A nice space shooter, brought to us by the ultimate gaming company of the past, Konami

This game is another in a long line of fun space shooters from the past, and brought to us by Konami, who usually put out great games back in the day. They are still okay, but not as good as they were back then. This game is one of the sequels to the game, Lifeforce, and as such plays like that game. I have also played a couple of other SNES space shooters, Super R-Type and Darius Twin and this one easily surpasses both games as far as length goes. I kept thinking I had won the game and another level would be upon me! There is a stretch where I had to take on three or four, boss type enemies in a row and the game still kept going! Then I had to take on a wall that led to another corridor where I took out this strange walkers and after defeating them, the game still went on! Finally, in a stage that looked straight out of Lifeforce, I encountered the final boss.

I cannot really say what the story is in this game as I do not have the manual and there is nothing to really suggest what is going on. If it is like Lifeforce, then you are battling a huge monster that is trying to engulf the universe; however, the way the stages present themselves really does not back this up. The game play consists of left to right and blasting everything in sight. The game is unique in that when you defeat a boss, you do not have a level break. Instead the game keeps going. You usually progress through a set up type screen, before encountering the meat of the level and then face off against some sort of spacecraft or other strange horror in space. The level ups in this one are awesome as you can fill the screen with death if you get all the options and power your ship to the max! Like Lifeforce, except that Lifeforce had a few levels where it was an overhead view and I find it a bit disappointing there were no stages like that here. Strange too, if they can do that on the Nintendo, then surely the Super Nintendo could provide an overhead stage or two.

Overall, this game is really fun. It is difficult, but what space shooter game during this era isn't? There are a couple, but not many. This one is also a lot longer than a lot of those others too, adding to the challenge and fun as this one is not over before you know it. Also, being a Konami game, the music and graphics are all very good too. Just a lot of fun and a great addition to anyone who collects old school games.

From Legend to Myth indeed

Warning: Spoilers
Gradius 3 for the SNES is, in my opinion, the zenith of the entire series and one of the best games of the 16 bit era. Wildly varying stages, vibrant graphics, and memorable bosses ranging from an Audrey II nightmare plant to a nightmarish spider walker make for a memorable experience. This game is also quite long for a SHMUP, featuring ten stages! The features that made the arcade version unplayably difficult have been tuned down in this release--you can now continue, Stage 2 won't give you an aneurysm, there is no "Crystal Stage" and the final stage has been broken into two. Strangely, despite being an early SNES release, it has one of the best soundtracks of any game for the system. But if you're unlucky enough to run into the arcade release instead of the SNES version...get ready for a nightmarish shooter that somehow combines Bullet Hell with the worst aspects of "old" SHUMPs (i.e. hyper accurate enemy bullets). If you finish the SNES version, you've played a legend. If you finish the arcade version, you are a myth.
