Sword art online for adults?
Spartan_1_1_74 January 2015
A more gory, brutal, adult themed Sword art online anime I would say.

The story is that a lot of people, including the protagonist, find themselves on a deserted island where they are forced to play an exact real life version of a popular online game. It was interesting enough to get me hooked and anticipated for every next episode.

The protagonist was good, in a way that they didn't made him too strong or something, but didn't made him a complete wimp too, kind of a balanced type which you normally don't get to see. But they just had to include an annoying girl with big boobs to add fan service and romance.

The action was decent, layered with gore and brutality.

The problem though is that firstly, the anime ended without any resolution or anything, it just ended in mid way. Secondly, even the 12 episodes felt cramped up. So many characters could have been fleshed out more.

Btooom!

When I watch an anime...I never compare them too other anime or related games..... I only judge on what i can see and my own feeling towards the series

Although the title seems a bit...childish....the poster seems interesting(most of the fan i know choose anime base on cool poster...lol)

a beautiful girl and a cool hero...

The character designer did a very good job.....the characters are beautiful and cool..

the director and writer also did a wonderful job in introducing the characters and gist of the game....the action sequence is exciting.....and in my opinion the development of the hero and heroin romantic relationship...is welll plan.... not too fast and not too slow....

I think that the production team were not given enough episode to fully tell their story... it is a pity that there are no 2nd season..... maybe if they were able to have a few more episode, the series would have made a better impression on the viewers.

I couldn't find any other anime that uses bomb as their fighting tools...so i consider this series is unique and original(if you can forget about the game).

I think that the series is worth watching and you will enjoy it very much however, the ending will be a bit disappointing as i feel that there are no closure.

There is depth hidden behind this video game anime.
dameon_green2 June 2020
A video game taking over the Neet's life isn't new, nor is the Neet being forced into a dangerous situation because of the video game, and "Btooom!" Death match isn't groundbreaking but the characters hardships and growth are surprisingly well done.

The male protagonists growth is measured and reasonable based on the situations he faced, however the real standout is the female protagonist. After facing hardships before being dropped on the island she's forced to relive the experience again, subjected to the humanities feral side. Although less than perfect I was impressed the anime addressed the issue of rape, the trauma survivors live with and the guilt survivors who escape suffer through.

Pros:
  • Depth, imperfect but it's there.
  • Good character growth and realistic responses.
  • Fairly consistent animation.
  • English Dubbing.

Cons:
  • Not a fan of the female protagonist's voice at times.
  • Predictable.
  • No second season.
  • Dialog seemed "stilted"' in early episodes.

Omg, a must watch
ojlfn200716 November 2012
I watch a lot of anime, when I mean a lot I can proudly say I have covered about 50 different series at the least. This one ranks up there, with the suspense, difficulty and tactical awareness of the game, and the whole bringing out the crazy in normal people plot. A must watch. I rate this on similar lines as death note, dead man wonderland, Mirai Nikki, high school of the dead just to name a few.

If you are into anime series that constantly keep you at the edge and do have a sense of realism and plausibility all through the story or 'world' that has been created, then this is for you. If in turn you like more fantasy heroic idol worshiping anime's as bleach and naruto or one piece, then you should look else where because this is some serious stuff.

I Begrudgingly Give This A 10
tesswysko23 January 2021
Warning: Spoilers
SPOILERS: I won't say much, because as an Anime and Gamer Girl, I hate when people ruin things for me too! However, I would very much want to be informed! I have to say this is one of my favorite Anime series I've seen thus far. It's about people from all walks of life who get dropped on an island with only a bag of bombs, to play a life or death version of the game Btooom! It's VERY well written and drawn, the voice actors are famous and do a stellar job, so I can't figure out why the series just ended at12 episodes, right in the middle of the story! It leaves you feeling completely abandoned and frustrated, because it's not like they planned to keep going, it was obvious that this was their planned end! So you can see why I begrudgingly gave it a ten. If I went on ending alone, I would have given it a 1. But the series was SO GOOD that I had to force myself to not binge watch it! So now you're informed, I hope you can enjoy it as much as I did, but won't be disappointed the way I was!

A genuinely exciting action anime
Tweekums28 December 2012
Warning: Spoilers
Ryota Sakamoto is one of the best players of the online game 'Btooom!' which involves players fighting with small bombs to achieve their objective. Then one day Ryota wakes to find himself on a remote Pacific island with a satchel containing eight of the bombs from the game... he is now playing for real! Over the course of the opening episodes he has to fight some other players and ends up teamed with Hamiko, a girl who unbeknownst to him had played the game alongside him on line and Kiyoshi Taira, an older man who also played the game. During this time we learn that there are a variety of different bomb types and players can only use other people's bombs if that person is dead, everybody also has a chip implanted in their left hand that works as a radar to spot other players and if a player collects eight such chips they will be taken off the island... which of course gives everybody a motive to kill and a reason not to trust anybody.

This may seem like just another fighting-anime but it is much more than that; there is a good amount of action and the tension is always high but this is more about how the characters behave and how the game makes trust difficult. Ryoka and Hamiko make good protagonists; they are obviously skilled at the game but they aren't that much better than other players so it frequently looks as if they could be hurt. The premise itself isn't that different to 'Battle Royale' but the execution is different and the fact that players need eight chips to get off the island rather than needing everybody else to die means it is more believable that they would form teams... even if those teams are fragile. The fact that they are fighting with a variety of bombs is original and when they detonate it is well animated. There is a small amount of fan-service but it isn't excessive enough to be off putting.

The series is only twelve episodes long but the final episode clearly leaves things open for a second season... and I'm sure most people who watched this will be hoping for more; I know I do.

These comments are based on watching the series in Japanese with English subtitles. At the time I write this the series can be watched legally on Crunchyroll.

The immature half brother of Death Note & Code Geass
vinhloc3079629 December 2018
Warning: Spoilers
This series walks through the growth journey of the protagonist from a gamer NEET to an action survival hero, all the while revealing a naive perspective of the author - either because he wholeheartedly has this perspective, or because he dumbs down the perspective for the audience.

The series' plot tries to be sophisticated but fails to do so: the mind games that play out between characters are predictable, and the end-result of all conflicts (ideologically or physically) barely touches the nuances raised by those conflicts. All characters are one-dimensional, and remains underdeveloped throughout the journey.

Nonetheless, the series brings another take on an interesting (if overused) Battle Royale premise, and in this way provides enough entertainment if one can suspend belief throughout the 6-hour run-time.

Very good phycological thriller
puneetsharma94 September 2018
When people trapped in island and only way to leave is get 6 gems or chips which only can extract when opponent is died in that event everyone of them crack with the dark side which they are tiring to resit but all can't.

When you see the dark side of them and also valance that is for the another level some people compare with the sward art online but here it different you can feel the pain as person are really there. It not a virtual place.

First I think bomb only but there are different type of explosion some are timer some are cracker some filled with gas and so on. I mean there are too much related to it. So fight seen are very interesting.

Loved It! Looking for Season 2!!
mercfma27 May 2014
Warning: Spoilers
If your into kill or be killed, bloody, immoral, psychological & violent anime then this should be pretty high on your must watch list! I will say the story is fairly predictable but done really well enough that its still very interesting. This show is about killing 7 other people and taking there chips to be able to get off of this island they've all been stranded on with nothing but an assortment of bombs. I will say the weapons they get are pretty unique and make for a good story, the characters are pretty good, the main male character reminds me of Light Yagami from Death Note similar looks and thought process. I'm kind of sad that theirs not more episodes or a season two for it yet, i know the reason though two years ago when this anime was made they used every chapter from the manga(about 40-50) to make 12 episodes and since its a monthly chapter manga theirs only about enough content for another 6 episodes currently.

Overall: 4/5. Why not 5/5? Well the overall outcome of everything is pretty predictable(so far that is, i haven't read the manga) but what can you expect for the story line there's not much more i could ask for(don't get me wrong though its end outcome is predictable yes but it doesn't fail to keep you watching and wanting more with every episode), my only other reasoning is that there's not a season 2 yet. This show came very highly recommend to me and everyone who's watched it liked it a lot or loved it, so i think they should write chapters a bit quicker.

On a irrelevant note, because this anime is still ongoing and there isn't a season two yet and i enjoyed it so much i'm going to buy all the current mangas(about 50$ total) to help support its continuation hopefully it helps it on its way for a second season since it really isn't that old yet i'd say theirs a 75% chance for a second season especially with the ending of season one, its wide open with several big question marks!

Another poorly written anime
AndroideParanoide20 May 2019
Warning: Spoilers
We know this is a copy of battle royale but it presented some elements that could make the serie insteresting, but from episode 1 it shows terrible writing and nonsense all over the plot.

The general idea wasn't, it's the way it's executed that makes this seem aimed at little kids.

Somehow in episode 1 the countdown sound of the bomb dissapears in order to provide plot armor for the main character, among other stupid facts.

Episode 2 somehow a group of 3 men decides to name a girl they just met as they leader and her their bombs... i mean, i cannot even understand how writters dare to write whatever they want and their zombie fans still like that.

There is no respect for the viewers at any point in this senseless show.

A good adaptation of the manga.
namiirei10 May 2021
The animation was quite good, and the anime mostly followed the original manga story, sadly only for the middle of the 1st arc, which is the best of the story for me.

The only minus point would be the censorship of some of the original scenes, and the fact that the anime end early, so if you want to see what happen after, you need to read the manga.

Ihmo, it's a nice anime/manga for the survival fans, even if others like Darwin games are even better.

Need continuity
martin_merelesc23 February 2022
Btooom! Is a series that is so good to the point that we need another season. While certainly, the romantic ending is quite a fine piece to be experienced. It is just far from enough, as it leaves too many questions that have been left unanswered. But it is still a good series that takes pride in its good writing. In a sense, you have to see for yourself just how good this series appears to be.

A very brilliant dark realistic type of anime
Irishchatter13 June 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Basically, I heard many reports that this anime wasn't really well favourited so I wanted to see it for myself. Man, it was such a rollercoaster, a pretty brutal one I gotta say. It goes to show how man is dangerous in lots of various ways to one another. This involves extremely serious stuff such as rape, revenge killing, child abuse, social exclusion, betrayal, you name it. Its all in the mix of what some of us human beings do!

This anime will give you chills as having your fingers & toes crossed the whole time hoping that Ryoka and Hamiko do not die on the Island. It was a good ending that they both ended up being together cause they are such a cute couple! I'm sure there's more to it than that in the manga as well as its ending.

If you like dark anime, this one is for you lads!

Waste of Time
mayank0987624 August 2016
What a disaster, the anime bored me to hell. The only decent stuff about it is the animation, rest all is terrible. The plot of survival in a deserted island is an old one, so no originality. I did like the concept of using bombs as weapons but with no explanation on the bombs & little use of strategy or fights the concept is defeated. The anime is without a background story of why this is happening and frankly doesn't have an idea of where it wants to go. Normally in a survival anime we are supposed to root for a character but in this anime it's not possible as everyone got a negative vibe about them. The main protagonist is a NEET who hits his step dad and throws things on his mother during flashbacks and now when he is in the island he is supposed to be a nice guy!!! Most of the characterization is super weak and boring. This was suppose to be a thriller anime with tons of action but is sadly missing both. Also the anime was dropped midway without conclusion so its total waste of time.

Episode one isn't good.
invisibleunicornninja18 September 2018
So I watched episode one, and decided not to watch any more. Here are my thoughts.

Well first of all, the theme song is unbearable. In my experience, when anime has a creative op with great music, it ends up being a great anime. When the theme song is crappy, the show is crappy. Every anime I've seen is perfectly reflected by the theme song. This show has a op with bad singing, and boring visuals. From what I watched, that perfectly reflects the show.

The tone of this show is kinda annoying. It takes itself waaay too seriously. Its trying to appeal to all the 10-year-old edgelord gamers who they know are watching.

The protagonist, who is like the only character in episode one with any development, is extremely unlikable and stupid. I would not want to follow him for any more episodes.

The animation and art is alright, though a bit generic.

The voice acting and background music/sounds is ok. Nothing too noteworthy.

Episode one is mainly filler and does nothing that makes me want to keep watching. There's a lot of bits where the protagonist talks about stuff he already knows to himself, because the writers couldn't figure out a way to convey the information to the audience.

Overall, I wouldn't recommend this show. Maybe it is brilliant by episode 2, but I doubt that.
