ReviewThis Malayalam film streaming on SonyLiv has a crowded cast, but the seamless screenplay, strong direction, smooth editing, and intelligent shot selection ensure that you understand each character.Screengrab / 1001 NunakalThe most popular maxim when it comes to marriage in India has to be the one about uttering even a thousand lies to make a wedding happen. Honesty, then, isn’t a virtue that’s traditionally recommended in the institution of marriage. Directed by Thamar Kv who co-wrote the film with Hashim Sulaiman, 1001 Nunakal is about the nature of truth and lies. Though we may automatically say that we prefer the former, can we really handle it? Perhaps Jack Nicholson in A Few Good Men (1992) was onto something when he famously yelled, “You can’t handle the truth!” 1001 Nunakal is set in Dubai where the close-knit Nri Malayali community depends on each other in times of crises. An apartment fire triggers...

CinemaWhile the viewers in question praised the male lead, Anand Deverakonda, the female protagonist portrayed by Vaishnavi Chaitanya was at the receiving end of hate-filled harassment. When the Telugu film Baby was released on Friday, July 14, videos of some men unhesitantly yelling expletives at Vaishnavi (the female lead of the movie played by Vaishnavi Chaitanya) at the theatre, emerged. It is no surprise that mainstream Telugu cinema has not had the best roles for women but such explicit disdain for a female character who chose to broaden her horizons beyond her high school relationships is shocking. In the movie, the woman protagonist gets close to a man who was not her high school sweetheart Anand (played by Anand Deverakonda). What is even more appalling are the fan reactions to the movie. Without mincing words, many were happy to launch a tirade of attacks on women and their ‘fickle’ nature when...

Internationally sourced programming and stories placed alongside local content could be a solution to bring audiences back to Indian cinemas, a high-powered panel debated.
The panel was part of Indiantelevision.com’s annual industry event, The Content Hub, that recently concluded in Mumbai. Mayank Shroff, head of film distribution at Cinepolis, the Indian division of Latin American exhibition giant Cinepolis, said that while footfalls were back to 85% of pre-pandemic days, an innovative approach is required to bring the rest of the audiences back.
Shroff pointed to the success of Makoto Shinkai’s anime film “Suzume,” which accounted for 20% of the Cinepolis box office over the past weekend and “Evil Dead Rise,” which also pulled in decent numbers, both in the face of stiff competition from Eid holiday release “Kisi Ka Bhai Kisi Ki Jaan,” starring superstar Salman Khan. Tamil cinemaFilms have always confused love with many things like stalking, envy, saviourship, and so on. Here are five Tamil films that did not get romance right in 2022.Oshin AHow did Tamil cinema portray love on screen in 2022? Quite poorly, one could say. Of course, there were a countable number of films that beautifully showcased the essence of romantic relationships, but most of them staggered with the theme.Year after year, we see how a major chunk of the Tamil film industry has been mishandling the concept of romance. From the glorification of stalking to the "soup" song culture, the representation of romance and romantic relationships have been a slippery slope. Here is a list of Tamil films from 2022 that confused romance with several other things: Love Today This film had to be the first on the list because it was loved and appreciated by many for all the wrong reasons.

OpinionIf ‘Love Today’ simply wanted to be a logic-defying entertainer, critics may have overlooked its problematic approach towards gender and caste. But the film seeks to ask questions, and often arrives at the wrong answers.Saradha UTwitter/ Ags Entertainment*Spoilers ahead* The music in the recently released Tamil romantic drama Love Today is unexpectedly telling of its sexist undertones. No, it is not the groovy ‘Pachai Elai’ set to tune by Yuvan Shankar Raja, but the background music playing out in correspondence to the quarrels between the film’s protagonists Uthaman Pradeep (played by Pradeep Ranganathan who also directed the film) and his girlfriend Nikitha (Ivana). A group of leading Indian filmmakers and producers discussed strategies for bringing local audiences back into cinemas following the huge rise in Ott consumption in India, at a panel at the International Film Festival of India (Iffi) in Goa.
“The platforms existed before the pandemic and people flirted with them, but when the pandemic happened they took Ott home and started consuming content across different languages and genres,” said Vivek Krishnani, CEO of IN10 Media Network and former Sony India head. “When cinemas opened again, people were shy to return, but the choice of content that drives them to cinemas can’t be same.”
Director-producer Ramesh Sippy, whose credits include iconic Indian films such as Sholay, said this was an issue even before the rise of streaming: “There was a time when you only had to announce a film and people would rush to the cinema without knowing exactly what they were going to see.
