When the Baxter family—dad Curtis (Doug Murray), mom Catherine (Ellie Harvie), teen-aged Alexis (Jodelle Ferland), and 10-year-old Finn (Christian Martyn)—move from California to a big old house in Maine, Finn learns from the next door neighbor boy Mason (Peter DaCunha) that his house has a history...it is haunted by notorious bootlegger Jimmy "Dead Leg" Gravano, who was murdered in his sleep and now shuffles around trying to kill anyone asleep. Scared of ghosts, Finn thinks every odd sound is a result of the ghost, until he learns that his house is actually being targeted by three art thieves—Sinclair (Malcolm McDowell), Jessica (Debi Mazar), and Hughes (Eddie Steeples)—who are looking to heist an original Edvard Munch painting, "The Widow", hidden in the basement. While his parents are away attending a Christmas party thrown by his mother's new boss (Edward Asner), Finn is the only one left at home to protect the house.
Home Alone: The Holiday Heist (aka Home Alone 5) is the fifth movie in the loosely connected Home Alone series, preceded by Mamma, ho perso l'aereo (1990) (1990), Mamma, ho riperso l'aereo: Mi sono smarrito a New York (1992) (1992), Mamma, ho preso il morbillo (1997) (1997), and Home Alone 4: Taking Back the House (2002) (2002). The screenplay was written by Aaron Ginsburg and Wade McIntye. John Hughes, the screenwriter from the first three Home Alone movies was not involved in writing for this movie nor are the characters he created (i.e., the McAllisters) in it.
A bootlegger is someone who makes, sells or transports alcohol illegally, mainly the latter. Smuggling such contraband may be involved in his/her work. The term often refers to those who operated during the period of Prohibition [1920-1933] in the United States.
Edvard Munch [1863-1944] was a Norwegian Expressionist artist, renown for his paintings of The Scream.
Outside of the fact that it's worth $85 million, the widow pictured in the painting was his grandmother Gigi. Sinclair considers the painting to be his family's "brush with greatness immortalized".
While Captain Overkill and the SWAT team watch on videocam, Finn manages to trap Sinclair and Hughes inside the safe while freeing Alexis. Out in the yard, Mason has built a snowman around Jessica, trapping her, too. Just as Curtis and Catherine get home, the police arrive and cart away the thieves. As a reward for returning the painting, the museum provides them with four member passes to the museum, good for one year. They also receive $30,000 for capture of the three crooks wanted in several different states. After figuring out how to divvy the reward money, Finn and Catherine contact Captain Overkill to thank him and to offer him a plane ticket home so that he can have Christmas with his family. After opening presents on Christmas morning, Finn goes outside to play with Mason. In the final scene, the thieves are shown spending their Christmas being photographed and booked.
