Discovery Channel’s hit franchises, like “Gold Rush” and “Deadliest Catch,” featured plenty of blood and sweat. But where were the tears? That’s something Howard Lee immediately began asking, upon taking control of the network at the end of 2022.
After Lee was handed the keys to Discovery that December, “I spent my entire Christmas vacation devouring, scrutinizing, every single Discovery Channel show and familiarizing myself with it, like a fanboy. And looking at, of course, the ratings for each one and the budgets.”
As head of TLC, Lee helped grow the network to new heights thanks to blockbuster franchises like “90 Day Fiancé,” where emotion was his bread and butter. But after his crash course in Discovery fare, Lee felt that the flagship network could do a better job of creating programming that its audience found viscerally enthralling.

Jason Momoa is living the dream. Those are his words, as he describes his latest project, Max’s unscripted travel series, “On the Roam,” during which he travels the country to seek out craftsmanship, art, adventure and friendship, meeting different people with an assortment of skills along the way.
“This is everything I love to do, and I wanted to make a show about all the things that I love, respect and honor,” he tells Variety of the series, which debuts on Jan. 18. “Some of these people are the people I idolize. You think of it as a travel show, but it’s really all of these people opening their homes and lives to you. The more they’re peeling back these layers and letting me in, it was just an honor to find out their paths and how they got there.

Discovery Channel has landed the perfect host this year for “Shark Week,” none other than a huge fan of all ocean creatures — Aquaman.
Jason Momoa, who in real life dreamed of a career as a marine biologist before Hollywood anointed him an ocean god, is going back to his roots to celebrate all things shark.
“My heart is in the ocean,” Momoa told The Associated Press from Tahiti, moments before taking a trip to swim with some of the apex predators. “Doing ‘Shark Week’ is a no brainer.”

"The water's warm - so everything's marching north." HBO Docs has revealed an official trailer for After the Bite, a fascinating shark doc from filmmaker Ivy Meeropol. This is debuting during "Shark Week" this summer streaming on Max and on HBO to watch on TV. Local residents and vacationers flock to Cape Cod every summer begin to grapple with this alarming new reality of regular sharks while following the science to investigate. The title refers to fatal attack on a person in 2018 int he town of Wellfleet, Ma. After the Bite is a deep dive into how one coastal community is renegotiating their relationship with our rapidly changing environment. The changes are numerous: warmer waters, species interacting where they never had before, along with the rapidly increasing numbers of the shark's favorite prey, the North Atlantic gray seal, whose population has rebounded since seals were protected under the Marine Mammal Protection Act.

No relation to the anime of the same name or the Don Bluth film Titan A.E. for that matter, this Attack on Titan is – you guessed it – another creatively titled film from The Asylum. This one justifies its title by having a rebel faction on Saturn’s moon Titan object to Earth’s deal with the government to harvest water crystals. Since they launch an attack on us, the film, whose original title, Alien Space Battle, still appears in the end credits would be more accurately called Attack from Titan. But that just doesn’t sound the same.

Being able to boast that a franchise has lasted over two decades is impressive, but considering the world of "Jackass" requires putting the body, mind, arrest record, and stomach on the line at every turn, it's a damn miracle that everyone's favorite comedy stuntmen are still up to their usual shenanigans after all these years. The MTV series debuted in 2000 for three seasons but turned into an entertainment franchise including spin-offs "Wildboyz," "Viva La Bam," "Homewrecker," "Bam's Unholy Union," "Dr. Steve-o," "Bam's World Domination," "Bam's Bad Ass Game Show," a video game, TV specials (including Shark Week) five feature films, and the...

Because of course, you’ll want to watch a movie titled ‘Shark Island’, especially since a less than stellar shark movie is sometimes the best thing for the soul when a person needs to laugh. Figuring out the plot isn’t too hard since it’s about a group of individuals that go to an island, are doing a photoshoot, yadda, yadda, yadda, something about the island being the origin point of all sharks, and so on and so forth. All people really need to know about shark movies these days is that there’s a shark, people are going to do something stupid,

Discovery’s “Shark Week,” which begins today and runs through Sunday, Aug. 16, is, indeed, a learning experience — at least for those who weren’t aware that sharks have two penises. You’re welcome for that free bit of cocktail party banter.
This year’s “Shark Week” will consist of more than 20 hours of shark programming throughout the week. It will also celebrate the 20th anniversary of “Air Jaws.”
“Shark Week 2020” will take viewers to New Zealand, Australia and South Africa “to see how the global lockdown and reduced amount of human activity on the seas has given sharks the opportunity to reclaim the oceans,” Discovery said in its press release.

Back in June, when Jaws celebrated its 45th anniversary, film lovers everywhere waxed poetic about the influence of this incredible film. It’s true that Jaws has loomed large in our culture and continues to cut a powerful figure in film history. Jaws was the film that changed how movies are marketed. It inspired countless filmmakers, introduced new ways of shooting a film, and gave rise to sharks as a horror genre in and of themselves. The icon status of Jaws simply cannot be overstated.
All things considered, in its 45 years Jaws has occupied a place of cultural significance beyond how it functions as cinema. Summer is the right time to appreciate sharks. Pop culture has always intrinsically understood that, whether it was Steven Spielberg creating the summer blockbuster with Jaws in 1975 or Discovery Channel creating the couch potato with Shark Week in 1988.
The summer of 2020, however, stands to be the best time for these dead-eyed elasmobranch fish monsters in a long time. The coronavirus pandemic has beaches sparsely populated and sharks’ reign as king of the seas more unquestioned than ever. National Geographic is going to do its part to celebrate the summer of the shark with a five-week supersized Sharkfest of shark-related programming.
Nat Geo’s Sharkfest kicks off on Sunday, July 12 on National Geographic. Then National Geographic and its animal-imprint Nat Geo Wild will continue to air shark content from the networks’ existing library along with new specials several nights a week until concluding on Sunday, August 2.
Last year’s Sharkfest amounted to three weeks of programming.

HBO Max has acquired the U.S. rights to “On the Record,” Kirby Dick and Amy Ziering’s documentary that follows the accusers of music mogul Russell Simmons following its premiere at the Sundance Film Festival.
“On the Record” has been a hot button film since Oprah Winfrey revealed earlier this month that she’d step away from the project as an executive producer, which additionally led to Apple TV+ to drop it from its slate.
The documentary primarily follows Drew Dixon at the beginning of the #MeToo movement as she grapples with the decision to come forward about her accusations about Simmons. Dixon says she was raped by Simmons in his apartment in 1995 and quit the company shortly after. Simmons has denied all accusations of non-consensual sex.

Following a thunderstorm of Oprah Winfrey-related controversy and a successful Sundance Film Festival premiere, “On the Record” has secured domestic distribution at HBO Max.
A harrowing look at the struggle of women of color in the #MeToo movement, specifically those accusing hip-hop mogul Russell Simmons of rape and sexual assault, the film was meant to roll out via Winfrey’s Apple TV Plus overall deal. Her Jan. 10 withdrawal from the project forced the film to fly solo in Park City, where it went in search of a buyer.
UTA Independent Film Group brokered the deal on behalf of filmmakers Amy Ziering and Kirby Dick. This marks HBO Max’s first Sundance acquisition ever (following a splashy deal for Hugh Jackman’s “Bad Education” out of Toronto last September).

HBO Max has snapped up U.S. rights to Impact Partners’ and Jane Doe Films’ documentary On the Record, about the women who’ve accused music mogul Russell Simmons of rape. The movie stirred up a lot of controversy heading into its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival, with Oprah Winfrey removing herself from as executive producer, and thus pulling On the Record‘s distribution from Apple TV+.
Last year, HBO had another controversial Sundance documentary Leaving Neverland. However, On the Record will only air on streaming service HBO Max, not the linear pay cable network. Currently to be determined is whether On the Record gets a theatrical release. While many distributors such as Focus Features, Roadside Attractions, Amazon, CNN Films, IFC, Showtime and Netflix attended the Sundance premiere of the doc produced and directed by Kirby Dick and Amy Ziering, I heard most of them passed on making a bid.

Sling TV, Dish Network’s internet TV service, has added nine Discovery networks on its national and Spanish-language services, along with several thousand VOD titles.
At the same time, Sling TV customers currently remain without access to Univision or HBO channels, amid ongoing contract disputes between Dish and the programmers. As of the end of September, Dish reported a total of 2.37 million Sling TV subscribers but the lack of Univision and HBO threatens to impede its near-term growth.
With the launch of Discovery networks on Sling TV, pricing remains unchanged. The over-the-top service offers two plans — the single-stream Sling Orange, which includes Disney and ESPN networks; and the multistream Sling Blue, which includes NBC and Fox networks — priced at $25 per month each, or $40 per month when purchased together.

“I’m addicted to sharks,” says cinematographer Andy B. Casagrande IV, who has been shooting for Discovery’s Shark Week for 13 years.
As obsessions go, it may be an unusual one, but it has served Casagrande well over the past two decades as he’s worked on countless TV and film documentaries on the dangerous creatures. “I learn more each time I go under, and I want to inspire others to learn, ” he says. A great white shark sinking its teeth into a Tyrannosaurus rex? It can only be the bonkers full trailer for The Last Sharknado: It’s About Time, the sixth and final installment in Syfy’s genre oddity that became an instant meme overnight.
That’s because to cap off its fifth annual “Shark Week” event, the network unleashed The Last Sharknado on Sunday evening, and it was every bit as ridiculous as we’ve come to expect from the film series in which great white sharks rain down from the skies… literally.
But this time, there’s a twist. As the title suggests, The Last Sharknado plays fast and loose with time, resulting in a scenario where an airborne great white is able to chomp on a T-rex. And that’s not even the strangest part of Syfy’s final sizzle reel, as we also see cameos galore and multiple Tara Reids which,...

Usually Christmas is considered the “most wonderful time of the year” but don’t tell that to Discovery Channel.
The cable network begins the 30th edition of its annual “Shark Week” on Sunday, and according to data provided to TheWrap from Standard Media Index, those Great Whites have generated more than $36 million in advertising revenue over the past two years.
Per Smi, last year’s Shark Week brought in $20.2 million in advertising revenue, a jump of 59 percent over Discovery’s average weekly revenue in 2017 of $12.7 million. In 2016, Shark Week earned $16.6 million in revenue, a more modest jump of 37 percent from the 12.1 million in ad revenue that Discovery earned on a weekly basis.

Animal Planet’s “Dodo Heroes” highlights those who go to great lengths to save, protect, and rehabilitate animals — and this Saturday’s subject Pen Farthing takes that “heroes” part of the show title to a whole new level.
The man, who as a Royal Marine used to spend his days saving humans in war-torn Afghanistan, now spends them saving dogs there. But Farthing is still saving soldiers in a way, as his mission through his charity Nowzad — named after his own pooch from the war zone — is to reunite American military personnel with their unofficially adopted local four (and sometimes three)-legged friends.
The lengths that Farthing and his organization go through to export these forgotten street dogs from Afghanistan to their specific soldier in the United States is remarkable — as is the cost. A group of fans and budding YouTubers cower before The Meg in this awesome new teaser trailer for Jon Turteltaub’s giant shark thriller.

The company, which completed its $11.9 billion acquisition of Scripps Networks in March, is offering advertisers a package of 30 of its best-known series, guaranteeing first position in ad breaks in premiere episode of the shows and better reach among women between 25 and 54 than some programs that air on broadcast rivals. The Discovery series include “Deadliest Catch,” “Gold Rush,” “Queen Sugar,” “Chopped,” “Trading Spaces,” “On the Case with Paula Zahn,” “Shark Week”, “90 Day Fiancé,” “People Magazine Investigates,” “Property Bros.,” “House Hunters” and “Iron Chef Gauntlet.”
With more viewing of scripted programming taking place via DVR playback or through Svod services, says Jon Steinlauf, Discovery’s chief U.S. advertising sales officer, Discovery sees an edge to selling its many hours of non-fiction programming. The new package will not include repeat broadcasts.
