Chozen correctly removes his shoes before stepping onto the mat, but he leaves the shoes so that the toes point towards the mat. A Japanese person would never remove their shoes this way. The correct method is to turn away from the building, or mat in this case, and remove your shoes whilst stepping backwards into the building/mat. It is considered impolite to leave one's shoes pointing towards the inside. Usually this would be done at the genkan or boundary, but in a western building at the edge of the mat or dojo proper.
