Jo Koy's Best Since Seattle
tkdlifemagazine15 September 2022
Jo Koy is a very funny and endearing comic. His stand up stories about his life and family are self-effacing and funny. His jokes about Filipino family life and Asian culture are revealing and funny. Koy has had several specials of different natures since his first big one on Netflix in Seattle. This one is is his second best. He plays very well with the audience, and he manages to engage them in a personal way, even in a forum as big as the one in Los Angeles where this one was filmed. Boy takes some time ion this one to handle post-COVID life, his son-a usual target- and his relationship with Netflix over the years. Koy is a great comedian and this special is worth seeing.

Jo Koy's funniest yet and what a show!!!
saintcrossgear6 October 2022
Wow the reviews here from spam accounts and haters, they must be extremely lonely not to appreciate this show.

Jokoy's the best when making people laugh and engaging with them. New stories, same funny voice and great personality! I still love the way he impersonates his mom, and connecting with different cultures/races.

He can make you laugh so hard but then appreciate his talent. Might not be the best stand up comedian, but he's top tier right now.

I already watched this 3 times now and I'm still laughing so hard! Makes you really feel great after all the stresful news being blurted out recently.

Loved it!
meganthegene25 September 2022
With all the negative happening in the world im glad he used his platform to tackle on some of the issues he feels passionate about, of course this might not be for everyone but for people going through it, the message he left about sacrifice and success was comforting, and as a fan. Im glad I got to hear it.

Talking about the Filipino culture was also great, it puts a perspective of his culture for the viewers and even if youre not Filipino you would find similarities, I think its the beauty of immigrants, they share a common ground where the tools mentioned might be different but there is some part of the context that you've experienced.

Nonetheless, it shows Jokoy as a comedian in a different light and he even talks about his struggle with his first Netflix Special. I dont think it was too dragging, I think it was something he feels like it had to be said. He is also a father so in retrospect he mightve also wanted to do it as a message for his son and the young people.

Loved it!

Comedy at its peak
NiezyFlicks17 October 2022
What would comedy be if it's not pushing boundaries? If it doesn't have a chance of offending someone? If it doesn't tell truth to it?

Jokoy looks back and tells a background story about his first show on Netflix, and turns it into comedy. At the time, it was probably the scariest moment in his career: trying to make it as a comedian, and risking all his livelihood in this one show. He compared his experience with a white counterpart, where an exec saw the asian accent as racist and the white accent was normal. He's pushing boundaries here. And he did offend many. But he told the truth via his experiences that many could relate. Truth be told, many Asians don't think that the bits he does with an accent is racist, but actually relate-able. His point is that systemic racism is brought up by not having representations of other cultures, and he lived through it to tell the tale.

Among the other themes are: empowering women, minorities, and deconstructing cliché topics.

How he uses comedy to bring light to the topics he brings up is just comedy at its peak.

Unrequested Review
MyRealtorYambo23 October 2022
This is the same set he had when I saw him in Tampa! When I tell you it was my favorite comedy show I've ever seen in person or TV! I'm rewatching it and still laughing. (Not as much but I love seeing that he is using the same jokes he practiced and perfected on this Netflix special) I've been waiting to see if he did the same thing and now I can't wait for my dad to see it. He was talking directly to him for half the show!

When I tell you, live!, I was in tears yo! JoKoy is my favorite comedian right now and top % of all times. I can't think of my top 5 right now but I will find a way to put him in it. Because dude is incredible. I hate COVID jokes but he had some good ones! He is just hilarious.

Watch it! If you don't laugh, you're loss. He is funny as hell!

Disappointing
jgartin-0547721 September 2022
I have followed and loved Jo Koy for a long time. This special was only comedy for about half the show then a full tantrum about not being picked up by Netflix for what seemed like an hour.

Jo, what do you say to comedians like Jorge Lopez, Carlos Mencia, Russel Peters, the Kings of Comedy and a slew of other comedians who aren't white and have had specials on Netflix and network TV shows. Someone saying no to you isn't systemic racism its just life. Honestly the special who asked you not to have the accent was probably worried about getting fined or canceled because of your joke. You have lived in LA to long.

Please you fans are begging you to do comedy, we love comedy to laugh and get away from reality not to hear a Joe Biden 60 minutes interview.

One of my favorite comedians. Exellent special.

Warning: Spoilers
Always a very inspiring comical man.

Story's about things that might seem like small details but are the things we could relate from our childhood. Adding twist of fun and involving the audience into his bits.

Does get into some serious topics... As he does joke about it. Does mention his struggle to get to where he is at today. Mentioning that race is still an issue , as i agree with him... Even his examples where clear on to the "why" the small details matter into the fact some have an advantage at life and others need to work harder and more persistently to get what they want.

I thought that wad a beautiful touch to the show. But i certainly know theres always a group of ignorant people crying out it dosent belong in a stand up. I certainly think if a singer can take a few moments to say what they believe in a comedian certainly can too.

There so much people that want to dim the light of others that want to make a change in the world and i find that absolutely disgusting.

Not only does he know how to work a crowd with happiness and laughter, you can tell he can sway them also to be into the moment and to make us all feel like we are all human and can all be in the same room and enjoy eachother regardless of race culture hate ect.

Idk about you but if you believe in good people i think this guy is the right one to root for.

Its the effortlessness of just being a good story teller and funny remarks of how he feels about things that make things so unbelievably funny.

I just cant get enough of this guy, he is awesome. I hope to see more of him in the near future.

If you have anything negative to say, its out of pure jealousy , he is absolutely on point. Period.

Hilarious!!!
autumnmoon-6794818 September 2022
Funniest special so far!!! Could not stop laughing. Highly recommend! He really has a gift, I have not found a funnier comedian out there hands down. I love how he brings stage presence with audience interaction and impeccable timing. I was scared to have a stroke from laughing so hard in this one.

Love everything about JoKoy! I don't know how anyone can not laugh at his performance to be honest. Every joke right from the start was remarkable. Pandemic to 80's- 90's growing up to health conditions. He is a legend and will go down as such! Stand up comedy at its best. Keep doing what you do Jo! We love you!!!

a roller coaster of emotion!!
ronnellcordero21 September 2022
This is one of the best stand up by Jo Koy!

It's a roller coaster of emotion, will make you laugh, will make you inspired, will make you cry, some real talk and all that. It's very entertaining compare to previous jo koy shows. You will feel that he put a lot of effort to make this show as entertaining as possible. If you like Russel Peters shows in Netflix, you will enjoy Jokoy shows.

I don't understand the low rating here. The show deserved a rating more than 8-10. I really enjoyed the show and it's been awhile I laugh this hard. I recommend to watch it at night, get a popcorn and enjoy the show.

Funniest Jo Koy Show We've Ever Seen; Plus Some Room for Improvement
filamtrophy17 September 2022
I am a Filipino-American (or Fil-Am). I am fluent in English and Tagalog (the Filipino language). I partially grew up in the Philippines, and partially grew up in the States. I am a blend of both cultures.

I really hope Jo Koy will read my review. He needs to know certain things from a Fil-Am like himself.

I will use the Clint Eastwood version when I do my review...I will use the good, the bad, and the ugly.

The Good: "Jo Koy: Live from the Los Angeles Forum" is by far the funniest stand-up show that Joy Koy has ever done. He beats the other Joy Koy shows by a wide margin. My wife and I were in tears the entire time. There was no pause in the laughter in the first 50 minutes. When Jo Koy went from one joke to another, we just kept on laughing. We could not believe it!

Jo really emphasized the mask-wearing during the pandemic. We all related to his ordeal; and because we have been there, done that, everything he said was hilarious! Way to go, Jo Koy!

His facial expressions when he mimicked a guy with sleep apnea, while snoring, making noises, was worth the price of admission! Like I said, we were in tears.

The Bad: He kept on picking on that guy with the sleep apnea gig. For comedy to be the most effective, you can pick on a guy, but do not spend too much time on that one guy. The audience will feel for him, and empathize with him. Pick on other people too. Spread the wealth.

Beating up on Netflix can be perceived as a foul, even if Netflix gave Jo Koy permission to do that. Netflix must reject many proposals. Jo Koy should know this. I am betting there are hundreds of proposals that Netflix receives, PER DAY! Netflix cannot accept all of them. There are too many offerings, but not enough time slots and bandwidth. Yet Jo Koy took it personally. That is a pride issue.

It seems like Jo Koy's head is getting bigger. No, not literally. I meant figuratively. Because he is becoming more and more popular, he is coming across as slightly egotistical, when he kept saying, "I should be getting an Emmy" repeatedly. A person is admired the most if he is still humble, and/or came from humble beginnings. Other people should say that he should win an Emmy; he should not say it himself.

Telling Tommy Lee of Motley Crue that Filipinos sing better than him (Tommy)? Oh wow. That is not really a good representation from a Fil-Am. Those Filipinos would not be singing Motley Crue songs if Tommy Lee never existed. I know it is all jokes, but that makes Filipinos look bad when you criticize a popular icon at his expense.

The Ugly: He kept harping on his mom's bathroom habits and hygiene. It was funny at first, but it became gross after a while. Also, the audience will have a bad perception of a comedian making fun of his mother. Even though Jo Koy probably asked his mother's permission to use her for these jokes, and I am sure she was okay with it, that does not change the fact that people will perceive that differently. It is all about perception...perception is reality, even though it is not the truth.

Jo Koy brought up systemic racism, and that it is a foul here in America; yet he mentions that in Korea you will get lost, and no one will help you get to a Starbucks, while in the Philippines, you will not get lost, because Filipinos will help you. As a Fil-Am, I was ashamed that Jo Koy mentioned this. Why would he insult Koreans like that (even though he was only joking)? That is a racist thing to say. Korea happens to be in better standing than the Philippines. Philippines is third-world; South Korea is first-world. South Koreans are up there with the States, with their technology, their cleanliness, their entertainment (K-Dramas and K-Pops). When I was in Korea, all the Koreans I met helped me get to where I needed to be. We Filipinos can learn a lot from Koreans.

If you are going to make fun of Koreans, then do not bring up "systemic racism." It makes you look bad.

Overall, though, I really really enjoyed this Jo Koy feature. Again, this is the best one of them all; the funniest of them all. Hence, a 9 out of 10. If the "Bad" and the "Ugly" never happened, this would have been a solid 10 out of 10.

Keep up the good work Jo! Continue to make us Fil-Ams proud! Mabuhay!

0.1% funny, 99.9% nothing
stevankostic31 October 2023
I didn't write so many reviews in my life but this show made me do it.

I love watching stand ups but this show was not even average. It was a show only to take some many and stitch any topics in order to deliver "anything", but it is not even funny.

Topics are bizarre and not funny at all, Jo koy is taking his time with too long pauses, repeating things over and over in order to spend more time since scenario is weak so he decide to spend that time in an unnatural forced laugh. Topics about his parents are on so low level like he didn't know about what to write... then he spend more then 15 minutes talking about toilet paper. He didn't have a clue about what to talk about so he talk about lowest topic level out there. Nothing to watch here. Very disappointing!

Not much to laugh about here....
paul_haakonsen15 September 2022
I didn't even know that Jo Koy had a new comedy special out until I randomly stumbled upon it on Netflix. And I do find Jo Koy to be a funny comedian, so of course I opted to sit down and watch this 2022 comedy special.

And I was expecting a good show, because Jo Koy usually delivers when he steps up to the microphone.

Well, I will say that this new show sort of fell short of being all that entertaining and funny for me. The jokes he brought to the stage for this special just wasn't really bringing laughs to me. Sure there were a couple of good jokes throughout the 74 minutes that "Jo Koy: Live from the Los Angeles Forum" ran for, but the show as a whole just didn't really turn out all that funny.

Jo Koy still does have his usual great on-stage presence, without a doubt, and he does look and feel natural on the stage. Just a shame that the jokes were mostly a swing and a miss for entertaining me.

This 2022 comedy special is not among the best of his material, if you ask me. And this is not a show that I will be returning to watch a second time. It sort of felt like the air was seeping out of the Jo Koy balloon, so to speak.

My rating of "Jo Koy: Live from the Los Angeles Forum" lands on a four out of ten stars.

Was good till it wasn't.
fxbkmdyfx29 September 2022
The first half was great with lots of what I would expect from Jo Koy. Then he went into preaching mode talking about systemic racism and how hard it was for him. I wish I had it as hard as Jo Koy. Sorry maybe make that a fifth as hard as Jo then I would still be a millionaire. Very sad to see him implode his career this way. Do comedy. That's what people want to see. If they wanted preaching they would attend a rally somewhere.

Sad to say this will be the last time I watch anything from Jo Koy. Hopefully his loyal fans will keep him afloat but it won't be me anymore.

If you do watch this you can skip the second half.

Another celebrity claiming racism when his net worth is over 5 million...
pleaseuninstallnow19 September 2022
I thought this show was funny until he brought up systemic racism. It occurs about an hour into the special. Jo Koy is just another celebrity claiming that white people have it easier in this country when his net worth is more than 98% of white people in America. And the sad part is, the majority of Americans will sympathize and agree with him because this country is filled with mindless minions who idolize Hollywood and its "elites." Boy do I wish I have Jo Koy's problems, let me tell you. So if you're white, especially if you're male, and you want to feel guilty, please by all means watch this.

Super Disappointed!!!!!
pjhdec10 September 2023
I went to the show in Calgary Canada Sept 9,2023 and was really disappointed. It felt like I was in a church with some reverend ranting about life issues!! 30 minutes rant on follow your dreams!! Like what has that got to do with comedy??Joe has some good material but more then half the show was ZERO jokes and ranting about how to be a person as well as excessive bragging about being rich!!

Joe stick to jokes and your filipino accent that's what made you funny.

$100 a seat was expensive for this show I would not waste my money . I will never go see Joe again!!

My advice to him stick to what made you funny on TicTok in the first place. TERRIBLE show!! Read reviews wish I had.

Not great as previous shows..
ajikude22 November 2022
Disappointing actually. His previous shows were excellent. He takes a very anti-mask perspective which is bordeline pushing a fake news agenda. If masks dont work when why do surgeons and nurses wear masks? His jokes now are becoming more and more low IQ, tailoring to the ignorant more and more. Whereas before his jokes were more funny.

America really had the whole pandemic management in a mess. I have asthma and out doctors all advise us to wear a mask in high infection areas like hospitals or during pandemic .

Jokoy with his tippex teeth now is just not as great as it used to be. Very disappointing.

Another Preach Fest.
bitcoinbear18 January 2023
Seems to be a common theme over the last year where comedians feel the need to preach. KoyJoy was no exception. The first half of the show was mediocre leaning heavy on covid masks gags and transitioning into bizzar Philippino culture jokes about his mother cleaning herself after peeing. Then it moved on to his sob story about how Netflix refused to pickup the cost of his first specail. This somehow showed systemic why racism needs to be squashed out. A muti millionaire crying how hard it is for his nationality to succeed falls on deaf ears. To rap things up the show finished up with a rant on how therapy is needed and people should embrace it. Look when I toon into a comedy show I want to laugh and forget about life for a while not be preached too by a mediocre comedian. Pass on this show if you want to laugh.

Disappointed. Not the Jokoy I used to enjoy.
bdfwgf3 December 2022
Nov 25, 2022 Long Beach, his jokes as he gets older, have gone dirtier and dirtier. The complaints about Netflix I've heard so many times just goes on and on and on. The sermons or what he calls motivational speech is not what I paid for. If I wanted that I'd go to church, if I wanted singing I'd go to a concert. If they advertised Netflix complaints, sermons and dirty jokes I wouldn't have bought tickets for his show. I went to his show to hear his jokes, but very few of them are clean anymore. Making fun of peoples belief or because they live with their parents, it's okay to a point. He just goes on and on. He spends so much time on each topic it's literally painful and awkward to hear.

This JoKoy fan left disappointed.
tucsonsooner25 April 2023
As others have said, the 2023 World Tour was part comedy for a bit and then a whine fest about how hard he had to work compared to young people today. That and his obsession with Netflix. The show was less comedy and more story time (and not in a particularly funny delivery way). You've been warned. If you choose to buy tickets, lower your expectations. I spent one night of my vacation on this and would've been better served just enjoying a nice dinner.

As for his diatribe on young people today having it so easy, I would say that young people today have a better understanding of how easy it is to become irrelevant if you don't stay on your "A" game. JoKoy brought a "D" game this time. Many more of these and it won't end well. (And I am a tad older than him so I promise I wasn't offended. I was bored...).

Was Ok
zrbvg10 December 2022
Honestly this show was definitely one of my least favorite by Jo. Kind of funny in the beginning but then turned into a rant about inequality and blah blah blah. It's a comedy show. Don't turn comedy into an argument for inequality. Comedy is supposed to pick fun at whatever you want to, not to use as a platform for social advice on how to practice functionalism.

Jo branches a bit and makes some pretty out-there jokes and pushes the boundaries successfully by making jokes that really make you explore the limits of what you find "funny".

Just keep making jokes and keep the social progressivism for the news platforms, please.

Funny enough, especially reminiscing about the pandemic years, through which we all suffered. Having been married to a Filipino for a couple decades, I loved hearing about his mother, because that was my mother in law. Loved hearing about the culture, because I married into that culture and my daughter was raised in that beautiful and colorful culture. Then.... He had to go there. Victimhood. Because Netflix wouldn't pay for his very first special and blaming systemic racism. I guess never in history has a white comedian had to actually earn their way to the top? Lazy, offensive, boring. Do better, Jo.

"We all need therapy."
classicsoncall30 September 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I never heard of Jo Koy before watching this Netflix special, I just randomly picked it out of the stand-up offerings on Netflix. He started our reasonably well enough with his tirade against being cooped up during the two years of Covid and wearing masks. But as the show progressed, the language became more and more littered with the 'f' word until it hit its lowest point discussing a topic most folks would never have heard about unless you frequent porn on the internet. Worse still, he used the 'joke' on a member of the audience, harmlessly at first, but tying in the subject following his statements about sleep apnea and wearing one of those CPAP machines. Apparently, the audience wasn't put off by his routine as much as I was, but then again, the camera never panned to anyone with an uncomfortable look on their face and squirming in their seat, which I'm sure there must have been at least a handful. You'd think I was a prude judging by this review, but I don't think a comic has to sink so low in order to be funny. Having seen Jo Koy once I think I've had my fill, he won't get my attention again.
