Back in 2012, I covered a low-key horror festival in New York City that programmed a short titled Foxes. I can’t tell you what feature it played before, mainly because the slate of shorts Foxes was part of outshined the feature presentation without contest. Why am I telling you this? Because Foxes was Lorcan Finnegan’s first cinematic effort, and as my first assumption of his talents surmised, Without Name captures all the psychological tension that Finnegan once showcased in a tighter format. It’s a bit of hallucinogenic woodland mayhem – somewhere along the lines of a diet The Hallow – representing a solid feature debut for Mr. Finnegan, even if a little more depth is desired.

Irish directors John O.Hagan and Lorcan Finnegan have joined Sydney production company Filmgraphics.

Both directors hail from Dublin and have made spots for clients such as Mercedes, Coca-Cola, Microsoft, Budweiser, Heineken, Renault and Lucozade.

Finnegan has worked for production company Zeppotron as a motion designer, editor and later as a director. Zeppotron, a part of Endemol, was co-founded by Charlie Brooker, of Black Mirror fame.

Finnegan's latest short, Foxes, premiered at SXSW and won an Ifta for Best Short Film, as well as screening at Tribeca..

He has finished post on his first feature film Without Name (a title that's sure to create word-of-mouth problems) and is currently working on sci-fi feature Vivarium with Film4 and the Ifb.

Winning projects announced for the Irish Film Board low budget dilmmaking scheme, Catalyst Project.

The Irish Film Board has revealed the final three teams of the competitive Catalyst Project initiative, selected from more than 88 applications bidding to win the opportunity to produce a fully funded feature film.

Ifb will now provide each filmmaking team with funding to produce a low-budget feature film, with access to industry experts who will offer mentorship and guidance along the way.

The successful projects are:

Kissing Candice written and to be directed by Aoife McArdle and to be produced by Andrew Freedman;

The Drummer and The Goalkeeper written and to be directed by Nick Kelly and to be produced by Kate McColgan;

Without Name written by Garret Shanley, to be directed by Lorcan Finnegan and to be produced by Brunella Cocchiglia.

After playing the festival circuit over the last couple of years, including making its world premiere at SXSW in 2012, Foxes is now available to watch in its entirety for free:

On the 3rd and 4th of May the Empire cinema in Leicester Square will play host to the British Independent Film Festival and the Film Festival Guild have today announced the list of nominations for their annual awards.

With a keen understanding of the often London-centric nature of celebrations of UK Independent film both the feature films and the series of shorts are playing in eleven cinemas across the country over the month of May. This is a welcome state of affairs, one which the London Film Festival embraced last year with a similar nationwide programme, and it should enable the films and the filmmakers to reach a far wider audience.

The Bradford International Film Festival is typically an underground-friendly fest. This year appears to be no exception with two very special experimental film retrospectives, as well as a few modern underground-type flicks.

The 19th annual Biff will roll on April 11-21 at several locations around Bradford and Leeds in England, including the National Media Museum, Hebden Bridge Picture House, Hyde Park Picture House and other venues.

Biff is hosting a tribute to Stan Brakhage this year by screening the prolific filmmaker’s magnum opus, Dog Star Man, as well as a selection of his short films, from 1963′s legendary Mothlight to 1994′s Black Ice. There’s also going to be an epic-sized tribute/retrospective of experimental films from Austria, a country with a proud avant-garde filmmaking tradition that’s typically overlooked.

  The official screening schedule has been locked down by the CineMayhem Film Festival, a new event founded by Dread Central's Heather Wixson to kick off the site's third annual Indie Horror Month. Have no worries, because the quality was still on kick-ass display, showcasing some bright up and coming horror talent. There’s really no point in wasting time writing an introduction though, let’s just jump to the films!

Rotting Hill

Ah, love in the time of zombies. Always a romantic and, er, gory tale of spellbound hearts and spending an eternity together with “the one.” Rotting Hill is a cute little love story, and yes I just said cute, about two undead lovers munching their way through the apocalypse. There’s some really cool effects on display and a few good kills, even though I’m not sure why zombies are killing other zombies (hate crime?), but hell, it’s a fun little romp none the less.

Irish short animation, 'Fear of Flying', has completed production in preparation for its premiere at the Galway Film Fleadh this July. Shot at Dublin-based South Studios, 'Fear of Flying' was funded by the Irish Film Board's Frameworks project, with RTÉ and the Arts Council. Conor Finnegan wrote and directed the short, while Ifta Award-winning producer Brunella Cocchiglia (Foxes) produced for Lovely Productions, flanked by cinematographer Ivan McCullough (The Eclipse). Mark Doherty (A Film with Me in it) voiced main character Dougal, while breakout actress of 'Behold the Lamb' Aoife Duffin co-starred...

In Lorcan Finnegan's latest short film Foxes, the Irish filmmaker plays with the audience's perceptions as we follow a young couple (Marie Ruane and Tom Vaughan-Lawlor) who are trapped in a remote estate of empty houses that's haunted by sinister shrieking foxes from a distance.

But as they're beckoned from their isolation into a twilight world, they soon find themselves faced with the possibility of paranormal entities, or perhaps it's just their sanity slipping away.

Dread Central had the opportunity to catch up with Finnegan from London during the 2012 SXSW Film Festival and learned more about the up-and-coming filmmaker and his latest short and heard his thoughts on the power of visual storytelling as well what's up next for him.
