One of the better Anthologies I've seen lately.
destiny_west5 November 2022
I was a bit hesitant about watching this series at first as I have not had much luck finding decent horror anthologies besides Del Toro's Cabinet of Curiosities. By no means am I putting this series in that league. It's not, however I find each story that I watched entertaining enough, and production values and the acting was fairly decent.

I would have of course liked to see them more closely follow the urban legends they seem based off, instead of going a bit 'out there' with them. Which is especially the case of the 2nd one in the series.

However, they are watchable and kept me wanting to see what was happening next.

It's really not that bad but.....
averagebear8 January 2023
The plot holes are SO annoying. In. Every. Single. Episode. You could drive an ocean liner through the many plot holes! Sad thing is they aren't hard to fix but there's just no care or concern to do so on the part of any of the directors as evidenced in Roth's sit down and chat with them. Roth's insistence that each and every particular urban legend is the most well known and widespread gets tiresome and phony since I've lived a lot longer than he has and never heard of half of theses and the one I heard the most isn't even done or mentioned. The acting wasn't all bad (depends on the episode). The show is worth a watch and INFINITELY better than Two Sentence Horror Stories.

not my cup of tea

Very sordid series. The graphic tale was not one I care to view. Blood and a plot for money is so the thing now isn't it? Would love to see original stories Then at the end of the story was lackluster and topped off by a director chat about how he created this hour long piece.

Seems to me it could have been less graphic. It just copied most of the slasher movies from a few decades ago.

It would be nice to see some legends that are real but not explored and a bit more entertaining. Just my thoughts. Watch the next episode and share what you find interesting. This is my first and last gorefest.

Dull...
alucardvenom6 November 2022
I love urban legends, so I decided to give this one a try, despite being produced and created by "master" Eli Roth (arguably one of the worst well known horror directors)

While episodes were not directed by Eli, show has his prints all over them, starting with dull uninteresting direction, terrible pacing and dialogues that only Eli Roth can deliver.

So far I've seen two episodes, "The Red Room" and "The bite" and both were equally dull, boring and drawn out, in particular "The Bite" felt like I was watching two hour movie, when each episode is around 35 minutes long.

Acting is wooden and stiff, but this might be more related to poor direction, especially in "The Bite".

A bad imitation of Tales from the Crypt
cdeanroane11 November 2022
Eli Roth new show Urban Legend is just an so so imitation of Creep Show without the crypt keeper! I have watched the 3 shows that have aired and I was not really impressed by Eli Roth work on this show. As I have already stated this show would have blended right in with the current Creep Show that airs on Shudder! In some ways this show really needed the crypt keeper and his comments to open and close the shows to tie them up! I am confused as to what Eli Roth was trying to make with series, as it just does not catch one like Amazing Stories 1980's, Monsters 1980's' Tales from the Crypt 1990's, Twilight Zone 1960's, or The Outer Limits 1960's!

An Eli Roth styled/produced gore filled series that hits and misses, but overall entertains.
tresm8710 November 2022
Not exactly sure when Eli Roth signed some big contract with the travel channel or when the Travel Channel became paranormal and horror based as it is now. Either way this series is off to a promising start with some solid horror based subject matter. While a lot of it reminiscent to certain things we've seen before spliced with urban legend topics, it's executed passably and is rather enticing at times. There are a lot of scenes that have been taken from other movies but at this point it's hard not to have familiarity in 2022. I do like the Eli Roth interview with the Director at the end of each episode as it gives a nice aspect. I will definitely continue to see what other topics they touch on which is more than I can say for most series.

WHY CAN'T HE GET IT RIGHT?!!
booboolinx11 November 2022
Such a prolific producer of horror shows! Sad problem is, he puts out a lot of BORING garbage! I always start off with such high hopes and then I realize that it is just more of the same old uninteresting slop! I even go so far as DVRing his stuff, BUT I find it impossible to even get through half of a viewing! I usually end up erasing the recorded shows even before I begin to watch! Alas, but he is still young and I will continue to hope that he will one day put out something that is truly frightening and worth me spending time watching. It could happen. I am hopeful! I have not completely given up on Eli!

Satisfied viewer...
xxmisssvxx15 November 2022
I've always loved horror, whether it's your typical gore kind of horror, creepy horror, disturbing horror, or psychological horror. Horror has a broad range in its meaning for me in the sense that I view them from a "it can happen in real life" perspective.

Jumping into this series was enjoyable and I love mini horror shorts, anthologies that tell individual stories like visual book chapters. This started strong and keeps your attention throughout each episode, and the filmmaker discussion at the end of each anthology adds a perfect touch to the entire series. This is especially because I love taking deeper dives into how films are created, how a thought behind a project, a creature, a story becomes a film; and becomes bigger than what it began as.

Telling stories in artistic form, especially in filmmaking is amazing and I'm always here for it. I hope this series continues because you come to appreciate it for what it is.

You will enjoy it.

For Eli Roth, bloody horror and jump scare fans
rwrw-7381411 December 2022
I don't understand the low ratings and bad reviews in here as I found this tv series quite entertaining. I don't expect to watch a psychological horror movie from Eli Roth and won't expect too much escalating horror due to the limited lenth of a TV episode (about 50 mins). And I also don't expect to watch every episode with brand new and unique ideas, it is becasue this project is about turning some urban legends we've heard before into TV graphic horror, probably with a little new idea and a twist, but these new ideas and twists won't be deviated far from the original urban legends, same situation in "American horror stories" as well. If you like Eli Roth's movie, bloody horror and jump scare stuffs, you would enjoyed this TV series.

Tax Avoidance Scheme?
seven-johnson13 November 2022
Warning: Spoilers
It's the only reason I can think of why this was made at all... Anyhoo... I only watched the 1st episode, I'm not wasting my time on the rest.

Ok, it looks cheap, that's not the end of the world.

The acting's... how to... people are in this episode and they have dialogue and do stuff, it's like an imitation of acting.

The "plot" is like my grandmother's idea of what the internet is, but she watches tabloid news channels. IF Red Rooms exist - they're not going to be run this badly at all.

So, that's the episode, none of the mentioned elements do more than combine into less than the sum of their parts - it's not even so bad it's funny. Just a complete waste of time - and for something that runs ~40 minutes or so it really dragged. There were a couple of times I got up to do other stuff, had to rewind and... well, it's very easy to follow - even paying very little attention.

There's a bonus at the end - Eli interviews the "director". Now... I find Roth's work "variable", some things are better than others, but Eli Roth is a Director - he's not an interviewer and the tagged on awkwardness at the end is probably the most amusing, it's stilted and clumsy, but you can kind of laugh at this bit. I can't remember who the director was, but they have a website...

AND that's the point where the pieces all started to fit together... Does anyone remember the song "Friday" by Rebecca Black? It was basically a birthday present/package where you go to a studio and they make you a song and video and it's a fun experience and you get to bring your friends... For some reason "Friday" went viral - well done - but it's a thing, my mate's recording studio do a "birthday experience" for hire, same thing, make a song, get a video, be a "popstar" for a day and you get something to show for it.

Turns out, Eli Roth's doing it with horror episodes and streaming. Your milage may vary - Eli's is fixed rate.

Would recommend
just-g8328 November 2022
If you enjoy a slightly different spin on well known ghost stories, you'll probably enjoy this show. Is it the best thing ever? Nah but it's good and entertaining enough. Kind of surprised to see some negative reactions to it. It's a tv show on travel channel- I'm just glad it's still graphic-ish and not dumbed down.

The acting and production value is good. It kinda stretches on needlessly on occasion but the stories tend to keep a good pace. It sometimes feels like they're just trying to stretch it into a story that'll last the required length of a tv show. It might benefit from telling 2 stories per episode and getting to the point faster.

Episodes are hit or miss.
zumantyny31 December 2022
It was a good concept but there are so many urban legends they could have done. Unless they are making a season 2. Which I hope they do bad or good its still a fun watch. Some of these are 100x better than season 3 of creepshow even some of season 2 of creepshows were bad. It was weird though how eli had interviews with directors in first couple episodes then nothing till episode 8. Here's my opinion on the season.

The best episodes were... the choking doberman.

The red room.

The scuba diver.

Episodes just ok.... the bite the white dress the creep in the walls

the worst episodes the harvest the haunted shower.

How Eli Roth became such a "big" name in horror, I don't know
sbcxynkt6 August 2023
Warning: Spoilers
To give you an idea of what you are dealing with here, there is an episode about a haunted shower. If that was not lame enough, in this episode, it turns out the ghost was a victim of some type of hazing where he was locked in a shower where the water was scolding. Instead of just turning the shower head, this character just stands under the burning water screaming. Instead of taking off the giant freaking towel he was wearing and covering/shielding himself from the shower head, he just stands under the burning water screaming. This episode was half an hour long and felt like three hours and that's the problem. All of these stories are built to be YouTube shorts and they're tuned into half hour episodes that drag and ultimately crumble the longer they go on. Skip this.

Mediocre
grlym-468493 January 2023
So the first episode was pretty good. The season was oiled have been really good had they all been at least at this level.

But most episodes were really bizarre just for the sake of being bizarre. Most episodes could have been drastically cut down and no info would have been lost.

And being pointless seemed to be a theme. Which is what kept most all of it from being enjoyable in any fashion. The kharma aspect was very miss and very little hit. It's just random revenge but everyone's life is ruined. Even the innocent

The acting was was not great as well but that is to be expected d in most horror flicks.

Unbelievably bad!
michaeldecker18 December 2022
All the stories appear to be written by a ten year old, all the acting is amateurish, all the 'special effects' look like they were done on a 1994 PC - this is the cheapest, most dismal thing I've seen in years. It's like a High School production someone's thrown money at hoping something will stick.

I've got to add another 299 characters to this review for it to be published, which is 299 more characters than you'll see in (and I repeat) this horrible, terrible, dismal bit of cheap video masquerading as a TV series. Now there's just 79 characters left in which to tell you, again, just how utterly dismal this is...

Cheaper quality, project class - but still good
HorrorFilmHellion20 January 2023
Not a bad anthology series at all.. I would rate it on the same quality scale (maybe a little cheaper) as Shudder's Creepshow reboot, but definitely far below something like Del Toro's Cabinet of Curiosities. It's not as over-the-top woke as Creepshow, which is a good thing. For what it is, I was entertained throughout all 8 episodes, and hope it comes back for a second season. This has the feel that Eli Roth is taking on new young talent under his wings and giving them some creative license to do stuff.. (project class). Some works better than others, but it's all very watchable. Bring on season 2.

Mostly boring and bad
RandomTard4 February 2023
I was not impressed. Most of the episodes were just simply boring. There was maybe 2 episodes that were a bit better in atmosphere and story, but that wasn't nearly enough to carry the dead weight of the rest of the show.

The acting was not good but not horrible, mostly just weird. Stories had very little content which made them boring and felt prolonged. Production was clearly pretty cheap but not terrible.

Most of the episodes didn't really seem to me like an urban legends and those that did, were told very differently from the original - they added a lot of nonsense and boring stuff to fill the 40 something minutes.

I don't know why they haven't cancelled this show already.

Don't listen to others, this is a great TV show.
pseanpinto12 November 2022
I greatly enjoyed Urban Legends and find it a horrifying gore delicious fantastic fairy tales, that defines it's self from other horror TV shows. Watch it with a open mind and try not to think too hard and enjoy the show. I see greatness in this show's future and see it becoming prime time TV. I know I am trying to get six hundred characters so I hope this doesn't waste you're time. If you want to be disgusted and uncomfortable this is the show for you, I even can't watch this at night without eating popcorn and vomiting in my popcorn. This is a great great tale of horrors, out matched and superior to other shows on the travel channel.

The Only Urban Legend Here Should Be The Urban Legend To Not Watch This
soulcrisis2821 September 2023
Is it me or does this show just wreak of terrible, lazy, writing and acting? I mean, you've already got great, strong, foundations in the source material to build from and THIS is what they put out. Yep, that's pretty much what this is, already known and established Urban Legends with added monkey poo flung all over them to make them long enough to be individual episodes.

For example, episode 2, "The Bite" probably one of the most well known famous Urban Legends, where the spider bites your face and lays eggs in your cheek while doing so. Well, that only took up about 15 mins so what did they do? Ripped off the movie "The Fly" Jeff Goldblum version and made that the other 15 mins. Watch the episode and you'll see exactly what I'm talking about. Oh but it was horribly and poorly done and the actors were terrible on top of that.

Eli Roth is a played out one trick pony has been who never was and everything he keeps attaching his name to is proof in the pudding. It keeps sucking more and more and getting worse and worse.

If you're bored and can't find anything to watch, this might make some acceptable background noise why you do something else, you can give it a go and see if you end up liking it. TV, movies, music, art in general is subjective so what works for one person may not work for the next and vice versa.

My personal advice though is to skip it and find something better to watch, I assure you there's plenty to choose from.

So much missed potential!
vqhrgh11 December 2023
I started out watching this with no outside influence, no reviews or previews. I hadn't heard of it until I saw it on MAX and decided to try it out. The premise sounded interesting and somewhat reminded me of creepy pasta type stories from YouTube. Well the YouTube stories were better written than this. The first episode wasn't bad. Quite solid actually with many unexpected twists. Made me want to come back. The second episode was okay but I was constantly thinking, "Who would act like this in real life?" given their circumstances. The White Dress episode was just okay, but again very unrealistic acting. I skipped over the episode The Creep in the Walls. Snooze fest! I couldn't believe this came from Eli Roth. It definitely had Goosebumps vibes. Okay, next I went with The Harvest thinking we can't go wrong with organ harvesting, right? I ended up fast forwarding through the painfully drawn out and predictable scenes. But the acting was absolutely abhorrent! The main character was the most decent actor, but I felt rage watching the other actors literally just standing around like sims and talking like robots. I was just angry for wasting my time. Aaaaghhhh!!!

Urban Legends Are Always Interesting
irongrip-5992919 February 2023
Decent stories...awful acting. Cringe-worthy over-acting was definitely hard to sit through, but the stories were interesting enough to make up for it. Currently watching The Haunted Shower episode, and the bad acting reached a maximum for me, so felt compelled to write a review. Probably wouldn't recommend to watch for anyone who values their entertainment time (like me), however if you're just looking for something to watch to pass the time where you might just have it on in the background, would be the best way to watch this series. Of course, this is just my opinion. Anything is worth giving a shot, but I just wouldn't expect too much going in.

Disappointing

This series was disappointing. Each ending left me wanting more. Many of the stories had decent build-ups but the payoffs just felt non-existent or lacking. None of the episodes left a lasting impression.

Repeat for character count
