The Amish community is fascinating as always - the crime itself less so
phd_travel28 July 2013
Warning: Spoilers
Like the Harrison Ford movie "Witness" this television murder mystery set in the Amish community is a good watch because the community is so fascinating.

Neve Campbell (why don't we see more of her than just Scream nowadays?) plays an ex-Amish detective investigating a murder in the Amish town where she grew up. There is a mystery about her departure from the community. Interesting to see her Amish dialog with the members who shun her for leaving.

Also couple of faults: The solving of the murders in question ends in a rather formula predictable way. Also her detective romantic interest is a bit too plain and the romance isn't convincing. She's got more chemistry with her Amish ex.

Read they were thinking of turning this into a series if the pilot was a success. I think it would be quite a unique show about a detective in an Amish community though I wonder how much crime there would be in that quaint rural place.

Good Amish mystery
steiner-sam19 May 2021
This is a 90-minute TV movie set in Painters Mill, Ohio, a fictional town in Amish country in the present age. It's based on the 2009 novel "Sworn to Silence" by Linda Castillo. "Sworn to Silence" was the first in long series of "Kate Burkholder" novels by Castillo.

Kate Burkholder (Neve Campbell) is the new chief of police of the small Painters Mill force. Kate grew up Old Order Amish but left at age 18 for reasons that are not immediately clear. She became a policewoman and then a detective in Cleveland and has now returned 17 years later. Although it sounds like a good fit on the surface because she knows Pennsylvania Dutch and the local Amish community, she has been banned and shunned for leaving the Amish community. Thus, no one in the Amish district is supposed to talk to her.

An Amish girl is found murdered in an Amish farm field. The victim has been mutilated in a manner reminiscent of a serial killer who had been in the community 16 earlier when five non-Amish girls were killed. We quickly learn that Kate wonders if the killer was Daniel Lapp, an Amish man who apparently died under mysterious circumstances and seemed to have something to do with Kate's leaving the community. But Kate wonders if he really died.

The film introduces us to a variety of characters--Mayor Auggie Brock (Duane Murray), who constantly interferes with Kate and fires her at one point; Lucas Holst (Jilon VanOver), Kate's former Amish boyfriend, who she left without a word; Jacob Burkholder (Christian Campbell), Kate's (and Neve's) brother who is reluctant to talk to her because of the shunning; John Tomasetti (Naom Jenkins), an agent from the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation called in by the mayor, but on the verge of being fired because of his own difficult times that led to PTSD; and Nate Detrick (C. Thomas Howell), the County Sheriff who offers a helping hand on numerous occasions.

The investigation spins its wheels for a time. Kate confirms that Daniel Lapp is dead. We gradually learn more about the circumstances of Kate's sudden departure and who knew her real reasons for leaving. Kate and John Tomasetti develop a romantic relationship. It becomes clear the murderer had significant local connections even though he disappeared for 16 years. The mayor's daughter becomes a second victim. In the climax, Kate figures it all out and almost becomes a victim herself, but all ends well. Lucas Holst finally disarms the murderer at the end, a victory for Amish pacifism.

As a mystery, I thought "An Amish Murder" was pretty good. There is violence, but it's not over-the-top with blood everywhere. The actual crimes take place offscreen. It's a modest-budget film, and the storyline is not very realistic. In terms of the Amish characterization, my biggest problem is why Kate was shunned. It's never stated that she was a baptized member of the church. If she was not before she left, she should not be shunned. And if she was shunned, why would a town hire a police chief to whom a significant portion of the community would not speak?

Some of the Amish men, including Lucas, Kate's former boyfriend who is now married with children, have closely trimmed beards. The house interiors seemed pretty realistic, but there is much we don't see. Most of the action is in town or outbuildings.

Nonetheless, it was an entertaining hour-and-a-half. Critics were quite mixed in their reviews. Some simply don't like the style of Lifetime Television movies. Some thought the pace of the movie too slow and the plot too obvious. That wasn't the case for me.

One of the Best Thrillers in Recent Years
Michael_Elliott14 April 2013
An Amish Murder (2013)

*** 1/2 (out of 4)

Incredibly good made-for-TV thriller about former Amish woman Kate Kurkholder (Neve Campbell) who left her people only to return years later as a cop in the small town. Her people have turned their back on her but she needs their help when a serial killer appears to have returned to the town killing young girls and a secret from her past might reveal who it is. AN AMISH MURDER actually turned out to be one of the best thrillers I've seen in several years, which is somewhat shocking because a lot of TV movies just don't really do much except try to keep someone entertained for a short time. This film here clearly wanted to do so much more because it gave us a terrific mystery that keeps you guessing, a lot of character development and it also builds up some wonderful tension as everything plays out. I must admit that I thought I had figured out who the killer was by the ten-minute mark but I was completely wrong and all the twists and turns are just so good that one can't help but really be on the edge of their seat as everything plays out. I also thought the film did a good job with the main character's development because we get to see her in her new life but also see what haunts her from her Amish years. I thought the way the film showed the Amish people was quite good and it also managed to make you understand why the family would turn their back on her. There's a second subplot dealing with the woman's relationship with a profiler (Noam Jenkins) who is suffering from his own haunted past. Campbell really turns in one of the best performances of her career because she just adds so much depth to the character. She does a remarkable job showing the various emotions with this character and she's completely believable in the role. Jenkins is also terrific in his role as is C. Thomas Howell who plays the sheriff. Director Stephen Gyllenhaal does a very good job at keeping the film moving at a fast pace and thankfully he really brings a terrific atmosphere as well as some very tense moments. AN AMISH MURDER might have worked even better as a theatrical film since the dark subject matter could have shown more but there's still no question that it's one of the better thrillers in recent years.

nearly good
pejoar29 December 2013
Warning: Spoilers
I saw this movie a few days after i finished reading the book. I know it's very difficult too get the atmosphere from a book on the screen. The book is from Linda Castillo and I loved it. The film is about 85 minutes and is 35 minutes too short to get the story good covered. The story and cast are OK but it did not got the atmosphere from the book right, the book is darker and the violence is crueler. The rating would be higher because of the violence. Also, just near the end, You know who is the killer and it surprises You. That is how a thriller should be,not knowing for a long time who did it. I watched the movie till the end and had a bit of a hangover. Why a summary of a book when you could make more of it and do more right to the book. That of course, happens a lot ,with books being filmed. I hope you will read the book as well after watching this movie. I think you will agree with me. When you don't know the book and just watch this movie, You still have a raeasonably time, but it could have been better.

Warning: Spoilers
I thought this was an above average LMN/Lifetime movie. I thought Neve Campbell was believable as Chief of police. I thought the acting all around was good. I actually stayed focused on this movie. I curled up on the couch with popcorn and watched and enjoyed it. Normally when I watch LMN/Lifetime movies I play games on my phone as I watch. I didn't find this at all predictable, and I am normally quick at picking out the perp. I thought the script and the writing was good and it did keep me in suspense. The ending was good with both communities coming together to get the killer. The only thing that wasn't made quite clear is why the killer killed the victims he killed. Yes. I recommend this movie.

Great subject, ineptly handled
ashawguy9 August 2013
Only LMN could take a great concept like an Amish murder investigated by a shunned Amish cop and film it like a romantic LMN Christmas special. I guess they only have one way of treating cinematography and only know one style of background music. I kept waiting for a wounded lost war hero to show up. He would then reclaim his lost love. Next scene the marriage in front of the Christmas tree.

There are famous actors. There are fine performances. Interesting culture clashes. There is such potential for a riveting mystery. In my opinion LMN turned a great concept and story line into romantically filmed pap.

Don't believe the naysayers. Definitely worth the time watching. Even recommended it to a friend. Definitely enough plot twists to keep you guessing who dunnit. The last 30 minutes was pretty intense.

Another Lifetime Television movie that nobody will ever remember.
deloudelouvain23 March 2020
Another Lifetime Television movie, one out of a dozen, with the same kind of set-up you always get with these kind of movies. I'm just not a fan of these kind of movies, saw too late it was Lifetime production otherwise I would probably not even start watching it. Neve Campbell was the reason I thought it could be good, but the story is just not good enough. The first second I saw the by then unknown killer I knew it was him, it was all too predictable, it's just a cheesy yawny story. The acting is just okay, nothing special or wowing. The background music adds nothing to the suspense, it's that typical mellow piano music you always have with Lifetime Television, I honestly don't get why they do that, it just brings down the quality of any movie they make. It's one of those tv-movies you watch with one eye, when you do your chores, or put on as background sound.

A Tapestry of Murder
lavatch5 April 2021
Warning: Spoilers
The image of the quilt is prominent in "An Amish Murder." The design appears in the art work of the chief of police in the quaint town of Painters Mill, Ohio. Chief Kate Burkholder left the local Amish community and has forever after been under their ban. But when a young Amish woman is murdered, Kate is forced to revisit her past during the intense investigation.

The film was crisply directed with outstanding set-ups and location footage in rural Ohio. The script included a well-developed set of characters in both the Amish and English communities. While working on the case, Kate begins a romance with the "profiler" John Tomasetti. The bond that they share is one of tragedy due to John's loss of his family in a violent crime and Kate's secret history that sheds light on why she left the Amish community.

But the most moving relationship is that of Kate and her former fiancé, Lucas Holtz. They clearly still share a spiritual connection that is apparent in each of their scenes together. While they never physically touch in the film, it is clear that they have a profound love for each other.

In the role of Kate Buckholder, Neve Campbell turned in a first-rate performance. Beneath the tough veneer, her character's vulnerable side was exposed. Because of the multi-dimensional protagonist, "An Amish Murder" was much more than a murder mystery. It was a rich tapestry that offered a respectful approach to depicting the Amish community and the sensitive portrayal of an ex-member who defined herself in a new calling that would serve her kinfolk in a new and surprising way.

Boring
astringovits16 January 2013
Warning: Spoilers
This movie was mostly boring, they left out a lot of important information from the book (including most of the relationship between John and Kate and what happened to John's family plus their drug and alcohol dependencies). They also did not include a few of the murders which might have helped to make this story more interesting. It might have helped if they stayed truer to the book, showed the relationship between Kate and John, showed what happened to John and how he ended up in this town (his supervisor trying to fire him for failing his drug test)and maybe gone into more the back story from the original murders and how they figured out it was the Sheriff who committed the crimes.

I definitely recommend people read this book though, the series is rather interesting. Skip the movie if you have read the book, it does not do it justice at all.

Plays like the TV movie it is, a pleasantly entertaining movie, the Campbell siblings are good.
TxMike4 August 2015
Warning: Spoilers
We watched this movie on Netflix streaming movies. It was made as a TV movie to run over a two hour time interval and as such has frequent fades to black for TV commercials.

Neve Campbell is Kate Burkholder coming back to her small home community after being gone some 18 years. We only learn very gradually why she has been gone and why her family shun her. She has returned as Chief of Police. Shades of Margie in "Fargo."

Only six months back, she and her department are confronted with a gruesome murder, the partially clad body of a young woman is found in a snowy field just a stone's throw off the highway. Kate immediately realizes she was an Amish girl.

Kate was born and raised Amish but she left that life, therefore by Amish rules she had to be shunned. Even by her brother, Christian Campbell (her real-life brother) as Jacob (yaa-cobb) Burkholder, but they eventually have to work together to solve the crime.

Another key character is old veteran C. Thomas Howell as elected Sheriff Nathan Detrick.

This is a small movie with moderate production values but it has an interesting story, if not unique.

SPOILERS: While investigating another is found dead, this time the young gymnast daughter of the Mayor. Kate manages to piece together a theory of why the serial killer had been inactive in the area for some years, she correctly figured out it was Detrick who had gone to Alaska for a while. Kate gets captured by Detrick, she plans to hang her upside down and bleed her out like all the others, but help arrives just in time.

Poor Plot, Silly Film, Unbelievable Characters
grant-8634412 February 2021
Warning: Spoilers
What a silly film. From the opening scenes where a Police Officer nearly has a crash with some cattle, I was wondering is this the KeyStone Cops? And then he finds shoes, brand new of course, and radios the fact in. It's not like there isn't all sorts of garbage on the side of a road. There were so many holes in the plot and inconsistencies. For example:
  • The killers MO was to keep the victim alive for at least a week, yet we're not told anything about what happens during that week. After a week of torture the child is dumped still with her clothes. Yet the second murder was an immediate kill and dump, and the alcoholic profiler doesn't mention this. - Similarly with the attempted third murder, the serial killer is going to kill her straight away and not have a week of fun times with her.

  • A big deal is made of the 16 year old 'secret' shotgun killing, yet Kate blabs about it almost immediately to the profiler. And his reaction, 'oh it was self defence, I'll keep it secret too' because he's hoping to get in to her pants. A real confession, a body and no Police follow up.

  • When she's stood down as the Police Chief she visits the Police Station the following day and has full access to everything, even giving orders, and no one says anything.

And to turn such an interesting story and locality, into a romance was a significant mistake.

Great film
dancingbuggever17 January 2013
Warning: Spoilers
I actually really enjoyed this movie. Neve gave a lot of depth to the character and did extremely well. Btw.. The movie title on Lifetime is called "An Amish Murder" Its a great story and reminds me of an Ashley Judd thriller or something. Neve is great in this, because she keeps me entertained when she's just sitting there thinking on screen. She doesn't have to say anything to be interesting. And this movie takes place so close to home???? At the end when he was talking about driving back to Columbus, I was like omg.. That's where I'm at. I've been down in the Amish Country quite a few times.. Lost and wondering where I was.. Horses, buggies, tons of farms. I wonder if it was filmed there.

So anyways.. If you get a chance, watch this movie if you are a Neve Cambell or Lifetime movie fan. Its a good pick and has a happy end to the story, as to all lifetime movies. Makes the day better knowing that there was a happy ending.

How to destroy a film using cliché's
niko-stolwijk30 December 2013
Warning: Spoilers
Others have commented on the film telling the storyline. I will not! I'm angry because the story could have been told much better and might have been a great success.

I just see the potential of the story behind it and it just did not take me away.

It contained a lot of cliché's.

a love story a culprit who was easy to detect by the viewer with a little bit of experience.

But what most bothered me as the amateuristic scenario suddenly the main character gets fired, no build up suddenly the main character starts to get into a relation not really professional.

Suddenly the side kick showed up (how did he know where she was) when she was digging.

etc etc

I thought professionals worked in Hollywood. this looks like good school project.

I'm angry because the story could have been told much better and might have been a great success.

Wonderful movie
mdoliner436 July 2022
A movie where people act well. Also the people are connected rather than being a bunch of strangers accidentally thrown together by chance. Someone actually thought that writing counted. Of course it is a tv movie. Otherwise it would have had executives mucking it up.

Wintess meets Fargo
screensavant17 August 2015
Warning: Spoilers
Not bad for a derivative work: the summary says it all. What do you get when you cross "Witness" with "Fargo" on Lifetime? I figured it out the second time I saw the culprit; so it is not really that much of a mystery. I did like her relationship to the Amish community, and I knew that the profiler would absolutely have to be overcome his phobia at the physical climax, but that's just the creaky dramaturgy. (I would really go for 2 1/2 * but that was not a choice.) It is acceptable on TV, but it is a good thing I did not have to spend multiplex prices to see it. It feels like a pilot for a series about a female ex-Amish police chief in a rural Ohio town.

Amish giallo?
BandSAboutMovies2 October 2018
Warning: Spoilers
Based on the novel Sworn to Silence by Linda Castillo, this movie was a backdoor pilot for further movies that was never picked up by the Lifetime Channel. And oh yeah - that leads me to the newest streaming service that we subscribe to: the Lifetime Movie Club. And you know my opinion on Lifetime: it's all giallo without the boobs and neon blood. This one even has a black gloved killer scene!

Originally airing January 6, 2013, this movie is all about Painters Mill, Ohio - not a real Ohio town as they often discuss things happening in Cincinnati, Youngstown and Dayton, all areas of the state that are far apart at the very least - where there's always been a divide between the townspeople and the Amish.

Katie Burkholder (Neve Campbell) knows all about it. Sixteen years ago, she survived the Slaughterhouse Murders that tore her town apart. As a result, she left her people and became a cop. Now, she's back in town as the chief of police, just in time for a copycat series of murders to begin. Yet Katie has secrets of her own that could destroy both her life and her lost family.

I watched this entire movie with recognizing Pony Boy himself, C. Thomas Howell. What a bad 80's kid I have grown up to be. Noam Jenkins from the Saw movies is in this as a big city cop, too. So is Linda Kash from Waiting for Guffman and Best in Show.

The end of this is pretty solid, with some real tension once the real killer is revealed.

Based on the Kate Burkholder books by Linda Castillo
gilliansl-868-52354526 January 2024
I have read the first half of this book series. There is so much that isn't in the movie, but it is a very good movie, well worth the watch.

Even better, the books are an excellent read and worth the time to read them. I lost my source to them in 2014, but she had one a year through 2023. If only more of them were translated into movies!

The characters are well done, and while not a lot is explained about the Amish community in the movie, the books do an excellent job of expanding understanding of this proud community.

The writer of this series, If I remember correctly is also an Amish person that left that community.

Not as good as the book! Really disappointed
kidsjack27 July 2021
Warning: Spoilers
I love Linda Castillo! So far on my second book Outsiders which is excellent suspense story! Love the Amish life as my grandma was Amish ! She was in Illinois and moved to Horseshoe Curve in Lancaster PA! She never really spoke about her Amish Life! Although she turned to a Englisher she wore Amish clothes and cooked Amish foods! Use to love her food snuck over house at 8 on my way home from school to eat! But the book was so much better and exciting nothing like the book some similarities!

If you're reading this review, it means I'm not writing it anymore
calebcalebwhitney19 January 2024
Warning: Spoilers
Back in the days before I got reformed I used to have some partners that were Amish. Not being from the US originally, I always pronounced it Ame-ish, rhyming with "flame-ish" and nobody ever corrected me, which is pretty funny. I respected those fellas though, because even though they are known for being religious, they got some very competent criminals. But this review is about the movie. I was disappointed they didn't focus more on the Amish criminal underground instead of wasting time on random murders that nobody cares about.

I didn't enjoy this movie much and I don't expect you will either. I got up a few times to make a some sandwiches to eat and to listen to some music and dance, but I didn't dislike the movie enough to turn it off, and eventually I came back to see the end, which I didn't enjoy except for the fire. It would have been nice to see the killer get burned to death, but the filmmaker robbed me of that pleasure and I need to check and see who he is so I don't watch anything else he's involved with.

Naaa. I say give this one a hard pass, but my advice will probably go unnoticed since it's unlikely you'll read this in the first place. So there's that.
