Deadly Friend Death by Basketball
by Mike Hassler
Deadly Friend is not a good movie. At all. Wes Craven’s really hit or miss, in case you didn’t already realize this — for every Last House on the Left there’s a Vampire in Brooklyn, and for a Nightmare on Elm Street there’s a Shocker. His 1986 cheese-tastic gem Deadly Friend is quite a fun watch just for it’s terrible nature. The preposterous plot is of a young man implanting a computer chip into the girl next door’s brain which then gives her superpowers and causes her to go homicidal. The best moment? When our cybernetically altered hottie Samantha (Kristy Swanson) chucks a basketball at Anne “Mama” Ramsey’s head, which literally...

It's been quite a while since Shiney Ahuja was last seen on the silver screen, with his last release being Ghost. His career came crashing down after he was accused of raping his maid. Just as one thought that all was over for Shiney, help came (very unexpectedly) in the form of Anees Bazmee, who has now signed him for a funny but an important role in his multi-starrer film Welcome Back. Speaking about Shiney, Bazmee said that he has signed Shiney for Welcome Back for a very funny role and that they we are kicked about teaming up with him. He said that he is not worried about anything as his schedules will be wrapped up really soon and that the film will be up for release in December 2014. He also wondered as to why the Bhatts dropped him (Shiney) as their production house was like a second home to him.

A Separation (Sony) This drama from Iran won the 2011 Best Foreign Film Oscar, telling the story of a couple who file for a legal separation, with the wife pushing for a divorce. He won’t leave his Alzheimer’s-afflicted father behind, while she is wanting to take their young daughter with her to the United States. After a series of misunderstandings, threats and legal actions, the couple find that there is more than just their marriage that’s on the line. Hyper-realistic to a fault, reminiscent of the neo-realist films that came out of post-ww II Europe, but also repressive and redundant in the extreme, with the characters seeming to throw the same temper tantrum for two hours straight while the story, meanwhile, seems stalled. Wildly overpraised film is a real litmus test, with viewers seeming to be staunch defenders or equally impassioned detractors. It did win an Oscar,...

There was a mad crush of premieres this week on Broadway — seven in all, vying to open just under the eligibility wire for this June’s Tony Awards. (Nominations will be announced Tuesday, May 1.) It’s been a surprisingly deep year in each of the four major categories (play, play revival, musical, musical revival).
• A Streetcar Named Desire Despite the occasional jarring moments in director Emily Mann’s revival of Tennessee Williams’ drama — which features TV stars Blair Underwood (The Event) as Stanley and Nicole Ari Parker (Soul Food) as Blanche DuBois — EW critic Lisa Schwarzbaum found the production “still...

Mumbai, Feb 26: While one of his good friends Anurag Basu is re-adjusting things yet Shiney Ahuja is rather uncomfortable in any public meeting, long after his super-flop film Ghost. His failure story in fact made the actor to confine himself in his house only. He was not seen in any of the public appearances for a long time. By the way, Anurag Basu arranges a Saraswati Puja every year in his residence organized by Anurag and his friend Pritam Chakraborty professionally a composer living in that house only. Out of the presented people, there were many friends, neighbours and relations of Anurag.
Suddenly they were thunderstruck seeing.

Trying to cash in on the Friday 13th legend, Bharat Shah released his horror saga Ghost this Friday. Directed by Puja Jatinder Bedi, it stars Shiney Ahuja (his first movie after the scandal) and Sayali Bhagat.
Frankly speaking, that’s all you really should know about the movie. This silly hotchpotch doesn’t even have a decent story to its credit. The writer tries to add religion, revenge, suspense and what not and fails miserably. After the beginning credits itself you realize that it was a bad move to decide to watch this movie (or maybe, like the movie says, it is Gods punishment for your sins). We have a nurse performing an item song to a doctor, we have the female lead Dr Suhani (Sayali) who appears least bothered about the murders of her colleagues and keeps on asking the investigating office (Shiney) to take a break from solving the case and have coffee.
