  • Manolo and Joaquin both flirt with Maria. She agrees to marry Joaquin so that he will stay and protect her city.

Violence & Gore

  • Manolo engages in a bullfight. The bull charges at him, but Manolo cunningly evades the bull. Then he prepares to kill the bull with a sword, only to realize that it would be wrong to kill the bull. Outraged by his refusal to finish the bull, the audience jeers at and throws objects at Manolo. One person throws a guitar that knocks Manolo unconscious.
  • Various bullfights result in the deaths of several members of Manolo's family.
  • A gang of thieves attack a city, and the protagonists fight back.

  • When Xibalba summons the spirit of every bull killed by a Sanchez and they combine into one, the Candle Maker says "that's a lot of bull."
  • None, this is a profanity-free movie. However there are some minor insults. The word "sexy" is used once.

  • People are seen honoring deceased relatives during Day of the Dead, including Manolo's mother, though it is never specified how she died.
  • The theme of the movie and related images (particularly the barren Land of the Forgotten) may be too intense for very young children.
  • To settle a wager, Manolo must escape a maze with giant round boulders rolling toward him.
  • Due to his gigantic size and fury, Chakal may frighten or seem unsettling to young viewers.

Spoilers

The Parents Guide items below may give away important plot points.

Violence & Gore

  • Maria gets bitten by a snake. Moments later, Manolo allows himself to be similarly bitten and dies. He was tricked into believing that she also died, but she was still alive.
  • Chakal kills Carlos off-screen. His death is implied by one of the Candle Maker's candles burning out.
  • To save the town from Chakal, Manolo has to break down a column holding a large bell which he uses to trap Chakal and prevent the bombs and dynamites from blowing up the town. Manolo also has to let himself get trapped in bell, therefore needing to sacrifice himself. With the bell trapping both Manolo and Chakel, the explosion only occurs inside the bell. It literally kills Chakal and seemingly Manolo. Maria and the townsfolk mourn him. This moment may sadden young viewers as well. Manolo emerges out of the bells and it is revealed that Joaquin has managed to place the metal of eternal life on him to ensure his survival.

Frightening & Intense Scenes
