the film is forced to choose fantastic stories
yoggwork23 February 2019
In order to express some real thoughts, the film is forced to choose fantastic stories, complicated narrative lines and the return to traditional values at the end. When vested interests join forces to strangle Mutian, the world will eventually stagnate and be completely overthrown by disasters such as earthquakes. I think that if the director reconstructs the ending, will continue to pursue the will and action of Mutian, the mood of this film will be more far-reaching. "What you see is not necessarily the truth."

hilariously dark satire

Great movie. I don't think I've laughed this hard, or been so horrified, in a theatre for a while. It's a dark satire about backwards village life and the lengths the villagers will go to in order to get rid of a crazy, impulsive guy who is ruining their lives and who is seemingly impervious to warnings, beatings or banishment.

The plot doesn't proceed in chronological order; events are retold to a visiting doctor who came to the village to investigate rumours of a mystery illness. Sometimes, the same event will be shown again but with different details, as the doctor's understanding of what happened changes. Somehow, I couldn't help but sympathize with the insane, violent and anarchic villager no matter what he did.
