Zaslav, hasn’t exactly endeared himself to cinephiles, having overseen the deletion of several completed films in exchange for a tax break. Sarandos? Well, he’s doubling down on his anti-cinema stance, as he continues to bang the Netflix drum.

Exclusive: Rising British actor Noah Jupe (A Quiet Place) is set to star in Play Dead, the new survival thriller from Carry-On‘s Jaume Collet-Serra that we told you about back in February, sources tell Deadline.

No details have yet emerged about Jupe’s character or the film’s plot, though it’s been described by sources as Don’t Breathe meets 1917. Production begins in Melbourne, Australia in May. The project is one of two recently announced for Collet-Serra, who earlier this month was linked to An Innocent Girl, a psychological thriller to be produced for Netflix by Greg Berlanti and Sarah Schechter.

Apple TV+ today unveiled a first look at the new crime drama Smoke, starring and executive produced by Taron Egerton, and created by Dennis Lehane. The nine-episode series premieres globally on Apple TV+ on Friday, June 27, 2025 with the first two episodes, followed by new episodes every Friday through August 8, 2025.

Inspired by true events, Smoke follows a troubled detective and an enigmatic arson investigator as they pursue the trails of two serial arsonists.

Gotham Award winner Danielle Deadwyler (Till) is teaming with Alix Madigan and Michael Sherman to develop and produce The Street, a feature adaptation of the novel by Ann Petry, in which she’s set to star.

Also aboard the project is Gina Atwater (Westworld), who will write the script and serve as executive producer.

Reissued in 2022, Petry’s 1946 debut novel was famously the first book by a Black woman to sell over one million copies. This is the harrowing story of young Black woman Lutie Johnson (Deadwyler) and her spirited struggle to raise her son amid the violence, poverty, and racial dissonance of Harlem in the late 1940s.

There are big, all-consuming emotions contained within the cosy Netflix weepie The Life List, a film about grief, family, love, dreams, heartbreak and the courage to strive for the life you truly want rather than the one you’ve settled for. Based on the bestselling novel by Lori Nelson Spielman, it’s a proudly heart-over-head confection and given how the platform has become a reliable provider of movies and shows aimed at younger women who have been underserved elsewhere, it’ll probably find its audience.

But writer-director Adam Brooks, who knows this world better than most, having been involved in sturdy star-led studio films such as Definitely, Maybe; Wimbledon; and the hugely underrated Meg Ryan romcom French Kiss, can’t quite squeeze the tears or...

The metaphors weigh heavily in the latest Blumhouse horror film, which relies more on subtle atmospherics than their usual offerings. Jaume Collet-Serra may not regularly come to mind when one thinks of modern A-list directors, but the man's name probably deserves more respect. From turning mid-budget Liam Neeson thrillers like "The Commuter" into solid hits to directing massive-scale franchise plays like Disney's "Jungle Cruise," the man has done it all, and often does it well. Collet-Serra cut his teeth in the horror genre, a genre he hasn't worked in for quite some time -- but he's back.

At long last, Collet-Serra has made his welcome return to horror with Blumhouse's upcoming "The Woman in the Yard." I had the good fortune of visiting the set of the film last year, with the production taking place just outside of Athens, Georgia at Athena Studios, a little over an hour outside of Atlanta. Collet-Serra, who previously directed 2005's "House of Wax" remake and the fan-favorite "Orphan," appeared to be in his element.

If you watch movies and are subscribed to Netflix, there's a decent chance you watched the thriller "Carry-On" at some point in the last few months. Directed by Jaume Collet-Serra, known for his Liam Neeson action joints such as "Non-Stop" and "The Commuter," it quickly rocketed up the streamer's charts, becoming a smash hit. It also, somewhat indirectly, paved the way for his new film.

After directing horror films like "Orphan" and "House of Wax" earlier in his career, Collet-Serra is returning to the genre with Blumhouse's "The Woman in the Yard." The film, which has largely been shrouded in mystery, represents the director's first horror effort since 2016's "The Shallows." As far as modern horror goes, there are few (if any) names that rival Blumhouse. As the studio behind Jordan Peele's modern masterpiece "Get Out," "The Purge" franchise, one of M. Night Shyamalan's biggest movies ever in "Split," successful franchise revivals such as the "Halloween" trilogy, and monster adaptations like "Five Nights at Freddy's," the house that Jason Blum built has become a go-to name for horror fans. Now the studio is seeking to deliver another original hit in the form of "The Woman in the Yard."

Trap was one of my favorite movies of last year. Every moment of the film was riveting, watching as a serial killer and his daughter tried to escape a sting operation. Unfortunately, not everyone agreed, with some people finding it too off-putting and the Academy members not having any room in their hearts to nominate it for their precious Oscars.

M. Night Shyamalan, director of Trap, was shut out of Hollywood for a while. He had to fund Split himself after backlash from an admittedly disappointing streak of films, which included The Last Airbender. However, Trap is one of his best, and I think it's time to admit that.

Netflix is taking it easy on us this week, as they're only adding eight new shows this week. Maybe the old adage is right after all: March comes in like a lion and goes out like a made-for-streaming rom-com. I'm pretty sure that's it.

Reality shows, true crime stories, stand-up comedy - they're all standard fare for your favorite streaming service. Unless they're paying top dollar for someone like Dave Chapelle, all of these shows cost quite a bit less than, say, a $320 million critical disaster that viewers love. For what it's worth, I think the critics were primed to hate the movie before they saw the first minute.

So that's exactly what we're getting this week. There's also a new Harlan Coben adaptation, a light and semi-breezy rom-com, and a new show that Bridgerton fans will absolutely want to check out. Best of all - at least to me...

Netflix is one of the largest streaming services, and, aside from having other licensed titles on its platform, it has also created a name as a studio. Its titles often feature high-profile actors, and despite some of them not often enchanting both the critics and the audience, the streamer has had an amazing few months.

One of the titles that received major success recently is Cameron Diaz's Back in Action. The action comedy, which stars Diaz and Jamie Foxx as retired spies, also comes with a tongue-in-cheek reference to the actress' long break from acting. When Netflix released its “engagement report,” a chart that details the streaming giant’s top performing content from July to December 2024, on the film list, just past word-of-mouth sensations like “Carry-On” and “Rebel Ridge” and a couple of spots below heavily hyped sequel “Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F,” the sixth most-watched thing on Netflix was “Sing: Thriller,” a short film set in Illumination’s “Sing” universe that features Michael Jackson’s beloved smash. This 10-minute “Sing” short performed better than animated features like DreamWorks’ “Trolls Band Together” and Netflix’s own original animated movies “That Christmas” and “Saving Bikini Bottom: The Sandy Cheeks Movie,” a “SpongeBob SquarePants” project licensed from Paramount. “Sing: Thriller” racked up a staggering 77,000,000 views.

Netflix continues to be a go-to destination for movies and TV shows for many streaming service users. In addition to having plenty of licensed content, Netflix also boasts a healthy library of original movies and TV shows that continues to grow with each passing year. Major hits from past years include movies like Damsel (2024), The Gray Man (2022), and The Adam Project (2022), as well as TV shows like Wednesday (2022–), Stranger Things (2016–), and Bridgerton (2020–).

2021 saw the release of Adam McKay's Don't Look Up, a comedy about a planet-killing comet heading straight for Earth. The Netflix film, which stars Leonardo DiCaprio, Jennifer Lawrence, Meryl Streep, Cate Blanchett, and Jonah Hill, earned somewhat mixed reviews but became a massive viewership success. Don't Look Up previously ranked as the second most popular movie of all time on Netflix behind Red Notice (2021), but a newer movie has now just taken its spot.

Carry-On Moves...

Netflix continues to fight the good fight for no-nonsense action movie magic, with the streaming giant having now revealed the release date for what could easily be their next action thriller smash hit. Now all set to be unleashed next month, Exterritorial sounds like it could be the next Taken, as a former Special Forces soldier is forced to resurrect her particular set of kills after her son mysteriously goes missing.

According to Netflix, the German action outing, which has been made in conjunction with Constantin Television (Dear Child), is due to be released on the streamer on April 30, 2025. Written and directed by Christian Zübert, Exterritorial promises to be as gripping as Liam Neeson’s action movie magnum opus, and you can check out the official synopsis for Exterritorial below.

Season 5 of Law & Order: Organized Crime premieres in April (this time on Peacock), and MovieWeb recently had the chance to learn more about it from Meloni's co-star: Dean Norris. The celebrated Breaking Bad actor has been busy promoting his new horror-comedy The Parenting, now streaming on Max, and Norris took time to share more about his exciting Law & Order show as well, including his longtime rapport with Meloni.

"Chris and I did a movie together, a small movie called Small Time about two used car salesman, and that was about 10 years ago. And I just loved him," Norris told us.

Netflix's latest release, The Electric State, has all the qualities of a major blockbuster. It comes from a big studio, it has a stellar cast and critically acclaimed directors, and, despite the studio's reluctance for theatrical releases, it has a major budget.

However, The Electric State debuted with one of the worst ratings of the year. The sci-fi film debuted with an abysmal score of 10% on Rotten Tomatoes, a number that slightly increased to 14%, still a major disappointment. Following its official release on the platform, the audience score couldn't be more different, as it's over five times better than the critics' score.

While most of the critics called The Electric State a bad movie, the audience fully disagreed. Following its Mar. 14 release on Netflix, The Electric State has an audience approval score of 76%. While the score is not exactly a reason to start celebrating and greenlighting a sequel just yet,...

The end of 2024 came with one of the biggest films for Netflix. In December, it premiered the critically acclaimed Carry-On, which has been continuously breaking records.

The thriller has a stellar cast led by Taron Egerton, Jason Bateman, Theo Rossi, and Danielle Deadwyler, and has been a major hit since its Dec. 13 release on the streaming service. The movie had the biggest debut for a film in 2024, and a month later, it had already hopped on Netflix's Most Popular Top 10 Movies in English. Per Tudum, Carry-On is now the second most-watched film on the platform.

The fact that Carry-On reached the prestigious Most Popular list was a huge achievement in itself. The action thriller debuted with 42 million views in its first week. It hit the Most Popular Top 10 list in fifth place with 149.4 million views after less than a week on the platform, and its numbers have continued growing.

In Christopher Landon’s Drop, a widowed mother bravely returns to the dating scene only to find herself caught in an awful game of cat and mouse. Following in the footsteps of films like Phone Booth, Red Eye and, more recently, Carry-On, this Blumhouse production, which premiered at SXSW before its theatrical release in April, balances its pulpy narrative with an escalating and terrifying tension. Landon’s command of suspense, coupled with a compelling romantic thread and delightful performances from Meghann Fahy (The White Lotus) and Brandon Sklenar, make Drop a solid popcorn movie.

Like its cinematic predecessors, Drop‘s premise relies on compromised technology and nefarious anonymous actors. It’s best experienced with little to no information, so for the spoiler-averse, it’s time to abandon this review.

An adaptation of the manga "Oni Goroshi" by Masamichi Kawabe, Demon City merges violent revenge action with the supernatural in this tale of a highly skilled hitman who resurrects his deadly skills and cuts a bloody path of vengeance after his wife and daughter are (seemingly) killed. While it does sound a lot like a thousand revenge stories before it, sometimes, a no-nonsense action thriller about a former assassin on the warpath is exactly what you need.
