When Eric Roberts appears....
tellstar11 March 2024
...your film is generally searching for some name recognition at a rock bottom prices to bolster what little it offers. I don't believe I'd be accused of delivering a spoiler by saying that the plot of this film is unlikely to offer much of a puzzle to discerning viewers who have likely seen all of this before. None of the relationships between the characters feel at all real and the shaggy dog plotting doesn't really engage the viewer. On the other hand, it is one of those films that offers a decent background experience if you have some work to do and can't afford to keep turning to the screen.

I Didn't Know Hallmark Made Sci-Fi
polyphemuswinks-1566914 March 2024
Warning: Spoilers
Okay, so there's this movie, "Inception". It's really good.

So, now there's this movie, with similar ideas but conceived as an homage to Hallmark Romances. It's not good at all.

I'd offer spoilers beyond that, but really, just watch, I don't know, literally anything else. This one won't prove to be a worthwhile investment of time or money.

Here's the anecdote form: A woman drives. Then she wakes in a forest. And is shot. Twice.

Then she meets a man. Who gets shot. Once.

Then she runs into the people who shot her. She shoots them.

Then she "returns" to the "real" world only it's not the "real" world at all and blah blah blah, it's so formulaic and predictable you can easily fill in all the blanks.

A Beautiful Piece Of Art With Solid Acting. Powerful and Touching
cartrektccom23 May 2023
This is one of those reviews that is extremely hard to write. Not because there is anything bad to say about the movie. Far from it in fact. Instead, the problem is telling the readers enough without giving away any major plot elements.

So, what can I say about the plot? Well, it follows a young woman called "Kate" (played by Fruzsina Nagy) who wakes up in the woods with no memory of who she was nor how she got there. She is quickly beset upon by mysterious masked attackers with an unknown agenda as she struggles to regain her memory and piece together why she is being targeted by them.

This movie is well written and intelligent. It is a very high concept movie so, if you like mindless violence and action, it may not be for you. However, if you like deep, intelligent and thought provoking stories that make you examine yourself too then "Aftermath" is definitely that movie.

The audience is immediately captured by the mystery surrounding the young woman. Most of the plot is revealed to the audience through powerful dialogue between "Kate" (Fruzsina Nagy) and "Bubba" (Edward Apeagyei). Their acting range is absolutely phenomenal in covering emotions such as fear, moments of humor to release tension, determination, pain and so much more. Sci-fi elements such as drones, holoprojectors and forcefields help strengthen the dystopian feel. Good use is also made of some more well known actors in support roles such as Eric Roberts as a behind the scenes mastermind or Simon Bamford as the voice of one of the mysterious masked assailants.

A special shout out has to go to Gergo Elekes who both co-directed with Jozsef Gallai and also composed an incredibly atmospheric soundtrack that strengthened and built dramatic tension in almost every scene. The sweeping vistas and creative shots from odd angles also helped to sell the mystery and confusion of the protagonists to the audience.

The finale was deeply touching and I dare you not to have a tear in your eye as it plays out. It raises deep moral questions about society and whether we SHOULD do something, just because we can or perhaps we would instead be morally bankrupt if we had the power to do something but chose not to.

Ordinarily with a movie review, I list some good things, some bad things and some more good things. However, in this movie, it is hard to find anything to criticise as it is a near perfect blend of dialogue, excellent camera work and sound mixing, solid action and stunts and so on. If there is any criticism, it is that earlier in the movie, the audience may think there are a few plot holes. However, as the story unfolds, it becomes clear that these were not plot holes at all but intentional elements that, looking back in retrospect, built towards that deeply emotional and touching final act.

All in all, if you like intelligent independent cinema, I cannot recommend this movie strongly enough. It is simply an artistic delight to behold and both intelligent and thought provoking. Well worth the hour and twenty minute run time.

Great acting and interesting concept
jackparerais14 March 2024
The film offers a contemplative look at the aftermath of a tragedy and the journey towards redemption.

Gallai's storytelling is complemented by solid cinematography and a fitting soundtrack, enhancing the overall mood and atmosphere of the film. While the pacing may feel slow at times, it allows for a deeper exploration of the characters.

The standout aspect of "Aftermath" lies in its performances, particularly that of Fruzsina Nagy. Nagy's portrayal of Kate brings depth and authenticity to the role, capturing the character's inner turmoil with subtlety. Her chemistry with the ensemble cast adds layers of authenticity to the relationships depicted on screen.

While it may not be the most enthusiastic film, its engaging narrative and strong performances make interesting.

Decent, but could have been better
johnlacrousette17 March 2024
I have to say, it is a low budget, indi sci-fi, so if you are looking for a cinematic experience that will blow you away with special effects, will not happen. You definitely can not compare it with a Hollywood studio production.

I think it is a decent film, with interesting elements and low pacing. I've found the story to be a bit too predictable for the most part but towards the end there is an unexpected twist.

Overall it reminded me of a Black mirror episode because of the mood.

The entertaining part is the human element, but truth be told, that could have been highlighted even a bit more in my opinion.

Failure is not an option
forbesguitars27 July 2023
I think fair reviews rate movies in the context of movies in the same genre of equivalent backing. So comparing this to a science fiction movie from a big studio and budget is unfair. This movie has excellent cinematography. The concept and idea of this film is excellent and the reveal is worth the wait. The criticism is I think it is slowly paced. I think a faster pace and extended scenes to fill in sone more detail would have really made this movie shine. At the conclusion I wanted to know more. Perhaps sone more explanation in the end to give sone of the earlier parts more detail. It is worth the watch.

Nice

Warning: Spoilers
Not much needs said other than this movie was awesome! Great storytelling can be accomplished without expensive special effects which most often simply distract from bad storytelling anyway. I must admit struggling a bit in the beginning of the movie but as the story progessed, it became much more compelling. The manner in which it was all tied up in a nice neat little bow at the end made the entire movie worth much more than the small amount of time I spent watching. I would be very interested in more storytelling from these same producers and executive producers. Saddle up and watch this movie - you will not be disappointed!
