun has been put into a seemingly villain role and a first in a maniratnam movie and it was a pleasure to see him and his excellent mannerisms which are true to life on the big screen.

If u are the kind who prefer to walk in to the trashy mainstream masala cinema and happen to dislike the movie due to its unconventional story and theme, then mani has a way of enjoying the movie , that by giving u a movie of his which has the best cinematography, editing and acting scenes and an accurate portrayal of a Christian fishing village .Having said that, you have to actually sit through this film to experience the godsend combined effect of Rajiv Menon's stunning visuals and AR Rahman's soulful compositions. Overall well done flick but some may be too harsh to put the movie down afterall it does take intelligence and appreciation to watch a movie that borders thinly on commercial cinema and that of art-house variety which maniratnam does exceptionally well , more so than other other director in the Indian movie industry today.

We know his ability to churn out masterpieces which will never go wrong even if they are commercial flops and Kadal is the Maniratnam movie just like his past movies which lingers in your mind long after u leave the theatre

Don't have to think twice . Just watch it.

Kadal - A Typical Maniratnam Movie..!!
sajithhonline1 February 2013
First of all, if u can enjoy only some commercial masala movies, don't go for Kadal. But if u want to experience something different, don't miss this classic..

Maniratnam proves once again why he is considered as the best director in India. Kadal is 100% Maniratnam style but don't go to the theatre expecting a Roja or Alaipayuthe.

Pros

1) Rajiv Menon's Cinematography - Exceptional!!! he is the best!

2) Excellent Acting by Arjun and Arvind swamy. Gautham Karthik also did a great job.

3) AR Rahman's music and BGM. No words to describe that!

4) Good story with a good message.

5) Hero's childhood scenes - heart melting.

6) Realistic shots especially the climax fight scene.

Cons

1) Screenplay fails to keep you engaged.

2) Heroine - Acting is OK but doesn't suits the role.

3) Songs except adiye and Moongil thottam are not well picturised.

4) Climax doesn't have anything unexpected or unpredictable.

Overall, a must watch Maniratnam classic..

But as i told earlier, not everyone will like it..
