Exclusive: More citizens will head to the polls this year for elections than any other in history, and the political fever has reached Series Mania.
This year’s event in Lille, France contains four political dramas in competition — not surprising given almost 50% of the world will vote for new leaders in more than 64 elections (including the European Union), according to Time magazine.
“It is all things political in 2024,” said Leona Connell, Chief Commercial Officer at Newen Connect, the sales arm of TF1 Group’ owned French sales house’s Newen Studios that will representing two of the highest profile political titles at Series Mania, In the Shadows and 8 Months.
In the Shadows (Dans L’Ombre) comes from Versailles and Rembrandt director Pierre Schoeller, who adapted a novel from former French Prime Minister Edouard Philippe and Gilles Boyer, a political insider who served as Philippe’s advisor.

French distribution company Newen Connect is bringing their latest non-fiction series to the London TV Screenings. “Master Sapiens” is a dive into the Lascaux Cave, considered by experts to be the first art school in history. The series is available as one 52′ documentary or two 45′ episodes, produced by Pernel Media, with C8 / Planète + holding broadcasting rights in France.
“Master Sapiens” director Nathalie Laville, a documentary filmmaker specialised in archaeology, first thought the project to be impossible since the Lascaux Cave has been closed for visitation to the public since becoming a protected Unesco World Heritage Site in 1963. Speaking with Variety ahead of the London TV Screenings, Laville recalls how a key discovery made the series viable.
“I was worried because I knew the cave had been closed to the public and scientists but, as I dug in, I realised there was now a state-of-the-art 3D clone of the cave.

Peacock’s Apples Never Fall, MGM+’s Hotel Cocaine and Nrk’s buzzy drama about Leonard Cohen, So Long, Marianne will be in the International Competition race at Series Mania in March.
The shows will be up against BBC Three’s UK series Boarders, France 2 drama Dans L’Ombre (In the Shadows), Ard’s German series Herrhausen, the Banker and the Bomb, ABC Australia’s House of Gods, and Franco-Hungarian co-production Rematch, which is for Arte, Disney+ and HBO Europe.
The shows comprise an interesting cross-section of U.S. and European projects, with the Annette Bening-starring thriller Apples Never Fall among the highest profile. Hotel Cocaine, about a Cuban expatriate who re-made his life in Miami, is among MGM+’s biggest recent bets, while So Long, Marianne has been building steam as a study into the life of singer-songwriter Cohen and his muse, Marianne Ihlen.

This article contains spoilers for What We Do In The Shadows season 5 episode 4.
Politics are a draining business, as local community jurisdictions are filled with meaningless edicts requiring endless paperwork. This is the clot to the workings of American society, but lifeblood to those who thrive on the mind-numbing boredom of legislative agendas, especially those filed in triplicate. What We Do in the Shadows season 5 episode 4 “The Campaign” takes on the establishment, speaking hard truths to power in order to drain it.
“The Campaign” is filled with surprises. One is there is a cap on how many DUIs can be on someone’s record before being given the okay to run for office on Staten Island. This is ultimately the reason Sean Rinaldi (Anthony Atamanuik) is dropping out of the race for Staten Island Comptroller, in spite of all the hard work he put in to make his platform inclusive in “Pride Parade.

Gordon Willis is considered by many to be one of the greatest cinematographers in the history of cinema, with his work on films like "The Godfather" trilogy, "Annie Hall," "Manhattan," and "Klute" hailed as the definitive cinematic look of the late 1970s. Willis was given the nickname "The Prince of Darkness" by fellow cinematographer Conrad Hall, a reference to Willis' sophisticated use of shadow and underexposed film. Think of Marlon Brando as Vito Corleone in "The Godfather," often cloaked in shadow just as dark as his pitch-black tuxedo jacket.
Willis' skills were on another level, and in our current era where everything seems to be plagued by a curse of darkness, it's a shame that more cinematographers aren't looking toward his example. Fortunately, director Benjamin Caron of "Andor" fame specifically wanted to channel the work of Gordon Willis for his upcoming A24 thriller with Julianne Moore and Sebastian Stan, "Sharper.

Considering American Horror Story: Double Feature largely revolves around Provincetown’s secret supply of life-changing (and occasionally life-ending) pills, we’ve spent relatively little time with its creator, the mysterious Chemist. But all that is about to change.
Episode 4 finally affords us some quality time with Angelica Ross’ character by flashing back to her fateful arrival in P-Town five years earlier. As she explains to a highly skeptical Holden, she recently left her job at a lab in Providence, referring to it as an “ugly divorce.” And Holden is absolutely right to be skeptical of her, just not for the reason he initially suspected.

There are plenty of other reasons to watch, but the opening credits for “Wellington Paranormal” distill the show’s appeal down to its essence. The credits introduce the three central figures in this survey of mysterious happenings in and around New Zealand’s capital. There’s a pair of police officers — O’Leary (Karen O’Leary) and her partner Minogue (Mike Minogue) — and the officer they both report to, Sergeant Maaka (Maaka Pohatu).
Behind these character introductions is a synthy, self-aware theme tune that wouldn’t be out of place in a “news of the weird” local cable access roundup, or even a basic cable reality show about cryptids disguised as an investigative documentary. Fake news clippings flash across the screen, one of them with a headline including the word “Vampirey.” It’s unrepentantly goofy, with just enough of that mockumentary veneer to keep the show nominally hemmed in to a recognizable format.

Does parenting get any easier as your kids get older? If you were to ask Breeders‘ Paul and Ally, that answer would probably be “hell no.”

The following contains spoilers for What We Do in the Shadows season 2 episode 10.
Near the end of the superb What We Do in the Shadows season 2 finale, wayward familiar Guillermo de la Cruz returns to his master Nandor’s mansion to discover that he, Nadja, Laszlo, and Colin Robinson have hit the town to take in the legendary Nouveau Théâtres Des Vampires. Guillermo is very impressed with the attention to detail on the invitation but then a particular detail catches his eye – the unmistakable logo of the Vampiric Council.
“Only an idiot would go to something…this is clearly a trap,” Guillermo says. Then upon remembering exactly who he’s talking about adds: “Oh my God, they’re all gonna die.”
Yes, the Vampiric Council and their very understandable grudge returns in a big way in “Nouveau Théâtres Des Vampires.” As Guillermo correctly surmised, the Council used the cover of...

This What We Do in the Shadows review contains spoilers.
What We Do in the Shadows Season 2 Episode 10
In the What We Do in the Shadows season 2 finale, “Nouveau Théâtre des Vampires,” all the world’s a stage and the players merely vampires. It is a bittersweet ending to a strangely eventful and celebratory season, because parting is such sweet, though often salty, sorrow.
The first parting comes very early. Nandor the Relentless (Kayvan Novak) opens the episode in his coffin, a foreboding sign the episode will be a special event. The ancient vampire has to do it without any help because he wakes to find he was abandoned by his loyal familiar. Guillermo (Harvey Guillén) leaves with just a one-word note, “sorry.” But who cares, the Staten Island vampires are going to Nouveau Théâtre des Vampires, or Vampire Theater, as Colin Robinson puts it, g-damn it.

Welcome back, my friends, to the show that never ends. Horror has always been cyclical, and if that’s true, we have lucked out to be swirling around in a lot of good stuff. The best thing about 2019 in horror has been the variety: if you wanted a straight-up slasher, it was there. Ghosts? Covered as well. Creature features? Check. But in the world of horror, enough is never enough, so I’m going to plow through a whole whack of things I’ve liked and loved this past year.

On our Corpse Club podcast last year, we recorded a retrospective series on the 2010s and it really put into perspective how great the last ten years have been for original horror content. We went from years in the early 2000s where it would be tough for me to put together a top ten list to a situation where it’s hard for many people to keep up with all the great horror content across different mediums and streaming services.
For those that are new to Daily Dead, we handle our year-end lists a little differently. Rather than just covering films, our lists can extend to TV, games, collectibles, events, and anything else genre-related. In short, we’re sharing with you a list of our favorite horror experiences from 2019. Check back every day over the next week to find out what made the cut for the rest of the Daily Dead team.

A former rock & roll drummer, Garrett T. Capps kickstarted a solo career as a left-field country singer while living in the Texas Hill Country. His songs approach the country tradition from unexpected directions, making room for Hawaiian lap steel, modular synthesizer and arty arrangements along the way. Capps calls it “Nasa country.” Spacey and soundscape-influenced, his music takes center stage on the newest installment of Walking the Floor, where host Chris Shiflett champions his Capps’ sound as “spooky cosmic country” that “makes you wanna break furniture.”

It has been a busy 2018 for award-winning Indian actor Manoj Bajpayee. He featured in smash Bollywood hits “Baaghi 2” and “Satyameva Jayate,” and in acclaimed independent films “In the Shadows,” “Missing” and “Love Sonia.” Bajpayee stars in and is a co-producer on “Bhonsle,” which had its world premiere at Busan Oct. 5 and is a nominee for the Kim Ji-seok Award.
In “Bhonsle,” directed by Devashish Makhija (whose “Ajji” played Busan in 2017), Bajpayee plays a reclusive Mumbai policeman who stands up against divisive factions. It is the actor’s third film in recent years at the festival after “Aligarh” in 2015 and “In the Shadows” in 2017. For Bajpayee, wearing the twin hats of an actor and a producer has been a balancing act. In the case of “Bhonsle,” he had to step in as a producer when existing producers backed out.

Delhi's dark alleyways get their closeup in filmmaker Dipesh Jain's Gali Guliyaan (In the Shadows), a psychological thriller about paranoia, isolation, and the long lasting effects of trauma. Khuddoos (Manoj Bajpayee) is a loner, a man who lives vicariously through his neighbors and who sees the world through the dozens of security monitors he has set up in his sparse office. He's obsessed with watching, with the voyeurism that makes him both all-knowing and invisible at the same time. He speaks only when necessary, and one gets the impression he'd forget to eat if he weren't reminded. His only real connection is to his friend Ganeshi (Ranvir Shorey), who helps to makes sure Khuddoos is fed and taken care of and protects him from the...

Film Bazaar: Three of the Work-in-Progress Lab projects at this year’s Film Bazaar are international co-productions, suggesting Indian filmmakers are getting to grips with the complexities of working with Europe.
Among the line-up of rough cuts screening at the market are Dipesh Jain’s In The Shadows, a co-production between UK-Indian production house Exstant Motion Pictures, founded by Shuchi Jain, and German producer Lena Vurma’s Dragonfly Films.
“Shuchi came on board early to produce and finance the film, but we didn’t have a huge amount of sales experience, so Lena joined to help us produce and handle sales on the film,” said Dipesh Jain, who met Vurma at Film Bazaar in 2013.
