Neil Young: Under Review 1966-1975 (2007)

Over the past several years the company Chrome Dreams have turned out several unauthorized documentaries about various music legends including Bob Dylan. As the title shows, this one here takes a look at the first decade in the career of Neil Young and covers his early days in Canada, the work with Buffalo Springfield, joining up with Crosby, Stills and Nash and also his solo work with albums including Neil Young, Everybody Knows This is Nowhere, After the Gold Rush, Harvest, Time Fades Away, On the Beach, Tonight's the Night and Zuma. If you check out certain sites you're going to witness several die- hard Young fans attacking this film and the follow-up but I think that's a tad bit strong. As a die-hard Dylan fan I've seen all of this companies work and yes they didn't teach me anything that I didn't already know but at the same time it's fun hearing other people's thoughts on the music and it's also a good place for those unfamiliar with the artist to start. With that said, I think this documentary is good for what it is. It features a few music experts talking about the albums and what was going on in Young's life. They offer up their opinions on the quality of the work and as a fan I like hearing what others think. There's some minor footage taken from other films including RUST NEVER SLEEP so if you're wanting more music clips that comments then you will be disappointed here. Again, this is certainly far from ground-breaking but if you're new to Young's work it will give you a good idea of these albums and this portion of his career.
