“Dorothy Kilgallen was the first female crime reporter in America. She was the only woman to ever cover the JFK case. The only reporter to speak with Jack Ruby.

A new week has arrived and with it comes a few new movies and shows to Netflix. The new additions to the lineup include a new adventure drama series, a new horror movie, and a new documentary. While there aren't a ton of new things coming to the streaming service this week, there might be something you're interested in.
First up this week is Territory. The new show hits Netflix on Thursday, Oct. 24, 2024 and stars Anna Torv, Jay Ryan, Robert Taylor, and Sara Wiseman. The show follows the drama at the Lawson family cattle station, which has been left without an heir. With the family unsure what to do next, multiple Australian factions fight it out to see who will win the land and if it will finally be the end of the Lawson dynasty. This is giving Yellowstone vibes but down under.

DreamWorks’ latest animated feature, The Wild Robot, has been received extremely well by both critics and audiences. As of the writing of this article, the movie scores a 98% on both critical and audience scores.
Unfortunately, the praise doesn’t translate to box office success. In its nearly four weeks in theaters, the film has earned just over $152 million against a $78 million budget. The movie has nearly crossed the break-even point, however, it wasn’t very well advertised, meaning that Universal probably didn’t see it as a priority compared to established IPs such as Kung Fu Panda 4 from earlier this year.
While the movie isn’t a huge moneymaker like some other DreamWorks films, it has since gained a cult following, with multiple pieces of fan art from talented creators being made.

Dallas isn’t just one of the most populated Texas cities and home to a thriving diverse populace — it’s also now a massive theatrical moviegoing hub. According to ComScore, Dallas-Fort Worth was the third-biggest market in America in 2023, only behind Los Angeles and New York City. This former trading post helped deliver over $271 million the year of Barbenheimer, or 3% of the entire domestic box office market.
The history of this market’s movie theaters stretches back to the 1910s. This is when locations like The Washington Theatre and the Grand Central Theatre dazzled patrons. Dfw has always housed passionate moviegoers, so it’s no wonder it wormed its way into key parts of cinema history. Most notably, Dallas housed a legendarily successful test screening for “Jaws.” However, it would’ve been unthinkable for Dfw to become a go-to moviegoing destination. After all, until 1993, Dallas housed the last local film censorship board in America.

In the 23 years since the Best Animated Feature category was introduced at the Oscars, Pixar has dominated, racking up an impressive 11 wins from 18 nominations; its last victory was in 2021 for “Soul.” Walt Disney Studios has four trophies to show for its lucky 13 nominations while DreamWorks has gone 2 for 14, including the first-ever Oscar awarded for Best Animated Feature, which went to “Shrek.” Studio Ghibli also has a pair of prizes, and is the reigning champ with “The Boy and the Heron.” (Scroll down for the most up-to-date 2025 Oscar predictions for Best Animated Feature.)
That marked the second win for Japanese auteur Hayao Miyazaki, who had prevailed for “Spirited Away” 22 years earlier. Miyazaki crafted the only two hand-drawn movies to win this race. Two stop-motion flicks — “Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit” and “Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio” — have prevailed. The other 19 winners were all done with CGI.

Anything and everything to do with the Hollywood revolution starts with George Lucas and Star Wars. The visionary director and certified genius from whose imagination the galactic empire was conceived took a lot of impossible leaps to make his dream a reality. Among those leaps were the foundation of Industrial Light & Magic and eventually, Pixar.

As has been the case for the past few months, any weekend with just one or two wide releases is then followed by a weekend with way too many movies, and this weekend seems to be one of the latter. It's only been a couple of weekends but it's already safe to say that Tim Burton's "Beetlejuice Beetlejuice" is one of the biggest box office hits of the year — at least in North America anyhow. The long-awaited sequel to Burton's 1988 classic has been well over three decades in the making. It's crystal clear that everything came together at the right time as audiences have been flocking to theaters to see the Beetlejuice and the Deetz family reunited after all this time. So much so that the sequel is already one of the ten biggest domestic hits of 2024.
"Beetlejuice Beetlejuice" took in an estimated $51.6 million domestically on its second weekend, which was more than enough to top the charts. That represents a 53% drop compared to the film's opening weekend, which was a stellar $111 million, making it one of the biggest openings of 2024 thus far. Reviews were good. Word of mouth has been good.

While the world takes a break from Po after the release of Kung Fu Panda 4, Jackie Chan is ready to pick up the bamboo torch with Panda Plan, an upcoming action film starring the legendary martial artist in what looks like a family-friendly, animal cruelty-free flurry of fists and fur. Today’s Panda Plan trailer finds the 70-year-old Chan playing a version of himself alongside a panda bear co-star, with mercenaries and madcap comedy along for the wild ride.
Chinese filmmaker Zhang Luan directed Panda Plan from a script he co-wrote with Meng Yida and Wei Xu. In the Panda Plan trailer, a rare panda with a dark circle under one eye becomes a worldwide sensation when he’s born at China’s Noah Zoo. However, when a Middle Eastern tycoon fancies the panda, he sends international mercenaries to kidnap the zoo’s new embarrassment of pandas. Chan, playing a version of himself,...

Pixar has been having quite the summer with Inside Out 2, bringing the animation juggernaut back into the limelight after what had been a lukewarm run with a slew of great films. However, it seems that 2024 is shaping up to be quite the brawl for animation giants, as DreamWorks is gearing up to release what seems to be the next animation event of the year.

Peter Brown’s The Wild Robot has been adapted by DreamWorks, with its release date right around the corner. Equal parts Wall-e and The Iron Giant, the film boasts a star-studded cast with heavy hitters like Lupita Nyong’o, Pedro Pascal, Mark Hamill, Catherine O’Hara, and Bill Nighy. Given the talent that is behind the film and the critic’s score that it has managed to garner, it seems that The Wild Robot might be on its way to...

When Disney released its new version of “The Lion King” in 2019, the company was quick to describe it as the live-action version of the beloved 1994 original.
Director Jon Favreau, who made a Christmas classic in “Elf” and jumpstarted the Marvel Cinematic Universe with “Iron Man,” was covered by the Directors Guild of America, which afforded him insurance and incentives, along with profit participation. One reported estimate had the director earning $60 million from his involvement in the film, which grossed $1.66 billion worldwide.
But this version of “The Lion King” wasn’t live-action — it was fully animated. And directors of animated films are not traditionally covered by the DGA, hence the push to categorize this feature as “live-action.”
The DGA has long kept animation directors out of the guild. And the chasm between the benefits afforded to live-action directors and animation directors is a growing source of frustration within the filmmaking community.

Dreamworks Animation is pulling no punches with the trailer for The Wild Robot. Here’s the trailer for the incoming movie.
The Wild Robot is set to be the last feature to be fully animated in-house over at DreamWorks Animation. Once the film has released, the studio behind Shrek and How To Train Your Dragon will instead be outsourcing good chunks of its work..
Dreamworks Animation has produced some of the most beloved aniated films of the last few decades and they’ve also been on a really good run of late. Last year’s Puss In Boots: The Last Wish was a raging success whilst Kung Fu Panda 4 performed really well commercially. The new trailer leans into the studio’s past successes and we’re hoping that The Wild Robot serves as a fitting swansong to Dreamworks Animation’s entirely in-house line of successful and beloved works.

Once upon a time, in the magical land of Hollywood, a movie about the globally popular video game "Minecraft" was being made. Inspired perhaps by the success of "The Lego Movie," which took the rather simple block toys of childhood and created a cinematic miracle that made more than $468 million at the worldwide box office, Mojang Studios started looking at turning its own popular building-block game into a blockbuster movie. But who to helm it? "The Lego Movie" had Chris Miller and Phil Lord of "Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs" and "21 Jump Street" fame, and "Minecraft" needed someone with similar comedy chops.

The new A Minecraft Movie trailer is out and fans cannot stop dissing on it. The film which stars Jack Black, Jason Momoa, and Emma Myers among others, received flack for its CGI. Many have criticized the VFX, calling it outdated, and have spoken out against the design of the film.
However, one of the biggest criticisms the teaser received was Jack Black’s appearance as Steve. Many pointed out that he looked nothing like the beloved character and that they just asked him to put on a blue shirt and be himself. Black, however, has previously claimed to have extensively prepared himself for the role by playing the game for months.
