Sex & Nudity

  • Bare breasts can be briefly seen twice. In one, a woman is nursing her baby. This is not meant to be sexual in any way. In the other instance, a woman turns over in bed and her breast can be seen for a second.
  • There are several sex scenes in this movie, although it's not terribly explicit other than a male character thrusting against a female character. However, very little nudity is seen during these scenes, except for a brief glimpse of a bare breast.
  • In terms of sexual elements/themes, this film is adapted from the classic novel by French writer Gustave Flaubert, Madame Bovary, and set in 1800s France, revolving around Emma Bovary, a beautiful woman who has a highly romanticized view of the world and is dissatisfied with her marriage to a simple country doctor in a small town. She craves excitement, passion, status, love, and begins trysts with other men behind her husbands back.

Violence & Gore

  • During a hunt, a man wipes blood from his dagger onto a tree. Later, when a group returns from a hunt, the head and skin of an elk are seen being carried off. The elk's internal organs are seen poured onto the ground and dogs begin to eat them. One character is given a severed hoof of the elk.
  • There is a scene of surgery. While no blood is shown, a young man is in a great deal of pain and cries out several times.

Profanity

  • There is no profanity in this movie.

Alcohol, Drugs & Smoking

  • There are one or two scenes where a man briefly smokes a pipe. There is some brief drinking at a party and a toast to a couple. There is very, very little smoking or drinking.
