Prior to his work on "Star Wars" in 1977, actor and bodybuilder David Prowse had made a career playing goons, creatures, and bodyguards in high-profile movies. Prowse played Frankenstien's monster in the Hammer film "The Horror of Frankenstein," a role he had already played briefly in the 1967 version of "Casino Royale." He played a comedic torturer in "Carry On, Henry," the 21st "Carry On" movie. Most visibly, Prowse played the muscular bodyguard for the injured old Frank (Patrick Magee) in Stanley Kubrick's "A Clockwork Orange." He was the one who got to cradle Malcolm McDowell like a baby. This was easy for Prowse, who stood six-foot-six.
The actor also played Darth Vader "Star Wars," "The Star Wars Holiday Special," "The Empire Strikes Back," and "Return of the Jedi" ... but only in the scenes wherein Darth Vader wore a mask. In "Jedi," when Vader finally revealed his face, Prowse was replaced by actor Sebastian Shaw.

The thriller The Woman in the Yard, which is coming our way from Blumhouse Productions, Universal Pictures, and director Jaume Collet-Serra, was once set to reach theatres on January 10, 2025, but it was recently bumped off the Universal release slate entirely to make room for another Blumhouse / Universal collaboration, the Wolf Man reboot directed by Leigh Whannell. (Wolf Man is now scheduled for a January 17 release.) The release date shake-up isn’t slowing down The Woman in the Yard‘s momentum, though. Deadline reports that the project has just added another cast member: Russell Hornsby of The Hate U Give and Fences.
Hornsby joins the previously announced Danielle Deadwyler of The Devil to Pay and Till in the cast. Okwui Okpokwasili of The Exorcist: Believer and I Am Legend is also in there.

For a while, it seemed as though Netflix’s sole focus was to become the first streaming service to win the Academy Award for Best Picture. With the releases of “Maestro,” “All Quiet on the Western Front,” “The Power of the Dog,” “Don’t Look Up,” “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom,” “Marriage Story,” “The Irishman,” “Roma,” “Mudbound,” “Beasts of No Nation,” and others, many in entertainment felt that the streaming service that disrupted the entire industry was trying to backdoor its way into the good graces of Hollywood by releasing prestige pictures in theaters. Then, as the entire movie theater business was still trying to get back on its feet following the Covid-19 pandemic shutdowns, Netflix put “Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery” into theaters — for an admittedly limited amount of time. However, it appears that the days of the world’s largest streamer making massive efforts to release its films in cinemas might be over.

It’s already been a busy 2024 for Netflix. Out is long time film chief Scott Stuber; in are live sports (sort of), a huge Sundance splash, and 18 Oscar nominations, the most of any individual studio. What does the next 11 months have in store? Answer: a hell of a lot.
Netflix on February 1 released a teaser video for its biggest properties arriving in 2024, including more than 50 new movies and 90 new and returning series. The highlight is “Squid Game 2,” the follow-up season to the South Korean dystopian smash hit that became Netflix’s biggest show of all time.
At the end of Netflix’s mega-tease, we see Seong Gi-hun (Lee Jung-jae) and his new bright-red hair walking through an airport when a mysterious voice on his phone tells him, “You’re going to regret the choice you made.”
“I’m going to find you, no matter what it takes,” he says in return.

Netflix is not going to change up its movie strategy in the wake of the exit of film chairman Scott Stuber, according to co-ceo Ted Sarandos.
Sarandos did not directly address Stuber’s departure, news of which came out Monday. But, asked on the streamer’s fourth-quarter 2023 earnings interview about whether “recent management departures” might signal a shift away from original movies, Sarandos replied, “We do not plan to change our strategy or the mix [of licensed and original films]. It’s always going to be that kind of blend of, first window, second window and deep catalog. We think that formula works best to entertain the world.”
Netflix’s original movies “are attracting some of the biggest audiences in the world,” Sarandos said, adding that Netflix’s original films outperform licensed titles on balance. He called out “Leave the World Behind,” the dystopian thriller from executive producers Barack and Michelle Obama that stars Mahershala Ali,...

Netflix extended its lead as the world’s biggest premium video-streaming platform — pulling in a better-than-expected 13.1 million subscribers for the fourth quarter of 2023, a Q4 record. The company’s Q4 revenue came in slightly above Wall Street forecasts, while net income fell short.
As of the end of 2023, Netflix counted 260.28 million total members globally. On average, analysts expected the company to report about 8.8 million net new subs for the year-end quarter.
Netflix shares were up more than 8% in after-hours trading on the subscriber beat.
Revenue in Q4 grew 12% year over year, to $8.83 billion, higher than Netflix’s previous forecast due to favorable foreign exchange rates and “stronger than anticipated membership growth,” the company said. Net income was $938 million, or $2.11 per share. Wall Street expected earnings per share of $2.22 on revenue of $8.71 billion, according to financial data provider Lseg (formerly known as Refinitiv).

Sarah Philip digs into the story of the British film television channel that’s becoming a quiet sensation.
This article was originally published on 2nd April 2020.
When was the last time you saw a British black and white film on any of the five main UK terrestrial channels? A few weeks ago? A few months? Even if you do, it’s probably a film that’s been repeated a thousand times before. We’re at a point where even specialist movie channels like Film4 only show one or two classic films a day, and they’re not always British. As for subscription TV, TCM tends to screen American classics.
But one channel’s bucking the trend. Talking Pictures TV showcases black and white British films. Over eight years since its launch in 2015, it’s become one of the biggest film channels in the UK. In 2018, it attracted a weekly audience of up to 2 million viewers,...

Born in New Orleans, Knight cut her first demo track in 1965, a cover of Jackie Wilson’s “Stop Doggin’ Me Around.” After a series of regionally successful singles, Knight found mainstream acclaim in 1971 with “Mr. Big Stuff,” her first recording for Stax Records. Thankfully recovering after a brutal bout with Covid-19, Russian director Andrey Zvyagintsev will return with Jupiter. Variety reports the “politically-minded movie” tells the story of “a Russian oligarch’s reckoning with the harsh reality of his family’s future,” with a shoot set in Spain and France this spring. “The nature of absolute power is a universal theme, and through this prism we can look at any cultural landscape or historical era,” the director said.

This week's Empire Podcast would have been a lot longer had we kept in all the bits where Chris Hewitt was coughing. Needless to say, we cut (most) of them out (probably), leaving instead another fine and fun episode in which Chris is joined in the studio by James Dyer and Helen O'Hara, thus putting them at risk of infection. Thankfully, none of them turn into mindless zombies (how could we tell?) as they discuss the week's news, including the sad passing of Terence Davies, Kevin Costner's big-screen comeback, and rumoured upheaval at both Marvel Studios and A24, review :a[The Miracle Club]{href='https://www.empireonline.com/movies/reviews/the-miracle-club/' }, Shortcomings, :a[BlackBerry]{href='https://www.empireonline.com/movies/reviews/blackberry/' } and Paw Patrol: The Mighty Movie, and fail spectacularly to name all the Carry On movies. Oh, and James bangs on about Taylor Swift, which makes a change.

Universal is getting deeper into the Steven Spielberg business and will be carrying more of the weight of the movies he produces.
Universal and Spielberg’s Amblin Partners are forging a new pact under a multi-year deal, but as part of the new arrangement, Amblin Partners will no longer fully finance its own movies that it produces for Universal, and Universal Pictures will be providing some of the backing for Amblin Partners movies made under the deal.
Amblin will continue to produce other movies with rival studios, such as “West Side Story” at 20th Century or “Ready Player One” at Warner Bros., but Universal will have first-look status on all of Amblin’s theatrical projects.
The idea is to give the company “more creative and financial flexibility,” according to the press release announcing the deal. That should mean more opportunities for grown-up oriented projects, like “Green Book” and “1917” that were both released by Universal,...

Caldwell’s wife, Mary, confirmed the singer’s death on social media on Wednesday, March 15th. TMZ reports that he had been battling an unspecified illness for several years.
As a teenager, Caldwell moved to Los Angeles to pursue a career in music. He briefly played rhythm guitar for Little Richard, but it took six years for him to catch his big break and land a recording deal with Tk Records. “What You Won’t Do for Love,” appeared on his 1978 self-titled debut album, and hit the top 10 on the Billboard Hot 100. In the ensuing years, the song would be sampled by a number of hip-hop and R&b artists, including Tupac on “Do for Love.”

Another Sons of Anarchy spinoff may be closer than ever, as actor Theo Rossi–who played “Juice” Ortiz on the FX series–said there very well could be something revving its engine.
Speaking with Deadline, Theo Rossi said of a potential Sons of Anarchy spinoff, “There might be something coming up where we’re all back together, which is insane…If it happens, it’s wild, but if it doesn’t, it would be perfect and really cool because we also talk every day.” He added, “It’s totally different. It’s really cool.” Whether this would be another show or a potential movie remains unknown, but it wouldn’t be the first spinoff. Mayans Mc premiered in 2018, less than four years after Sons of Anarchy concluded.
Mayans Mc’s success–it was renewed for a fifth and final season last summer–shows that Sons of Anarchy fans are eager to support a spinoff.

In 1968, when Tim Curry was only 22 years old, he landed his first major acting gig, performing at the Shaftesbury theater in London. He played the role of Woof and was part of the ensemble in a production of "Hair," the popular counterculture "hippie" musical Gerome Ragni, James Rado, and Galt MacDermot. Woof was the role played by Don Dacus in Miloš Forman's celebrated 1979 film adaptation. Prior to this, Curry studied acting in college, and had sung in choirs as a boy. It seems Curry had no screenplay-ready moments of catharsis or quirky episodes of serendipity when wanting to become an actor; he wasn't plucked from a construction job by a producer. He wanted to act, he got educated, and he got acting jobs. Sometimes, we merely achieve what we set out to do.
It was on the set of "Hair" that Curry would meet one Richard O'Brien, a stunt performer for feature films,...

We’ve already seen the Sons of Anarchy spin-off Mayans M.C. and creator Kurt Sutter has been hinting for some time that there might be more SoA in the pipeline, even specifying a couple of years back that he wants to explore the story of Jax’s son, Abel.
Now it seems SoA‘s return could be pretty soon, according to hints dropped by Theo Rossi during a panel discussion about Emily the Criminal at Soho Works in Los Angeles on Friday.
“There might be something coming up where we’re all back together, which is insane,” Rossi told Deadline. “If it happens, it’s wild, but if it doesn’t, it would be perfect and really cool because we also talk every day,” he added, referring to his continuing friendship with the show’s lead, Charlie Hunnam, and the rest of the cast.
