Actress Julia Fox Comes Out As Lesbian In TikTok Video: ‘So Sorry Boys’
Image
Julia Fox, known for her breakout role in the 2019 film Uncut Gems, has seemingly come out as lesbian in a recent TikTok video.

The 34-year-old Fox posted a clip on Monday, responding to another user’s video about lesbians dating men. In her response, Fox stated, “Hey, that was me. I was that lesbian. So sorry, boys. Won’t happen again.”

Fox filmed herself walking down a street wearing sunglasses and a gray tank top as she made the statement.

This revelation comes after Fox’s October appearance on The Drew Barrymore Show, where she expressed having “sworn off men.” During that interview, Fox outlined stringent criteria for potential partners, emphasizing the need for someone who understands her priorities as a mother.

“It would need to be someone who also has to have kids, so they understand that they can never come first,” Fox told Barrymore. She added that any...

Video Exclusive: Julia Fox & Luis De Filippis On Trans Visibility In Film ‘Something You Said Last Night’
Image
In their new uInterview, Julia Fox and Luis de Filippis spoke about their new film Something You Said Last Night, which focuses on a trans woman and her family relations.

The movie is based on the director de Filippis’ short film Nonna Anna. Nonna Anna is a story that focuses on “a trans woman and her relationship with her Italian grandmother.”

The two women are “going through mirrored experiences” with “the grandmother is coming into a place where she’s losing her sense of self” and “her granddaughter is finally starting to like see what she likes in the mirror,” said de Filippis.

The focus of both of these movies is “a story about a trans woman that wasn’t about transition, that wasn’t about the mechanics of transitioning, it wasn’t about the trauma it’s really about like her relationship with a family member.”

‘Something You Said Last Night’ Review: A Sensitively Observed but Insufficiently Probing Family Drama
Image
The town in which Renata (Carmen Madonia) and her family vacation in Luis De Filippis’ assured debut, Something You Said Last Night, is sleepy — quiet and inert. The cottages, spaced out enough to give the idea of privacy, sit near a lake that glistens during the day. Boats can be rented and sailed out to the water, there’s a pool somewhere in the resort and a number of places for a person to retreat from the world.

Renata, a millennial writer grappling with a recent layoff, does a lot of hiding in De Filippis’ film. Some of it is out of necessity — she’s a trans woman navigating an often cruel world — and other times it’s for respite. Her mother, Mona (Ramona Milano), is a well-meaning Italian matriarch whose attempts to help her daughter can feel suffocating. Renata ducks behind doors and absconds to the lake to vape and contemplate.

‘Something You Said Last Night’ Trailer: A Charming Portrait of Trans Youth in Flux
Image
It remains needlessly difficult for trans films to secure funding — even ones with big names attached. As exciting new films like “Monica” and “Something You Said Last Night” finally secure overdue releases, a new advent of sensitively rendered trans films is on the horizon. After premiering at last year’s Toronto International Film Festival, where this critic was impressed by its subtle humor and intimate storytelling, the charming family dramedy “Something You Said Last Night” will hit theaters this summer. IndieWire is proud to premiere the trailer exclusively.

Hailing from first time feature filmmaker Luis De Filippis, “Something You Said Last Night” takes place over a single week during one tight-knit family’s lakeside summer vacation. The film stars magnetic newcomer Carmen Madonia as Renata, a 20-something trans woman who is still navigating the confusion of early adulthood. In a refreshing turn from most trans stories, she has a fairly healthy relationship with her family,...

‘Something You Said Last Night’ Review: This Charming Family Dramedy Embodies Trans Ennui
Image
Many people have complicated feelings around family, but queer folks often experience a unique kind of emotional whiplash. Family can be the source of conflict and intimacy; isolation and familiarity; safety and danger. Those who know you best can hurt you most, especially when acute self-knowledge is necessary to your survival. These themes resonate quietly in “Something You Said Last Night,” the visionary feature debut of Canadian-Italian filmmaker Luis De Filippis. Loosely inspired by her own family, the film is an elegant exploration of a young person careening between connection and alienation while on a cramped family getaway.

Intimately tender and boisterously fun, “Something You Said Last Night” announces the arrival of a vital new voice in trans cinema.

Focused and precise, the story takes place over a distinct period of time — a week-long family vacation. The film begins and ends with a car ride, that universal site of familial strife and bonding.

Canada’s Riceboy Sleeps wins Platform Prize.

Steven Spielberg’s semi-autobiographical The Fabelmans has bolstered its awards season prospects by winning the TIFF People’s Choice Award on Sunday (September 18).

The award is a highly reliable bellwether of Academy voter attention. In the last ten years every TIFF audience award winner has earned a best picture Oscar nomination and three have gone on to win awards season’s top prize: Nomadland in 2021, Green Book in 2019, and 12 Years A Slave in 2014.

The Fabelmans earned a rapturous reception at its world premiere on September 10 and immediately announced itself in the awards race,...

‘The Fabelmans’ Wins TIFF 2022 People’s Choice Award
Image
After two weeks and dozens of movies, the 2022 Toronto International Film Festival has come to a close. At Sunday’s Awards Breakfast, all eyes were on the People’s Choice Award, which is frequently a bellwether for the Oscar race. For the past decade, every winner of the coveted award has gone onto receive a nomination for Best Picture. Competition for the People’s Choice Award was stiff, with critical darlings such as “Women Talking” and “The Banshees of Inisherin” vying for the top prize. But ultimately, Steven Spielberg’s crowd pleasing, semi-autobiographical film “The Fabelmans” was named the winner.

“Above all, I am glad I brought this film to Toronto,” Spielberg said in a statement. “This is the most personal film I have made, and the warm reception from everyone in Toronto made my first visit to TIFF intimate and personal for me and my entire ‘Fabelmans’ family.”

Steven Spielberg’s ‘The Fabelmans’ Wins Toronto International Film Festival’s People’s Choice Award
Image
Steven Spielberg’s autobiographical coming-of-age story “The Fabelmans” took home the Toronto International Film Festival’s people’s choice award, providing a major boost to its awards season chances.

TIFF’s people’s choice award is one of the most reliable predictors of eventual Oscar success. In past years, winners such as “Green Book” and “Nomadland” went on to capture the best picture prize at the Academy Awards. Other recent recipients, including “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri,” “La La Land” and “Jojo Rabbit,” were best picture nominees and major forces during awards season.

Since the people’s choice category was created in 1978, seven recipients went on to win best picture at the Oscars — five of which were in the past 20 years.

“As I said on stage the other night, ‘Above all, I’m glad I brought this film to Toronto!’ This is the most personal film I’ve ever made,...

Steven Spielberg’s The Fabelmans picked up the top People’s Choice honor Sunday at the Toronto Film Festival, which wrapped up its 47th edition.

Spielberg’s latest film grabbed TIFF’s top audience award, which is often a barometer of future Academy Award nominations. “This is the most personal film I’ve ever made, and the warm reception from everyone in Toronto made my first visit to TIFF so intimate and personal for me and my entire Fabelman family,” the director said in a statement following the announcement of his win.

The Fabelmans, co-written with Tony Kushner, marks the first time the Oscar winner debuted a movie at the Toronto Film Festival. The childhood memoir will be released Nov. 11 via Universal. Another autobiographical family film about a director’s childhood, Kenneth Branagh’s Belfast, was named the top audience prize winner in...

Something You Said Last Night Creatives on Crafting an Authentic Trans Film
Image
First-time director Luis De Filippis aimed to shirk transgender film clichés with their TIFF debut Something You Said Last Night. With a cast and crew of transgender women, they came to the festival with the goal of telling a more authentic and heartwarming story about a woman stuck on a vacation with their family at a conservative beach town. Filippis also found a newcomer trans star Carmen Madonia to lead the film opposite Paige Madison Evans, a decision that added to the film's uniquely trans presence. Together, the trio sat down Collider's Steve Weintraub at the Collider Supper Suite and Media Studio at Marbl to dive into the ins and outs of crafting a relatable trans film.

The adaptation of David Chariandy’s novel tells the story of two Jamaican Canadian brothers in 1990s Scarborough. “We see this as a bookend to ‘Rude,’ which is set in the same period and is an adrenaline rush,” says D’Oliveira. “We’re returning...
