A little weird at first, but ultimately worth watching
williambendavis-933-21895826 February 2015
I think this show is pretty great. Yes the whole drool thing is really weird (let me fill you in if you don't know what I'm talking about. Basically, our main character, Tsubaki, decides to taste his classmate's (Urabe), drool after he sees it on her desk after school. He ends up becoming addicted to her drool and the two begin a relationship.) , but if you can get past that, you'll have a rather good show on your hands. It's nice to see something unique with a little originality. It isn't a very stereotypical and lazy romance anime. The whole drool aspect, as weird as it is, does bring something new to the table. That being said, there is one major issue with this show. Tsubaki's and Urabe's relationship moves very, very slow. Infuriatingly slow actually. So infuriating that at the end of the show you will most likely be screaming "THAT"S IT!?". I wish there would have been more episodes so we could have seen this relationship grow. I would have no problem with this relationship going as slow as it did, but with only 13 episodes, their relationship doesn't go that far at all. Besides that, I'd say this show is certainly worth watching. Just try to get past the drool thing and don't expect their relationship to move very quickly.

Kind of gross, but very funny and entertaining

Warning: Spoilers
It sounds like the name of some cheap sci-fi skin flick, but Mysterious Girlfriend X is actually a new anime based off a manga that came out in 2006 and is still in circulation. I've only seen three of the six episodes that have been listed on the Wikipedia page so I don't have much to review. Instead I'm just putting the name of the show out there because I think it is worth watching. The show is new and that means it is in Japanese (with English subtitles, of course) and only available online at certain sites. Crunchyroll, Hulu, and The Anime Network are three sites I know of where you can watch the show. I don't know when the American release date will be, but these things usually take a few years.

This show is about this boy named Tsubaki and this girl named Urabe and the relationship they form. Tsubaki is a schoolboy and when he sees the new student Urabe, he is enchanted by her. Urabe is a peculiar girl, though. Almost alien. Of course, Tsubaki doesn't realize this at first. One day when he wakes her up after school she stares him in the face and he realizes that he must have her. But what will he do? She walks out of the classroom and Tsubaki is left all alone with the drool that Urabe had left on her desk. What he does next is quite cringe-inducing and creepy, but kind of sweet, too. He takes his finger and swabs it in her drool. Yup, you read that right. Then he sticks his drool-covered finger in his mouth and sucks on it. You read that right, too.

Over the next few days he becomes ill. Very ill. Urabe visits him at home and tells him that she knows why he is sick. She says that it is because he had some of her drool. I wonder if Sherlock Holmes would have deduced that. From that point on Tsubaki must have some of her drool everyday or else he will go into severe withdrawal and become very sick. And not only that, but Urabe can communicate with him through her drool and send him messages in his dreams.

They become a couple, but Urabe is not like other girls and her idea of being in a couple is very peculiar. More than once Tsubaki finds himself overwhelmed and on the end of a sharp pair of pointy scissors that Urabe usually keeps hidden in her underwear.

Urabe believes they are destined to be together because she heard voice tell her that Tsubaki would be her first intimate sexual partner. But she doesn't want to advance into a such a relationship quickly and Tsubaki just has to be happy with sucking drool off her finger after school in the meantime.

Another thing I should mention is that not just anyone reacts to Urabe's drool in such a fashion. That means there truly is something special about Tsubaki's relationship with Urabe and the drool they share. The drool serves a purpose.

But if you find drool incredibly gross then this seriously is not for you because it is in every episode. The Japanese are a bit weird and this show takes some getting used to even if you don't throw up at the sight of drool, but I find Mysterious Girlfriend X to be funny as hell.

Sexy but at the same time Cute and Innocent and Full of Love
delightful-life23 November 2013
This is one of the top 10 animated series that I have every seen.

Hope you have read the official story line.

It might seem a bit gross - drool. The whole series is about drool, drool and drool. Yet, its never gross. Instead they make it so damn cute and adorable. Its amazing how they are able to pull this off. :-).......

And I think they were able to do it because this is one of the sweetest love stories that I have seen (more than Before Midnight)! And by sweet I don't mean clichéd, lovey dooey, etc. On the contrary its full of surprises!

This series is very short. Just 13 episodes. A total of 4 hrs 20 mins. I saw it in a single stretch and felt very disappointed when it got over. It was that quick.

Yes, definitely recommended.

Thank you for reading. Cheers. :-).

Best romance i've seen that took a very special place in my heart. I will never forget how awesome it was to watch this series and then after 3 years reading the manga.

VA for Urabe is absolutely fantastic, and it's a pity that she hasn't voiced any other anime.

Never seen such type of showing relationship and i really don't know why but the saliva thing was not gross or frustrating for me.

Again best romance.

This would be good if it wasn't so frustrating lol
sugarcane-1769121 November 2021
From the start it was weird, but a good weird, and you suspect the story and mystery unfolds as the episodes progress but you never get that satisfaction but the whole time you hope you would as it was so close to opening up, but doesn't, then it ends. Urabe must have some major traumatic issues as she won't let her boyfriend, whom she is basically obsessed with and loves with sooo much devotion, touch her even with a hug. There are certain points where they open up, have a break through in their relationship, and emotionally at it's climax it should flow the way Tsubaki naturally and instinctually wants to embrace Urabe and then it's ruined as she won't let him even get close and there is no resolution to this behavior and just becomes frustrating and annoying towards the last few episodes, with being only 13 episodes and all. I understand that initially the she should be closed off and what not, but they should have eventually had Urabe open up and let her guard down with Tsubaki, with her being so obsessed with him, but it doesn't happen and they just seem to be strangers that walk home and swap spit once a day, it's frustrating and weird that the writers decided to keep Tsubaki at arms length from Urabe and not elaborate on the many questions that revolve around Urabe when it could have been so much more emotional and captivating throughout the series. Huge miss.

This would have been easily rated higher if not for the weird tactile eccentricities of Urabe.

A must see Romantic Comedy......
Rohb14 August 2012
The series follows the relationship of Akira Tsubaki and Mikoto Urabe. Urabe is a transfer student who recently came to Tsubaki's school. The story starts from boy meets girls , how the relationship progress After a series of strange events, Tsubaki finds himself addicted to Urabe's drool. This series is very entertaining the characters are well played and very lovable. The story has many quirks like Urabe claims the addiction as love sickness, Panty scissors , strange dreams etc...as the relationship slowly progresses, focusing on the odd bond that comes out of the drool.A must see Romantic Comedy , you will laugh , get grossed out or maybe not but one thing for sure you will be entertained...

Weird, Sweet, Innocent and Sexy
bill_allison26 November 2022
This is a sweet love story. The weird part is it is based upon exchanging drool as a way to share emotions and physical sensations. This act only works between select individuals who have a mysterious bond. The girl, Mikoto Urabe, is very mysterious in every way. She hides her face behind long bangs. She might have suffered a childhood trauma - she does not like to be touched and carries scissors in her underwear for self defense. However, she does fall in love with Tsubaki and while the road is slow, someday they will be exceptionally close.

Genevieve Simmons smokey voicework as Urabe really adds a lot to the story. Josh Grelle is a solid countpoint as Tsubaki. The anime is done in an old fashioned 90's artistic style, but with the high quality of the best modern anime.

A strange yet sweet romance
Tweekums8 July 2012
Warning: Spoilers
When I first heard about this show I decided to see what it was like, more out of morbid curiosity than and expectation that it would actually be good! The premise is basic but strange; one day school boy Akira Tsubaki notices that classmate Mikoto Urabe left a small puddle of drool on her desk when she dozed off in class. Rather than be disgusted or just wipe it up he runs his finger through it and puts it in his mouth! Over the next few days he starts to get ill; one might have thought he has caught something off her but no; she knows what is wrong and goes round to tell him... he is going cold turkey because he has become addicted to her drool! Surprisingly she doesn't seem too bothered by what he did and each day after school she puts a finger in her mouth then puts it in his.

There is more to it than merely tasting her drool; when he does so he gets an insight into her emotional state and it turns out she can tell how he feels by tasting his saliva. Over the course of the series they grow closer and a relationship develops. Inevitably one or two obstacles arise but it is obvious that they belong to each other. The strength of the series is largely down to Urabe's character; as the title suggests there is something distinctly mysterious about her; it helps that Ayako Yoshitani did such a great job voicing her... at least her voice sounded great even if I had to rely on subtitles to understand what she was saying. While Tsubaki isn't quite such an interesting character he makes a good protagonist; besides he isn't meant to be the mysterious one; she is.

I was surprised just how much I enjoyed this series; it may not be full of action or hilarious moments but the characters are fun to watch. There is little in the way of fan service; at least in early episodes; there is a little bit of nudity involving Urabe and another girl later on but all front views are in shadow... at least on the version shown on Crunchyroll... it looked the sort of shadow that might disappear on any eventual DVD release! I'd certainly recommend this to anime fans looking for something rather different... just don't watch it while you are eating; one or two of the drool tasting scenes made me feel slightly nauseous; a first for an anime series!

Anime's Girl Character never you seen before
bagusjumpjet23 April 2015
Warning: Spoilers
Looks like everyone already explained from various side of this anime and all good review. But here I want to add my opinion that every romantic comedy anime that you have been watch, you must seen every type of girls (tsundere, kuudere, yandere). But this anime's heroine is unique one, not your typical everyday tsundere girl. Urabe is most sincere and genuine ever if you talking about her feeling to his boyfriend. If you break her heart in specific ways, she never complain but you can't guess her being okay while the reality its make her hurt. Maybe you think she's weak girl? You make a big mistake. If you make wrong moves, touch her or want to hugs her suddenly, her panty scissor will traumatized you. Martial arts + scissor = ??

Regards

Gross yet wholesome
desmedtroblesarthur17 July 2022
This anime is very unique. The drool bond that Urabe and Tsubaki have is pretty gross but if u look past that you'll have a wholesome time. This anime has done so many things right and it's sad we won't get a second season. I recommend this anime to everyone who loves the romance genre!

Underrated
hunterj-3917118 May 2023
This show is definitely not normal. But I would love to see the show continued, sadly the creator is not a very social person and does not have a work email or anything that I know about. I love how the creator used a mix of mystery and weirdness. I have watched the show 2 time before I believe I really understood what the message was. Side note I tried this with my girl and let's just say it is just the show thing lol (seriously don't try). One thing about the show that makes me mad is the ending! The ending had sooo much potential but they did not finish it... I'm sure the creator moved on but I would love for him to make more, I can't stress it enough how much I want more of it. It is funny I thought I was just some cringe thing on the first episode but the mysterious intent made me want to watch the next episode I think I deserves to be on Crunchyroll again! Make more if u see this creator!

Probably one of the best animes
chriswheat-1916924 August 2023
I was severally devastated in the final second of the anime and it made me sad to have to see this come to an end. I have watched many anime's in my life but this is the only one that has made me wright a description of it. My only wish is to see a second season but all of the good anime's unfortunately only have one amazing season. I'm fortunate some kid in my school forced me to watch this (even though I was going to anyway). All I need in life is cars, cameras, and anime specifically this one because it just brought me to much joy and every good emotion. I want to thank the creator of this anime and to consider making a season two.
