Phoebe Dynevor, star of TV’s Bridgerton, is in talks to star in Violent Night director Tommy Wirkola’s mysterious, untitled shark thriller.
Tommy Wirkola, director of festive action film Violent Night, is currently working on a thriller that involves sharks in some form, and said thriller could end up starring Phoebe Dynevor, previously of Bridgerton and Fair Play fame.
Dynevor is ‘in talks’ to star in Wirkola’s shark-based project according to Deadline, while further details are thinner on the ground than actual sharks. There’s no title to speak of and its plot is said to be “under wraps”; the concrete bit of information is that it’ll be produced by Hyperobject Industries, the production company founded by Adam McKay. It’s previously brought us such entertainments as Succession, The Menu and Don’t Look Up, the latter directed by McKay himself.

Something in the Water opens with an attack in a London subway station. Not by a shark on its way to visit relatives at the aquarium, but by a group of homophobes who take objection to Meg and Kayla daring to hold hands in public. It leaves Meg with mental and physical scars, as well as causing the pair to break up.
A year later, Lizzie and Dominic are getting married at a Caribbean resort, reuniting several old friends including Dominic’s sister Cam, Ruth and, much to each other’s dismay, Kayla and Meg. Now that everyone is here, they just need to do something stupid so they can become shark bait. Cam takes care of that by suggesting they all pile into a small motorboat...

The Requin. The Reef: Stalked. The Black Demon. Now Something in the Water. I’m reaching my breaking point with shark attack movies that are too distracted by other plotlines to deliver on their promise: shark attacks. Hayley Easton Street’s Something in the Water might be the biggest offender listed, taking roughly thirty minutes until the first shark-related incident, then another fifteen(ish) minutes for the first of frustratingly few substantial shark spottings. Cat Clarke’s screenplay tries to establish poignant storytelling about hate crimes, broken relationships, and debilitating traumas, but in doing so, forgets about the massive shark plastered all over the film’s marketing materials. Street and Clarke aim to elevate shark cinema with emotional throughlines, but sink the entire project with an alarmingly imbalanced approach.

It’s nobody’s fault but mine that every time I get to watch a shark attack movie, I instantly pit it against Jaws. Hayley Easton’s Something in the Water is not a completely wasted film, but it just lacks so many aspects that make these movies click. The reasonable runtime might be the only factor that prevents this film from being a complete snoozefest, but I’d be lying if I don’t accept that I did manage to get a good nap while watching it.
Spoilers Ahead
What happens in the movie?
Meg and Kayla are a couple who get in trouble with a bunch of homophobic women in the subway. Kayla loses her patience and flips them off, but Meg gets the beating instead of her. The women throw Meg down the stairs and kick her ceaselessly. Meg breaks up with Kayla, and a year later,...

A Fresh Take on Shark Thrillers and a Nostalgic Farewell to Outlander In an exciting blend of comedy and suspense, Something in the Water promises a unique cinematic experience that Lauren Lyle describes as Jaws meets Bridesmaids. This intriguing mix of genres aims to refresh the shark thriller motif by injecting a healthy dose of humor and camaraderie reminiscent of the beloved comedy Bridesmaids. Directed by Hayley Easton Street, known for her work on high-profile projects like Edge of Tomorrow and Star Wars: The Force Awakens, this film is not just about shark scares but also explores deeper themes. New shark movies these days often come with an overwhelming, not to mention frustrating sense of déjà vu. That’s largely because filmmakers have resigned themselves to rehashing the same ideas, over and over again. Something in the Water treads familiar waters, seeing as the characters here also find their vacation in ruins once they leave the beach. To be fair, this movie starts out differently than most others made in recent years; the main character is dealt a rather unfortunate card long before stepping into shark-infested waters. However, nothing that follows ever quite feels as scary or effective.
Something in the Water does what a lot of modern genre movies do now: they preface trauma with more trauma. A deadly shark encounter should be traumatic all on its own, but director Hayley Easton Street and writer Cat Clarke don’t think that’s enough for Meg (Hiftu Quasem) to endure in one lifetime.

There’s no shortage of films out there about groups of conventionally attractive twentysomethings, picturesque tropical holiday locations and killer sharks. Why watch yet another? Something In The Water doesn’t have any special gimmicks. The weather behaves itself, there are no dubious scientific experiments going on and everything has the usual number of heads. What it does differently is something very simple: it focuses on British people.
It’s surprising just how much this changes the character of the piece. For a start, they’re much less sheltered than the characters we’re used to. Secondly, they have a different kind of humour, and a different way of responding to adversity. Some of them already have experience of that. The film opens not with a shark attack but with a homophobic assault in a London Underground station – an assault which leaves Meg (Hiftu Quasem) with a permanent scar and Ptsd,...

There are sharks all up in the Seine in Netflix’s upcoming aquatic horror, Under Paris. Here’s the first trailer.
At some point, sharks will club together and get a PR manager; until then, we’ll keep getting films like Jaws, Sharknado, and upcoming efforts like Beast Of War, Something In The Water and Renny Harlin’s Deep Water.
To the ever-growing list we can now add Under Paris, coming to a small screen near you this summer courtesy of Netflix. If you haven’t gathered already: yes, the film really is about sharks swimming up the Seine to terrorise all the hundreds of people that (presumably) swim in Paris’ waters on any given day.
Yes, it’s all incredibly silly, but if the trailer’s anything to go by, everyone involved knows it’s all incredibly silly. Under Paris is directed by Xavier Gens, who broke through with the extremely gory 2007 indie horror,...

"Someone needs to swim for help." Studiocanal has revealed an official UK trailer for a shark horror movie titled Something in the Water, made by a VFX artist turned filmmaker named Hayley Easton Street. It's set for release in the UK in July this summer, though no US date confirmed yet. This all-female production is written by, directed by, produced by, and stars nothing but women. Awesome! "This summer, fear will find new depths." The survival thriller follows a group of five girlfriends who must fight for their lives in open water after a dream wedding transformed into a nightmare. Starring Hiftu Quasem, Lauren Lyle, Natalie Mitson, Nicole Rieko Setsuko, and Ellouise Shakespeare-Hart, as a group of friends on a holiday gone very wrong. It's always the same story in these shark movies, something goes wrong while out on the water. But this still looks pretty good! They'll never stop making more shark horror movies,...

11 August 2023 – Today, experimental artist Riovaz and fellow up-and-comer, Kanii drop a brooding new single “waiting alonE.” Soulful and bouncy yet disruptive, the track finds the 19-year-old musician expanding his sonic horizons by delivering an infectious yet ominous piece of electro-pop pageantry. Of the track Rio shares ““This is a song I made with Kanii at 4am one night. It feels like when you go home with someone and never see them again. Really fun but kinda dark at the same time.”
“Pick your side, I know you’re waiting alone,” the New Jersey native croons over bass-heavy production and fluttering synths. “Just take your time.” Rio’s tender voice is the perfect foil for the song’s gloomy soundscape. That comes through on the propulsive chorus when he belts, “I would take you, but you’re not mine to keep for long,” over layered effects and dizzying distortion. It’s...

Clarke has filed the suit in response to eight articles published in The Guardian in which he was accused of various incidents of misconduct by 20 women between 2004 and 2019.
The actor, producer, and director, best known for work such as Kidulthood and its two follow-up movies, has denied all of the allegations and said the articles have had a “catastrophic” effect on his career.
The $12m figure was obtained by the BBC, which said it had seen documents lodged at London’s High Court as part of the defamation claim. If Clarke wins the case, a judge will decide what damages he is entitled to.
Alongside claiming general damages for reputational harm, Clarke is looking for damages that cover specific financial losses. Clarke’s claim says The Guardian’s articles had a “devastating” impact on his finances,...

The third and final day of Pharrell’s Something in the Water festival at the Virginia Beach waterfront was canceled due to severe weather. The Sunday lineup had boasted Grace Jones, Clipse, Lil Uzi Vert, Wu-Tang Clan, 100 Gecs, Nile Rodgers & Chic, and more artists.

Pharrell’s Something In The Water festival returns to Virginia Beach this weekend after a one-year detour to the nation’s capital. The legendary producer pulled the 2022 festival from his hometown because of what he deemed a “toxic energy” from the local government after the fatal police shooting of his cousin, 25-year-old Donovan Lynch. The 25-year-old was shot by a cop whose body camera was not on. There was widespread sentiment that the Virginia Beach Police Department wasn’t giving the public satisfactory answers on what happened.

Pharrell Williams has expanded the lineup for Something in the Water, his upcoming music festival in Virginia Beach. Among the new additions is Arcade Fire, whose lead singer Win Butler was accused of sexual misconduct by four people in August 2022.
At the time, Butler said the relationships “were all consensual” while alluding to mental health issues as “context” for his behavior. Following the allegations, some Canadian radio stations pulled Arcade Fire’s music from the airwaves and Feist withdrew as an opener on the band’s European tour with a statement saying, “I can’t continue.” One month later, Beck followed suit by dropping off the North American leg without comment.
Anti-vaxxer conspiracy theorist M.I.A. has also been added to this year’s Pharrell’s Phriends set, during which she will perform alongside A$AP Rocky, Busta Rhymes, and De La Soul. Last October, M.I.A. questioned why Alex Jones...
