Should have been a trilogy
cinephile-00728 April 2023
Adapting a book to screenplay is never a easy task, especially if the book spans across multiple parts. The movie should never lose its core value and at the same time keep its viewers entertained.

Maniratnam has done his best to achieve both but at some times we are left wondered if he should have made it a trilogy rather than a duology. At times it felt like there was a lot happening that could have been expanded into a 3rd movie.

The moment you walk out of PS 2,you have mixed feelings about it. It runs for 2.45hrs and yet the plot feels rushed at times.

Jayaram Ravi was the show stealer in this one while Trisha had pretty much nothing to do except the beautiful Aga naga sequence with Karthi.

The final battle had no impact on the movie.

Overall PS2 is a worthy sequel to its predecessor.

Fixed the fixe-able flaws of part1 - Moving saga of Aditta Karikalan, with boredom notwithstanding
Dolchi6 May 2023
This movie is a laudable attempt at recreating a thousand year old world - Note this is a "world" and not merely the Tamil nations of the time.. You see Sri Lanka, Andhra, Telengana, Chattisgarh, Rajasthan, Maharastra and even Thailand, perhaps as historically Chola influence was far-flung in a sprawling sphere of influence. Therein lies the problem, the world creation has taken an entire first part 1 to accomplish and the second part merely wraps up the story; albeit with some great moments of cinematic finesse in terms of acting, music, cinematography, costume design and direction.

We have seen a lot of periodic drama by now.. Whether it be the home-brewn "Baahubali" franchise, or the Western "The Game of Thrones" franchise, fans always went in to see "PS2" with similar expectations. Granted, we know that these two examples were spectacular in part thanks to an illogical world with fantasy science and fictional creatures. Still, movies such as these always showed how thrilling historical fiction could be, and films like "23aam pulikesi" did not even involve fantasy. These movies are completely different from "Ponniyin Selvan", yet manage to make the audience enthralled throughout the screen time and grips one with various techniques from the cinematic craft's handbooks. This is what is missing in the "PS" franchise as a whole - the screenplay was co-written by stage play writers such as Kumaravel and the novel writer Jayamohan.. These two are quite talented and possibly the best at Tamil fiction in their respective media, yet they have neither the training nor the effort to convert the "PS" books into a compelling franchise on the big screen (as many have already noted)...

The director has spun his magic around this fictional portrayal of the Tamil kings of old.. and shown the characters involved as complicated, realistic beings who one can appreciate up-close. Buoyed by fabulous performances from the cast, Maniratnam has succeeded in his long-time dream of bringing "PS" to the big screen. Yet, being a director predominantly obsessed with romance and characterisations, he has failed to deliver the twists & turns deserving of a mammoth effort.

Also, the action scenes are unimaginative and lacking of the ancient time's technological prowess.. For instance, the "Seric steel" which was common at this time to make sharp weapons was the inspiration behind the "Valyrian steel" in "The song of ice and fire" book series which in turn was made into the hit TV series "A game of thrones". Yet, why do we not have a passing mention of this in this movie franchise?! You need to have this attention to detail when you have to back up such Herculean efforts by the leading cast of this movie. Also, the time had many Muslim shipwrights advance the navy of Cholas, we do not see even a little of this.. We at least see the Chinese in form of physicians, who were behind the silk and fire arrows of the fabled Chola gunboats. We do not see the Arabian horses which were the reason why Chola cavalry won against North India so effortlessly multiple times, being more well suited for fast raids and horse archery. At least, we see the elephants which were five times in number in the Chola army, when compared to the Gangetic plain empires, thanks to differing geographic conditions. Also, having a Tiger head in the ships just like Dragon heads in the Viking ships of this age - is a nice imaginative touch. Yet, at times reality is mightier than fiction like the Seric steel which was rumoured to hold its edge even after hitting granite and cut medieval everything from silk to the European broadswords in half during the crusades.

The genius of the director is to maintain Aditta till the very end. In fact, few had expected Aditta (played by Vikram) Karikalan's character to be in the second half. Yet, he holds sway till half an hour before the movie ends. Also, the first ten minutes of this final thirty minutes is about others discussing him and the next fifteen minutes of battle is for him, followed by a five minute summary of Rajaraja's accomplishments. A few ancient kings & generals later fasted as pious scholars, after PTSD. This was depicted as fiction, although it is not shown that Chola Brahmins were Aditta's assasins in reality. Still, the level of detail in the filming production is impeccable. You see amazing costume design which mirror Cholas of the time, while appealing to a nation's current sensibilities. Also, every frame is like a painting as most backdrops are brilliant if indoors thanks to the set-work/VFX, and beautiful if outdoors.. This level of detail to tell a story which winds its way around the Chola empire would have been better. The twists and turns are told in a way which invites yawns. You do not see the audience rooting for any character, as we are not allowed the time to let any individual's heart or nerve points sink in to our thoughts. For instance, Vikram Prabhu's character has been dealt with neatly according to the book. Yet, not allowing a rushed script around his actions would have been better - he looks like a comedy film's heroine rebounding like in Kalakalappu2. Also, we do not see the tone remaining consistent throughout the film, bewildering us further.

Every frame Vikram comes in the film is deserving of an applause. Be it the first few scenes of battle ready pitching, or the later scenes of roaring dialogues from atop a horse (as if he was born to be a king, and has lived forever atop a horse), or the later heated discussions; he has given the word "method acting" a new definition. All actors have done their parts exceedingly well, from Jayaram (some comic relief, at last!) to Karthi, Jayam Ravi (subtle smile from atop that elephant - wow), Parthiban (owned the fort, shined in the few scenes like a true General), Prabhu (thundered in his siege), Sarath (his emotional scenes made him the hero of the scenes), Lal (fitting tribute to who could have been Uttamasili's peer), Rahman (just splendid as the sage-like prince, stylish finesse notwithstanding), Trisha (Kundavai, the powerhouse), Prakashraj (nothing less than magnificent throughout), Aishwaraya Rai (A revelation in the Kadambur scenes). I do not have much complaints of what has been changed from the books; the team has told a wonderful fictional story, albeit in a bland and soul-less way. We do not want fantastical action where palm trees are turned to catapults for humans like in Baahubali, yet we at least want some creative and engaging action where we enjoy what we see. Yet, we witness just regular action from any masala movie - which assistant director was responsible for these, I wonder..

The final action scene was marvellous for some, and laborious for some to sit through. Either way, the amount spent on this seemed to have paid dividends, as some loved this. The CGI was good, although some scenes had goofy VFX in the movie as a whole.. I have a few gripes about the climax though... Jayam Ravi did look incredibly upset about a loss in the scene before the battle. Yes, I agree that the happiness at gaining back some lost comrades/family & territory would be gratifying. Yet, I do not understand how the whole kingdom could move on so quickly, onto a gleeful coronation ceremony. At least, a few moments of reflection about the loss would have been worth displaying for the believability factor.

The opening of the film gives a more in-depth background to the whole romance in question of the film, replete with "Thalapathy" vibes. The river islet scene with Karthi (Vanthiyathevan) blindfolded and Trisha (Kundavai) is very popular in social media, deservingly so and yet laughable at times. The intensity of Kishore (Ravidasan) seems to have been misused in this part, making his character less impactful. The immense potential in these Pandyan rebel actors has been wasted. After showing Ravidasan's gang as pointless before the Chola princes, the main villains seems to be Nandhini and an antihero like Aditta Karikalan himself - thereby irking many Tamil fundamentalists online. Yet, the main fault of both films is not making, fighting these Pandyans a problem for the Chola princes. The unexpected Jayam Ravi (Arunmozhi/Rajaraja) fight to fend off Soman (Nawaz Khan) and gang is amazing for many viewers, yet is not choreographed beautifully enough to lend any justice to the villains. Strong villains add challenges to heroes in a movie, yet the palpable lack of tension whenever behemoths like Soman/Ravidasan enter the scene is ridiculous to say the least. Arunmozhi is shown to have difficulty in fighting the Rastrakuta king, so the ease with which he dispatched the Pandyan rebels is ridiculous (starting from the first part). Although, this inconsistency is nothing compared to other loopholes, this is glaring as we needed some tension at least, to have a film which does not lay bare the events without any suspense.

Poonguzhazhi and Senthan Amudhan are wasted, yet this is okay. Mandhakini being a strong rockclimbing deep-sea diver is reasonable, although some who have never met such people balk at this idea.. Some staging around these characters could have been done with a lot more creativity. Yet, we have some slow moving, repetitive scenes. The main fault, as I emphasise again, is that the film is boredom inducing, although several faults from the first part were fixed. The scenes are beautiful, of a love saga from a thousand years ago, yet this could have been told in a way more interesting manner. Watch this if you are waiting for a fitting and better end to the first part. This could also work if you are into visual spectacles, AR Rahman's wonderful music, amazing drama, Maniratnam's romance and/or masterful acting.

PS: The standout scene of PS emerging from a Buddhist vihara before the intermission, was spectacular. However, silly action sequences & the goofy speech with an elephant were off-putting to many. Vikram-Aish face-off scene was fabulous.

Honest Review : Part 2
best-review28 April 2023
Before reading this review, please ensure that you have read my review of PS1 and watched PS1. It is crucial to avoid spoilers in order to fully appreciate the plot twists in the movie.

In comparison to PS1, PS2 surpasses its predecessor in terms of quality. PS2 effectively resolves most of the confusion and doubt that arose from PS1. However, the writing falls short in several scenes, but the actors manage to make it captivating.

Certain details have been altered in the film. Readers may not appreciate the climax. Nonetheless, Mani Rathnam's direction is a masterclass in itself. The performances are on par with those in PS1, but viewers' expectations may not align after witnessing PS1. Vikram, Karthi, and Ravi deliver performances similar to PS1.

Aishwarya Rai, portraying both Nandini and Umai Rani, may have a greater impact as the latter. The character Kundavai may not meet our expectations, but Trisha's extraordinary acting in her limited screen time is noteworthy. We don't anticipate much from Jayaram, but he surprises us. The child/young characters are satisfactory, and the remaining cast is fine.

I must commend Mani Rathnam for giving faces to the characters in the book. Even if the film fails to impress you, it allows for a clearer and more accurate imagination of the Chola kingdom when reading the books.

Technically, everything is as good as in PS1, and the visual effects seem even better this time. The background music aptly complements the film's mood without overpowering it. I highly recommend watching it in theaters for the full experience.

Should have been a Netflix series.
arunmohandas1 May 2023
It should have been a Netflix series and not a two part movie. The story is heavily rushed. Sub plots have no development. Dialogs are almost like narration. Better to have given voice over/naa ration directly. Most characters except Aditya Karikaalan and Nandini fail to establish an emotional connect with the audience. If taken as a Netflix series, each subplot would have got enough screen space and the audience would not have to keep wondering who are the random main characters walking around on the screen. AR Rahman is still a class act and no questions about that. Making movies from novels is a bad idea. Please consider make it a Series.

Absolute banger of a movie! Pride of Tamil, or even Indian cinema!
Movie-EnjoyerCorps28 April 2023
This movie has all the essentials of a gripping story. To start us off, we have the conflict of the story. The Pandyas who seek revenge on the Cholas, Nandhini who secretly plots against the Chola Kingdom, and an enemy left behind from the war with Rashtrakutas by Aditha Karikalan. The first part only introduces to the atmosphere of the "real deal", which is the sequel of to the film. This movie is where the tension rises, and true faces of characters are revealed. How characters withstand, and resist the incoming threat to their kingdom is the soul of the film.

My thoughts: Wow! First things first, hats off to the technical team of this film! They rocked...The VFX was amazing, the sets were marvelous, the costumes were suited for the time period of the film. The cameraman, did an amazing job here, with beautiful and crisp shots. And AR Rahman, is as usual the rockstar here. His work won't go unnoticed because the BGM was simply felt in every moment of this magnum opus. Every actor of the cast did a fantastic job! Chiyaan Vikram lived his character no shots in the film felt artificial, Jayam Ravi is well suited for his role of Arunmozhi, Karthi as usual killed it with his amazing stunts and acting, Trisha did an amazing job. And Aishwarya Rai, man her expression it self tells a thousand words! Her acting was simply spectacular! Every single side artist also did wonderful jobs! Mani Ratnam yet again proves his dedication, with amazing directions.

In summary, this magnum opus is something to be celebrated. The screenplay was on point, and no point in the film felt slow or laggy. Everything went by so fast! Definitely a mega-blockbuster.

Vikram and Aishwarya; two show stealers
SoumikBanerjee199612 June 2023
This would undoubtedly come across as convoluted and difficult to follow, especially for those unfamiliar with the epic upon which it is based, but I believe that those who have read the books and remember every character and what they stand for will have plenty to cherish.

Adapting a story that spans five books into two 2-and-a-half-hour movies is not an easy task, but I do applaud Mani Ratnam for his noble effort, as he has tried his hardest to transform mere words into mesmerising visuals. Though those expecting something along the lines of Baahubali will be disgruntled, despite the fact that the sets are magnificent and the action is adequate.

However, the dazzling chemistry shared by Vikram and Aishwarya would dissuade even the harshest critics of these films from voicing their views. That confrontation scene is among the best I have witnessed so far in regional features. Cinema reached its pinnacle there and then.

Better than first one.
amar_deshmukh5 May 2023
Finally, the dream of director "Mani Ratnam" become a reality with release of part 2.

Part 1 was exactly what I thought, a setup for more drama and twisted political games.

What I anticipated for Part 1 is a setup for greater drama and deranged political games and that is exactly what I got.

Better action scenes, cinematography, beautiful lighting, lavish scenery, expansive art direction, authentic costumes and an engaging story are all there in Part 2. I had my doubts about how the director would manage to fit in so much of the tale in this one, but he managed it almost flawlessly, except for the final war sequence, which felt clumsy and averagely staged otherwise it could have been a fantastic conclusion. In the war sequence, camera was too shaky, And I forgot where the warriors were in the field.

A brief backstory of "Aditya" and "Nandini" is given at the start. It helps us to understand the reasoning behind Nadini's action, And Aditya's behaviour.

Reasons why minister trying to coronate "Madhurantkan" as next king, What's "Nandini's connection to "Pandays".

We get to see how different religion and belief were coexisted that time. Whether its "Shaivism", "Vaishnavism" or "Buddhism".

We learn the minister's motivations for wanting to appoint "Madhurantkan" as the new monarch as the plot develops. How each person's loyalty is motivated differently. Some people are driven by friendship, while others are driven by vengeance and pride.

The meeting sequence between "Aditya" and "Nandini" is handled masterfully, and both "Vikaram" and "Aishwarya" gave flawless performances. Their emotional state is shown with circular camera movement, while keeping its focus on their expressions. "Aditya" keeps a smile on his face while carrying guilt in his heart and desire for vengeance of "Nandini" fading away is beautifully done. Fire burning in the back and "Nandini" realises her mistake, and scene end with voice of helplessness, Just beautiful.

Due to Mani Ratnam's cautious direction and AR Rahman's soundtrack, the drama in the film avoids becoming overly dramatic.

When compared to the first part, music whether it be BGM or songs is an improvement.

A beautiful, intimate, and sensuous encounter occurs when "Kundavai" and the blinded "Vallavaraiyan" they meet without being sexually or verbally explicit.

I enjoyed "Jayam Ravi" who played "Arunmozhi" in that role, but the director's decision to have him fight against Pandya assassins in slow motion appeared artificial in the environment, which was depicted as being rustier and rawer.

I would suggest a recap of first part to enjoy part 2 more, And watch it on big screen.

vishalmellark3 May 2023
The drama , the staging is so much better than any film its compared to . I wont say it doesn't have its flaws , but there so many positives to love about . The -ve's fade away.

Aishwarya rai bachchan Aishwarya rai bachchan Aishwarya rai bachchan

That women is a wonder. The way she screamed in that one scene, holy goddamn.

Vikram as aditha karikalan , that dude is just like fr . Born to get his heart broken by beautiful women.

Karthi as Vanthiyathevan , Trisha as kundavai ate everyone.

They are born to do these roles. You know ponniyin selvan actor is a right choice when he nails the scenes with less dialogue and more expressions, mannerisms. That interval scene for example.

ARR is in terrific form. PERIYA BHAI NEVER DISAPPOINTS WITH MANI RATNAM.

ART WORK , SET PIECES , SCREENPLAY, THE PURPOSEFUL closeup shots , Dialogues, Direction.

We can see a bit of Shakespeare, Polanski or infact innaritu sometimes in this film . A visual wonder , A modern masterpiece.

I can understand the negative reviews totally , I wouldn't judge. Not every food is for you to taste.

P. S : I LOVE YOU SO MUCH MANI , AVALODHAN 🤣

Totally ruined the book story
rajvignesh-6014010 May 2023
I am not reveal any spoilers, but my anger was that the story was totally ruined, the part of story has been completely changed which is the core part. As a book reader i am really disappointed but general audiance liked the movie. But it could have been better with some investment and story telling. Didnt expect this from mani, many secrets didnt reveal and all being hidden and history told is also so wrong. The dailogues not entirely in pure tamil which disrupts the beauty of Ponniyin selvan. The ponniyin selvans beauty is the dialogues and screenplay kalki possessed. The screenplay is good but dailogues were worst. I expected more mani sir. The camera work is average , vikram was top notch in his acting he nailed it as always, others were just in frame. But if u arent a book reader u wud love this movie but i cant. Pls do check out this movie in theater.

A timeless classic. Must watch!!!!!!
kirthana-014146 May 2023
Truly it's Mani Ratnam and his Team's Magnum Opus. Very well made movie. The cast have given their best performance. Loved every scene and there were scenes that I'll remember for a reallyy long time. Don't miss out on watching it on big screen. The soundtrack, cinematography, editing and fights scenes are remarkable.

Definitely a must watch in theatres. Aishwarya, Vikram, Karthi, Jayam Ravi, Trisha, Aishwarya lekshmi, Shobita have all given their characters life and will be remembered by everyone reading the books here on.

What a great treat to the eyes it was. Every character was special and had a depth.

Good content badly made!!
sriramthestranger2 June 2023
The movie has lot of emotional moments but none gets you high and low in the scheme of things. The movie runs and runs without any emotion to connect with. It seems the makers have focused more on the visual elements losing out on the basic stuffs.

The initial flashback is actually parts of a story rather than a narration, and it only gets uplifted purely from Vikram and Aishwarya Rai performance in the later half. The plot reveals are great and stunning, but it is not impactful - it just happens in the scene without any significance.

The climax fight sequence and last act lacks punch and could have been made better!!

Disappointed in the Magnus Movie
srkathithan14 May 2023
Warning: Spoilers
PS 1 travels around the character building of each character. It was like the construction of the basement so that when we watch PS 2 it would have a concrete impact in the minds of the audience.

As a whole PS: 1 and 2 talks about the hatred, lost love, greed, vengeance, the dark political game which we quite frequently observe in our present lives.

Deviation from the book is fine. I can attribute it to the Director's creative choice but what baffled me the most is the Director's choice of some scenes was illogical, takes away from the characters he built and sometimes just cring.

The love story of Vandhiyathevan and Kundhavai finds a place in PS2, and Kalki also does not value this story much. I felt that Manirathinam should have retained the Death Scene of Periya Pazhvettaiaraiyar and his final confession to Azhvarkadiyan. This was visualized by Kalki. This would give more meaning to Vandhiyathevan and Periya Pazhuvettaiaraiyar's roles towards the end.

If Pandiya's knew Aishwarya was the illegitimate daughter of Pandiya King and respected her and followed her every command, why did they abandon her suddenly at the end? It almost felt like she was being played till she got rid of Vikram. This just takes away from the character that was built for her...the shrewd woman who is well versed in political strategy.

Madhurantagan, his character was such a joke in this movie. How did he find those sadhu people? They shouldn't be fighting wars or interfering in poltical affairs. During the scene where his alliance was discussing something with the pallava king, Madhurantagan rebels and says I'm not doing this rubbish and just walks off unscathed??? What the hell was that scene.. this isn't elementary school to just switch sides without suffering consequences.

Overall, while there were certainly some enjoyable elements to "Ponniyin Selvan Part 2", I found it difficult to fully engage with the characters and their journeys due to the film's deviations from the book. As such, I would recommend this movie with some reservations, especially for fans of the original story who may be disappointed by the changes made in the adaptation.

A slow paced satisfying sequel.
chand-suhas28 April 2023
Mani Ratnam focuses more on the grief the characters go through in this sequel and one can see how emotionally strong the narrative gets. The conspiring enemies have allied to draw the Cholas out and eliminate them. With Nandini pulling the strings, Karikalan gives in while making it clear, he would never let the kingdom fall. With the news of Arunmozhi's drowning spreading like wildfire, the internal conspiracies intensify along with the Pandyan rebels. Would Nandini succeed in taking her revenge? How does the Cholas survive this threat? Who actually is the mysterious Mandakini, the mute princess? The sequel answers all of it.

Special appreciation for Aishwarya Rai Bachchan's commendable performance. This time both Chiyaan Vikram's Aditha Karikalan and Aishwarya's Nandini / Mandakini get prioritized while others take the backseat. Even Prakash Raj's Sundara Cholan aces in two crucial scenes. The narrative is slow paced and once again Karthi's Vallavarayan takes the onus of providing the much needed entertainment. The face off between Karikalan and Nandini lives up to the hype.

With strong performances, Mani Ratnam comes up with a decent sequel. I definitely felt making this a three part film would've given Mani Ratnam a better opportunity to narrate this story. The third act had lesser impact for me as it felt rushed. Be it a character's change of heart or the murder trial, this segment deserved a little more time. Guess the final battle sequence was more commercially appealing. Despite these blemishes, Mani Ratnam's forte is capturing human drama and he aces that.

A mani ratnam mark periodic drama!!
thottempudikiranprasad28 April 2023
Worthwhile storytelling Quite precise and cautious with the writing!!

Unlike part 1 this one has it's own high moments which makes the narration very engaging and entertaining!!

Gripping screenplay right from the start off... well introduced setup with proper establishment of flashback episode!!

Well executed action & emotional sequences... especially intensity in the interval block and making of the pre-climax war episode Bar was pushed a notch higher this time in terms of technicalities... enhanced the chances of valuable development towards the plot and conflict in the story!!

Except for the pace of story progression this movie has got all the potential to be it's better version!!

Authenticity of background score is well maintained throughout!!

Wonderful framing and brilliant shot making!!

Splendid performances from entire cast Overall: Definitely made a better impression for the expectations... emotional quotient outshined every other craft and stood-out to it's range.

Book is far better
arjunms29 April 2023
As someone who recently watched "Ponniyin Selvan Part 2", I can say that I had mixed feelings about the film. While I appreciated the source material, which is Kalki's famous novel "Ponniyin Selvan", and the stunning cinematography, there were several aspects of the movie that left me feeling disappointed.

For one thing, the film differed significantly from the book, which was a letdown for me as a viewer. In particular, I felt that the war in the climax of the movie felt unnecessary, and it seemed to deviate from the original text in terms of plot and character development. Additionally, I was disappointed that the storyline involving Sendhan Amudhan revealing himself as the real Madhuranthakan was dropped from the movie.

Could have been better
famfam-874751 May 2023
Pls wait for it to be released on Prime. We were expecting a lot from this movie. This is definitely a movie that u can wait for till it is released on Prime. Part one was way better. Here we felt there was too much focus on unnecessary parts of the plot. What was worse was that the plot seemed to not have a destination. We weren't sure what we were supposed to focus on. What exactly was the main storyline? We actually came out questioning this. A little flat, predictable in terms of what was going to happen next, but leaving you confused at the end because you don't know what you just watched. Less grand than expected, didn't seem to match the intensity of the music. Overall, we fell for the overhype. Could have given a better review if not for the expectations unfortunately.

A PERFECT ENDING FOR THIS HISTORIC EPIC STORY
skmenon199330 April 2023
***Ponniyin Selvan: Part 2 Tamil Movie Review***

No need of further introduction as in 2021, Ponniyin Selvan Part 1 created wonders at the box office. At the end of the 1st part, the film threw many questions to the audience. The people who read writer Kalki's book was awaiting how Mani Ratnam had brought the same into the big screen & those who have not read was curious as they were waiting for the questions that came to their mind.

As actor Jayam Ravi who plays the titular role, said in PS 2 promotion that PS 1 was just a trailer, PS 2 is the movie, post watching the movie, I agree to his point.

Screenplay of Mani Ratnam, Jeyamohan, Elango Kumaravel had given 100% justice to Kalki Krishnamurthy original script.

When take up the performances, the lead characters had given the top-notch performance. If in Part 1 if we could see the superlative performance of Trisha, in PS 2 it was Aishwarya who stolen the show. Her dual role as Nandini and Mandakini was outstanding. The vengeance, the anger of her lost love, the sorrow of Nandini on one hand whereas immense homage towards the Chola kingdom by Mandakini on the other, Aishwarya able to revamp herself into these characters well.

Chiyaan Vikram's performance was another noteworthy as in this part his screen presence was more so we could see his magic more.

The scene where Vikram and Aishwarya meet and just express out themselves, that 10 minutes of that scene, Mani Ratnam sir direction, Ravi Varman Cinematography backed by Vikram - Aishwarya stellar performance, audience will feel that the lost love should be reunited. Epic scene in PS: part 2

ARR musical score escalates the intensity of the situation.

The climax shot wherein Jayam Ravi kneels down post the war victory, the BGM thereon gave a goosebumps moment.

Overall PS: Part 2 was a film which feels to be re watchable as it's a movie which is made once in a lifetime.

King of Cholas
AvionPrince1629 April 2023
Warning: Spoilers
So still interesting in the same spirit as the first one. We have more revelations about Nandini, her past, her real father (that was uncertain until the end and we had some suspicions about some thing but was not sure until the end). The death of Aditha by Nandini was a great moment and pretty surprising. The king of cholas who become not Arunmozhi but the other guy who get forbidden of the throne by his own mother. The set design, the visuals was really nice and have some great design and i really enjoyed it. The past of Nandini let us know more about her and Aditha and how things has turned. And even more dramatic when we know that Aditha killed her father. We knew that later. We have still the conspiracy, some surprises and great songs. It was still a great surprise for me. And i didnt regret to watch it to be honest. It was great! But i didnt read the books so i cant really compare with the events of the movie to be honest. But i really enjoyed it despite my lack of knowledge of the Cholas. A nice movie.

Little bit disappointment to the readers, especially the climax
m-ramanan28 April 2023
RATED 8/10 Language: Tamil Media Partner: Amazon Prime Source: NIL RECOMMENDED

Mani started the epic with proper first part and the ending of part one is classic. And concluded with the second with little bit more of compromise to the novel. The second part start was awesome and added some extra flashbacks to add more strength to the core plot.

The production values, the presentation and the acting was class. Mani and others writers brilliance were seen in lot of scenes where it was difficult to imagine while reading the novel. The Killing sequence were captured in nice and simple way. It was bit complicated in novel.

Now to the negatives: Looks like more positive shades added to Nandini character than in the first part. Kundavai and ArulMozhi characters are bit compromised. Lot of illogical side stories added like the war sequences.

The climax, no Novel reader will agree on it... I agree if we extend, we need one more part to be taken, but it looks like disturbing to see the current climax....(novel readers can understand, others cant understand this, sorry) Rahuman dubbing is pathetic.

By forgetting novel, we can enjoy this movie... Recommended for the effort and output.

Review from Non reader

Before getting into details , to be precise Ponniyin Selvan 1 and 2 are collection of well crafted standalone scenes put in an incoherent sequence .

Ponniyin Selvan 2 starts off with a beautiful romance sequence between teenage Aditha Karikalan and Nandini , reminding us of Maniratnam's trademark style . Movie continues the story from the prequel and revealing the unanswered questions behind the Nandini's character . First half was good and exhausting as same time , the narrative just jumps from one good scene to another good scene but majorly missed the connectivity between them , this kind of narrative really needed good attention from the audience . Same goes to Second half , but irrelevant climax war sequence and unsatisfying conclusion slightly pulls down the second half . This time characters which had less scope in part 1 had better scope in this and at sametime missed some characters that had better scope on part 1 . Performance wise casts did their part very well . Cinematography was great , with good color grading , delivers a granduer visuals . Production design were topnotch . ARR Bhai asusual gave terrific composition , this time except one or two songs other songs weren't that noticeable but somehow contributes sub consciously . These technical aspects were really better than first part and elevates the theatrical experience .

Overall , it's understandable that concising a five parts novel into a two parts movie is an insane task but still Maniratnam and his team did a good job . If you really liked PS1 then definitely don't miss out to watch PS2 because it's better than it's prequel in many aspects .

No momentum, dry and lazy.
rajatsawant28 April 2023
Don't watch in theatre, and certainly not with 4DX.

Screenplay - worst, no momentum. There is no emotional connection from one scene to another. Anything is happening without any context. The only screenplay that is understandable is with Nandini and Aditya and they have very little screen time.

Story - Well I don't know the original story but this one is not satisfactory.

Acting - Vikram was good, but not much screen time. None of the characters are explored to their full potential. All of them have the same note from start to finish.

Music - I don't remember any songs in the movie.

Direction - Mani Ratnam is out of touch with the craft.

Carried by Ash and Vikram, a very good movie with a few negatives
bgsam_010128 April 2023
The first half was fantastic. Aishwarya Rai was magnificent, as was Vikram. The flow and pacing felt better than part 1.

Most of the second half was fantastic, too. Some of the scenes were excellently shot - Ash and Vikram again steal the show. But the ending was a downer, and a big one at that.

Condensing a huge novel into 2 movies requires some changes to the original script and I understand that. So, I have no qualms with a few things (even important ones) being changed. But grandiose battle sequences is not what PS is about, and it is not Mani Ratnam's forte. Those pointless battle scenes (not in the novel) could've been replaced with some more character exploration and depth. I complained that PS-1 had more battle scenes than needed and PS-2 takes it further.

PS is about politics, secrets, love, and an intricately woven tale, not some grand battles fought by Cholas. Even Rahman's background score felt a tad underwhelming. At some points, the music was excellent, but it for most of the scenes, it didn't pack the punch PS1's score did, which I thought was quite good.

This had potential to be 9/10, but sits at 7.5-8/10. It is still a very good movie, but I cannot help but feel a bit of a missed opportunity.

History made!
kalaivanicuteheart30 April 2023
The movie was amazing and was better than PS1 to me because too many of my questions were answered in this. I want to say about the three epic scenes and the wow moments in the movie, one the love portion between Adithya karikalan and Nandhini, second that one scene between kundhavi and Vandhiyathevan, third the death scene. Vandhiyathevan adds the fun element to the movie. He is the only one responsible for the laughters bursting out in the theater because others are super serious. A Chinese friend complained about too many characters in the movie. It would have been nice if the characters were introduced in the beginning of the movie. It's highly recommended to learn the characters before going to the movie if you don't know the story. It is also disappointing that the unexpected guy is crowned in the end. Trisha as Kundavi and Aishwarya as Nandhini were just smashing it. Vikram as Karikalan vera level performance. Also the young karikalan did well. Ravi as Ponniyin Selvan just so perfect for the role. There cannot be a better casting! Kudos to Mani Ratnam and the team for being thoughtful about everything! The only thing that I missed in the movie is the grandeur of Bahubali. Yet this is a unique masterpiece! The review and the movie would be incomplete without AR Rahman. He made some fabulous bgm in the movie! My most favorite character in the movie is the little Nandhini!
