“Season three” of Bama Rush is shaping up as an epic chapter of a prominent TikTok tradition. With Bid Day coming up on August 20, prospective sorority sisters at the University of Alabama are becoming overnight sensations thanks to their short-form videos.
Bama Rush took hold as a social media phenomenon in 2021, collecting more than three billion views across TikTok. The #RushTok hashtag has pulled in more than 1.5 billion TikTok views on its own, and the University of Alabama is the inarguable epicenter of that community. Each August, Potential New Members (PNMs) arrive in Tuscaloosa and take the internet by storm by sharing their “outfits of the day” and discussing the items in their “rush bags.”
The 2023 edition of Bama Rush kicked off on August 12, when the houses on sorority row opened their doors and began screening PNMs. Skylar Ehlinger and Bella Reaves have emerged as two of the first-year standouts,...

Vice Studios had a new hit on its hands with the late May launch of “Bama Rush,” which the studio’s co-founder and chief content officer Danny Gabai says was Max’s most-streamed doc feature debut.
But with that large viewership also came a significant discourse surrounding the extent to which “Bama Rush” director Rachel Fleit is present in her own doc about college students “rushing” to get into the sororities at the University of Alabama. That choice didn’t sit well with people who avidly followed the #BamaRush phenomenon that first swept TikTok in the summer of 2021 and again last “season” and would have preferred more behind-the-scenes content about the rush process, rather than portions devoted to Fleit’s reaction to the situation.
“In making any content, you have to make directorial and authorial choices,” Gabai told Variety. “And very early on, we saw young women were revealing that...

Amid the pending fate of its co-parent company Vice Media Group, Vice TV is focusing on its latest season of “Dark Side of the Ring,” and Vice Studios-produced projects recently launched on other platforms, including “American Gladiators” on ESPN, “Bama Rush” at Max, and “100 Days to Indy” at the CW network.
It’s also looking to the future, ordering second seasons of “Dark Side of Comedy” and “Sex Before the Internet” and greenlighting new series “Dark Side of the 2000s” for its own cable channel, in addition to moving Vice web series “One Star Reviews” to linear.
As Vice’s president of global TV, Morgan Hertzan, put it, the Vice TV network — which is part owned by A+E Networks — is “very, very busy” right now.
“The parts of the business that I oversee are doing really well,” Hertzan told Variety. “And I have to say, our partners through...

After the University of Alabama rush went viral on TikTok, a film-maker followed four young women seeking admittance
In the realm of TikTok trends turned into mass cultural reality shows, few have captured attention quite like Alabama rush. For weeks in August 2021, TikTok was awash in content about the intense, highly scrutinized and anticipated process of sorority recruitment: daily “OOTDs” (outfits of the day), rush recap videos from freshly tanned and coiffed prospective new members (PNMs), and reactions to 18-year-old girls either elated or devastated by the high-stakes game of likability that is rush.
The same process in August 2022, referred to by many as “Bama Rush season 2”, was as much a hit as season 1 – the top 5 Pnm TikTok users garnered 110m views for their videos, with individual ones surpassing even the most-watched episodes of Keeping Up With the Kardashians. But the attention had sororities wary. The New York Times reported...

The Bama Rush sensation, which took over millions of TikTok users’ FYPs two years ago, has rushed its way to streaming. The highly anticipated documentary “Bama Rush” is finally out on Max (formerly HBO Max), detailing the intense sorority recruitment week at the University of Alabama.
The film follows four young women — PNMs (Prospective New Members) for short — as they embark on the intimidating Greek life process during their first year of college. In the doc, we see them balance the process of choosing those fateful three Greek letters with the excitement and anxiety of finding themselves during this new chapter of their lives.
“This film is a thoughtful and compassionate portrayal of young women in 2022 as they rush the sorority system at the University of Alabama,” Fleit said in a statement via Vice,...

This morning, Warner Bros. Discovery officially transformed HBO Max into Max.
The rebranded and refreshed streaming service, which was first unveiled in April at an event on the company’s Burbank lot, features a slate of new original programming (known as Max Originals) and an updated user interface that includes content hubs for HBO and HGTV.
The transition began rolling out late in the evening on Monday and early Tuesday, which did result in a small spike of user issues reported on Down Detector in the early hours around 4 a.m. to 7 a.m. The rollout is expected to continue into Tuesday across the U.S.
HBO Max subscribers don’t need to do anything to transition
To ease the transition, most existing HBO Max subscribers will see their HBO Max apps automatically update to the Max app, though a few users will be prompted to download the app. Existing...

After more than a year of fanfare caused by the 2022 merger of Warner Bros. and Discovery, David Zaslav’s Wbd has finally launched Max. Branded as “the one to watch,” the new streaming service combines the offerings of HBO Max and Discovery+ into one platform.
In April, Wbd held an event announcing the name, launch date, ethos and next steps of the brand. Along with unveiling flashy (and controversial) plans like a new “Harry Potter” series, company execs also explained the decision to drop the prestigious HBO name from the title of the service: In short, they want to be clear that the acclaimed but certainly adult-leaning programming HBO is famous for is only a portion of the content available on Max.
“Warner Bros. Discovery has some of the best-known kids’ characters, animation and brands in the industry. Not surprisingly, the category has not met his true potential on HBO Max,...

For a variety of reasons, Bama Rush could never actually document sorority recruitment. Directed by Rachel Fleit, Max's new documentary centers on a group of young women preparing for rush at the University of Alabama in August 2022, one year after "Bama Rush" became a viral sensation on TikTok. Fleit followed the "potential new members" — two already enrolled at Alabama, and two seniors in high school — for 10 months as they picked out perfect outfits, polished their resumes, and mentally prepared for the grueling experience of finding their sisterhood, but when it came time for the doors of each sorority house to open, the cameras were shut out. One subject, Shelby, even stopped filming after false rumors emerged on social media (and were later publicized by the New York Times) about producers surreptitiously recording inside houses during recruitment events.

Max has shared the trailer for its upcoming documentary “Bama Rush,” which follows the social media phenomenon that grew out of University of Alabama students documenting their sorority recruitment experience.
The feature length documentary will premiere on Warner Bros. Discovery’s merged HBO Max-Discovery+ streaming platform Max on May 23.
In August of 2021, thousands of young women embarked on the long-held tradition of sorority recruitment (a.k.a rush week), but at the University of Alabama, the incoming students filmed a variety of TikTok videos with the hashtag “Bama Rush.”
Prospective sorority sisters posed for their “Get Ready With Me” videos, “Fit-checks” and updates on whether or not they made it to the next round, while sorority sisters documented the behind the scenes, showing how the 19 houses prepare for over 2,500 girls to walk through their doors that week. Their footage provided — both those familiar and unfamiliar — a peek into the week-long...
