“Animal Control” star Joel McHale is keeping the vermin off his “Community” movie set. McHale told The Post that Chevy Chase is not welcome back for the upcoming Peacock movie adaptation.
“I don’t think he’s allowed to [return],” McHale said. “I don’t think it would happen. I don’t think [him returning] is a thing. Obviously his unceremonious departure in Season 4 pretty much did that in.”
McHale added: “I’m guessing if you asked him, he wouldn’t be interested” in starring in the movie.
The “Community” movie is the culmination of Dan Harmon’s preordained six-seasons-and-a-movie destiny for his NBC sitcom. Chase was part of most of it, but was fired from the series in 2013 after allegedly using a racist slur against co-star Donald Glover and butting heads with series creator Harmon.

The doctors of Grey Sloan are checking back in.
Grey’s Anatomy has been renewed at ABC for its 21st season on the Disney-owned broadcast network. The pickup, which had been in the works for some time, comes as the strikes-impacted 20th season recently returned to the network.
The renewal will bring the Shonda Rhimes-created medical drama to its second season under new showrunner Meg Marinis, who took over at the end of season 19 for Krista Vernoff.
Marinis has been with Grey’s Anatomy since its third season and had worked her way up since beginning her tenure on the show as a writer’s production assistant. She then worked as a writers’ assistant and medical researcher before moving up the chain of command to executive producer, a title she held for the past four seasons before being promoted to the big chair.

Exclusive: Fox Entertainment CEO Rob Wade is realigning the company’s content and business operations into three groups, the Fox Television Network, Fox Entertainment Studios and sales arm Fox Entertainment Global.
The restructuring includes new senior leadership roles for Michael Thorn, who has been named President of the Fox Television Network, and Fernando Szew who will serve as Head of Fox Entertainment Studios. They will lead two of the three divisions, continuing to report to Wade. Fox’s Unscripted President Allison Wallach will be part of Szew’s team on the studio side.
The changes create a streamlined structure that keeps network, studio and distribution operations separate under different leaders as opposed to the previous setup where both the scripted and unscripted for network and studio were overseen by the same executive.

After being discussed for around a decade, the Community movie is coming much closer to being a reality, according to star Joel McHale.
In an interview with Deadline today, in support of his Fox sitcom Animal Control, returning for its second season March 6, McHale first pointed to recent comments by co-star Donald Glover in an interview with Entertainment Tonight, confirming that “the script’s done.”
McHale said that while he hasn’t yet read the script himself, he’s more than happy to share some story details. “We go to the center of the earth,” he joked. “It’s like the movie The Core.”
In all seriousness, McHale said, it’s his belief that the Community movie will shoot “this year.” He’ll be “shocked,” he said, if it doesn’t. “But I really do think it’s happening this year, and probably next week. It’s basically working around Donald’s schedule.”
In conversation with Deadline on the Fox lot, McHale also called his Animal Control cast “one of the funniest groups of people I’ve been around” — in contrast to the Community team, who he joked “were just a bunch of hacks.”
While one of his old co-stars, Ken Jeong, appears on Animal Control this season as a dog whisperer, McHale joked that he, too, is “a hack and cannot act or tell jokes,” going on to claim that “he’s not funny, not successful, and I have carried him for years. Everyone thinks I’m joking, but it’s true.”
Of course, in reality, McHale said, Jeong’s episodes were coming in too long because he did “so much funny stuff…He was really way too f***ing funny, and it really pissed me off.”
Created by Dan Harmon, Community ran for 110 episodes across six seasons, between 2009 and 2015, originating on NBC before moving over to the now-defunct Yahoo! Screen for its final run. Watching as McHale’s suspended lawyer befriends a group of eccentrics after being enforced to enroll in community college, the show was not always a ratings juggernaut, though it has maintained a very loyal fan following throughout all these years. Over the course of its run, it also notably won an an Emmy, a Critics’ Choice Television Award, and other accolades.
Peacock officially announced the Community movie back in 2022, enlisting Harmon and Andrew Guest to pen the script. McHale said during a January 2023 interview on Jimmy Kimmel Live! that it was to begin shooting in June of last year, though those plans fell through in a double strike summer.
In addition to McHale, cast members set to return for the movie include Pudi, Alison Brie, Gillian Jacobs, Jim Rash, Jeong, Yvette Nicole Brown, and Glover.

Others set to appear in S2 guest roles, as previously announced, include Ken Jeong, Sarah Chalke, and Krystal Smith.
Premiering last February, the show created by Bob Fisher, Rob Greenberg and Dan Sterling follows a group of local Animal Control workers whose lives are complicated by the fact that animals are simple, but humans are not. McHale plays Frank, an opinionated, eccentric Animal Control officer who may not have gone to college but is still the most well-read person in the room. A former cop, Frank tried to expose corruption in his department, but his efforts got him fired, which may explain why he’s so cynical and curmudgeonly. He has an almost superhuman ability to understand animals.

Exclusive: The Kumars are plotting a return — this time on American television. Fox has ordered a presentation for multi-camera comedy Meet The Kumars, a followup to the award-winning 2001 BBC series The Kumars At No. 42. Most of the original cast is back for the U.S.-flavored revival of the family sitcom/talk show.
Fox also has come in as a partner on The Donut (working title), a single-camera family business comedy in development at Canada’s CBC from Catherine Reitman and Philip Sternberg, stars of CBC/Netflix’s popular comedy Workin’ Moms, which Reitman created.
The two commissions are part of Fox’s international content expansion, which involves developing and producing scripted series with local creators and studios in English-language territories, currently Canada and the UK and ultimately Australia as well.

The past three years have severely impacted the broadcast television landscape.
Following a decade of growth — remember the days of 100 pilots? — the TV landscape on broadcast is experiencing further contraction because of production delays caused by both the pandemic and Hollywood’s historic dual strikes in 2023. The result is fewer pilots, a shift to year-round development and now fewer scripted originals as networks bulk up on unscripted fare, cut costs and continue to see development money shifted toward streaming.
On the leadership front, Frances Berwick now has lone oversight of NBC after Susan Rovner was let go from NBCUniversal as part of a larger restructuring, with ABC (Craig Erwich), CBS (Amy Reisenbach), The CW (Brad Schwartz) and Fox (Rob Wade) continuing with their current executives.
The biggest shift in broadcast is the shortened 2023-24 seasons of scripted fare, production on which was delayed from the traditional summer start to the...

Watch out, Ken Jeong: Your “Community” co-star Joel McHale is coming for your “Kensday” crown. Through a series of fill-in gigs, McHale — who also stars on Fox’s sitcom “Animal Control” — will be all over Fox’s Wednesday night lineup in the coming weeks.
That’s because McHale is set to fill in for Jeong as guest host of the network’s musical gamer “I Can See Your Voice” on both Wednesday, Feb. 14 and Wednesday, Feb. 21. Then, on Wednesday, Feb. 28, McHale is back — but as guest host on “We Are Family,” filling in for regular host Anthony Anderson. (McHale will host the special two-hour season finale of “We Are Family” in its entirety.)
All of that leads to the Season 2 premiere of “Animal Control” on Wednesday, March 6, on Fox. The network is definitely invested in McHale: On Tuesday, Fox revealed that it had already picked up a Season 3 of “Animal Control.
