The trick is in being original
saba211522 May 2015
Warning: Spoilers
I had watched the prequel and loved it. It was a perfect film and a breath of fresh air in the turgid environment of Bollywood. So when the sequel came, we booked our tickets a week in advance and waited eagerly for the feast we were sure of.

If you are not seeking hundred percent verisimilitude the film meets all your expectations. We were in a late late night show (in a foreign country) and the theatre was full. People were clapping, hooting with laughter and enjoyment and were thoroughly engaged with the film.

The film is about what happens to Tanu and Manu four years down the line. In that, it's quite predictable. Disappointment, resentment, regret, a desire to turn the clock back -all these describe the madcap Tanu (Kangana)who makes her way home after getting her husband, Manu, thrown into a mental asylum for being boring and callous like most husbands. What follows is a mad trajectory of passive marital rage interspersed with a clever balance of realism, comedy and pathos. This is done so well and so effortlessly that you are carried along, now laughing, now upset, now understanding, now sad, now nodding your head in recognition at some situation or dialogue.

Without giving away the story, suffice it to say that Aanand Rai has proved that the public is ready to accept an indie film provided it's honest, original and clean. Here, Kangana steers the film and the rest of the cast perform seamlessly. Madhavan plays second fiddle to Kangana but with perfect élan. Deepak (Pappi) is our new Johnny Walker, fresh, natural and without the contortions of our so called stand ups. I love Jimmy Shergill and feel sad that he is visible only in glimpses.

Yes, Banno, your swagger is immensely sexy, attractive, rib tickling and I am rooting for ya. You go, gal!

A Post-Mortem Of Love & Marriage Powered With Avalanche of sentiments, laughs, tears and emotions
mohulghosh23 May 2015
The problem with love marriages is that, they are based on expectations; and once this thin line of 'trust' is broken; the very existence of 'love' and 'marriage' becomes suspicious. But should the couple break off or attempt to rejoin the broken links?

Anand. L. Rai, the director who gave us the fabulous Tanu Weds Manu, returns with a sequel, and well, hits it hard. It a blunt post mortem of a love marriage, which goes wrong somewhere. Fueled by an avalanche of sentiments, tears and emotions, TWMR creates another magic.

Although we can't compare the first and second parts; but if someone puts a gun at my head, and asks to.. then I will not take more than a second to tell that this one is better in every aspect.

The screenplay is fast, and tightly edited, and the dialogues perfectly blends with the tradition and culture of Kanpur, Lucknow, Jhajjar (Harayana). When it comes to Delhi, then again, the director chooses the most appropriate locations which correctly portray the color of the situation (example: Purana Quila, Delhi Zoo, a small apartment in West Delhi and more)

The movie belongs to Kangana Ranaut, who plays the double role, and manages it in the most magnificent manner. The way she molds into a Harayani athlete studying in Delhi University is simply amazing. While the original 'Tanu' is showcased even more sophisticated, urbane, vulnerable, glamorous and drama queen; 'Datto' is practical, focused, strong, and knows where she is going. Heck, she even fights her own family inorder to marry Sharma ji (Madhavan).

It's really amazing how Kangana always manages to get immersed in the character, and learn the assent, the style, the attitude so seamlessly. As I am thinking hard, I can't even imagine Priyanka or Anushka to even attempt such a role. Vidya Balan is the only name which I can recall right now, who can give her a fight in the most crucial department called acting. Hats off!

And, Madhavan! He manages to maintain the consistency of his character, Sharma ji, who is confused, angry and lost.. He knows that he is doing something which he doesn't really believe in; he knows that he still loves Tanu, but still he falls for the charms of Datto, and begins a journey which changes everything. (I saw ladies in the theater, shredding tears when Kangana roams around the village, with a glass of whiskey and sad old Bollywood song playing in the background)

The humor and the wit continue from where the first part ended, and actually amplifies the whole effect. Deepak Dobriyal, the magician once again weaves his magic and the spontaneous, crude, timely and hilarious dialogues delivered by him forces the audience to laugh out really loud. TWMR is probably the first movie in 2015 where I saw the audience going crazy with laughter in so many scenes and dialogues.

Jimmy Shergil's Raja Avasthi gets little footage, but his existence is very crucial. He again finds himself as a victim when it comes to getting married; but he takes it easily this time and doesn't make much noise. It's the internal fight within Tanu and Manu which is the soul of the movie. Datto is the catalyst, and magnifies the gap which is already present between them.

I will give it a 9 - Highly recommended for those, who are still mystified with love.

Returned with a bang

Director Mr. Anand L. Rai possesses very good flair for romantic comedy. His work is simply fantastic. He never let anyone go overboard. Approach towards scenes is very novel. Writer Himanshu Sharma has delivered again an entertaining film with balance dose of emotions. He has an ascending graph in his career. Usually its very difficult to carry a sequel but he has done with ease and with complete justification to its first part. Actually, it is ahead of its predecessor. Story line crosses beautifully with the first part. Good example of it is its interval, which clearly shows that it is integral part of its first one. Interval is humorous with drama. Screenplay holds your interest aptly. Dialogues are real and hard core entertaining. Even opening credits promise you that you are going to be entertained and film succeeds in it in balanced way. This film proves that if Director, writer and actors have clear cut understanding of characters then entertainment has to be there. This film pops up some messages too, which are soft but make you to think, i.e about women empowerment in Datto (Kusum) family. Climax is little stretched but again its entertain you and make you emotional too. This film is supported by very good performance. Hats off to Kangana Ranaut. She deserves standing ovation. You have to remind yourself that she is portraying two characters otherwise soon she will take you under her spell of performance that you have to forget that actually there is a single actor, performing double role. She is terrific. Again brilliant performance by Deepak Dobrial as Puppy. His expressions are just amazing. You have to laugh with just his body language and expressions. He is excellent. R. Madhvan is very good. Mohammed Zeeshan Ayub as Lawyer Chintu is impressive. Swara Bhaskar as Payal is fine. Rajesh Sharma is very good. Jimmy Shergill is good. Music is peppy and supports the film well. Even Background score is very good.

Just what the doctor ordered!

.....after you have been mentally slaughtered on an over-hyped film like Bombay Velvet the week before, TWMR is a breath of fresh air.

Excellent script, great direction and wonderful performances make this a must-watch romantic-comedy.

The attention to detail in character design, setup and dialects is worth mentioning.

Even if you haven't watched the prequel, it stands on it's own right and leaves you with a feel good happy feel.

It slightly loses it's grip somewhere close to the climax, but that aside, it's brilliant.

Go and enjoy!

Must say that Bollywood is Evolving
disuza-sana24 May 2015
Well this is my first ever IMDb review, so it may not offer you the flavor you would like to read, but still I will try my best.

First of all this is the film anyone can watch with his/her family. The storyline has much of twist to hold you on the chair for long time (Yeah, its a long movie). Perhaps you will be confused as I was to see Kusum, who was seen as a doppelganger of Tanu in the movie, her Haryani accent and acting was something we couldn't expect from Kangana.

I must say Kangana Ranaut is probably one of the most remarkably talented actress in the bollywood film industry and she has showed again after "Queen". R. Madhavan was also composed and played husband role quite well. Deepak Dobriyal (Pappi) was outstanding!! his hilarious act also offers you enough laugh. Jimmy Shergill has done his job perfectly yet again. Finally its a complete Paissa Wassool movie.

Wow - just wow!
lamemoviesguy23 May 2015
Warning: Spoilers
And it's a wow for the full team of TWMR - the actors, the director, the music director(s), the producer(s), the editor, the art director(s) and even the costume designer - these guys have created sheer magic on screen! More on that later.

Let us talk of weaknesses/ disappointments first. No - unlike most other great reviewers here and elsewhere, I have absolutely no problem with the climax - in my view, like any good Shakespearean comedy, the movie is about the events and human behavior that lead to the climax rather than the climax itself. And I absolutely loved the second half of the movie. In fact, two of my favorite scenes from the movie are the one where Tanu wanders out with a song by Geeta Dutt in her drunk head and gets a short-hair wig attached, and the one where she dances to "Ghani Bawri" like a crazy lady in distress. It is in the first half that I have my biggest discomforts with the movie - I found that half way too hurried. No doubt the first half has very clever scenes and sharp dialogs, but its racy pace fails to explain certain situations in the movie. How does Kusum Sangwan fall in love with a married man twice her age, which appears to happen in a single song? - perhaps love is blind and crazy and all that, but I feel that needed a bit more support from the screenplay. One of my favorite scenes from the first half is Tanu and Manu's face-off before the psychiatric panel - the dialogs and acting in that scene are mind-blowing - however, a single outburst of anger is not enough to imprison someone for aggressive behavior - that also needed a bit more support from the screenplay. Basically the movie's structure reminded me of Benigni's "La vita è bella" - hilarious in the first half and somber in the second. Yes, I can understand that such a structure makes the emotional impact of the second half more forceful but the first half needed a little bit (not a lot) of extension to put everything perfect. For the sake of completeness here, I should mention that another amazingly witty scene in the first half is where Manu's mom continues a monologue about electricity while her husband and son are conversing in another room - what a talent of extracting comedy from simple and realistic situations and characters!

Now the good (other than what's already above). Everything is good and some things are outstanding. The movie is one of the most entertaining I have seen in years - across Bollywood and Hollywood.

Screen-play (story and dialog) is superb, just superb. Make no mistake - as the title says, this still is Tanu and Manu's story - all others are side characters - a reviewer from "The Hindu" said very correctly - the movie can be given the subhead "The taming of Tanu". It is a Shakespearesque comedy with twists, some of them not so believable owing to lack of support from the play, but highly entertaining. This movie is an example of how excellent performances easily conceal the flaws of the play. The dialogs in the movie are however mind-blowing - one cannot but appreciate the sense of humor of the writer.

Music is wow. I cannot imagine any other background score or songs could have supported the screen-play so well. My favorites are "Ghani Bawri" and "Move On". Having heard the songs earlier on, I was looking forward to "O Saathi mere" but it was missing from the version I watched (in USA).

Regarding acting, Madhavan is outstanding. His stolid facial muscles, expressions and eyes say it all. Swara Bhaskar is excellent in her role and so are Jimmy Shergill and Deepak Dobariyal. I do not know the name of the actor who plays Tanu's new lover in this sequel but he is outstanding. And of course, Kangana owns the movie. By now, most people appreciate what a performer she is - this is her best so far - easily reminds one of Meryl Streep. The characters in order of my liking of the performances: 1. Tanu, 2. Kusum, 3. Manu, 4. Tanu's new lover, 5. Tanu's dad, 6. Tanu's friend, 7. Raja, 8. Pappiji, 9. Manu's mom, 10. Tanu's mom.

I do not know who other than Rai could have directed this movie - while at the helm such an outstanding ensemble cast, he paints such a beautiful but totally realistic tapestry of north Indian life - be it UP, Punjab or Haryana, and this one has a little mix of Gujarat also thrown in. Sounds and visuals in the background, the small banal activities, the chaos, public behavior and attitude - it is all there to a T. The direction of the movie reminds one of Hrishikesh Mukherjee, but Rai has his own style. Kangana has been given enough space to show her talents. Madhavan has been asked to provide a restrained performance. Their odd chemistry sparks on screen. I felt in my heart the loss of Tanu and Manu splitting, thanks in part to the second half of the movie having been given time and space for emotions to develop. When a prominent character in the movie stated on screen that "nobody" is happy from Manu's second marriage, that "nobody" included me.

This movie is a grand mix of old and new styles of Hindi cinema, not meaning that it does not have its own unique style. It is an absolute must-watch. Do not over-analyze - just enjoy!

Must watch
nikfantasy22 May 2015
Movie starts off with hilarious dialogs. Till the intermission, you just can't stop laughing, all thanks to Kangana's superb acting and Deepak's unbelievable comic timing.

It's not like any other movie sequels where they change the personality and behaviour of the character just to create more fun.

Music of the film is outstanding. You just can't stop repeating the song in your mind once you listen to it. #bano-tera-swagger

On post-movie thoughts, logic for climax seems to be off the track. But awesome performances by all the actors especially Kangana and Deepak makes you forget any illogical things in the movie. Yet again Kangana will surely be getting her National Award again.

If this movie can't win the best film award then surely awards are paid rather than earned by the Khans.

Just stop reading any more reviews and go to theaters to watch and enjoy or later regret for not watching the best movie of 2015.

Kangana's impressive double turn
Peter_Young1 April 2021
The use of double roles has been a prevalent plot element in Hindi films for decades. There isn't one popular actor of yesteryear mainstream cinema who didn't play dual roles at least once in his films, and it was common expectation of each star to play double so as to prove their acting prowess. Sometimes it worked quite wonderfully, and sometimes the results were laughably bad. Few of these films were of good quality, among which Ramesh Sippy's Seeta Aur Geeta remains a definitive classic where both the film and the lead performance by Hema Malini made wonders. Anand L. Rai makes Tanu Weds Manu Returns, and it definitely belongs to the category of good films employing dual roles. It might not be a perfect film, but it works. The film is actually a sequel to the enjoyable musical romance Tanu Weds Manu, but it is pretty much a film of its own which could be watched without having to see the prequel. It is essentially very different from the prequel in style, mood and execution, but most importantly, this is one of the rare occasions where a sequel is better than the first film.

Tanu Weds Manu Returns is amusing and entertaining, but above all, it is a nice film. The script is good, with some wonderful dialogue and cleverly handled situational comedy which generally doesn't insult the intelligence of the audience. The very first scene where Tanu and Manu recount their dysfunctional marriage and argue along the way is testament to that - it is excellent and consistently funny. Sadly, the second half starts losing some of its wittiness as it goes on and somewhere towards the end it starts gathering moments of pure silliness and some messy portions which drag it a bit down. Some of the scenes during the wedding reception in particular were not easy to follow and included too many unnecessary diversions. In that respect, the film's style is inconsistent, and it's placed somewhere between the old classics by Hrishikesh Mukherjee and the silly comedies by David Dhawan. Another one of its biggest minuses for me was the poor dubbing and sound which often did not sound natural or genuine and took away from the quality achieved in the writing.

Among the highlights of this film, the film's highpoint is the scene where Tanu and Datto finally meet, and it is absolutely delightful. Indeed, Kangana Ranaut reaches impossible heights in her exploration of her own artistic limits. Generally speaking, her dialogue delivery is much more refined and confident than it used to be in some of her previous films, and she plays the two roles so differently one can almost forget it is the same actor. As the titular Tanu, she is typically wicked and unlikable and plays her just fine even if she overdoes a little her scowl at times. Her biggest achievement, however, is the creation of Datto, one of the loveliest, most distinct characters one can think of, and she plays her with amazing vigor and affection. The Haryani accent she employs for her is impressive and just adorable. Madhavan, who was brilliant in the prequel, is relegated to a supporting actor in this film, which is sad but so is everyone else. They're all the backdrop for Ms. Ranaut, and she is the star of this show. This project is overall a very good film which is worth a watch, particularly for Kangana, whose presence shines.

There is nothing wrong with this one.
call_dip27 February 2021
Even if there was few here and there, that you can easily tolerate. You can't argue anyone else portraying the role other than Kangana. She is just too good.

She made the movie better than it actually is.

Yet the supporting cast and dialogue are equally compelling as the first. Kangana rocketed in this one.

If you don't agree.

Indian filmmaker Anand Rai's critique on the institution of marriage.
murtaza_mma30 May 2015
Tanu Weds Manu Returns is a 2015 Indian rom-com directed by Anand L. Rai and is the sequel to the 2011 film Tanu Weds Manu, also directed by Rai. Written by Himanshu Sharma, Tanu Weds Manu Returns stars Kangana Ranaut, R. Madhavan, Jimmy Shergill, and Deepak Dobriyal in the pivotal roles. The movie is set four years after the dramatic turn of events of Tanu Weds Manu wherein the seemingly incompatible duo of Manu and Tanu had managed to get hitched, overcoming all odds. Manu and Tanu now find themselves on the brink of separation. As with all things life, the passion has subsided and it's replaced by monotony and solitude. Their marriage seems more like a burden and a formality than a symbol of mutual love and respect. Their decisions are no longer driven by love but by their own egos. And yet, whether they want to believe it or not, all is not lost. And, so, they must both suffer, for although life is a great teacher, alas, it teaches the things the hard way. As a scrutiny of the institution of marriage, Tanu Weds Manu Returns reminds this critic of Krzysztof Kieslowski's Three Colors: White (1994) and Kangana Ranaut's performance of a seemingly selfish, inconsiderate wife of Julie Delpy's turn in the very film.

Tanu Weds Manu Returns is the kind of cinema that the Indian masses crave for. It's a formula that just cannot fail in a diverse and colorful country like India. Indians love to celebrate. The dozen or two festivals are just not enough. Festivities are an innate part of our lives. And marriage functions are the grandest of them all. For us, marriage is just not a union of two individuals but it's an alliance of two families. It's an occasion that gets everyone excitedâ€"be it the children, the young, or the oldâ€"for it is perceived as the greatest celebration of life. In short, the marriages are a singularly viable business. For Bollywood, it's a bankable subject like no other. Some of the biggest commercial hits in the history of Hindi cinema revolved around the theme of marriage. Films such as Hum Aapke Hain Koun...! (1994) and Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (1995) exploited the Indian sentimentality for the traditions and rituals associated with marriage particularly well. While Tanu Weds Manu was a testament to the efficacy of very fabric of marriage in binding us together, Tanu Weds Manu Returns is a gentle reminder of its fallibility.

Tanu Weds Manu Returns is a non-stop entertainer from start to finish, but, in order to fully enjoy the film, one needs to be credulous enough to believe anything and everything that's on offer. In other words, the viewer must be willing to suspend the disbelief concerning the implausibility of the narrative. Once the viewer makes this compromise, Tanu Weds Manu Returns will prove to be a roller-coaster of a ride. The film certainly shows us the dark side of marriage but it does so without appearing too grim. Marriage is like any other partnership but sometimes the patriarchal mindset can make the male partner behave in a rather chauvinistic manner. Now, that's fine as long as the fairer sex is willing to bend but the modern Indian woman can be every bit as feministic in her ways—it will certainly set the two of them on a collision path. In Tanu Weds Manu Returns, we witness how a free-spirited girl and her pragmatic husband fail to meet each other's expectations. How a lack of mutual understanding and respect takes them on the brink of divorce. How young couples forget that a marriage is never "all take and no give."

Overall, Tanu Weds Manu Returns offers truckloads of entertainment and can be enjoyed by one and all. Its witty dialogues and crude humor immensely add to its entertainment value. The movie offers an undercurrent of social commentary which is quite relevant to the modern Indian society. It's also serves as a critique of the institution of marriage. But, it shouldn't be mistaken for anything more than what it really isâ€"a sophisticated example of commercial escapism in cinema. Riding high on the success of Queen (2013), Kangana Ranaut once again carries a film on her able shoulders with her essaying not one but two contrasting albeit powerful caricatures (both of which are a treat to watch). She is well supported by the rest of the cast. There's no denying the fact that Kangana is the most bankable actress in Bollywood today. She is no longer the troubled prodigy she once was and has certainly come of age as an actress par-excellence as far as Hindi cinema is concerned. Tanu Weds Manu Returns has its share of flaws and it relies heavily on time-tested gimmicks but that doesn't stop it from serving its purpose, that of entertaining the masses. Recommended!

A Laugh-Riot!
namashi_122 May 2015
A sequel to the likable 'Tanu Weds Manu', 'Tanu Weds Manu Returns' is an equally enjoyable & energetic Sequel, that is a laugh-riot! Although the climax is underwhelming & disappointing, but Otherwise, the Writing, The Direction & the Performances work big time!

'Tanu Weds Manu Returns' Synopsis: Tanu and Manu's marriage collapses. What happens when Manu meets Tanu's lookalike Kusum - and when Tanu returns?

'Tanu Weds Manu Returns' starts where the first part ended & I must say the story of Tanu & Manu, has continued to become even better than before. The first-hour is a firecracker, with the narrative offering one hilarious sequence after the other. Also, the track involving Tanu's lookalike Kusum, is the high point of the enterprise. It offers terrific shock-value & the new character fits in beautifully. The second-hour, too, is wonderful, when the warring protagonists come face-to-face.

BUT, the climax is underwhelming! All of a sudden, this lighthearted comedy tale, turns clichéd & melodramatic. You feel anything, but not sympathetic for its protagonists & that acts as a major disadvantage. How one wishes if the culmination was as convincing as the rest of the film!

Himanshu Sharma's Screenplay is extremely funny & engaging almost throughout, but he doesn't end the story well. Anand L.Rai's Direction is simplistic, but effective. He deserves brownie points, for maintaining the pace & the narrative, so nicely. Cinematography is top-class. Editing is crisp. Music by Various Artists, is peppy. Art Design is good.

Performance-Wise: Kangana Ranaut & R.Madhavan are in top-form. Kangana is simply brilliant here in dual roles. She reprises the role of the spicy & bitchy Tanu with ease, but is simply extraordinary as the free-spirited & courageous Kusum. It's a versatile performance from one of the finest actresses working in India Today! Madhavan, on the other-hand, is lovely. He's so restrained & believable. Deepak Dobriyal is outstanding! He totally brings the house down & is sure to be loved by one and all. Jimmy Shergill is excellent, yet again! Swara Bhaskar & Ejaz Khan are decent. Rajesh Sharma is fabulous in a brief role. Mohammad Zeeshan Ayyub is first-rate. Rajendra Gupta leaves a mark.

On the whole, 'Tanu Weds Manu Returns' isn't perfect, thanks to a weak climax, but otherwise, it works! Worth a watch.

Alcohol ...... Alcohol ............ Alcohol

Warning: Spoilers
Killed all the goodwill created by original Tanu weds Manu.

Killed romance, killed innocence sweetness and respectful relationships. Madhavan character goes from shy handsome NRI boy to confused perverted prick running behind teenage girls. Kangana character goes from liberal revolting teenager coming to her senses eventually, to a drinking slut who has affairs with everyone from rickshaw walla to a brotherly relative. She puts her husband in mental asylum, goes on a hawas trip to find suitable match for herself while still married. Jassi turns from a gabru sardar to impotent wimp, payal from a sensible UP girl to evil housewife who hides from her husband that he is not really father of their baby.

And wine and alcohol industries must have paid serious money to production house becoz they are promoting drinking like anything. Everybody is drinking in every scene of the movie. Watch out for your urges and your liver! 3 stars for datto's character and all the laughs.

Only for Acting but screwed the climax
contactvikramraj30 July 2015
Acting was ostentatious by whole Cast specially by Kangana and Jimmy Shergill. Movie is awesome till the end but last 25 minutes flushed all the appreciation into gutter.

A girl who has no character, jumps to every man like a honeybee on the flowers. She screwed her husband's life and sent him to the mental hospital and finally comes back to her hometown and again starts flirting with other boys. Her husband now finds a new girl who looks like her wife. She loves him and even fight for him with her family. Now enters her wife and crocodile tears start falling. She wants her husband back in her life but is living with her previous boyfriend. At the end, old couples met with each other breaking the heart of an innocent girl. I mean what kind of crap is this. Where is the lesson taught? A honeybee who can not be changed is with her dumb husband again. An innocent girl who did everything for that guy is all alone. Climax of the movie teaches that a dumb will be dumb, a bit*h can do whatever she wants and innocents deserve tears. I seriously don't like it's climax but hats off to Kangana and Jimmy Shergill (although Jimmy's role was not that much but he was really awesome). Madhawan's acting was also good.

Ratings for acting to the star cast (out of 10): Kangana: 10 Madhawan: 8 Jimmy Shergill: 10 Others: 8

Story: 9 Climax: 0

Tanu Weds Manu Returns

Tanu Weds Manu Returns (TWMR)

Since I saw the trailer of TWMR I had shared the link with all my friends and family with excitement. There are a few things in any small glimpse of trailer or poster that catches your fancy, and TWMR did just that.

After the general debacle of film industry applauded Bombay Velvet last week (16 May 2015) - where most critics associated with film industry had given half hearted average or positive review while other movie critics gave confused reviews (appreciating the technicality of movie making and giving average rating) or negative reviews - everyone was keen on the fate of TWMR.

I personally was not expecting an all positive critics review opening weekend, but the film opened mostly with positive reviews. I made my way to the theaters to catch the movie.

The movie starts where Tanu Weds Manu (TWM) ends and immediately jumps four years later in UK with their marriage itch separation scene, where Manu (Madhavan) ends up in a mental asylum and Tanu (Kangana) flies back to India. Later on insistence of Tanu, Pappi (Deepak Dobriyal) brings back Manu from UK to India. Tanu goes back to her usual mercurial behavior of TWM - meeting her old flirtatious lovers, especially Raja Awasthi (Jimmy Shergill) and making new lovers, especially tenant in their house who is also a lawyer (Mohammed Zeeshan Ayub). Manu catches a glimpse of a Haryanavi athlete Kusum (Kangana in double role) and follows her, ultimately falling in love with her, and going to her home with a proposal of marriage. When Tanu knows about it, she lands up with Raja (who was this time supposed to marry Kusum) and members of Tanu, Manu, Kusum's family. What happens after that forms the rest of the story.

Before I say anything else the movie belongs to Kangana Ranaut as an actress, and more so to the character of Kusum, who steals the show from Tanu and wins the hearts of audiences with her gritty, earthy, simple, gender empowering straight-forward, athletic persona and Haryanavi accent. Kangana as Kusum is so endearing and into the skin of the character that all the other characters though well written and acted – Kusum wins all accolades and medals of this movie.

Equal credit to Director Aanand Rai – what progression he has had from small time TV assistant to TV show Director, to small budget movie director to giving three consecutive hits (TWM, Ranjhaana and now TWMR, which will be a sure hit) – and to writer Himanshu Sharma who has contributed with story, screenplay, dialogues. These duos were also behind the three hits mentioned above.

The pace of the movie is fast, the dialogues and one-liners given to each character are winners and worth it's clap, whistling moments, and roll over laughter from audiences. The script is laden with big pot holes, the setting is rustic, the editing jarring at times, the story jumps and sometimes does not make sense – but unlike Bombay Velvet which excelled in technical department and yet failed as a movie, TWMR though with countless technical flaws excels as a movie experience.

Regarding other cast, Madhavan has affable presence by carrying his goody shy self with ease. Deepak Dobriyal gets an author backed role as Madhavan's side-kick friend and gets the best one-liners. Mohammed Zeeshan Ayub excels in his short role as a romantic lover of Tanu. Jimmy Shergill's terrorizing persona looked shades below TWM.

I would like to specially mention the recreation and wonderful picturization of the Geeta Dutt sung Aar Paar movie song "Ja Ja Ja Ja BewafaÂ…". The music by Krsna Solo is catchy and fits well with the situation and flow of the movie. I liked the songs: Ghani Bawiri, Banno, 'Old School Girl' and 'Move on'.

There are two occasions of preachy speeches in the movie.

Yet it is Kangana Ranaut as Kusum, that is the ACE of the pack. There are no words to praise enough her acting prowess and again thanks to Aanand Rai for keeping faith and belief in Kangana and giving her such a power packed role, which Kangana delivers with a punch.

In the end my last word - Our heart goes out for Kangana as Kusum – for her innocence, honesty, grittiness, straight-forwardness, the aspirations of young town girl, her pride, dignity, women-hood, empowerment and her feelings of first love. It left me teary eye every time she came on the screen.

A once in a life-time role and character that will go into acting schools and Indian cinema history books as a classic!

Hail Kangana's performance...!!!
rutuljhaveri25 May 2015
Tanu weds manu returns is totally a popcorn flick one would like to enjoy. It's a 2 hour non stop funny, quick witted drama which outshines kangana's performance as haryanvi girl. As compare to it's prequel Tanu weds Manu which was an OK script, with good songs and direction these film exceeds it's prequel with better performances by each and every character in the film.

Kangana ranaut as Datto (a haryanvi girl) is a show stealer of this film, not to forget funny and quick witted fun-liners from pappi and you will feel pity on Jimmy shergill's character. While a new character has been introduced as a lawyer living as a tenant in kangana's home whose performance is also good. R. Madhvan as usual has delivered a good performance while he doesn't have as much screen space as kangana ranaut. This film one can say that women actor scores her mark.

Songs are not catchy as compared to it's prequel but fits well in the movie. While pace of the film is a bit slow, when first half of the film is full of laughter and second half comprises of mixed emotions. Script starts where it left from it's predecessor and it's quite predicted and feels stretchy a bit in the end. If you are kangana's fan then this film is must watch. You will be loving kangana's new avatar as you have never seen before.

On a whole, it's predicted but it's enjoyable and better than it's prequel.

A sequel is more fun than original
trojan00326 May 2015
"TWMreturns" is a slow and steady wind of laughter, love and originality of expressions. With almost the same star-casts as the original TWM had, this has succeeded to make itself among one of the most pleasant movies of this summer. and wait..the new Kangna's avatar is total worth your money. She is lovable, an excellent role played by Kangna which makes the flick smarter than its original version. Madhvan acts very elegant and his gentleman words give a true sense of a broken but moved-on man. The other star-casts specially "Pappi ji" steal the show with his very realistic humor at every 3-5 minutes of this movie. Jimmy Shergil also has left an impact with his eastern UP languages and slang. "Banno Tera swagger" song rules the charts and believe me, the way Kangna dances in this song will leave you awestruck. A total delight for 2 hours and 20 minutes, you can definitely afford to watch. I am deducting 1 star for myself not liking the end of the story; but that's how bollywood family movies are supposed to work- The happy endings.

128 minutes of your life you'll never get back Warning: Spoilers
I utterly fail to understand what the hype is all about. The movie is a complete dud from every possible perspective. I could not get rid of the headache it gave me for another couple of hours.

Girl: Screws up the poor husband -plays him into being forced into an asylum in London, leaves him there to rot and leaves for India. There she demeans her family and flirts with any guy around. Tries to get back with ex. Gets to know that the guy is marrying again- creates a whole drama to get back with him.

Guy: Gets screwed by wife, goes back to India after her. Sends a passive- aggressive divorce notice with a letter begging for an apology (ugh!). Spots his wife's doppelganger half his age- creepily stalks her, ends up wooing her. Almost marries her even before the divorce comes through. Leaves her at the 'mandap' for the screw-up wife!

The Other Girl: Fresh graduate, rustic girl. Falls for guy twice his age who stalks her because she looks like his wife. No concern about unresolved issues or the heavy baggage despite plenty of evidence to the contrary . Ends up getting dumped at her own wedding.

Do not even get me started on the sub plots- they did not even make any sense, and all of the loose ends were left hanging.

Except for maybe a few witty one-liners which make you crack up (which had a lot to do with the 'UP wala' accent), the movie was dumb as a doorknob.

Please do not torture yourself. Avoid!
