Last year, Toho released a new Godzilla film, titled Godzilla Minus One (read our review Here), in Japan on November 3rd, which happens to be Godzilla Day, the anniversary of the 1954 release of the original Godzilla movie. That was the 69th anniversary – and since this year marks the 70th anniversary of the original film, Godzilla Minus One is returning to theatres this weekend, with screenings starting on November 1st. There’s also a black & white version of Godzilla Minus One that’s called Godzilla Minus One/Minus Color, and that version of the film is also returning to theatres for this celebration. To see if Godzilla Minus One and/or Godzilla Minus One/Minus Color will be showing near you this weekend, check out the Tickets.Godzilla website.
Written and directed by Takashi Yamazaki, Godzilla Minus One sees an already devastated postwar Japan facing a new threat in the form of Godzilla.

The 37th Tokyo International Film Festival began its 10-day run on October 28 with a colorful Red Carpet event featuring Japanese and international cinema luminaries, ahead of the TIFF Opening Ceremony.
The Red Carpet festivities got underway with brief stage appearances by over 200 filmmakers, actors and luminaries from across sections of the festival, as well as the TIFF juries. They then moved along the 162-meter serpentine walk, stopping for multiple autographs and selfies with fans from far and wide before arriving at the elegant staircase leading into the Tokyo Takarazuka Theater. The theater was built in the style of yesteryear’s grand movie houses, providing the perfect backdrop for TIFF’s Opening Ceremony.
Among the international luminaries making the stroll were Chinese actor Zhao Liying and director Midi Z (at TIFF with the film The Unseen Sister); Hong Kong actor Michael Hui (The Last Dance); Taiwanese director Huang Xi and Hong...

Black and white re-release of one of the fire-breathing lizard’s best outings looks terrific and has an intriguingly ambiguous human lead actor
It’s 70 years since Godzilla first stomped into cinemas, and the big lad has barely aged a day. He’s the Cher of movie monsters: constant reinvention, permanent icon status (even in his ropier moments), while never being afraid to play the hits and give the people what they want. Which in Godzilla’s case is a big fire-breathing lizard smooshing skyscrapers to rubble while the people below flee like ants. That’s exactly what you got a satisfying amount of in Godzilla Minus One – and now it’s re-released in monochrome as, wait for it, Godzilla Minus One/Minus Color. Do you see what they did there?
The film, if you recall, opened by introducing its human protagonist Kōichi Shikishima (Ryunosuke Kamiki) in the dog days of the second world war,...

"There's no way to stop it." The big radioactive lizard is back! Again! Japan's Toho is planning another 2024 re-release of this beloved, Oscar-winning, monster movie mega-hit Godzilla: Minus One. The re-release is part of the 70th Anniversary of Godzilla celebrations (more info here), because the original Gojira movie opened in Japan on November 1st way back in 1954. So this is also re-releasing on November 1st in the US as well - after a successful run last winter. Prolific Japanese filmmaker Takashi Yamazaki directed this epic action sci-fi - starring Ryunosuke Kamiki, Minami Hamabe, Yuki Yamada, Munetaka Aoki, Hidetaka Yoshioka, Sakura Ando, Kuranosuke Sasaki. Post-war Japan is at its lowest point when a new crisis emerges in the form of a giant monster, baptized in the horrific power of the atomic bomb. The movie originally opened in Japan last November and in the US in December, becoming a hit worldwide before...

The 37th Tokyo International Film Festival got off to a memorably splashy start Monday night with the world premiere of filmmaker Shiraishi Kazuya’s frenetic and wildly bloody samurai action flick 11 Rebels.
In recent years, Japan’s preeminent cinema event has been attempting to revitalize and rebrand itself as a not-to-be-missed cultural occasion in the Asia-Pacific region. After years of organizational drift, the festival, under the leadership of current chairman Hiroyasu Ando, is on a mission to boost its reach and reputation into something more commensurate with the country’s powerful cinematic past and the ever-growing appeal of Japanese culture around the globe.
In that sense, 11 Rebels was perhaps the perfect pick for this year’s opening gala screening. A throw-back samurai slasher, the film is based on a decades-old screenplay by the late, great scriptwriter Kasahara Kazuo, best known for his cult classic yakuza film Battles Without Honor and Humanity...

The 37th Tokyo International Film Festival (TIFF) is doubling down on global networking and gender equality initiatives, according to festival chair Ando Hiroyasu.
“During the Covid-19 pandemic, various restrictions made this difficult, but we are finally able to engage in genuine networking,” Ando told Variety. The festival has relocated its TIFF Lounge, a hub for international exchange, to the more centrally located Lexus Meets venue to facilitate better interaction between Japanese and international filmmakers.
Among this year’s notable additions is a new Women’s Empowerment section. The initiative follows TIFF becoming the first Asian film festival to sign the Collectif 50/50 charter in 2021. Collectif 50/50 is an international organization promoting gender equality in the film industry. “Through this new section, showcasing films that focus on women’s achievements and holding a symposium, we hope to listen to wider range of voices, encouraging discussions and initiatives that promote and reflect on women’s empowerment,...

Barbenheimer was an unprecedented cultural event. Born from two vastly different movies marketed at different audiences, with zero things in common other than a release date and the fact that they had big budgets, "Barbie" and "Oppenheimer" somehow inspired a totally organic, fan-driven "crossover." Granted, it was never really a proper crossover, and neither film's marketing campaigns acknowledged the other's, but fans didn't care. As much as the cultural conversation was aware, Barbenheimer was real, and it made both "Barbie" and "Oppenheimer" hugely successful at the box office.
Indeed, the fan-made double feature caught on, and soon enough thousands of people were planning to watch both halves of Barbenheimer back-to-back on release day, embracing each film as part of a whole rather than play into box office competition. But years before people coined the term Barbenheimer, and even years before another brilliant piece of counter programming made both "The Dark Knight...

Last year's "Godzilla Minus One" was a great many things. Primarily, it was a pleasant surprise that came out of nowhere to become one of the greatest entries in the history of the long-running "Godzilla" franchise. That's a credit to writer/director Takashi Yamazaki, who delivered the goods with this one. He even served up a somewhat divisive ending, which reveals that Noriko (Minami Hamabe) actually lived through Godzilla's devastating attack. It's a happy ending, for better or worse. But it wasn't always going to be that way.
Yamazaki recently appeared at New York Comic Con to take part in a panel celebrating the 70th anniversary of the original 1954 classic "Godzilla" later this month. During the panel, the filmmaker addressed Noriko's fate and explained (via Kaiju United) that the original draft of the script killed her off. Realizing that...

You have to hand it to Godzilla – he doesn’t look 70. The greatest movie monster of all time continues to age oh-so-gracefully. And given the Oscar success of the astonishing Godzilla Minus One, and the gleefully colourful carnage of Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire, you could even say the radioactive lizard is at the peak of his powers right now. Since the original Godzilla was released back in 1954, it’s now officially been seven decades since he first stomped his way to big-screen glory – and to celebrate, Japanese studio Toho has released an epic tribute montage to the big guy, spanning several decades and eras of kaiju storytelling. Give it a watch here:
This is heaven for Godzilla fans – spanning from the early black-and-white entries, through the colourful and crazy Showa era, into the more effects-heavy Millennium era, and through into the present day Reiwa era. That means you...

Fans often have a lot to complain about when it comes to their favorite actors. Whether it is their favorites not winning an award or being grilled by the media, much more ends up being a huge point of contention. And as far as Pedro Pascal is concerned, recently his fans have been alarmed at the ‘short’ screen time he has in the upcoming film, Gladiator 2.

While it might seem short to some, the whole drama has been blown out of proportion, if we compare his screen time with some other movies. As fans complain, they fail to realize that even the great Robert Downey Jr. had less screen time in the blockbuster Avengers: Infinity War.

The last five years have been transformative for cinema, between the impact of Covid, the streaming revolution, and the rise of AI technology. Which is exactly why Empire decided to poll an array of top filmmakers in Hollywood – and beyond – on what exactly is going on in the industry, and what it all means for the movies. The result is a major new article – available to read in full in our Mickey 17 issue (order here).
One of the hottest topics is the encroachment of AI, with the industry still figuring out how it could, should – or should not – be used in moviemaking. “It is not creative,” says Gina Prince-Bythewood, director of The Woman King. “It just takes from others’ creativity.” Sofia Coppola – director of Priscilla and Lost In Translation – questions its capabilities beyond creating mere imagery: “It can be helpful, but I think you need a heart and soul to make art.

Since the success of “Demon Slayer: Mugen Train,” which grossed nearly $50 million domestically in 2021, it’s been clear that anime will continue to be a major player at the specialty box office for years to come. Now, with Toho International’s acquisition of one of the medium’s top American distributors, Gkids, competition for the eyes and dollars of anime fans is about to step up.
It’s a natural fit for the two companies to be joining forces. Last December, Toho and GKids made box office history by pushing two Japanese-produced films into the top 3 at the U.S. box office on the same weekend. The Oscar for Best Visual Effects is particularly tough to predict because of the complicated system by which the nominees are determined in three stages. The members of the executive committee of the branch cast preferential ballots to determine 20 films for further consideration. These are then winnowed down to 10 semi-finalists, which will be announced on December 17, 2024. (Scroll down for the most up-to-date 2025 Oscar predictions for Best Visual Effects.)
All members of the branch are invited to a virtual screening of excerpts from these 10 films in January at which potential nominees may discuss their work. Ballots are counted using a system of re-weighted range voting to determine the five nominees, which will be revealed on January 17. The entire voting membership of the academy will then vote for the winners, which will be revealed during the 97th Academy Awards ceremony on March 2.

Japanese media giant Toho is acquiring Gkids, the North American distributor of prestige animated films like the Oscar-winning The Boy and the Heron.
Gkids will continue to operate as a wholly owned subsidiary of the Los Angeles-based Toho International. Gkids Founder Eric Beckman will remain as CEO, and Dave Jesteadt will remain as President.
The two execs have run Gkids together since the company first released the Academy Award-nominated film The Secret of Kells as a two-person outfit in 2009. The company has gone on to rack up 13 Best Animated Feature nominations at the Academy Awards, winning the trophy last year for Hayao Miyazaki’s The Boy and the Heron.
The deal advances Toho’s goal to grow outside of Japan, and aims to connect its Japanese and international productions, creators, and studios more directly and widely with creators and fans overseas. Toho acquired Japanese animation studio Science Saru and also...

Gkids, the indie distributor notable for its animated film releases and many Studio Ghibli titles in North America, has been acquired by the iconic Japanese studio Toho.
The move gives Toho, which has released everything from Godzilla films to anime classics like “My Hero Academia,” a major expansion in North America and a distribution arm to extend their reach further.
Toho is picking up a 100 percent equity share in the company led by founder and CEO Eric Beckman and President Dave Jesteadt. They’ll keep those jobs. Gkids will be a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Los Angeles-based Toho International.
Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Gkids was founded in 2009 with the release of the Oscar-nominated “The Secret of Kells.” It was just a two-person company at the time. Since then, 13 different films Gkids released in North America have been nominated for Best Animated Feature, including last year’s...

Japanese media giant Toho Co. — the studio behind that country’s famous Godzilla movie monster — has unveiled a deal to acquire Gkids, the North American indie producer and distributor.
Financial terms of the agreement were not disclosed, but Gkids, launched in 2008 with a focus on animated movies, is set to operate as a subsidiary of Toho under company founder/CEO Eric Beckman and president Dave Jesteadt.

Sunday Am Final: In one of the year’s second-best triumphs for indie genre cinema after Neon’s Longlegs, Cineverse’s under $5M investment, Terrifier 3, is screaming to an estimated $18.3M+ 3-day after an $8.2M Friday, $5.9M Saturday and $4.2M Sunday. That Sunday hold -30% is on account of the Indigenous Peoples holiday. The threequel received a B CinemaScore, which is high praise from the moviegoer pollster as it doesn’t hand out a lot of As to horror titles.
The jaw dropping awe is how this movie, which was largely marketed to Cineverse’s sole Bloody Disgusting fanbase and 80M streaming subscribers across 30 channels for under $1M, broke out to bigger numbers. Unlike some of the other wide entries this weekend, iSpot doesn’t show any national spots for Terrifier 3.

Another year, another money-making Marvel movie in the running to receive an Oscar nomination for Best Visual Effects. This time around it’s “Deadpool and Wolverine,” the third film in Ryan Reynolds‘ R-rated series and the first featuring Hugh Jackman‘s popular “X-Men” character. If “Deadpool and Wolverine” goes on to reap a visual effects bid, it would be the 18th Marvel entry overall to do so, when including those that contended before the Marvel Cinematic Universe officially kicked off in 2008. See them all below.
The most recent addition to the list was “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” (2023), with its tech whizzes losing to the “Godzilla Minus One” team at last year’s Academy Awards. That was actually the third “Guardians” film to earn a Best Visual Effects nom after “Vol. 2” (it lost to “Blade Runner 2049” in 2017) and “Vol. 1” (it lost to “Interstellar” in 2014).

Whether it be Robert Rodriguez making El Mariachi for just $7,000 or Godzilla Minus One looking like a big Hollywood epic with only a $15 million budget, it’s quite the feat when filmmakers are able to stretch a dollar. This year’s Venice Film Festival darling, A24’s The Brutalist, is a 3-and-a-half-hour drama shot on 70mm and it was made for under $10 million. The Brutalist was a sensation at this year’s Venice Film Festival, garnering a 12-minute standing ovation and winning the Silver Lion, which goes to the film’s director, in this case Brady Corbet. Although originally known as an actor (notably giving a terrific performance in Michael Haneke’s Funny Games remake), Corbet has been making his mark behind the camera. He co-wrote The Brutalist with longtime partner Mona Fastvold.
According to Deadline, Corbet would explain how he made this film with such a budget at a CAA screening.

Even in this age of volume stages and limitless digital tools, there are some things that simply cannot be filmed. Or at least, film can’t capture the totality of them. The atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki have to be high on that list, though atomic imagery has informed everything from “Nausicäa of the Valley of the Wind” to “Godzilla Minus One.” To tell even a part of the story of either bombing is an extreme challenge. Yet that is exactly what Episode 5 of “Pachinko” Season 2 does with the opening of “Chapter 13.”
The Apple TV+ series threads a very fine needle, making some stylistic choices and setting some rules for itself in order to have its depiction of Nagasaki stand apart from the rest of the series and yet not feel like some foggy, moralizing history lesson. The most obvious choice is that the 13-minute sequence unfolds in black and white,...

Takashi Yamazaki, the director of the 2023 film Godzilla Minus One, was also the director of the live-action adaptation of Parasyte. He had created both Parasyte: Part 1 and Parasyte: Part 2. It’s safe to say the director is a connoisseur of Hitoshi Iwaaki’s manga and on top of that, he is a wizard of visual effects in the industry. There’s no one better than him in the game.
Initially, rights to the film adaptation of Parasyte belonged to an American studio but as we can see, it never came to exist in Hollywood. It got handed to Yamazaki and eventually became a two-part film series. The director has discussed why the movie works within the Japanese context and not American.

Godzilla Minus One was the proud winner of the Best Visual Effects award at this year’s Academy Awards. The win was a fitting tribute to a franchise that has lasted over 70 years in cinema. Takashi Yamazaki, the film’s director, also served as the VFX supervisor and led the team at his VFX company Shirogumi to this historical win.

In an era where the use of CGI is being widely hated, Yamazaki’s attitude towards the visual effects was one factor that stood out for the film. Marvel and other CGI-dependent franchises should take notes on how Yamazaki and his team achieved 610 shots with a 35-member team and a frugal $15 million budget.

Godzilla Minus One created history when it became the first non-English language film to win the Academy Award for Best Visual Effects. Despite its small budget, the film presented an epic story featuring the titular kaiju on a grand scale, with visual and sound effects to match them. As a result, the film is a glowing example for all filmmakers because of its inventive techniques.

Film director cum screenwriter Leslye Headland tried really hard to bring something new to the Star Wars table with The Acolyte, even if it cost Lucasfilm and Disney a whopping budget of millions. However, the magic doesn’t seem to have worked its charm considering how the series will reportedly not be getting revived for a second season.
