As soon as Saw X, the tenth entry in the Saw franchise (you can read our review Here), was released last September, franchise producers Mark Burg and Oren Koules were already talking about the potential of a Saw XI. The official announcement came in December, along with a release date: September 27th. But over the last few months, the filmmakers have come to realize they need some extra time to make Saw XI something special, so the release has been pushed back a year, to September 26, 2025. So Lionsgate has unveiled a teaser trailer asking fans to play the waiting game, and you can check it out in the embed above.
Saw X screenwriters Pete Goldfinger and Josh Stolberg (who also wrote Jigsaw and Spiral: From the Book of Saw) have let it be known that they’re not coming back for the new sequel, but Saw X director Kevin Greutert...

Lionsgate is shaking up its release slate, with two genre releases affected. While The Crow reboot gets a small delay, don’t expect sequel Saw XI to arrive this Halloween season.
Rupert Sanders’ The Crow is shifting from its June release date and is now set for August 23, 2024, Deadline reports.
Bill Skarsgård leads the cast of The Crow as Eric Draven, with FKA Twigs co-starring. Danny Huston (30 Days of Night) also stars, alongside Laura Birn (Foundation), Sami Bouajila (A Son), and Jordan Bolger (The Woman King).
In the new movie, “Soulmates Eric Draven (Skarsgård) and Shelly Webster (FKA Twigs) are brutally murdered when the demons of her dark past catch up with them. Given the chance to save his true love by sacrificing himself, Eric sets out to seek merciless revenge on their killers, traversing the worlds of the living and the dead to put the wrong things right.

The long-running Saw franchise is headed back to the big screen this Halloween season, with the box office success of last year’s Saw X paving the way for this year’s Saw XI.
Bloody Disgusting can exclusively report this week that Saw X director Kevin Greutert will return to direct the upcoming Saw XI! In addition to Saw X, Greutert directed both Saw VI in 2009 and later Saw: The Final Chapter in 2010, along with the horror movies Jessabelle in 2014 and Jackals more recently in 2017. He also edited Saw I through V and Jigsaw.
This has to be considered very good news for Saw fans, as most felt that Saw X was a much-needed course direction for the franchise, finally bringing it back to the highs of the past. As one of the weirder “back to school” seasons in living memory rolls out, Hulu is heading back to school in its own way for September 2020.
The biggest Hulu original arriving to the streaming services stream this month is season 2 of coming-of-age comedy Pen15…which of course stars two adults who have already come of age playing their middle school selves.
Speaking of middle school, perhaps the biggest non-original addition to the Hulu library this month is the arrival of all The Twilight Saga movies on September 1. That should prove to be a real nostalgia trip for interested parties. Other library titles of note include Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle, The Terminator, and 2019’s Judy on September 25.
Bookending Hulu’s originals this month is another intriguing comedy, Woke. This series will star Lamorne Morris as a Black cartoonist who gets an unexpected wakeup call.

They knew it would take steely resolve and iron daring to go up against the violent sect who have brainwashed their teenage son, Justin. But the estranged Powell family and the cult deprogrammer they’ve hired in desperation had no idea how soon they would become the bloody prey in the suspense shocker, based on a true 1980s story, from director Kevin Greutert the visionary Saw VI and Saw 3D luminary. With February being a short month, genre fans only have a handful of horror and sci-fi arriving on VOD to look forward to over the next few weeks. One of my own most anticipated movies for 2016, the horror anthology Southbound, makes its VOD debut on February 9th, courtesy of The Orchard. For those of curious about two of the more buzzed-about remakes in some time – Martyrs and Cabin Fever – both films arrive on VOD on February 2nd and February 12th respectively.
Other notable titles hitting VOD this February include All Hallow’s Eve 2, Convergence, The Veil, Uncaged and Riddle Room.
All Hallows' Eve 2 (Rlj Entertainment) – February 2nd
Alone on Halloween, a young woman finds a mysterious VHS tape on her doorstep—a tape that shows a series of gruesome and ghastly tales that appear to be all too real. But these terrifying glimpses of damned souls are not the only horrors that stalk her.

I’m not sure if it’s because I had the opportunity to see and watch more this year, but to me, 2015 seems like it was such an exceptional year for genre films across the board. Once again, indie horror gave us a bevy of incredible films from a variety of subgenres, and even studio films seemed to step things up this year as well (a trend I do hope continues). Here’s a look at some of my favorite genre offerings from this year:
Turbo Kid: One of two movies in 2015 that left me with a huge, goofy-ass grin on my face from start to finish was Turbo Kid, the wickedly fun post-apocalyptic story of a young hero, an evil warlord, a quirky sidekick and her gnome stick. From its synth score to its unforgettable characters to its over-the-top gore to its ginormous, genre-loving heart, Turbo Kid is...

Chicago – We all know dramatic films win most of the awards, comedies are hit or miss and horrors often don’t deliver the scares they promise. The problem with the horror genre lately is Hollywood is afraid to go against a “proven” formula (for financial reasons) and really think outside the box.

After 2009’s “Paranormal Activity” took the world by storm (grossing $193 million worldwide on a tiny $15,000 production budget), producing it paved the way for Jason Blum and his Blumhouse Productions to produce and put his stamp on “Insidious,” “Sinister,” “The Purge,” “Ouija,” “The Lazarus Effect,” “The Boy Next Door,” “Jessabelle,” “Unfriended,” “Oculus” and all of their follow-ups. There pretty much isn’t a horror film released by Hollywood these days without Jason Blum attached to it. That’s a double-edged, monopolistic sword that has been producing new films without continuing to innovate.

The latest effort from Blumhouse Productions is The Lazarus Effect, a supernatural horror movie which stars Olivia Wilde and Mark Duplass as a pair of scientists who work on perfecting a serum that can bring the dead back to life. During one particular experiment, however, Wilde’s character is accidentally electrocuted and dies almost immediately. Struck down with grief, Mark decides to give her the serum. Though it does bring her back to the land of the living, she’s not exactly the same person that she was before her death.

After spectacularly failing to launch a franchise with Screen Gems’ awful The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones, director Harald Zwart is scaling down for his next film, having signed on to direct a microbudgeted horror flick for Blumhouse Productions.
Details about the pic are being kept tightly under wraps for now, but one intriguing aspect of the project, scripted by Robert Ben Garant (Jessabelle), is that it’s being aimed at families, not typically a target audience for horror films.

Details about the pic are being kept tightly under wraps for now, but one intriguing aspect of the project, scripted by Robert Ben Garant (Jessabelle), is that it’s being aimed at families, not typically a target audience for horror films.

The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones director Harald Zwart has signed on to direct Blumhouse Productions' latest microbudgeted horror film. Robert Ben Garant (Jessabelle) wrote the script. Blumhouse has an excellent track record when it comes to making highly profitable microbudgeted horror features (including Paranormal Activity, The Purge and Insidious), but the interesting part of this new feature is that it's geared toward families. The logline is being kept under wraps for now. Blumhouse’s Jason Blum is producing with Garant, while Jeanette Brill and Couper Samuelson will executive produce. Jessabelle is yet another in the long line of Blumhouse-inspired supernatural thrillers that have flooded the market since the success of the like of Insidious, The Conjuring et al. This time round we follow a young woman, the titular Jessabelle, returning to her childhood home in Louisiana in order to recuperate from a horrific car accident which killed her boyfriend – on the very day they were set to move in together (oh the irony). Once settled in, she comes face to face with a long-tormented spirit that has been seeking her return; and – in a complete twist – has no intention of letting her leave. Dun dun dun!!!

★★★☆☆ Jessabelle (2014) makes a good case that horror movies can succeed without - or rather in spite of - the requirement to scare the viewer. Is that a paradox, a disappointment or even a perversion? Ghost train thrills have their place, but the genre will always be at its best when an air of beguiling strangeness and the thematic core trump the demands for what is often a cheap and quick fright. On this occasion plot revelations and twists in carry historical poignancy in a manner that far outweighs the spooky context. The film comes off like a nightmare version of Who Do You Think You Are? Jessabelle (Sarah Snook) is injured in a car crash and returns to her childhood home in South Louisiana. It is far from a happy place.

Chicago – “Predestination” is a time travel game of limited pieces, in which two beings are not who they seem. Twists abound in a story that gets credit for jarring narrative directions, but this adaptation of Robert A. Heinlein’s “All You Zombies” remains limited in its potential, especially as it fails to evolve past its spiritual predecessors “Source Code” and “Looper.”

This weekend, Michael and Peter Spierig (Daybreakers) are celebrating the release of their latest project, a mind-bending time travel tale called Predestination, which follows a Temporal Agent (Ethan Hawke) on his last assignment as he attempts to stop a killer from launching a deadly attack on the Us population. Before he can put to rest his mission, he meets a writer (Sarah Snook), who may be the key to finally catching the killer and allowing him to finally move on from his work once and for all.

Ethan Hawke will take on criminals with time-travel technology in “Predestination,” written and directed by Michael and Peter Spierig (“Daybreakers”). The Stage 6/Vertical Entertainment film is certainly aiming to push the boundaries of science fiction and that spirit has been evoked in the new Mondo poster for the film, designed by Jay Shaw. The poster is evocative and minimalist and is a great reminder of some of the sci-fi films from the late ’70s and ’80s. Take a look at it below the post; if you love Mondo posters in general, you’re sure to love this one. “Predestination” also stars Sarah Snook (“Jessabelle”), Ethan Hawke (“Boyhood”) and Noah Taylor (“Tomb [ Read More ]

In 2010, Ethan Hawke teamed up with up-and-coming filmmakers Michael and Peter Spierig for their futuristic vampire tale Daybreakers. Five years later, the trio are tackling time travel in a movie called Predestination, which finds Hawke portraying a Temporal Agent who must try and stop a horrific crime for his final assignment.
Predestination also stars Sarah Snook (Jessabelle), who delivers an incredible performance as a transgender writer Hawke meets in the field and is soon revealed to have a much bigger role in his work. After leaving quite the impression on audiences with her work in the horror film Jessabelle, Australian actress Sarah Snook returns to the screen with an even more gripping performance in the sci-fi thriller, Predestination.
Directed by Michael and Peter Spierig and based on Robert A. Heinlein’s short story All You Zombies, the film sees Snook playing a man who goes by the pen name of The Unmarried Mother. One night he crosses paths with The Bartender, played by Ethan Hawke. But, all is not as it seems, as both The Unmarried Mother and The Bartender are not who they say they are. And so begins a cerebral, time-travel tale that is full of twists and turns which I wouldn’t dare spoil for you here.

*there are spoilers here. Director: Kevin Greutert. Writer: Robert Ben Garant. Cast: Sarah Snook, Joelle Carter, Mark Webber, David Andrews and Ana de la Reguera. Jessabelle is a supernatural thriller. This title was recently released through video-on-demand, by Blumhouse Production. Lacking in any true horror, the film offers a great setting, but a mundane tone. Thrills are relegated to a few fight scenes as the protagonist does her best to uncover a long buried family secret. Her digging uncovers several tropes, with the film moving towards a predictable conclusion. Jessabelle is a very watered down thriller, which will satisfy few. The story begins with tragedy. Jessabelle (Sarah Snook) is ready to start a family, with her boyfriend and new baby. A speeding semi, in a residential area, puts her dreams to rest, permanently. Jessabelle is forced to stay with her father, in a remote mansion. Here, she begins to see strange visions,...

In the movie, Snook plays Jessie, a woman whose future plans for happiness are forever destroyed when a truck crashes into her boyfriend’s car, killing him and seriously injuring her.
Devastated by what has happened, Jessie decides to travel back home to Louisiana to recover from her injuries. While at the old family house, Jessie comes across a set of videotapes that her mother left for her when she turned 18, but watching them ends up releasing an evil spirit who becomes intent on returning to the real world.

In the happy opening scenes of Jessabelle, a happy young woman, Jessie (Sarah Snook), happily gets into a car with her happy boyfriend as they happily prepare to move in together — right before a truck plows into their car, instantly killing him and sending her to the hospital. It’s the last nice thing that happens to anyone in this lonely little horror flick, and its distant memory haunts the rest of this melancholy story.Confined to a wheelchair (she has several more months before she can walk again), Jessie is brought by her once-estranged father back to her childhood Louisiana home, a big, remote, empty villa along the bayou. Mom died long ago, and Dad is a gruff, unfriendly sort, prone to suspicion and secrecy. On the ground floor of the house, he pulls aside a shelf to reveal a door leading to a secret room. This, we learn,...

There’s a reason most horror films don’t take place in modern, shiny and bright locales, and that reason is atmosphere. Those kind of places don’t have it leaving the filmmakers to have to work extra hard to manufacture it. Most horror films rely on their setting — the spooky old house, cemetery, asylum, etc — to create that base atmosphere over which they lay their story, and Jessabelle, the new film from the Blumhouse genre factory, is no different. It’s just chosen a more interesting setting. Jessabelle (Sarah Snook) is pregnant, happy and moving in with the man she loves, but in an instant all of that is taken from her. Left recovering in a wheelchair and with no other options, she returns to her childhood home along the Louisiana bayou under the care of her distant, alcoholic father. She rolls around the house, staring off across the water and otherwise killing time until she...

Ring Her Bell: Greutert Steps Outside Franchise For Promising Results
Considering that Jessabelle is directed by editor and eventual director of two Saw films, Kevin Greutert (he got credit for six and straight-to-dvd release number seven), his first foray outside of schlock genre isn’t the torporific eyesore one might have predicted. Written by Robert Ben Garant, better known as Deputy Travis Junior from the series “Reno 911!,” the film manages enough general interest to keep us wondering what will happen to its protagonist, even though it’s lack of tension and absence of thrills racks up quite a bit of dismay. Though a pleasantly peculiar finale at last breaks free of its quagmire of cliché, it can’t quite make up for the inert build-up, as well as a handful of illogical details that annul any of the film’s more successful moments.

Jessabelle is a bit of an odd experience, blending a fangless voodoo fantasy with some seriously unnerving scares about inner-demons going bump in the night. While such an imbalance might not sound completely unheard of, the seamless way Reno 911! prankster Robert Ben Garant scripts this Southern spooker manages to polish rougher edges with invasive psychological horror that’s surprisingly nightmare-worthy. Even with director Kevin Greutert’s horror experience coming from the overly-gory Saw franchise – specifically the final two splatterfests – Jessabelle remains solely story-driven thanks to atmospheric haunted house tropes, not distracting, stomach-churning gore. Isn’t it nice when horror movies respect their audience and take time to craft white-knuckle scares worthy of a few less hours of sleep, instead of Ouija-like backhanded scare tactics?
