It's a scroll shooter where every odd numbered level is a weird platformer. You kinda have a health bar but you can't predict what will hit you and what will 1HKO. On the beginner setting the first levels are fair but then this port from pay to win arcades starts to stack deathtraps and series of insane jumps on you. Not only hits deplete your HP, but the time too, and there is entire level with almost no collectibles to survive. Meanwhile the even numbered levels are all kinda manageable till the end with most bosses being kinda on the easier side.

The game also lags like hell when there is enough stuff on the screen. And no, my 10900k 3080ti are not at fault and other SEGA Mega Drive and Genesis Classics games run fine.

So it's kinda a bad game, as expected. But the SEGA's room emulator on steam saves it. I usually don't think that the rewind functionality is a good addition. There is a difference between manually remembering to quick-save and just going back several seconds, when it's not the core mechanic. But damn it was necessary here.

You play as some kind of a tribal caveman wearing palm-leaves-skirt and using a sword to shoot. You could say that the projectiles are just different kinds of magicks, but i never heard of rockets school of magic, dedicated to the rocket element.

The game showers you with different weapons all the time, and you can't keep the good one. I think they are limited by time and not by ammo. It doesn't really matter that much what you use and you constantly switch anyway. But both orbiters are rather weak, and the spreading rings are quite good.

On the one hand the third game is easier than the fifth. But on the other hand, before ramping up to the insane levels, the fifth game offers some more complex, varied and interesting gameplay. If it didn't go off the rails with difficulty, i would call that a good game. If this game didn't go off the rails with difficulty i would call it just an okay game.

Then I've played the arcade version from Wonder Boy Anniversary Collection on yuzu 1407

Basically it's the same as the Sega Mega Drive version, but even worse. It's a platformer similar to Wonder Boy but with emphasis on shooting, forced scrolling, and ever other level being a scroll shooter with a boss.

The controls suck, the physics suck the kinaesthetics suck. The mechanics of temporary guns suck. They switch all the time, but when you fight the bosses you have none, while the enemies have a ton of HP. The Sega port was five levels shorter, so the original is even longer and much harder even with the rewind.

It's arse.
