Baby’s first red carpet!
Jonathan Rhys Meyers and wife Mara Lane brought their 12-month-old Wolf to his first film premiere for the 12th Man on Monday in Fredrikstad, Norway. The family of three was dressed to the nines with the father-son pair wearing matching tuxedos and bow ties while the mother of one chose a red off-the-shoulder gown.
The actor, 40, and his then-fiancée Lane, who have been together since January 2013 and reportedly got engaged in December 2014, welcomed their first child in December 2016.
Meyers and Lane previously walked the red carpet together in September at the 2017 Boston Film Festival together without their baby boy.

The six talented entertainers go from home to home, praising housewives until the flattered ladies have no choice but to buy their irresistible items. Business flourishes and a bright new future can be seen on the horizon. But questions about Bermann’s past catch up with him: Could he have collaborated with the Nazis? The smart, uncompromising U.

In this week’s missile of a The New York Times story about the many alleged indiscretions of Harvey Weinstein, one of his past colleagues, former Miramax Los Angeles president Mark Gill, describes Weinstein’s professional climb from indie producer to Hollywood titan. “From the outside, it seemed golden — the Oscars, the success, the remarkable cultural impact.” Yet Gill said the persistent whispers that Weinstein was mistreating women were in fact “the biggest mess of all.”
While The Weinstein Co. co-founder publicly championed women’s rights, his accusers say that he was a hypocrite, secretly propositioning them for massages, kisses and more. One month after Weinstein distributed “The Hunting Ground,” a documentary about rapes on university campuses, he allegedly groped a college-aged woman in his office. Weinstein, 65, has a well-documented, on-the-record history of unflattering behavior, even against women (like in 2002, when he publicly berated director Julie Taymor at a screening of her film,...

In the days and months before he mowed down concertgoers from his high-rise hotel suite, gunman Stephen Paddock rented rooms overlooking two other music festivals in Las Vegas and Chicago, authorities said.
They gave no details on what his intentions might have been.
The disclosures came as investigators struggled for a fourth day to explain what led the 64-year-old high-stakes gambler to open fire Sunday night on an open-air country music festival from the 32nd floor of the Mandalay Bay hotel casino. He killed 58 people and injured nearly 500 before taking his own life.

I've always wondered what it would be like to spend an entire day with someone like Derek Hough, the actor, choreographer and singer who became famous for his time as a professional dancer on ABC’s Dancing With the Stars. I’ve interviewed him countless times on red carpets or inside industry events, but I never expected a day in the park with him to be so intimate or inspiring.
I recently joined the performer on a visit to the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore in Porter, Indiana, along the southern shore of Lake Michigan. Hough was there in celebration of the National Park Foundation's "Find Your Park" initiative, a campaign to promote the lesser known parks across the country. We spent the day exploring the park, hiking sand dunes, sharing lots of laughs while kayaking and listening as the park rangers filled us in on some of the fascinating stories about the national lakeshore. In 2017, we’ve seen five specialized subtitled films gross over $1 million. But the languages aren’t French, or German, or from anywhere in western Europe: The winners are Turkish, Farsi, Yiddish, and Hebrew.
These films came from Turkey, Iran, Israel, and even the United States, and played at conventional “art house” theaters (as opposed to releases from India, China, Mexico, and elsewhere, which aim at ethnically similar audiences).
Once upon a time, $100 million and more (in adjusted grosses) was possible for films like “La Dolce Vita,” “Life Is Beautiful,” and “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon”: more recently, “Amelie,” “Pan’s Labyrinth,” and “The Motorcycle Diaries” easily surpassed $20 million. However, over the last few decades we’ve seen the subtitled market shift from decline to near collapse.

What happened this year shows some revival in the market, but with some twists.

Yesterday afternoon, the Toronto International Film Festival announced their award winners. Notably, the Audience Award, which is the top prize at Tiff, went to Martin McDonagh’s Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri. The runner ups were, perhaps surprisingly, Craig Gillespie’s I, Tonya, as well as Luca Guadagnino’s Call Me By Your Name. The win for Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri was slightly surprising, though the word out of Toronto has been incredibly positive. After taking a prize recently at the Venice Film Festival for Screenplay, it’s currently the most awarded contender of the year so far. If nothing else, that’s a nice head start for a movie such as this one. Looking specifically at the Audience Award and thinking in terms of its history, this is a somewhat reliable indicator of prestige. Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri now joins a group that has five prior Best Picture winners,...

Chicago – Jerry Lewis had a long and winding life, dying last week at the age of 91. Through that life he had many show business lives – including the inevitable addictions – surviving all of the them with his signature comic style. He also was featured in over 70 films, and HollywoodChicago.com remembers three of them.

When the gawky 19 year-old Lewis met the suave singer Dean Martin in 1946, little did they know that they would become the most popular act in America for several years, and make 16 films together between 1949 through 1956. Their box office draw was white-hot, so much so that neither of them could keep up with the blur of what happened to them. “Martin & Lewis” eventually broke up at the height of their fame in 1956, during which Martin famously said, “Jer, when I look at you,...

Every year, on the evening of August 6th, the people of Hiroshima gather along the banks of the Ota River and light more than 10,000 paper lanterns as the final part of a deeply moving peace ceremony. The memorial event caps off a day of reflection that includes film screenings, musical performances, and a wide variety of different speeches. Hibakusha — survivors of the nuclear blasts — gather around the Atomic Bomb Dome, many of them joined by their children and grandchildren. One particularly animated man performs a parable about the horrors visited upon his hometown, while a British ex-pat translates his story into English for the foreigners in attendance. The atmosphere is solemn, but not somber. There’s good food. Even the tourists start to loosen up.
However, perhaps the most striking thing about how Hiroshima chooses to commemorate its defining tragedy is the way in which the city focuses on the...

Isabelle Huppert, Mariachi and a History Lesson: Cannes Celebrates Its 70th Year With a Lively Night
The Cannes Film Festival aims to show great movies, but it also knows how to throw a good party. That much was evident late at night in the waning hours of a glitzy dinner on Tuesday night at Port Pierre Canto to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the festival, when Salma Hayek surprised guests with a mariachi band.
The Mexican film luminaries in the room — including “Three Amigos” Guillermo Del Toro, Alejandro Gonzalez Iñarriuto and Alfono Cuaron as well as actors Diego Luna and Gael Garcia Bernal — all crowded around a single table to lead a boisterous crowd in numerous songs. They were joined by guests from all over the world, from directors Michel Hazanavicius and Paolo Sorrentino to Sony Pictures Classics co-president Michael Barker, 88-year-old French New Wave legend Agnes Varda and Hayek, who eventually led a conga line to the stage while shooting an iPhone video of the whole affair.

Resistance is a new film project in development that will be based on the true events of Marcel Marceau, a French actor and mime most famous for his stage persona, “Bip The Clown." Marceau became an orphan when his father, a kosher butcher, was killed in Auschwitz. Afterward, he took up the art of miming to bring hope to other orphans who had lost their parents to the Nazis.
According to Variety, "The film will focus on Marceau’s involvement in the French resistance when his country was occupied by the Nazis during World War II."
Marceau was made Grand Officier de la Légion d’Honneur in 1998 and was awarded the National Order Of Merit in France for his work in the resistance. He also won an Emmy along with many other awards.

Jonathan Jakubowicz to write and direct.
Jesse Eisenberg will play the legendary mime Marcel Marceau in Resistance, a feature that will focus on his involvement in the French resistance during the Second World War.
The film will be in the vein of Life Is Beautiful, in which comedy was used as a device to help children survive the Holocaust.

I’ve liked Lin-Manuel Miranda for a good while now. I say that because I first saw him way before his Hamilton acclaim but definitely not too early in his career. I first saw him when he played a mental patient in the show House, and I thought he was excellent. But I can’t help think of one person when I admire all the accolades Miranda is getting right now: Roberto Benigni. Remember when Roberto was the “it” guy after winning his Oscar for Life is Beautiful? No one could stop talking about Benigni for at least a year. But what

Uncomfortable as it is to admit, there have been so many mediocre Holocaust movies post-Schindler's List that a certain fatigue has set in.
Exceptions exist, of course — films like Roman Polanski's The Pianist or Lajos Koltai's Fateless, which, through their clarity of vision and lack of sentimentality, force us to see the horror with fresh eyes. But most screen depictions of this defining 20th-century atrocity, no matter their angle, rely on predictable emotional, visual and musical cues to coax the audience toward weepy catharsis (see: Life is Beautiful, Jakob the Liar, The Boy in the Striped Pajamas, The Book Thief, Woman in...

Ferne Pearlstein’s “The Last Laugh” is a rather safe and genteel documentary about the limits of humor (especially as they pertain to the Holocaust), but it opens with a subtly provocative sequence of events that’s hard to shake. Rob Reiner, but one of the film’s many different talking heads, tells a very benign joke about two Jews who tried to kill Hitler. Gilbert Gottfried pops up to get in on the action. Then we cut to Mel Brooks — perhaps the single most significant figure in permitting modern Jews to make light of their darkness — and he performs some light Hitler shtick, culminating in a shoutout to “The guy who made me money.”
Finally, and seamlessly, the film cuts to survivor and educator Renee Firestone, introducing the nonagenarian just as she launches into a bit about Dr. Josef Mengele inspecting some of the young women on whom he was hoping to experiment.

George Carlin had a famously controversial stand-up routine, in which he attempted to prove rape can be funny. Taken at face value, and especially if you aren’t familiar with Carlin, this sounds like it could be a shock-value gag. In delivery, it is not, and by the end of the act – which is a thinly veiled rant against political correctness — his point resonates.
But are some topics truly off limits? This is the compelling question of Ferne Pearlstein’s The Last Laugh, a documentary that questions whether the Holocaust is something that can ever be a source of humor.
Pearlstein interviews many noteworthy figures from the comedy world — Mel Brooks, Gilbert Gottfried, Sarah Silverman, David Cross, Rob Reiner and Carl Reiner, to name but a few – and what’s surprising is the disparity in their opinions on the subject. For example, one might be surprised to hear Brooks opine...

Just because a movie or a celebrity wins an Oscar, that doesn't mean the win was deserved. While the Academy Awards are seen as the capstone to awards season -- and one of the highest honors in the business -- we all know that stars and movies get snubbed or overlooked all the time.
What's worse is when we look back at what did win, and shake our heads in confusion and disbelief. So, with the 89th Academy Awards just around the corner, let's take a look back over the show's illustrious history at a few times the Academy voters clearly made a mistake.

Everybody there, no matter how confident they are in their chances, wants to win an Oscar. Oftentimes, these talents are calm and collected while they experience what may very well be the best moment of their lives. Other times, they expose the sheer excitement they're feeling.
With the Oscars coming up this weekend, we're taking the chance to throwback to some of the best Oscar winning moments in history. We're hoping this year can deliver some equally iconic moments.

There was always a chance for the best picture category at the 2017 Academy Awards to feature solid representation for female producers and, with the nominations official, the numbers are in. Turns out there are five of the nine films in this year’s top category with women behind it — but how does that stand up to the rest of Oscar history?
As mentioned above, there are five out of the total nine films in the best picture category this year that took some girl power to get made. There’s Hell or High Water (Carla Hacken and Julie Yorn), Hidden Figures (Donna Gigliotti and Jenno Topping), Lion (Angie Fielder), Manchester by the Sea (Kimberly Steward and Lauren Beck), and finally Moonlight (Adele Romanski and Dede Gardner). This leaves out Arrival, Fences, Hacksaw Ridge, and La La Land as...

Cecchi Gori Pictures, once an Italian production giant behind such films as Il Postino, Life Is Beautiful and Se7en, has made its first big move since declaring Chapter 11 bankruptcy, filing a complaint on Wednesday against its founder, Vittorio Cecchi Gori, and former owners contending that rights to dozens of film properties, including Martin Scorsese's recently released historical drama Silence, a Scorsese documentary and Michael Mann's upcoming Enzo Ferrari, were fraudulently transferred. The company is now demanding a temporary restraining order and an injunction in a move intended to recover these assets.

2016 movies Things to Come (pictured) and Elle have earned French cinema icon Isabelle Huppert her – surprisingly – first National Society of Film Critics Best Actress Award. 2016 Movies: Isabelle Huppert & 'Moonlight' among National Society of Film Critics' top picks Earlier today (Jan. 7), the National Society of Film Critics announced their top 2016 movies and performances. Somewhat surprisingly, this year's Nsfc list – which generally contains more offbeat entries than those of other U.S.-based critics groups – is quite similar to their counterparts', most of which came out last December. No, that doesn't mean the National Society of Film Critics has opted for the crowd-pleasing route. Instead, this awards season U.S. critics have not infrequently gone for even less mainstream entries than usual. Examples, among either the Nsfc winners or runners-up, include Isabelle Huppert in Elle, Moonlight, Toni Erdmann, Casey Affleck in Manchester by the Sea, and Lily Gladstone in Certain Women. It’s not too often that foreign-language films get recognized for anything at the Oscars beyond the best foreign-language film category — but it does happen. And, believe it or not, it happens more for best original screenplay and best adapted screenplay than many other categories. A prime example of that is Toni Erdmann, Germany’s submission this year that is proving to be a cross-category threat, which could score a nomination — or a win — for its writing.
The story of Toni Erdmann — which has a solid Rotten Tomatoes score of 91% — follows a father who is trying to reconnect with his adult daughter after the death of his dog. It sounds simple enough but, of course, the two couldn’t be more unalike. The film premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in 2016 and where it won the Fipresci Prize. Since then, it...

Aside from the amazing characters, acting, and storytelling in Lion, the film had another unique aspect to it: just how much non-English is spoken. The Garth Davis-directed drama is considered a frontrunner by most critics in the best picture at the 2017 Oscars — but will language hold it back in the long run? Let’s take a look at history and see what we can learn.
While a large part of Lion is in English, there is also a substantial part of it that is in Bengali and Hindi. That’s because the plot — based on a 2013 memoir titled A Long Way Home — follows the true story of Saroo Brierley from becoming lost at the age of five, surviving many challenges, getting adopted by an Australian couple, and finding his birth family 25 years later. As our countdown continues, Andrew Pulver looks back on a harrowing Holocaust drama from Hungarian director László Nemes
• More on the best culture of 2016
The Holocaust is a subject so vast, so brutal and so uncompromisingly repulsive that it has defeated almost every director who has dared take it on: even the most confident film-makers seem to quail before the terrifying responsibility of massacre, torture and sadism – and, essentially, pull their punches. This applies as much to the hyperreal dynamism of Schindler’s List to the eyes-averted sentimentality of Life Is Beautiful, to the maudlin strains of The Pianist. Only documentaries – Alain Resnais’ haunting Night and Fog, the epic Shoah, the recently reconstructed German Concentration Camps Factual Survey – have got close to penetrating the mysteries of this most cataclysmic of human horrors.

There’s one director this year that has a chance at being a major crossover success by having two separate films nominated in both the best picture and best foreign language film categories: Pablo Larraín. This filmmaker has Jackie as well as Neruda and could join an elite group of directors who been able to have films — or even one film — in both of these major categories.
Jackie, which stars Natalie Portman as Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, is considered a frontrunner in the Oscars race this year by this site’s namesake, The Hollywood Reporter’s Scott Feinberg. Neruda, which follows an inspector who hunts down Nobel Prize-winning Chilean poet Pablo Neruda, is Chile’s submission for best foreign language film this year and is considered a major threat in that contest. Thus, this: 25 of the most triumphant movie moments of all time.
Everyone has that go-to feel-good movie which they stick on when life is getting them down. Had a bad week at work? Stick Four Weddings on. After receiving some top notch remixes for their song “No Money” courtesy of Skrillex and Marshmello over the summer, Galantis are teasing some new material in the form of an upcoming collaboration with Australian producer Hook n Sling. Exclusive: “We’re going through a sea change,” Lionsgate executive says of the film business today.
This Sunday, industry veteran and sales supremo Patrick Wachsberger, co-chairman, Lionsgate Motion Picture Group, will be honoured at the Zurich Film Festival with the event’s Game Changer Award, which is bestowed on an individual who has been able to “successfully navigate through the aggressively changing entertainment landscape.”
Wachsberger’s more than 30-year navigation of those choppy waters has seen him play a pivotal role in two billion-dollar franchises, multiple Oscar and Palme d’Or campaigns and two of the industry’s most successful independent film companies of recent decades.
However, the film business is more unpredictable than ever claims the former Summit boss, who spoke to Screen shortly before the surprise news that fellow Lionsgate co-chair Rob Friedman is to leave the company.
“We’re going through a sea change,” says the energetic La-based Frenchman. “The business...

Yesterday, the Toronto International Film Festival gave out its awards for 2016, with Damien Chazelle’s La La Land taking the top prize. That distinction, the People’s Choice prize, also known as the Audience Award, puts it into some very strong company (for those wondering, the first runner up was Lion, while the second runner up was Queen Of Katwe). The original musical, which stars Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone, has been winning over viewers for a few weeks now, starting out at the Venice Film Festival, continuing at the Telluride Film Festival, and now charming everyone at Toronto. At this point, it was already considered the frontrunner in Best Picture, but now, one can say it with more distinction. Frankly, it’s hard not to consider this the one to beat right now. In terms of this particular award and its history, this is a somewhat reliable indicator of prestige.
