In Paul Thomas Anderson's 2021 coming-of-age joint Licorice Pizza, Cooper Hoffman gave a breakout performance as a fresh-faced kid who gets in over his head with an older woman. And now, as Variety's reporting confirms, Cooper Hoffman is set to play a fresh-faced kid who gets in over his head with an older woman once again — albeit with a little less of a '70s nostalgic glow and a little more of a dangerous twist. The actor, son of Philip Seymour Hoffman, has been cast as Olivia Wilde's sexual muse in erotically charged thriller I Want Your Sex, the latest movie from Mysterious Skin auteur Gregg Araki.
Written by Araki alongside his Now Apocalypse co-writer Karley Sciortino, I Want Your Sex — in case the title doesn't quite spell it out clearly enough — looks set to be a typically raw and unflinching feature from the White Bird In A Blizzard filmmaker.

Nineties New Queer Cinema icon Gregg Araki has not directed a feature since leaving Eva Green’s body frozen in the suburban snow globe of “White Bird in a Blizzard” in 2014. Since then, the DIY taboo buster has gone the way so many indie directors have to: by applying their personality to TV shows. In Araki’s case, that includes directing episodes of “Dahmer” and “American Gigolo.”
The iconoclastic Southern California filmmaker — known for “The Doom Generation” and “Mysterious Skin” and celebrated for his stylishly drawn stories of youthful sexual identity coming to bloom — also wrote and directed the 2019 series “Now Apocalypse.” Now, he’s teaming up with Karley Sciortino, the co-writer on that Starz show about sex and aliens in LA, for a new movie titled “I Want Your Sex.”

Gregg Araki is set to direct Olivia Wilde in his next feature, Black Bear’s provocative thriller “I Want Your Sex.”
The film features an original script penned by Araki and Karley Sciortino which blithely explores desire, domination and fantasy.
When fresh-faced Elliot lands an exciting job for renowned artist, icon and provocateur Erika Tracy (Wilde), his fantasies come true as Erika taps him to become her sexual muse. But Elliot soon finds himself out of his depth as Erika takes him on a journey more profound than he ever could have imagined, into a world of sex, obsession, power, betrayal and murder.
Arlie Day (“To Leslie”) and Mike Page (“The Storied Life of A.J. Fikry”) are casting the picture. The film will be produced by Seth Caplan, a past winner of the John Cassavetes Award at the Film Independent Spirit Awards, alongside Black Bear’s Teddy Schwarzman and Michael Heimler.

While John Carpenter's Vampires did divide critics upon release, the horror-action movie’s cast went on to some pretty impressive roles. Vampires is something of an anomaly in the legendary horror filmmaker’s canon. An offbeat blend of Western tropes, vampire lore, and gory horror, Vampires follows a group of hard-drinking, foul-mouthed vampire hunters led by Jack Crow. Crow was raised by the Catholic Church to kill vampires and assembled a team of hyper-competent killers, but almost all of them were wiped out shortly after the movie’s opening scene by the main villain, Jan Valek.
While Vampires isn’t John Carpenter’s best horror movie, it is a fun genre mash-up that contains a few memorable scenes. While Jack’s best friend Tony takes Katrina, a prostitute with a psychic connection to Valek, hostage, Jack is forced to pair up with the well-meaning but inexperienced Father Adam Guiteau to take down the centuries-old vampire.

“The Terminator,” “Catch Me If You Can,” “Footloose,” “Taxi Driver” and “The Silence of the Lambs” all mark notable library offerings this month, in addition to “Superbad,” “Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance)” and “Eighth Grade.”
Despite HBO Max pulling a number of originals from its roster over the past several months, HBO Max originals premiering on the platform this month include a Dionne Warwick documentary, an adult European animated series titled “Poor Devil” and “Harley Quinn: A Very Problematic Valentine’s Day Special” based on the popular animated series.

The selection of titles for HBO Max in February 2023 will include the continuation of hit TV shows, premieres of holiday specials, and Oscar nominees. HBO Max’s January 2023 additions kicked off the new year with the premieres of TV shows like The Last of Us, which broke HBO records for having the highest jump in viewership for its second episode, and the original series Velma. There are diverse streaming releases slates and then there is Hulu’s list of new releases for May 2022. There are no big franchises here, no big themes – just a whole bunch of original and library titles for everyone to enjoy.
Hulu’s major original releases in May come in the middle of the month. Candy premieres on May 9 and stars Jessica Biel as your friendly neighborhood axe murderer. If that sounds a bit outlandish, bear in mind that this limited series is based on the real life story of Candy Montgomery and her victim, the tragically named Betty Gore. On May 15, Hulu will play host to Conversations with Friends. This is the latest adaptation of the works of Sally Rooney. After the breakaway success of Normal People, Hulu is undoubtedly hoping for more lightning in a bottle.

Lionsgate brought CinemaCon 2022 to a close Thursday with a presentation that featured adaptations of a Judy Blume classic, a spinoff of one of its surprise hit films, and the return of John Wick and “The Hunger Games.”
Comedian Sebastian Maniscalco hosted the presentation, combining the sneak previews with a standup routine in which he joked that the upcoming “Expendables 4” with Sylvester Stallone, Jason Statham and 50 Cent would be “more violent than Will Smith in a comedy club.” Maniscalco also showed his own upcoming comedy “About My Father,” which he co-wrote and based on his own relationship with his Italian immigrant father. He was joined onstage by Robert De Niro, who plays Maniscalco’s father, as well as co-stars Leslie Bibb and Kim Cattrall.
Rachel McAdams and Abby Ryder Fortson appeared to introduce a trailer for the film adaptation of Judy Blume’s “Are You There God? It’s Me Margaret.

Helen Mirren has signed on to star in Lionsgate’s “White Bird: A Wonder Story,” a spinoff of the hit 2017 film that starred Jacob Tremblay as a boy with a rare facial deformity.
“White Bird” also stars Gillian Anderson and will be directed by “Christopher Robin” filmmaker Marc Forster.
The spinoff sees Bryce Gheisar return as Julian Albans, the antagonist of “Wonder” who bullied Auggie Pullman (Tremblay) for his deformity and was suspended and later pulled from school by his mother, played by Anderson. Mirren will play Julian’s Jewish grandmother Sara, whom the boy is sent to live with in Paris. During his stay, Julian learns about his grandmother’s past hiding as a child in Nazi-occupied France with the help of a classmate and his family. The new film also stars Ariella Glaser and Orlando Schwerdt as Sara and her friend in WWII flashback scenes.

Lionsgate’s revenues fell during the most recent fiscal quarter, as the media company behind the “Hunger Games” and “John Wick” franchises recorded a loss of $13.9 million.
The company did manage to beat Wall Street’s expectations, however, with its earnings bolstered by the growing popularity of its Starz service and through lucrative licensing deals for its older films and television shows. Revenues for the period ending in December topped out at $836.4 million, a 16.2% decline. Lionsgate also recorded net losses of 6 cents per share and adjusted earnings of 21 cents per share.
Analysts had expected Lionsgate to report $776.5 million in revenue, a loss of 11 cents per share, and adjusted earnings per share 21 cents.
Lionsgate also improved its cash position, an important metric during a time when Covid-19 has upended the entertainment business, making film production more expensive and shuttering many movie theaters. Lionsgate said it had $551.5 million in cash and cash equivalents,...

Lionsgate has signed Marc Forster to direct the drama “White Bird: A Wonder Story,” a year after buying the feature films rights to the R.J. Palacio graphic novel.
The studio adapted Palacio’s popular book “Wonder” into a 2017 feature film starring Jacob Tremblay, Owen Wilson and Julia Roberts. “Wonder” was an impressive performer at the box office with $330 million worldwide.
“White Bird” centers on a young Jewish girl hidden away by a boy and his family in Nazi-occupied France during World War II. Forster’s directing credits include “Neverland,” which was nominated for a best picture Academy Award; “Christopher Robin”; “World War Z”; “Quantum of Solace”; “The Kite Runner”; and “Stranger Than Fiction.” He will direct “White Bird” from a screenplay by Mark Bomback.

Indie auteur Gregg Araki’s outlandishly weird Starz series “Now Apocalypse” has officially been canceled after one season. But there may be a future for the show yet, according to the filmmaker.
“We are shopping for a new home since the show’s cheap, and with the most amazing cast and incredibly passionate fanbase,” said Araki in an email to IndieWire. “The fan reaction let me know that the people who watched it got it exactly as I hoped. The show really is a dream come true for me. I love it so much and am so proud of the work we all did together. And regardless of what happens, I’m happy knowing that it will live forever in the streaming/sharing cosmos.”

Often with low-budget filmmaking, the tendency is to reach for cinematography with a realistic look that’s rooted in the use of natural light sources. That description, though, has never applied to indie legend Gregg Araki and it certainly didn’t apply to his first foray into a TV, “Now Apocalypse.” It was something cinematographer Sandra Valde-Hansen discovered working with Araki on two features, “Kaboom” and “White Bird in a Blizzard.”
“I was two years out of AFI and getting the opportunity to work for Gregg opened up my visual world,” said Valde-Hansen, who appear who appeared at IndieWire’s Consider This Fyc Brunch. “He introduced me to a world where, given the limited resources, we can actually play with color and light and still come under budget and limited time frame.”

Our national nightmare is over: After more than a decade of dystopian futures, obtuse love triangles, and weak Charli Xcx singles, Hollywood’s flash-in-the-pan love affair with Ya film adaptations has finally run its course. You can feel it in the air, and you can see it in the dwindling box office returns. The climactic installments of “The Maze Runner” and “The Divergent Series” are still on the horizon, and an unusually promising adaptation of John Green’s “Looking for Alaska” continues to percolate in pre-production, but bodies tend to wriggle for a little while after they’re officially pronounced dead. The fact of the matter is that Voldemort has been vanquished, the people of District 12 have overthrown The Capitol, and Bella Swan has stopped pouting. There will always be movies made for the tween audience, but make no mistake: The Ya world as we know it has come to an end.

For my money, there are few up and coming actresses in Hollywood more exciting to watch than Shailene Woodley. In a relatively short period of time, Woodley has managed to work her way up the A-list, becoming someone whose mere presence in a film is something to be excited about. She’s been snubbed for Academy Award attention at least three times now, for The Descendants, The Fault in Our Stars, and The Spectacular Now, though her time is coming soon enough, perhaps even this year for her supporting work in the biopic Snowden. She’s also been able to anchor a big blockbuster franchise, taking the lead in the Divergent films, which continue this week with The Divergent Series: Allegiant. One thing is for sure, she’s one of the best that the industry has to offer… Here now are Woodley’s best performances to date: 5. Divergent 4. The Descendants...

"The reason why I don’t like to say that I am a feminist or I am not a feminist is because to me it’s still a label. I do not want to be defined by one thing. Why do we have to have that label to divide us? We should all be able to embrace...

Harder Candy: Pike Headlines Predictably Exploitative Rape Thriller
It seems Rosamund Pike is now the girl most likely to…. exact ruthless retribution on her instigators, if judging from the latest indie thriller Return to Sender, unfortunately arriving on the heels of her Oscar nominated success in last year’s comparably themed David Fincher film, Gone Girl. But the pedigree of auteur assistance is not on hand with Fouad Mikati’s sophomore effort, his first film since 2010’s Operation: Endgame. Somehow, he amassed a rather respectable cast for this grindhouse knockoff that could have easily premiered on Lifetime if Pike hadn’t suddenly become such a hot commodity. To be fair, we’ll have to wait another year or so to appreciate the actress in some higher quality offerings, and by then this will most likely be forgotten about.

Rosamund Pike stars in the dramatic first trailer for psychological thriller Return to Sender.
The Gone Girl actress appears as a small town nurse who agrees to go on a blind date, but her mysterious suitor (Shiloh Fernandez) is not all he appears.
