Could be better
yann-9450119 November 2023
First of all, for foreigners, know that the actions in the series are actually quite common in the lives of Brazilians. Our country is huge and crime prevails. A few years ago this new modality emerged in which on a "random" day criminals, drug dealers, corrupt police officers and heavily armed mercenaries invade a city and completely dominate it. There is no chance of resistance, civilians are tied to vehicles, police officers are executed, the entire city is closed. I say this because, looking from the outside, it may seem like a fantasy, but the reality is much worse than what is shown in the series.

Fast paced action series
me_and_youoo417 November 2023
I sincerely cannot understand the bad reviews of this series.

While it isn't the best series I've seen, it's definitely not the worst. I find it very fast paced, with a different plot than other gang movies/series and very nice to watch.

It's what one would expect form a Jason Statham movie - maybe with more credible happenings. Both the police and the villains have great ideas and aces up their sleeves.

The acting is okay, the effects also. Just give it a try if you're looking for this kind of series/movies. Now I need to start looking for similar titles. Hopefully I find something as good at this :)

Good action series
tryontryok15 November 2023
The series is set in a region on the border between Paraguay and Brazil, an area with a high crime rate. Although not explicitly advertised as based on a true story, the core theme of bank heists involving professionals with high-caliber weapons is a reality in Brazil, as seen in the recent case in the city of Criciúma. With a good cast from the main part, it serves as an action series and provides a glimpse into the complex situations at the borders of Latin America.

The actors in the main group are good, and the use of individuals who actually live within the favelas for the secondary characters despite a mediocre performance, is immersed in a familiar environment amid funk parties and the slang used.

I hope there will be a second season
searchanddestroy-13 January 2024
If not, I mean, if there is not a second season - which I am not sure of - so then this series is totally smashed by a cheesy ending, an ending destined to sissies, squeamish under and over fifties housewives...Why such an ending, UNLESS of course if a second season is already "in the pipes" as we say in France, in preparation, or even writing. For the rest, this plot is absolutely my stuff, high scale, XXL armed robbers - not grocery nor gas stations robbers - heavily armed, acting like special forces commandos, and in front of them hard boiled cops whose technicalities in terms of investigation are very well explained, with details galore.... And as you can guess, HEAT is also obviously a material which this series is inspired from, besides also actual events.

It is just okay
retababyagyare15 November 2023
It's just okay. Nothing exceptional.

You will get bored at a point but if you determined you will finish, lol Picks up and drops off and picks up again, It's about gangs undertaking robberies, freeing people from prison, those stuff

It's an over and over again rollercoaster. Never ending

The acting, just normal. Nothing exceptional. Normal acting. It's simply an okay series.

At this point, I actually don't know what to type again, cuz there is not much to say with regards to this lol. Just want to finish the words limit,

Don't expect sooo much to be wowed or anything. Just something calm to watch.

A series I watched on binge and enjoyed
keller-2065220 November 2023
Shooting a movie in Brazil in troubled neighborhoods is not an easy task, and the production did it big time. In certain sections and the street shots, it looks like a docu-film. The careful and invested production, including the chases, do not fall for any American film. The acting of all the actors is natural and reliable. The plot is fascinating, and I had a hard time understanding in which criticism here there are points of boredom? I watched all 8 episodes on binge and couldn't stop watching. Definitely a good Netflix police action series, and the low overall score as well as for excellent French/ European movies or series is due to ignorance and prejudice.

Not much to see here
pawelapenczek11 December 2023
Not much to see here, so unless one has eight hours to kill, it's better to move on. The series has all proper ingredients for chaos and robbers show, but sadly they do not add to much, and certainly nothing original. In a good side, it occasionally grabs attention, on a bad side it also drags from time to time and I found myself skipping scenes that would be more in place in Brazilian soap opera. Potential viewer should be also warned it is the first season so some plot lines are left open.

For a viewer from northern hemisphere who never visited South America locations were on exotic side and quite interesting. I wish they added Iguazu Falls to the mix but sadly not and now I'm afraid I'll havevto travel there to see them. As a depiction of life in this part of the world the show is severely lacking. As often with thrillers of this kind (even Scandinavian) everybody shown is either a cop or a criminal. After few hours of watching I was yearning to see some normal people, you know, those that get up at 7am go to work and then shopping in the afternoon. I cannot believe that the only career choice young people in Brazil have is to become a bank robber. As things stand, we don't even see people walking in streets. As a result, there is a depressing feeling of being in an artificial nowhere land and one is left to wonder where the electricity in Brazil is coming from. Is it imported since nobody works? Finally, it is rather surprising that DNA analysis in criminal investigations is a novelty in Brazil in 2020s. We hear about it as nauseam as though it was invented just few years ago while in fact DNA profiling was introduced in 1980s. I don't know what to make out of this.

Wow! I will never ignore foreign series again
msangis219 November 2023
This will be my first time ever to write a review on here (probably 3rd i am writing since subscribing in 2018) just because of this series and I have not even finished it (on episode 6 now) but I got to say I would have missed on an absolute gem had I ignored it when I saw it popping on Netflix just because it's foreign. This is one of the best series I have EVER seen. Wow!

Very well crafted. Good actors and actresses. Didn't know Brazilians can act this well. Believe me guys, this is a beautiful gem.

The first half of the series is great, the second is weaker.
schiavon-8984022 April 2024
Very well produced series, very professional, good performances and, for the most part, well directed. Exceptional, by Brazilian standards.

I'm giving it 7 but I divided the analysis between the first half and the second, which have, in my opinion, different grades.

The first half of the series (ep-1 to 4) is excellent, except for Benício's excess flashbacks with his dead partner. The first flashback already conveyed the information, the second became tiring and from the third onwards, unbearable. In this case it is better to use a symbol that adds to the feeling of the moment and use it, instead of saturating the series with these flashbacks. The cliché of every police officer not being able to have a normal personal or family life is also disturbing, which is also tiring, especially in the Federal Police of Brazil, where they earn absurdly well and have many perks. I know two federal police officers who have great financial and family lives. The cliché family problems do nothing to advance the plot and the police are treated in a very cliché way. I even skipped some familiar scenes and repetitive flashbacks.

But from episode 5 onwards, things take a turn for the worse. At the beginning of this episode, the bandit "Sem Alma", who was being obsessively pursued by Benício, runs away into the woods, injured, and the police, who are numbered 4, don't go after him just because he threw a grenade and made smoke and noise, no injuries were reported. Completely inconsistent with the behavior of the police, especially Benicio, who after his friend's death, lived just to catch this criminal. But I understand in terms of the structure of the script that it required him to escape, but the way the scene was written and performed was too simplistic. Episode 5 is drawn out and tiring. The fight in the nightclub is confusing due to the editing (and perhaps the direction, it's difficult to know), with very quick cuts and the stroboscopic effect preventing anything from being seen, it was impossible to know who was hitting who.

The character of Cordeiro, with his parallel subplot, was also forced and, for me, it didn't work. And the fact that he, in a very short time, rose, undercover, to a trusted man of one of the bosses of a powerful criminal organization, was also too forced. Apart from the fact that the police officer was suspended and freely carried out the investigation at the behest of a Federal Police chief, the reason for which was never fully explained. Probably to return in the second season or, more likely, to paste the first half with the second, which seems to have been written in a hurry to stretch the first 4 episodes to 8. His private drama of having to kill a police officer to prove his loyalty to a criminal organization also served no purpose in the main plot.

The attempt to humanize the character of "Sem Alma" did not integrate well with the character, for me. His inner "conflict" between religion and crime was not well integrated, it was a bit played out and forced, more like a forced characteristic to give dimension to the character, only to give him a chance at redemption in the end, when he frees a hostage.

The Federal Police Officer who becomes corrupted in a 1-minute conversation with a criminal was also too forced.

Then comes the final episode, extremely anticlimactic in relation to the conclusion of the story, pushing the envelope again, this time for a possible second season.

The way in which the Federal Police arranged the transport of the main Paraguayan crime boss, within Paraguay, was absurd in every aspect. Firstly, in the case of any extradition of criminals between countries, the local police would escort the prisoner to the airport, where, at least, a Paraguayan police officer would accompany him to Brazil, they would not leave everything in the hands of the police from another country, especially when it comes to of a powerful crime boss, the Ambassador. But if the federal police knew that there was an internal informant and an army of criminals to free him, the mission was suicidal and very poorly planned.

Then, in the shooting against the convoy, from the beginning, we do not see the target of the attack, the Ambassador. It seems that all the police left the boss in the car, leaving him, apparently, with a police officer. It's difficult to know who got him because later a man in a mask runs away with him, and even so, the Ambassador doesn't appear in the scene. I saw the scene 3 times and didn't understand where he was and who rescued him. The Ambassador's protection was the convoy's main mission and he could even have been used as a hostage and shield, since the function of the attack was his rescue.

The pursuit of "Sem Alma" ends this anticlimax of the episode and the series. Benício was obsessed with the criminal, who, in addition to his friend, had coldly killed two other police officers. Then, he just arrests the criminal and even has a friendly conversation with him in the car, completely inconsistent with the rest of his behavior throughout the series. It seems that writers and directors became fond of the criminal and kept him alive out of affection, perhaps for a second season, compromising the end of the series and the coherence of Benicio's obsessive behavior.

There are countless other points in the script to highlight, simplistic or forced solutions, but I have already written too much. But the impression that remains is that they compromised a large part of the final episode just to give the opportunity for a second season.

I give 10 to the production and effects, especially the use of cell phones, well placed, and the use of weapons and shooting. The use of drones also greatly enhanced some scenes. Most of the main actors are very good. The photography and camera were also very efficient. Some scenes were very well directed.

However, according to my criteria, a personal matter, the script always has greater weight.

Overall, with greater weight given to the script, I give it 9 for the first 4 episodes and 5 for the other 4. Average 7.

If the series had had better script solutions in the second half and a more exciting and satisfying ending, it could have even reached 9 or 10. I don't know if the second half and the ending were harmed by the need for a second season or because they had to be extended the first 4 episodes to 8.

I'm not overrating it. The end is the bad part.
igorbortoli19 November 2023
First of all, this is clearly an example of the few good available series made by Netflix. Recently there has been a lot of work put into filling the catalog with a bunch of nonsense but CRIME DNA is certainly not one of those. The film and all its aspects are solid. It is well built and has everything you should expect while searching for this type of entertainment, from an awesome soundtrack to the amazing car chases and clashes. The thing I have is with the end. It probably couldn't have been changed because this series is based in facts. It's connected to the story plot but seems small to what they could have done. Perhaps it should have a link with the past as it did but it could have led to a bigger problem to be solved.

really good series
arkady20051 December 2023
The acting is very good, so is the writing. I didn't have any problems following the story, quite the opposite, I actually enjoyed it because it's credible, kept me engaged and always wondering what will happen next.

It's easy to follow because when changing locations, most of the starting scenes contain a textual description of where the next thing is taking place. Of course, you need to know just a bit of geography to make sense of it, as these are locations in South America.

Indeed, the major plot was a bit predictable at some point (that's why I took 1 star), however the way it unfolded was a very nice surprise (that's why I left all the other 9 stars).

The actors are very well chosen as well.

I hope they'll do a season 2. This is actually very good stuff and I hope more series like this will follow.

Chaotic storytelling
JohnM6326 November 2023
While the actual events on which this series is based may have been complex, there's no reason for chaotic storytelling.

The story seems to have no clear direction while it develops through repeated and illogical flashbacks, pointless scenes that add nothing, and various plotholes and bad decisions.

After for episodes I gave up disappointed. The few action scenes are ok, cinematography is ok, acting not to bad, but all in all it remains a chaotic soup of events. For sure it will be entertaining enough for some, I just expected more.

Whether the story is simply about a police officer seeking retribution, or about the introduction of DNA in the Brazilian forensic mix, or maybe about both, ... the result is a mess due to poor decisions (or lack thereof) in the scenario.

Overall, it was a great show, though some of the dialogue between the actors felt cartoonish
rxbandits8424 March 2024
I really liked the show. My family works in the Federal Police in Brazil, and from what I've seen, 99% of the work involves paperwork and dealing with verbal abuse from a "delegado".

But, of course, the show is fiction, and it's done well. I had a blast watching it, especially because it didn't have the same old actors you see in every Brazilian show (the lame Globo Actors). The show has everything you want from a crime show. Worth watching!

My only problem was with the dialogue. Some lines and curse words felt too fake, like something out of a comedy sketch from Hermes & Renato. This is a common issue in Brazilian movies and series; the dialogue doesn't feel real enough, which is important for a show like this.

One of the better Netflix series in recent years
rickfoj26 November 2023
Entertaining action, solid acting, an interesting plot, which evolved until the last episode, likeable characters and good writing makes this a good choice. The writers use a lot of typical plot devices like the untameable cop, the new buddy, the revenge plot, the unlikeable new boss etc, but it is interesting how they break them and make them believable and human. While other productions seem to go either in the direction of tougher and tougher or all start out with heaps of problems and it goes down from there, here they choose a convincing middle ground.

I don't speak Portuguese, but watched it with the original voices + subtitles anyway. Highly recommended.

Criminal Code
Tweekums14 December 2023
This eight part Brazilian series is set in the city of Foz do Iguaçu, just across the border from the Paraguayan city of Ciudad del Este. Our protagonists are Benício, a police officer who lost his former partner during a prison break and new partner Suellen. A major robbery takes place over the border and suspicion falls on 'The Organisation'; a criminal band thought to be behind the prison break. These are very violent criminals; they storm into cities, heavily armed, and dominate the streets till the job is done and they vanish into the countryside. DNA may help identify culprits and link crimes but catching them still won't be easy.

I thought this was a really exciting series. There is plenty of action throughout and a real sense of danger, even for major characters. The action is impressively varied with exciting shootouts, car chases and even some waterborne action. It is quite violent at times; these criminals aren't soft on those who cross them. The characters are great; we follow both police and certain criminals, seeing events from both sides without glorifying the criminals. Certain aspects of the story are wrapped up after the eighth episode but other details are set up for further seasons; I hope it does well enough to get more. The cast does a fine job bringing their characters to life. Overall I'd certainly recommend this to fans of action packed drama.

These comments are based on watching the series in Portuguese with English subtitles.

Riveting and complex cop show
mrfrane13 December 2023
I don't know the first thing about Brazil or Paraguay or the complexities of the region between the two countries, so I won't pretend to define this show as "authentic." But I was hooked from the beginning and all the way through the entire series because the characters were beautifully drawn and superbly acted and the complexity of the story was fascinating.

My only real confusion is what communication is like on the border of the two countries. It's a Brazilian production and naturally focused on that country and its language but Paraguay (I thought) is Spanish-speaking and Brazilians (I thought) spoke a version of Portuguese. I know a teeny bit of Spanish and Portuguese may as well be Greek to me. Yet there never seems to be any question of how the police forces of the two countries communicate. Is everyone in the region fluent in both, so that it's not an issue? I can only reference Nordic police shows when communicating with Finnish police requires anyone from a Scandinavian country to fall back on English (of all things) as a Lingua Franca. I may just be American Ignorant here but I wouldn't mind a little help.

I would definitely watch more stories with these characters and this production company. I do hope there is more in the pipeline and that I don't miss it if/when it appears.

Absolutely superb
adkosyd4 March 2024
Such a great series with wonderful actors, sharp script, tight editing, music, captivating plot and overall a thrilling watch!

I also noticed such great continuity in editing and not once do they strech the story... Keeps you on the edge of your seat.

It also showcase the beauty of the region with some wonderful camera work and drone shots. Action sequence is better than Hollywood masala.

Started to fall inlove with the characters and I do hope they have a season 2 in the making... Because I know it will continue the series into another wonderful watch.

Kudos to the entire production team.

There is no logic storytelling in this at all
pollpixx28 November 2023
It started off well with the first episode. But than it got from bad to worse. Eventhough I love these kind of shows, this one soon didn't make any sense anymore. I will not spoil a thing but there are lots of moments which is just plain unrealistic.

The main actor does the same trick over and over again. This could have been a good show as the story had great potential.

Unfortunately the writers didn't seem to follow any kind of logic in the storyline which made you watch 3 or 4 different locations in 2 minutes. At some point you have no clue on which side of the border you are.

So sorry, I won't give it more than 2 stars.

One of the best crime series I've ever seen!
jubsyun13 December 2023
As a Brazilian, I grow up with the stigma that very few things produced on Brazil were actually good. Maybe, around the 2000's, it was true, but nowadays, Brazilian productions are so good they might compete with other international production. The characters are deep, the story is magnetic and the overall production is similar to the experience of watching a movie. If there's a flaw to me, is the fact that somethings are over explained, but maybe, it's because I'm already too familiar with those topics lol. Overall, I highly recommend this show to everybody that wants a show full of action, a simple - but well executed - plot and enough touch of violence.

Annoying - Unfortunately, the whole thing loses itself in too many ambitions
Streaming-Kati12 January 2024
My expectations were high at the beginning because the trailer looked promising. You quickly get the impression of an action-packed crime series from the classic school. But then "Code of Crime" bogs down in its grand ambitions. We have a large-scale network of criminals and the police stations of Brazil and Paraguay fight for jurisdiction. The series is packed with testosterone from South Americans. The police chief gives you the feeling that he would love to be the head of the FBI. For all the "wing-flapping", however, very little happens at first and various successes also seem rather coincidental. Benício, who is put on the case with his partner Suellen, also has his own goals first and foremost and retribution is more important to him than the case. In turn, her job is more important to her than anything else, and even her "newly" born daughter has to take a back seat.

All in all, I unfortunately didn't warm to the characters and their further development didn't convince me either. The story develops slowly, it is also about the introduction of DNA in the Brazilian investigation and there is observation and observation... then of course everything is discussed at headquarters.

In between, the narrative jumps back and forth between the police officer's past and the criminals, as well as between Brazil and Paraguay. Even though the actual events may be complex and the scope on which the fictional series is based is considerable, it doesn't succeed without chaos in the storytelling and it doesn't get really interesting. The story and the characters do not leave a lasting impression. The acting remains solid. The camera work and the score/sound are okay. The few action scenes aren't bad either, but they can't save the irrelevant chaos. The arc of suspense gets lost in all the back and forth and the whole thing unfortunately becomes irrelevant as a result, even if the series does pick up a bit from the 4th episode onwards.
