This film reminded me why I like Tyler Hynes so much!
cgvsluis5 December 2022
Unquestionably, Tyler Hynes holds down this second chance holiday romance which is the latest in Blake Shelton and his mom's Time to come home for Christmas series (2022). It started with a song and then a book written by his mom and has lead to a mother-son annual Christmas movie collaboration, which is sweet and everything Christmas should be.

This may be my favorite in the series, in large part thanks to the two leads Tyler Hynes and Holland Rolland (it was great to see Teen Wolf's Lydia in a new project). The story was very tightly written and intertwines two overlapping second chance romances. Also, it reminded me why I like Tyler Hynes so much. He is fantastic and was an excellent choice for this film. He and Holland Roland have excellent chemistry together and really make the romance and misunderstanding work in this film.

Elizabeth Athens (Holland Roland) receives a voicemail by mistake. The caller's voice is filled with regret and is clearly desperate to reconnect with a woman named Madeline. Unfortunately, the call was placed from a local hotel and without even a name to go by...Elizabeth embarks on a very interesting search for a mystery woman named Madeline or for the caller who left the message. Having wanted to be an investigative reporter in the past, Elizabeth is joined by her friend Josh Hart (Tyler Hynes) who is back in town for the holidays and who has a secret regret of his own. The story is filled with loss, regret, forgiveness, second chances and most importantly with love. Unlike some of the other holiday films that Hallmark rolled out this year...this film is able to navigate the tricky landscape of being about a sad topic and yet still filling the story with enough hope and love that it does not turn into a maudlin and morose story. Instead it is a beautiful holiday love story that I can highly recommend to all those romantics like me out there!

Now for my one rant...skip if you are uninterested: As a native Seattle girl, I was excited to hear that this year's film would be set in Seattle...but I was once again utterly disappointed that it contained nothing but a couple of aerial shots of Seattle and was filmed somewhere else with ZERO local flavor. I would never presume to set a story in Oklahoma and then proceed to not do ANY research or include ANY local detail in my story. Believe it or not, Seattle is gorgeous at Christmas (in fact it is a beautiful winter wonderland right now in my backyard...with big snowflakes drifting down all amongst the evergreens giving our world the appearance of being inside a snow globe) and it is rich with lots and lots of holiday traditions...Pike Place Market, Figgy Pudding Caroling Contest, the glorious Bon Marche Star, and yes, we have some gorgeous hotels and some great and famous confectioners old and new. Frankly, like most true northwesterners, I am happy to keep our treasures a secret...I just wish film makers, particularly those in the Hallmark stable, would stop fake-setting their films in Seattle. Stick with what you know. (And that is clearly not Seattle.)

A double mystery
VetteRanger1 December 2022
Warning: Spoilers
A few movies stand out by not checking all the common cliche boxes, and this is one of them.

Now, I'll have to say the mistake which kicks off the story is somewhat questionable, because a man has two pieces of paper, each with a phone number but no name noted by it. So he leaves a message for the wrong person with the wrong phone number, starting a search which is our story for the entire movie. Having the two bare numbers with no names doesn't ring true for me.

The second mystery is what happened to our romantic leads three years ago which caused a split they both seem bitter about. Well, that one DOES check one of the cliche boxes ... the misunderstood overheard conversation.

The story is melancholy, but the actors all sell their roles well and it kept our interest.

My only other gripe is all the flashbacks. They really do interrupt the "current day story" far too often. We authors learn early to avoid flashbacks and too much backstory, and screenwriters need to learn the same lesson.

But overall, an enjoyable movie, as evidenced by my 8 stars, and well worth your time.

Just spit it out already
MickyG33310 December 2022
Warning: Spoilers
7.0 stars.

Three best friends are in a love triangle of sorts. Our lead male overhears our lead female say to the other guy that she's in love. He assumes she loves the other guy, but she's actually in love with him. With sadness and disappointment, he decides to leave forever, and this starts a chain of tragic events.

He returns years later. They are both still very much in love with each other, but don't realize it. Their assumptions are so deeply rooted, they cannot see through all the obvious signals.

As family and friends gather for the holidays and our two leads partake in a mini-mystery they have multiple opportunities to recognize their love. Most of the movie is spent on them trying to help a stranger find his long lost love. In the process, they fumble around and mess up their own relationship.

This film made me physically sic: the misread signals, the assumptions, and the unrequited love that needs not be. Then you have the meddling mother (his) who comes out of nowhere and is painfully irritating. The sister (his) who gives sage advice and doesn't follow through to make sure it is heeded. The leading female's mother is actually pretty cool, I like her a lot; he is smart and sophisticated.

There are too many unnecessary flops. If one person in this long chain of friends and family would make one intelligent decision, or observation none of this train wreck would have happened.

Finally the mystery unravels and we discover that it was much deeper than we realized. The ending is very touching and heartfelt.

I love the the script, the acting, the lighting, music, everything. I hate the story. Why? Because it's just sad and disappointing. It's a commentary on how polished the movie is, and so I must give it a good rating for that alone. Entertaining? Yes. Maddening? Yes. The leads have good chemistry, the longing stares, the awkward behavior, they are madly in love with each other and are reading the body language and signals as disgust and loathing? What is wrong with people? Does this happen in real life? Just have an honest conversation already, because you are best friends, right? Why are people so afraid of saying: "Hey, I know you might be uncomfortable and we are best friends, but I'm in love with you. If that means the friendship is over, I guess that's the price we must pay."

Best Hallmark Movie this year
rann_rushing28 November 2022
This past year, Hallmark movies have been very disappointing. The writers just have not been able to get out of their own way, continually falling back on tired stories and too often used tropes. There were two different stories that were intertwined, both revolving around lost love. Tyler Hynes, a longtime Hallmark leading actor was paired with Holland Roden, an excellent addition to the Hallmark family. Elizabeth (Roden) receives a voicemail that was intended for Madelyn (Meghan Gardiner), which was from Madelyn's former boyfriend, Carter (Steve Bacic). Elizabeth teams up with longtime friend Josh (Hynes) to try to find Madelyn. The acting was excellent and the way the writers tied together the two stories kept my interest throughout.

Love, love, love this movie. Tyler Hynes is so talented.
joie-8233627 November 2022
I've been watching Tyler Hynes for a few years now on Hallmark and he is wonderful in all of them. He is so down to earth and so talented and I literally enjoy all of his movies and I make sure I catch them all. (He could be my son, lol, I adore him.) This past week, his performances in "Three Wise Men and a Baby" and the one I just watched "Time for Him to Come Home for Christmas" were fantastic and touched my heart. His co-star in tonight's movie was excellent as well.

The subject matter was different and so touching and so true, everyone deserves a second chance.

Tyler you did it again. Happy holidays to all!

Reasonably good Hallmark movie
herrcarter-9216128 August 2023
Warning: Spoilers
I liked this movie, though I wouldn't say I loved it as much as many apparently did. You had a decent story and a somewhat compelling mystery. You wondered how they would ever track down the mystery phone caller and his long lost love Madelyn, and they kept you guessing till the end.

The performances were pretty good. I liked Holland Roden as Elizabeth. She was warm, engaging and likable. Tyler Hynes as Josh was just okay. I know he is one of Hallmark's top leading men, but I never thought he was that great. In this movie, he seemed too subdued and he lacked a certain charisma. It also annoyed me how he tended to slur his words and swallow his syllables. I felt like I needed closed captioning to know what he was even saying at times.

My big problem with this movie was that the whole plot relied on stupid actions by the characters and unrealistic plot points. First off, our mystery man leaves a message on our heroine Elizabeth's phone, proposing a reunion with his long-lost love Madelyn, thinking the number is hers. Wouldn't her voicemail normally say, "This is Elizabeth", in which case, he would know it was a wrong number? He calls on the hotel phone instead of his cell phone. Who does that these days? He doesn't leave a callback number. He doesn't even leave his name, just assuming that, after 3 years, Madelyn will know who he is. He also just leaves things up in the air, saying he will meet in "our spot", assuming she will know where he is talking about. Any normal guy wouldn't have just assumed he was leaving voicemail on the right phone. He would have tried time and time again until he talked to the girl in person.

Then, there's the silly miscommunication where Elizabeth was telling her friend Andrew about her romantic feelings for Josh, and he just assumes she is actually in love with Andrew. You know that's what's going on from the start, and them dragging the thing out till the bitter end just seems contrived.

Finally, there's the guilt that the mystery man Carter carried around for years because of the accident that killed Elizabeth's friend Andrew. This guilt apparently even caused his relationship with his old flame Madelyn to fail. But why should he feel so guilty about hitting a patch of ice and sliding into another car? It's really a stretch for him to feel so guilty about something that's so clearly out of his control.

If you can suspend your disbelief about the above absurd plot points, this is a pretty good movie. The characters seem real and genuine and the dialog is pretty natural. The plot sucks you in, and you want to know the answer to the mystery, and you also want Elizabeth and Josh to finally stop with the pretense of being "friends" and just get together as a couple already. Ninety percent of Hallmark movie fans will come away from this movie more than satisfied.

A Romantic Mystery
atlasmb30 November 2022
I watch "The Voice" and I find Blake Shelton to be the funniest part of that show. When I heard that he and his mother were responsible for this Hallmark holiday film, I made a point of checking it out. I was not disappointed.

If you are a fan of Hallmark films, this one will seem fairly conventional in the early going. A young woman (Holland Roden) confronts difficult feelings every Christmas, due to past events. This holiday is different, because she becomes involved in a search to solve a romantic mystery. She is assisted by an old friend (Tyler Hynes) who had dropped out of her life years ago.

Together they go on a quest that causes old feelings to re-emerge. But there is more to this story, which is actually a tale of two relationships. Stick around for the final act, because it delivers a narrative surprise and packs an emotional wallop.

The entire cast is good, but Holland Roden has the meatiest role and is the emotional linchpin of the story. She displays a range of emotions and convincingly anchors the complicated but enjoyable storyline.

Very convoluted story
hallmarkmov5 July 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Similar to the last time for blah blah blah to come home for Christmas the story has so many plot lines and dead ends. The story unfolds like a mystery, going backwards and forwards, jumps between characters, and you have to work hard to put these stories together in a clear order. It kind of tried to be like Godwink but failed. It became exhausting after a while trying to keep up with the story that when the ending is revealed to all be connected you lose interest. The actors all played their characters well but the story was just all over the place and the way it was shot and edited was not the best. I can see why this movie wasn't replayed over and over. The "misunderstanding" was very obvious and anti climatic after all the crazy mixed phone numbers, running around a Christmas market, a snowstorm that was supposed to come and closed the market early they didn't happen, well there was fake digital snowflakes. Is the singer famous? Someone Blake Sheldon is trying to promote? She seemed so random but does have a nice voice. Maybe she was on team Blake or something. Won't rewatch.

2 winners for Tyler in 22
mbiv77730 November 2022
This role is much more dramatic than the Three brothers movie.

Holland Roden is excellent as the woman who receives a heartfelt message in her voicemail that is actually meant for someone else, so she decides to track down the recipient.

Roden looks so familiar, but I don't recognize anything in her bio. Maybe a commercial?

She has great chemistry with Hynes, and they both show some fine dramatic acting chops. There is also time for some funny moments as well, which is what he is mote known for.

I would be remiss not to mention the performance by Steve Bacic. He is usually the smarmy guy you don't want to see the leading lady end up with.

Here he shows he can handle a dramatic role with skill.

They play the same song at the end as Time for ME to come home. I still hate that song, but this is an excellent movie, and I recommend it highly.

Time for Him to Come Home for Christmas
studioAT18 December 2023
Hallmark go for something different, and lean on perhaps their greatest male asset in the form of Tyler Hynes in order to get it over the line.

And he succeeds. Full of charm and warmth, he has a delivery that makes even the most cheesy of lines palatable.

This story has a bit more depth to it than the normal outing too, and it all plays out rather well.

When you don't totally know where a Hallmark film is going that has to be a plus, such is the rigidness of their formatting sometimes.

Overall, this was an enjoyable film, and hopefully Tyler Hynes can appear in many more of this quality moving forward.

Two stories converge in a great sappy collision
Jackbv12328 November 2022
I love this Blake Shelton franchise and rewatch most of the entries multiple times. This entry may be the best, but then I love some good sap.

Two mysterious backstories keep the viewer guessing. Elizabeth is on a quest to find the man who leaves a wrong number voicemail. This movie does two unusual things. First we get to see that man and some of his backstory as well as the woman he really left the message for in various scenes throughout the movie. Second, in Elizabeth's story, the traditional overheard conversation which usually creates the ending conflict occurs at the start as part of the backstory.

The acting is good. The dialogue is good. The pace is good. There is a nice twist. And there is Kleenex, I mean on my end. I have to give credit to Holland Roden, as Elizabeth, who has chemistry with Tyler Hynes because Roden is virtually ignored on the acting credits page of IMDb as of this writing.

There is a somewhat anticlimactic performance of It's Christmas by Tenille Townes after the story arcs are all but concluded. And earlier the origins of that song appear to have some revision from what we learned in the original movie.

Best Friends to Lovers
anicho01-944-8125394 December 2023
3 years ago, I would've said Hallmark manufactures nothing but over emotional, superficial schmaltz, but the last 3 years have greatly changed that.

'Time for HIM to come home' has a great atemporal plot device mixed with an overarching Christmas mystery and underlying plot of holiday sadness. The script balances all plot lines nicely while adding a b plot of following the separated lovers.

This is a GREAT cast. Steve Bacic was THE 90s hot guy for any sci fi genre, so pulling him for the b plot was awesome. Plus, anytime a celeb plays a celeb always adds credible star power i.e. Country singer Tenille.

The only rough spot came from the seeming age discrepancy. Although the same age, Holland, the female lead looks early-mid twenties while Tyler Hynes looks like a male in his mid to late 30s. I couldn't believe they were classmates, let alone buy him as an undergrad in flashbacks.

This was a great, well-written film that didn't trauma milk and had great cast chemistry.

Copy cat script
drbreakwell24 December 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Started watching and without fully watching can see the similarity with another Hallmark movie where a woman and her friend try to locate the woman in a picture. This one has a woman and her friend try to locate the person behind a phone message. Obviously the message should have revealed the phone number of the owner who left the message. But the movie would have ended before it began. So the confusing flashbacks to her past. The friend is reluctant to tell her he still "loves" her. Same old story like all the rest. Although, it looks put together than the older one, but probably will end the same. Will watch to the end and see.

Favorite movie from Time to Come Home for Christmas Series!
Ekm82851127 November 2022
Tyler Hynes delivered a funny and quirky character last week in Three Wise Men and then delivered us a heartfelt, deeper character with more emotion tonight in Time for Him to Come Home for Christmas. This is my favorite movie from the Time to Come Home series. Tyler and Holland Roden had a fantastic chemistry. This was my first time seeing Holland and I was impressed with her talent and depth. Tyler and Holland brought out the best in each other onscreen. I also loved seeing Steve Bacic in the movie. His storyline weaved very nicely with Tyler/Holland storyline. The movie ending was beautifully done for all of the characters-and the lovely music throughout the movie was a nice touch. TFHTCHFC was a good cry type of movie that delivered a heartwarming and happy ending!

One of BEST Hallmark movies!
sirtheconcon28 November 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Lead actors had fantastic chemistry. The plot was well thought out, written and acted. There were even tears by those watching in our home.

I thought the writers did a good job conveying the profound psyche aspects of grief, loss and trauma. The classic overhearing a communication and misunderstanding was realistically handled in this movie.

This movie is a MUST SEE for all romantics out there. Anyone who has ever experienced heartbreak or wonders about the one who might have been will be able to relate meaningfully to the story line.

If you have motor vehicle trauma history, do enter into the plot line knowing you may be especially impacted by this story.

I will watch the next Blake Shelton Hallmark movie again. This was superbly done! HIGHLY RECOMMEND!

Hallmark movies don't get better than this; a must see for True Romantics
MichaelByTheSea28 November 2022
I grade Hallmark movies on a curve, but I really loved this movie, and I love the trope where 2 people try to track something (or someone) down and become close during the search. It's a great way to see whether the leads have good chemistry or not- and there was lots of great chemistry in this movie. Tyler Hynes, who plays Josh, has become one of Hallmark's biggest stars- with good reason (he was part of the All Star cast in this year's big hit "Three Wise Men and a Baby").

But Hallmark rookie Holland Roden, who plays Elizabeth, was unknown to me. She was in Teen Wolf which I've never seen (but which my daughter assures me was very good). There's usually a greater range of acting required in these HMM movies and she effectively conveyed all sorts of different emotions. She was also very appealing, as was her character.

The movie reminded me of a Hallmark movie called "A Little Christmas Charm" with jewelry designer Ashley Greene and reporter Brendon Penny trying to to track down the owner of a charm bracelet. It also reminded me of "A Christmas Ring" with Nazneen Contractor as a reporter trying to locate the owner of an antique engagement ring with David Alpay. I loved both of those movies but this one was much more powerful and unique.

Equally powerful was a Christmas Eve classic called "The Christmas Secret" and a really good new Hallmark movie called "Long Lost Christmas" (both of which involve trying to track down a lost sibling). Anyone who liked those movies is sure to love this movie.

A good test for whether one is a Romantic at Heart is how one reacts to the effort that Elizabeth (and Josh) put into tracking down Madelyn. Some may regard the effort to be a waste of time. Hallmark addicts like me will be impressed.

This is the latest movie in the Blake Shelton produced "Time To Come Home For Christmas" franchise that Sheldon's mother, Dorothy Shackleford, helped write. But this 5th installment was written by Marcy Holland and it's a gem (she also wrote the far more breezy "Sailing Into Love"). The dialogue rang true and some of the lines really stuck out for me:

"I think it's romantic; one last grand gesture to the one who got away."

"I don't believe in signs. I believe we notice things because they're important to us."

Nice Guy: "Is there someone else?" Wishful Woman: "A memory." Nice Guy: "Those can be real hard to let go of."

I like all the other franchise movies, but this one may be the best. Although some things in the movie are easy to predict (like the details of a "misunderstanding" of an overheard conversation), others are not, which is refreshing given the inherent limitations of Hallmark's hugely successful formula. This was crisply and warmly directed by David Winning, who also directed Falling For Vermont, my favorite Hallmark amnesia movie. And the other actors were also quite good including Hallmark vet Steve Bacic (who has been in over 30 Hallmark movies). He played the guy who dialed the wrong number. I also like fellow Hallmark vets Karen Kruger and Iris Quinn, who played the mothers, and Dion Karas who played the "nudge nudge, tell her you love her" sister.

I knew and liked Tenille Townes before this movie but, as another reviewer noted, her anticlimactic performance of the franchise song "Time For Me To Come Home" seemed out of place.

But that's a minor complaint. This was classic Hallmark.

The Best So Far!
rkaden-281503 December 2022
This was the best Hallmark movie we have seen this season and may be one of the best ever. It seems everything Tyler Hines is in can be put in the better category and this movies was no exception. Steve Bacic is another Hallmark star we've missed. It was good to see him as a good guy again after a turn on When Calls the Heart and Virgin River as a nasty character! The stars had great chemistry and the story was exceptional with a totally unexpected twist ending.

I believe this is the first 10 rating I've ever givin a Hallmark movie. I wonder if there are two sets of writers. One for the familiar plot lines on Hallmark and another for the movies on Hallmark Movies and Mysteries? The HM&M movies seem to never dissapoint and generally have more realistic story lines.

I do believe this holiday season Hallmark has done some of the better movies than in the past, this one being tops!

Aside from the title this is excellent!
alettawelensky8 December 2022
I'm just going to say it, I think Candace Cameron Bure has been holding Hallmark back all these years! Since she left they have started making some really excellent stories that break the formula and deliver really heartfelt films that I can't wait to watch again.

This is the second film this year with Tyler Hynes in it, that has moved me to tears, he does pain and anguish really well.

I hope that Hallmark will continue to build on this year of excellence.

One last thing, Hallmark really need to work on their titles, I genuinely thought this was a parody, rather than the real thing. If my life depended on it, I don't think I could name this movie and I watched it 15 minutes ago.

Best one of the time to come home.
pattersonjamie-120792 December 2022
Extremely well done. Tyler Hynes (Josh) and Steve Bacic were wonderful as always. This was first time I'd seen Holland Roden (Elizabeth) and she was terrific.

The movie starts out with a young Josh and Elizabeth at Josh's family Christmas party along with Josh's brother Andrew. Tragedy happens and story fast forwards to Elizabeth receiving a phone call that was meant for some else. Elizabeth sets out to find the person the message was meant for. The movie is moving, funny, and sad as we learn from flashbacks about the tragedy, the lives altered and how the characters are intertwined.

Highly recommend.

BY FAR MY FAVORITE OF THEM ALL
meyakera18 December 2022
I've been blown away by so many of this year's Hallmark Christmas movies. In a good way. I think I've only misses one of these (ie in the series for lack of a better word), and this one by far is my favorite. When I watched this tonight, I was so moved that I had to review. I was crying by the end, and I very rarely cry at these. The story, the characters, I loved it all. And as much smaltz is one would expect from a hallmark movie, this had the perfect amount - for the romantics and the ones who just want to see a decent movie. THIS IS DEFINITELY A RE-WATCHABLE MOVIE! I plan to make my brother watch it; i have a feeling he'll agree (he's agreed with the two other movies I made him watch from this year's lineup, and he's commented to me they're different and better.)

This is the Hallmark I know!
mguelkerwilson30 November 2022
Warning: Spoilers
As another reviewer said, the Hallmark M&M series seems to do better in terms of acting range than just Hallmark Christmas movies. I watched this one late in the evening, and though I was pretty sleepy to begin with, it kept my attention until the end. With a somewhat predictable finish, getting to it was interesting and had some mystery and intrigue. I love Tyler Hynes, he plays characters well and seems to always have good chemistry with his leading ladies. I was unfamiliar with Holland Roden, had never watched her before -- she was impressive, not over the top but with enough range of emotion to make her character genuine and likeable. I also liked the fact that there was an element of romance for we "older" folks, (the Carter/Madelyn arc) not just the 20-somethings. Was it cheesy? Of course, only as Hallmark Christmas movies can be, but all a part of the charm or watching them during the season.

Amazing!
michelle-plassing7 December 2022
The top shelf of a Hallmark movie! With Tyler Hynes you just can't go wrong. His one liners and style of acting has the perfect mix of humour and believability. Holland Roden was fabulous, gorgeous, natural and beautiful to watch. The two of them together were the perfect hallmark match.

I've said in another similar review that the kiss at the end must be good....this didn't disappoint! No awkwardness and I felt their onscreen chemistry.

The storyline was a cut above, it was hearfelt and different from the norm. This year a few of the movies (three men included) have knocked it out the park for a perfect fireside Christmas movie. More please hallmark!

A Pleasant Surprise
hwhiteley-3961930 November 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I typically don't really watch Hallmark movies unless I'm in the mood for some background noise or something cheesy and predictable to lift my spirits up, and I was in need of something heartwarming so I thought I'd give it a go. I thought going into it I knew what it was going to be about, but I was surprised at how they took a step back from the same formula, adding in a second tale that perfectly converges with the first. The conflict is realistic and justifiable, not something that can easily be solved in the last five or ten minutes and actually starts at the beginning for once, and offers depth and the the opportunity to dig into a range of emotions. They touch on trauma, grieve, and forgiveness and it's truly beautiful to see. It's a relatively different and unique story I was not expecting Hallmark to give.

This movie has changed my life and I'm 74! Tyler's acting draws you in every movie and keeps you there, but this one, brilliant! Holland adorable, her acting matchless, Steve, Steve, Steve, we were glued to your acting, broke our hearts with you gestures that were so real and when you said "can we set it down", well I have to say that it healed my heart in more ways than I can say. Your best yet, more to come, plz?? The writer touched our hearts to the core. I could feel the pain deeply, but the restoration of hearts was so worth it. I'll never forget this move & the amazing cast, love you all.

Solid performances by lead actors
rhonnie-431393 January 2023
Warning: Spoilers
I liked this movie. The story was engaging because it involved a mystery and that kept me interested. So I enjoyed it until they solved the mystery.

Then I felt really sad. For a Hallmark movie, the subject matter was serious. There was a good level of depth and detail in this story. When it was revealed that their dear friend who had dreams of a future, died because of a stupid misunderstanding that could have been avoided if the two lead characters had just spoken to each other about how they felt, I also felt cheated and upset.

However, I loved the chemistry between the lead actors. There were solid performances by the supporting actors. Although I would not watch it again because it was such a downer, it was a good movie.
