Indian studio Applause Entertainment is gearing up for an ambitious slate of projects as it enters its eighth year of operations.

The company, led by managing director Sameer Nair, a pioneer of Indian television with previous stints at Star TV, Ndtv Imagine, Turner General Entertainment and Balaji Telefilms, has its sights set on expanding into new genres and formats while building on its established successes.

Leading the charge is “Nyaya,” a courtroom drama produced in association with Mangata Films. Directed by Nitya Mehra, Karan Kapadia and Heeraz Marfatia, the fictionalized series based on real events follows a 17-year-old girl seeking justice against a powerful ‘godman,’ or leader of a religious cult, who raped her. The project boasts a strong cast including Fatima Sana Sheikh, Aneet Padda, Arjun Mathur, Mohd. Zeeshan Ayyub and Raghubir Yadav.

Indian streamer SonyLIV has unveiled a slate of more than 20 new and returning shows for 2024 and is expanding its content focus.

2023 saw several hits bow on the service including “Scam 2003,” “Chamak,” Agatha Christie adaptation “Charlie Chopra & The Mystery Of Solang Valley” and “Fauda” remake “Tanaav,” which has been renewed for a second season, besides Season 2 of Emmy-nominated series “Rocket Boys.”

2024 will see shows in the Telugu, Tamil, Bengali, Punjabi and Marathi languages, in addition to Hindi. “We wanted to go with a very robust multi-language content lineup,” Danish Khan, executive VP and business head, SonyLIV and StudioNext at Sony Pictures Networks India, told Variety.

Bollywood actor-producer Arbaaz Khan, who was most recently seen in the streaming series ‘Tanaav’, is set to tie the knot once again. Arbaaz, who has been reportedly dating make-up artiste Shura Khan, is set to take the plunge and take their story forward.

As per a media report, Arbaaz and Shura will take the wedding vows in an intimate ceremony on December 24.

“Tanaav,” the Indian adaptation of the global hit thriller series “Fauda,” will return for a second season. India’s Applause Entertainment, the content studio of India’s Aditya Birla Group, has secured format rights to Season 2 from Israel’s Yes Studios.

Produced by Applause Entertainment, “Tanaav” successfully premiered on SonyLIV in November 2022. The series is transposed from Israel and Palestine to the troubled area that is Kashmir and tells the story of a Special Covert Ops Unit.

Yes, the Israeli network behind the show, reportedly unveiled plans for a new season of the show at an event earlier this week. Ilan Sigal, CEO of Yes, appeared on stage with co-creator Avi Issacharoff to confirm the news, according to several Israeli media outlets.

Fauda, which means ‘chaos’ in Arabic, became a huge international hit for Netflix after the streamer licensed the first four seasons of the show. It follows Doron, a commander in Israel’s Mista’arvim counter-intelligence unit, and regularly touches on the Israel-Palestine conflict.

It garnered significant viewing in countries such as Lebanon and cut through in Europe, Asia and the U.S. There have been several remakes, including in India where SonyLIV ordered Tanaav, a Hindi remake.

Season four launched last year and was expected to be the final run.

Israeli drama “Fauda” is returning for a fifth season, Variety can confirm.

Ilan Sigal, CEO of Israeli network Yes, revealed the news earlier this week, according to the Jerusalem Post. The newspaper reported that Sigal appeared alongside the show’s co-creator, Avi Issacharoff, at Yes’s annual “Bar Series” event to share the news.

Netflix streams “Fauda” internationally. The fourth season of the show, which was also meant to be the last, released earlier this year.

According to Israeli publication Ynet, “Fauda” was picked up for a fifth season following protracted negotiations between the network and the creators. No details have been confirmed in terms of the season’s plot or when it might air.

Issacharoff, an Israeli journalist, developed the hit series alongside the show’s star Lior Raz almost 10 years ago. It first premiered in 2015, telling the story of Doron (played by Raz), a commander in the Israeli army.

“Black Warrant” is based on the bestselling book “Black Warrant: Confessions Of A Tihar Jailer,” by prison officer Sunil Gupta and Sunetra Choudhury, a journalist with vast experience of chronicling India’s prison system. Delhi’s Tihar is India’s best-known prison.

A black warrant is a jailer’s authorization to carry out the execution of a convicted criminal. The series will benefit from Gupta’s insider knowledge of the prison. India’s Reliance Entertainment, a producer on Steven Spielberg’s “The Fabelmans,” has pacted with T-Series and Anubhav Sinha’s Benaras Mediaworks to distribute Sudhir Mishra’s “Afwaah,” Sinha’s “Bheed” and Hansal Mehta’s “Faraaz” internationally.

First up is Mehta’s hostage drama “Faraaz,” starring Zahan Kapoor, Aditya Rawal, Juhi Babbar Soni, which releases Feb. 3. The film, which had its world premiere at the BFI London Film Festival, unfolds over one night and is based on an incident in July 2016, where armed gunmen held up customers at the Holey Artisan Bakery, in Dhaka, Bangladesh, for 12 hours, before killing 20 of them and two of the bakery staff.

Bangladeshi auteur Mostofa Sarwar Farooki’s “Saturday Afternoon,” based on the same incident, was recently cleared for release after a four-year struggle with the Bangladesh Film Censor Board.

He said: “Working styles in the industry these days have changed drastically and for good. My career is a living example of the same. Since 2017, I have indulged in many projects and had the opportunity to work on various stories with numerous artists. Nowadays, it is not a compulsion to cast according to others’ recommendations but have the liberty to cast according to the demand of the story.”

She said: “I wanted to work in this series as I got to play a simple Kashmiri Muslim woman, a very different character from what I have done before. Everybody had a different perception about me that I don’t speak Hindi and I am an Nri whereas the truth is I’m born and brought up in Goa.”

Bollywood actor Arbaaz Khan, who turned producer with Salman Khan-starrer ‘Dabangg’, has started the shoot for his film ‘Patna Shukla’ in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh. Actor Arryaman Seth, who plays a young Kashmiri, deeply affected by the socio-political shifts around him in the recently released streaming show ‘Tanaav’, shares that he didn’t eat anything for straight two days to lend authenticity to a particular scene in the show where his character was kept without food.

Veteran Indian filmmaker Sudhir Mishra’s latest venture is “Tanaav,” the Indian adaptation of Israeli global hit “Fauda.” The series is transposed from Israel and Palestine to the troubled area that is Kashmir and tells the story of a Special Covert Ops Unit.

” ‘Fauda’ is about two countries, Israel and Palestine and it is about two religions. We didn’t want to do that. This is not about religion. This is not about Hindu versus Muslim. This is India versus, let’s say, terrorism or another kind of extreme ideology,” Mishra told Variety.

About the decision to set it in Kashmir, Mishra says that the series needed to be in a “disturbed zone” and that he’s been familiar with Kashmir for years and tried to move away from the cliched representation of the state and treated it in a “nuanced, interesting way.”
