With Sharknado 5 making a splash on TV screens across the globe these past few weeks, what better time to visit the world of The Asylum? With a myriad of films under their belt, from their beginnings as king of the mockbuster to their foray into original film making, it’s no secret we’re big fans of these bastions of the direct to DVD market and have reviewed a Lot of their output! With that in mind, here’s my pick of the Top 5 (because it’s Sharknado Five… geddit?!?) movies from The Asylum in – shock, horror – order of preference…

If you've been watching the rather superb marketing for Suicide Squad and wondered what it would be like if you stripped away the star power, ditched the talented director, and tweaked just enough to avoid legal repercussions, look no further! The Asylum, the studio responsible for such "mockbusters" as Transmorphers, The Da Vinci Treasure, and Abraham Lincoln Vs. Zombies, is back... Read More...

Stars: Karrueche Tran, Jason Simmons, Rob Van Dam, Danny Trejo, Jena Sims, Brad Mills, Scott Thomas Reynolds | Written by Jacob Cooney, Bill Hanstock | Directed by Christopher Olen Ray
It seems oh-so-obvious, but would you believe me if I told you that 3-Headed Shark Attack is a sequel to the 2012 film 2-Headed Shark Attack? Well it is. And both films come from Christopher Olen Ray, son of legendary (well at least in my house) B-movie director Fred Olen Ray, and director of the fantastic, and criminally over-looked, action flick Mercenaries. Ray is also one of the best director that purveyors of Syfy channel shlock, The Asylum, currently have on their roster.
Of course your enjoyment of this film depends entirely on whether or not you’re a fan of the un-ironically bad films that The Asylum – and the Syfy channel – have made their stock and trade. For me their films are...

In this round-up, we have an excerpt from Scott Shoyer's zombie novel Outbreak: The Mutation. Also: a Q&A with Simon Green, the writer of Judas Ghost, Seraphim Song release details, the short film Samhain, and the third trailer for At Granny's House.
Outbreak: The Mutation: Press Release: "Austin, Texas – While nobody will deny zombie fiction’s huge surge in popularity, both readers and critics alike are currently crying out for wholly unique, mould-breaking narratives that don’t succumb to the recycling of the same old ideas. Thankfully, Scott Shoyer has stepped up to the plate with gusto.
Volume One of Shoyer’s Outbreak trilogy has already injected literally new blood into the market. In The Hunger, readers were captivated as a seemingly innocent day at the zoo led to a violent and world-threatening zombie apocalypse. Vagabond Entertainment have released a brand new theatrical trailer for director Les Mahoney (Available) new horror thriller, At Granny`s House, which stars Rachel Alig (Bikini Spring Break), Glenda Morgan Brown (The West Wing), Mahoney (Coldwood) and indie horror favorite Bill Oberst Jr. (Abraham Lincoln vs. Zombies). The film follows a loving caregiver whose dark secret makes Granny’s house a macabre place of death – and love.
Shot entirely in a rural town in Colorado, At Granny’s House is a dark Hitchcockian thriller that will make audiences wonder what is going on, behind closed doors in small-town America. There’s is currently a Kickstarter campaign or the film to get the movie as wide an exposure as possible – including two premieres and a week-long screening of the film in L.A. Plus, as the campaign page states, “a focused and intensive marketing campaign to take advantage of the film...

Every holiday deserves their share of horror films made for it, and President’s Day is no exception. The weird thing is that with all the President’s the United States has had over the past 239 years, only one of them seems to be important enough to be the center of a genre movie. Abraham Lincoln is hands down the most popular Chief who needs hailing. Look no further than the following gems to celebrate your Monday off from work or school with these blood-soaked classics.
Let’s start with the most obvious. 2010’s indie slasher film President’s Day couldn’t be more perfect to mark the occasion. It revolves around the student council elections at Lincoln High. They turn into a matter of life and death when someone dressed as Abraham Lincoln starts hacking up the candidates. Made on a shoestring budget of $5,000, it doesn’t get any more grassroots gory than this.

After seeing the trailer for Warm Bodies (2013), I made a mental note to steer clear of it in movie theaters. Zombies-- although they have had their popularity throughout horror history-- have become significantly trendy within the horror community for the past decade with movies such as 28 Weeks Later (2007), Zombieland (2009), and Abraham Lincoln vs. Zombies (2012). By the time the third season of The Walking Dead aired in 2012, it was clear that the end of the current zombie craze could be upon us. I suspected that Warm Bodies would be the last nail in the coffin of what started out as a delightfully gory ride.
I’m not entirely sure why I expected Warm Bodies to be such a failure. Perhaps I feared that it would be another teen romance movie with just a dash of horror elements. Or maybe I thought the leading lady, Teresa Palmer,...

Prepare yourselves people. The Asylum is coming to TV on a regular basis. Oh yes, the guys that have brought us cheap rip offs of everything from Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter (Abraham Lincoln vs. Zombies) to Snakes on a Plane (Snakes on a Train) and the ridiculous Sharknado, have signed a deal with Syfy to produce 13 episodes of a action-horror zombie series titled Z Nation.
True, once in a while The Asylum manages to eek out something which is curiously entertaining (I didn't watch all of Sharknado but I laughed at quite a bit of what I saw) but for the most part, the quality of their work is sub-par and only mildly entertaining. Every horror fan has their own idea of what’s authentically frightening, but for me personally, successful horror goes straight for the kill by getting to the root of what scares us on a primal, inherently human level. It touches nerves and stirs fears that live deep inside all of us. We’re unsettled, disturbed, and maybe even provoked as a result. Children of Sorrow is the type of film that successfully does all this and more by drawing us into the lives of some truly fascinating characters.
The film introduces us to cult leader Simon Leach (Bill Oberst Jr.) and a group of desperate teens he has assembled together in a Mexico desert compound to help him realize his personal vision of faith and spiritual growth. The latest member of the group is Ellen (Hannah Levien), a young woman searching for her sister who...

Yes, you read that right! The king of B-movies, Bill Oberst, Jr., is going to be the star of a new college lecture series designed to help audience members enhance their own lives and careers. And we can almost guarantee there will be no blood shed onstage.
Oberst is a phenomenal and prolific actor that absolutely took the horror world by storm after he launched into the limelight with his appearance in the Emmy Award winning film Take This Lollipop. Since then he's gone on to star in scores of films and amass a wealth of knowledge on how to succeed in an uber-competitive world. Oberst feels like the lessons he's learned during his acting career can easily translate and be used by people no matter what line of work they're in.
The event will be held in Missouri in the Baldwin Hall Auditorium on the Truman University campus, March 18 at 7p.

Sharknado. A simple “portmanteau” – two words combined together to make one. The two words in this case were most likely “shark” and “tornado,” which make-up two of mother nature’s deadliest weapons in her arsenal of terrors, thrown together to spawn an idea for an incredibly creative original film. A film that could only be produced by The Asylum, of course. If you’re not familiar with the The Asylum, they’re the studio behind some of the most of the popular low-budget creature-features of recent times: 2-Headed Shark Attack, Mega Shark vs. Gatoroid and Mega Shark vs. Giant Octopus… you’re beginning to see a pattern emerge, right?
But The Asylum doesn’t exclusively make movies using the formula “shark plus other thing equals arggggh!” Like any other studio, The Asylum has to make movies with mainstream appeal to finance their artsy, more personal films like Sharknado. And that...

Romero, and many - Many - more. Who knows? You may even find some new movies you should check out or at least revisit.
Let the scares begin!

Water Tree Media have released the first clip from the much anticipated (at least by me and fans of the awesome Bill Oberst) teen slasher film Ditch Day Massacre, which stars horror icon Bill Oberst Jr. (Children of Sorrow, Scary or Die, Abraham Lincoln vs. Zombies) and Lynn Lowry (Cat People, The Crazies).
The film also stars ambitious up and coming talents Katy Foley (Disdain), Zach Silverman (A Broken Code), Tara Gerard (Lake Dead), Mad Brad Potts (Puppet Master X, “Glee”) and martial arts star Morgan Benoit (The Forbidden Kingdom) and is helmed by first time director Joe Hendrick, who has collaborated with horror screenwriter/author Daniel P. Coughlin (Lake Dead, Farmhouse) and sibling actor/writer Ryan Coughlin (Back Slash, “Jericho”); in a film which tells the story of:
Jenny Bilson, a high school senior, [who[ is the perfect student, and a wonderful daughter to a veteran police detective. But a figure from her past has come knocking. And, throwing a high school ‘ditch party,’ will end up being one Hell of a mistake!
Be Warned: Much of the film’s story is revealed in this short reel. The...
