Why did I waste my time?
emma_malakian29 December 2016
I've given it 2 out of 10, even then I feel I'm being generous.

This movie was on sky store and I didn't feel up for reading reviews so purchased it (unfortunately with the DVD too as it was the only option) both myself and my husband are big horror fans and we do enjoy thrillers too so it doesn't have to be very scary to win us over.

However this movie failed on just about every expectation we had. 1. the movie is all over the place and is very hard to follow. This makes it hard to care about the characters. 2. the acting is really bad, especially by the step dad and mother. 3. the whole film feels forced and unnatural.

The only up sides are that it had a plot twist (which is always a nice surprise) and the sets were well made.

I would strongly suggest spend your time and money on some other better movie as this one was just awful.

Warning: Spoilers
"The Haunting of Emily" (2016) and "Delirium" (2012) are the same film. After being missing for a whole year, Emily (Taylor Pigeon) magically appears. She does not speak. She lives primarily with her mom Rachel (Jolene Kay) and step father Tim (Nathan Polzin). Barry (Chris Gann) has visitation rights two days a week for 4 hours each. Tim suffers from demonic hallucinations. Rachel hears scratches and Barry comes across as not a nice guy. While trying to figure out what is happening...

Much of the film is about Tim and his alternate reality, sometimes in black and white, sometimes with a red filter, and sometimes looking like reality. I am sure there is some meaning there I missed. I thought the female characters looked too much alike. Then there was the opening scene which was a big WTF which they tie into the ending. Acting was fair.

Guide: F-word. Sex. No nudity.

Could've been clever but ended up clumsy and confusing
alarakalama29 September 2016
Warning: Spoilers
***SPOILERS*** This movie has three parts.

In the first, you are introduced to a couple, Tim and Rachael, who are just getting their daughter, Emily, back after she's been missing for the last year. There's no indication she's been harmed, and she seems to have no memory of the time. She goes home, but has regular visits by a woman from social services who seems to have no idea how to interact with a child. The situation is made more difficult when her biological father, Barry, tries to gain custody of her. It seems fairly normal, more like a Lifetime movie than anything I'd call horror, until there's an odd sex scene (PG-13 rated at most) in which the wife yells at her husband not to touch her and runs out of bed.

That's when things switch to the second part, where you find out that most- if not all- of the first part was a fantasy, a story being told by Tim- who is not Rachael's husband- a suspect in the disappearance of Emily- who hasn't been missing too long. Tim, it seems, has a condition that leads him to believe that whatever story he tells is what he is currently living. There's a lot of heated questioning, a bit of confusion as others, primarily Rachael, must respond to Tim's stories, putting themselves into it, a la role-playing.

After heated interrogation/role-play, Tim seems to be possessed, and asks who will take her place- Tim's sister (?) volunteers, Tim and her both have seizures (?), and what seems to be a demon takes over the sister, who then goes on a murder spree, killing guards and cops, and Barry (?).

In the end, one of cop's daughter's leaves a message on his phone that she found Tim's hiding place, and that he's crazy (although I think they figured that out some time ago). The police and SWAT- like agents go to storm the place, bringing Rachael along for some reason.

All in all, the story line was pretty clever, but it feels like the creators lost control of it, and it just flounders about. The script was average to confusing, the acting average to trite, and the filming was, also, average.

In total, I'm giving it 3/10 as I've seen worse. Watch something else if you have the choice.

wtf?!
lauralmhs20 November 2015
Well, looks like I have the ignominious and unfortunate distinction of being the first victim to review this one.

Second worst movie I have EVER seen. A hot, stinking, holy mess.

Atrocious acting and a thoroughly incomprehensible "plot."

Just wasted $4.99 watching this on On Demand. Wish I could get my money back from my cable company.

So bad, it's got to be seen to be believed. But then you'd waste good money like I just did.

I give this a negative number of stars; yes, it was really that bad.

Avoid at all costs.

Confusing Pile Of Rubbish
barry-steers19 July 2016
Warning: Spoilers
When I first watched this movie I actually thought someone had jumbled all the chapters up and I was watching this out of sequence. Talk about confusing and losing the whole narrative of the film. It was in the present then it jumped to what you thought was the past but was the future, present, past (future, possibly past or not)then present then dwelled on the past which you then guessed was the future but was now the present by now. I just kept thinking this would all make sense and there would be some grand reveal but alas it was a real let down. I pretty much guessed very early on that the main protagonist was some sort of conduit for the supernatural. It was telegraphed clearly so the rest of the movie's hinge on this fell very flat as you knew the plot already. Acting was so-so to adequate but the awful direction and editing just made an average flick into quite a dire affair. Pretty much a waste of 1hr 21mins. This could have been a lot more atmospheric and tense but was just a shambles of poor direction and editing.

I have to agree with user lauralmhs and wish I'd read their review

Yep, I have to agree with user lauralmhs and wish I'd read their review first before watching this complete dross. . So confusing and I honestly didn't know WTF happened. . It was like bits of films taken from different films and mixed together to get the audience to try and work out WTF was happening. . I don't know what the timeline was and how it was intended to make sense and whether a year had gone by or what and also, who died and how or why - maybe it's just me but at the end of the film I was thinking "What the hell did I just watch? Is this film going to be some sort of cult film or is it going to set the standards of the worst and cr*p*iest (horror???) film ever?" Well, I think the latter (and I'm not trying to be funny) and it actually excelled in that regard. . If this review helps in some way to save just one potential viewer from watching this film, then I am happy!

my first "review" here ...
nybackgammon-117 June 2017
Sorry, this isn't actually a review of the movie, but I do agree with most of the other reviewers. This movie is UNBELIEVABLY bad. Whoever was in charge of editing and continuity must have been sleepwalking or something. VERY confusing, at one point the lady who came to interview Emily her eyebrows and lipstick color seemed to change between angles. Not to mention the MOST glaring mistake, at one point she is apparently wearing a very low cut dress because you can see her bare shoulder and it's a solid blue background behind her, but in the very next shot she's wearing a business suit and there are blinds behind her. I haven't even watched 45 minutes and I'm TOTALLY lost. It's like they took bits & pieces off of the cutting room floor and spliced them together. Either that or this was someone's high school project, I'm not 100% sure. I am going to watch the rest and see if anything falls into place, but after reading the other reviews, that seems HIGHLY unlikely. Certainly among the 10 WORST movies I've ever seen, and I've seen a LOT!

Warning: Spoilers
*****POSSIBLE SPOILERS**** I don't know how I feel about this movie at the moment. It isn't your typical horror movie. There really aren't any jump scares. The horror is actually how deep you have to go into a crazy person's mind to get your answers. I for one think that psychological thrillers are better than regular blood and guts. They make you think. I gave this movie 5☆s because of the fact that it isn't your typical horror flick. Also,I kind of enjoyed the story line and I felt that the actor playing the lead did a really good job. Sure, the other actors could've stepped it up a little. All in all, I would definitely watch it again. Like when nothing else is on, or I am in the mood for this type of movie. Good Job!

Time waster
waqok21 October 2017
Like others, I should have come here first. I got about 80% of the way through it and then came here to try to figure out why it made so little sense. Now I know...there was little sense. At last it was free on Amazon Prime...but not worth it as it cost me time. And to make matters even worse, adding insult to injury, IMDb is forcing me to add more lines as they said it wasn't a long enough review!

Ummm...What?
peacemeatlast3 January 2023
I restarted this 3 times thinking I must have missed something important, apparently I'm just a masochist. I really have no idea about the movie, but I do appreciate this support group assuring me I am not crazy or stupid for having no idea WTF I just watched.

Off to watch something....anything else. There is another movie with the same name about a haunted house, but it had some poor reviews too. Possibly cursed name? There, that was a better idea than what I just restarted 3 times...

Prozac and popcorn it is I guess. Hmmm 68 more required characters...I guess if you want to feel like you are TOO high and not break your sobriety, this is the movie for you.

Certainly flawed, but interesting and enjoyable
opiaterein1 December 2016
As other reviewers have indicated this is quite a confusing film. I went into it with the main twist spoiled, so I can see how it would frustrate the average viewer, making them feel betrayed by the first third of the film. But if you can look past that, it's actually not hard to appreciate the uniqueness of the overall premise and the bold attempt by young director.

One of the most unfortunate things about the execution of this film is that the flaws are as deep as the strength of the premise. That is to say, in the hands of a more seasoned and careful writer/director and a more balanced cast, the premise could have been made into an epic drama. Sadly there isn't enough foreshadowing of the twist (pay close attention to Tim's first conversation with the social worker), the script has some glaring weaknesses, the climax is thoroughly incomprehensible... et cetera.

Some viewers will have no qualms with the confusing nature of the film. It may possibly appeal to fans of David Lynch and similarish weirdo-directors. Certainly worth the time of someone who enjoys film for film, and psychological thrillers. Don't expect a masterpiece, but give it a chance.

Interesting but largely incomprehensible.
parry_na24 June 2020
Originally released as 'Delirium', this was retitled 'The Haunting of Emily', presumably to kindle the interest of those who enjoy the current steady spew of films featuring the demonic taunting of young girls.

The actually haunting of Emily (Taylor Pigeon) is pretty peripheral to the story here. The girl goes missing, and when she returns, cannot speak, and has clearly brought 'something' back with her. Perhaps the word 'clearly' is ill-advised, because little about this story is clear.

I like films, especially horror films, which leave certain events unexplained. It makes me think the people making the film are keeping some secrets to themselves and I can only guess what those secrets are.

But this is largely incomprehensible. Lots of intense acting, screams and flashbacks, and then it ends. It's nicely shot, features some moody lighting and music, but the plot is too muggy for me.

Having said that, I'll be watching this again to see if I can make sense of it. There's a chance it will all be clearer the second time around and make sense, in which case I'll be editing this review. But I'm not putting money on it! Interesting. My score is 6 out of 10.
