- Ben leaps onto a battleship during war games in 1989, he must navigate a dangerous rescue mission but also contend with his commanding officer, XO Alexander Augustine, otherwise known as Addison's father.
- Ben Leaps into a US naval commander who is faced with an unstable captain posed to start World War III... and Addison's father, who in the original timeline was court martialed for setting off the whole thing. Addison has to watch as her father goes through the entire thing.—Gislef
- Ben appears on the deck of a battleship, and its guns fire. He discovers that he has the nametag "Rossi", and a crewman asks if he's okay. The man leads Ben to the bridge, where the crew spot incoming. The XO tells them to prepare to engage, an a crewman reports that Turret 4 isn't responding. Ben says that he'll handle it and runs to the turret, and it opens fire, destroying the incoming aircraft. When he Ben wonders what war they're in, another crewman tells him one he hopes they never have to fight.
The XO orders all clear, and Ben realizes that it was a drill. The captain comes onto the bridge and says that they did well, but can do better. The XO says that a Chinese sub was following them, but disappeared when they began the drill. The captain gets on the horn and congratulates the crew, He says that the ship will be participating in joint international exercises, and they're near Chinese waters.
Addison calls Ben aside, and tells her that Ziggy hasn't figures out where Ben is now. She tells Ben that he's Commander Rossi, and the captain says that there's no such thing as peace, just pauses between wars. Addison recognizes the words and goes to the bridge, recognizes the XO, and tells Ben that he's on the USS Montana, the captain is Bill Drake, and the XO is her father Alexander Augustine.
At the Project, Jenn meets with Magic and Ian. Ian figures that it's a coincidence that they're on a Leap with Adison's father. Meanwhile, Ben and Addison go out to talk, and Ben realizes the situation seems familiar because Addison has told him about it when they were both in the present. He says that he understand if she want to take the Leap off, but she says that she can't. Addison tells him to walk and she'll tell him why he's there.
Ian informs Magic that Ben Leaped to May 2, 1989. Meanwhile, Addison tells Ben that the Montana picks up a fragment of a distress call and her father decided not to pursue it or tell Drake. It was a mistake. Magic knows the same thing from his time in the Navy, and tells Ian and Jenn that the signal was from the USS Tampa , a sub conducting a top secret mission off the Chinese coast. No one in the fleet knew the Tampa was there, and only the Montana picked up the transmission. The sub crew died and Alexander's reputation was destroyed when the Navy investigated, although no charges were filed. Addison can save her father, but eliminate her own timeline. Ian points out that it would require a major change to alter Addison's timeline, Addison tells Ben that her father is stoic, and no matter what changes, he'll still be the man she knows, and still leave her and her mother. She figures she's there to save the sub crew, and asks Ben to help her do that.
Addison says that the call is coming in, and goes with Ben to the bridge. Drake asks Ben a question about the Montana's height. Addison doesn't know, but Alexander does and gives the answer to Drake. Radar spots the Chinese sub, and Drake tells his men to light the sub up with their fire control radar. Addison warns Ben that doing so is a hostile act, and the Chinese could think they're under attack. Alexander tells Drake the same thing, but Drake says that he's doing it deliberately. Despite there, Alexander figures they shouldn't give the Chinese an excuse to attack them. Drake leaves and Alexander refuses to hear out the Master Chief, snapping at him when the Chief says Drake is getting worse.
The distress signal comes in, and Comms pinpoints the signal. The command staff figure it's a Chinese trap, but Alexander refuses to turn their back on a distress call. He has the Montana head to the distress signal. Drake come onto the bridge and cancels the course change, and asks Alexander what he's thinking. Ben realizes that it wasn't Alexander who ignored the distress call, but Drake.
Drake figures the signal is a lure, and tells Alexander that they're not falling for it. He says that Alexander has a good heart and leaves, and Addison realizes her father wasn't the guilty party. Ben tells Ass that he agrees with him, and Alexander asks him to help him find proof. At the Project, Ian tasks Ziggy with finding the proof. Jenn doesn't find any indication in the reports that it was Drake's decision, and Magic notes that Drake was a legend and Addison sacrificed his career to preserve Drake's reputation out of loyalty for the service. Jenn figures they need to know the complete truth and suggests that Magic reach out to his Chinese counterpart, Liu Wei.
Ziggy comes up with a way to confirm the distress call is friend or foe, and the Project staff feed the information to Ben. He presents it to Alexander, noting the Chinese header of the frequency is slightly different. Ben gets the go-ahead, and he has Comms compare the header. Comms confirm the header is American, and Drake has Alexander plot a course to the signal source.
Alexander talks to Ben privately and thanks him for his idea. They go to the bridge and the Master Chief reports it will be four hours until they get there. Drake fires torpedoes at the sub, and Drake tells the bridge crew that he's not going to let the Chinese sub follow them. Ben warns Drake that he's starting a war, and Drake warns him that if he forgets himself again, he'll be thrown in the brig. He acknowledges Drake's rank and backs down on Addison's advice, and Drake says that he's only giving the Chinese a good scare.
The torpedo explodes well clear of the Chinese sub, the Han, much to Drake's satisfaction. The Han changes depth and Radar loses it. Ben tries to talk to Alexander, who says they'll talk privately.
Magic meets with Wei at a dock where Wei is now working in trade relations. When Magic asks, Wei says that they came close to something bad in in 1989.
Alexander takes Ben to his cabin and Addison goes with them. Ben sees a photo of Addison as a two-year-old, and Alexander says that Addison is perfect. He refuses to hear Ben say anything against Drake, and insists that Drake is a good man. Ben ask him what's really going on, and Alexander says that his father was an alcoholic and beat his family. At 18, Alexander snapped, beat his father, and walked out. Drake took Alexander in and got him into the Naval academy. He says that he'll keep Drake in check and refuses to hear any objections from Ben.
Out in the hallway, Ben asks Addison how she's holding up. She wonders why Alexander was so cold to her when she was growing up. Ziggy tells her via the handlink that the Tampa crew still die. A torpedo hits the side of the Montana, shaking the ship. Ben goes to the bridge, where the radar hasn't confirmed the explosion was caused by a torpedo. Alexander is there and arguing with Drake, figuring the Han isn't responsible because they didn't pick up any torpedo on radar Drake insists that it is. He orders the team to preparing a firing solution, and Alexander tells Ben to review the logs and determine if the torpedo hit them.. Alexander warns that Drake will fire in five minutes if Ben doesn't find something.
Wei tells Magic that a mine sunk the Tampa, and the Chinese leadership laid mines along the coast thinking that the U.S. was sending subs in to run surveillance missions. If a sub was hit by a mine, it would be forced to surface and America would have to acknowledge that they violated Chinese waters. The Chinese military would then tear the American sub apart and steal its technology. Wei says that there was a storm that broke fifty mines free, and they drifted out into the ocean. One of the mines sunk the Tampa. Everyone got lucky that none of the other mines hit the American fleet and started World War III.
Magic calls Jenn and tells her what he's find out, and she tells Addison who tells Ben. He looks for other mines with Addison feeding him information on the density of the mines. Ben has the radar man re-calibrate the radar for low-density mines, and they pick up dozens of nearby contacts. Ben tells Alexander, who calls Drake on the bridge and tells him. Drake tells the radar crew to continue sweeping for the Han, figuring the sub must have released the mine.
Alexander goes to the bridge to stop Drake, while the radar crew pick up the Han and tells Drake, who orders them to fire at will. When Alexander gets to the bridge, he drops anchor and the Montana comes to an abrupt halt. Sonar is taken offline, and they lose their hit on the Han. Drake orders the Master Chief to confine Alexander to quarters, and Alexander is taken away. Addison checks with Ziggy and confirms that if they fire on the Han, they go to war.
At the Project, Jenn warns the returning Magic that they could be facing war. Magic figures the Leaps aren't random and that the project and Ben are changing things for the better.
The Master Chief suggests to Drake that they radio fleet, but Drake refuses to break radio silence. Radar gets a fix on the Tampa, which has reported I's taking on water. Drake radios the fleet to dispatch a rescue copter. Addison tells Ben that, according to Ziggy, the helicopter can only carry ten men and the Montana has to go there. Ben informs Drake, and the latter says they'll go there after they deal with the Han. Addison tells Ben that only Alexander can override the chain of command.
Ben goes to Alexander's quarters and tells him that he has to act. Alexander says that his wife doesn't love him anymore, although he loves her and they both love their daughter. He figures that his wife will endure their marriage and never go, but it's not fair to her. Alexander figures that if he lets his wife go then he won't pass on the darkness that he carries. Ben tells Alexander that he has done everything right, and now he has to protect Drake from himself. Alexander points out that it's mutiny if he forces Drake out, and Ben says that it's the only way to save the lives of everyone on the ship.
Ben distracts Alexander's guard so Alexander can take his gun, but they run into another guard on their way to the bridge and run. The guards take Ben down but Alexander gets away.
Drake is preparing to give the order to fire when Alexander arrives and tells Drake that he can't do it. The Master Chief hesitates to call security, and Alexander tells Drake that he's going to get his men killed. The guards bring Ben in, as Drake tells Alexander that he'd still be white trash if not for him. The Master Chief and then the rest of the crew side with Alexander, and Alexander asks Drake to be the inspiration that he's been to the crew, now. Drake gets control of himself and turns command over to Alexander, and goes to his quarters.
Alexander orders an intercept course for the Tampa, and Addison tells Ben that she can get the mine detonation codes from Ziggy, and Ben has to figure out how to get the signal to the mines. As the Montana approaches the first mine, Ben works out the equations and then had the radio op, Walker, repurpose the transmitter. Walker isn't at his station, and Ben explains that he's going to use the radar transmitter to send the signal and blow up the mines. Walker gets back to his station, and carries out Ben's orders. They lose the radar and then the mines blow up, and the crew cheer.
The next morning, the Montana pick up the Tampa crew and Addison looks at her father. He doesn't hear as she says that the darkness Alexander's father had, stops with Alexander, and he's done nothing but love her and made her the person that she is. Addison says that it's going to be okay, and Alexander looks out the window and says that everything is going to be okay. She hears him and smiles.
Ben is on the deck, and Walker comes up behind him and thanks him for saving them. When he turns, Ben sees Walker's face and realizes that he's Ramirez. Ben points out that Ramirez helped him, and Ram says that Ben helped him. Ram acknowledges that Ben doesn't understand, that why he's going to win, and Leaps.
Ben Leaps a moment later, and appears in the body of a female public defender. His client tells Ben that he has to tell them it wasn't his fault because his girlfriend locked him out of the house. Ben is in a courtroom, and realizes that he's a lawyer.
