Loving Adam Sandler means making your peace with the actor's wildly inconsistent output. It's not like The Sandman has ever been a critical darling; even during his rise to superstardom in the '90s, "Happy Gilmore" and "The Wedding Singer" were the only movies of his that you could reasonably call well-reviewed (and that's coming from an ardent "Billy Madison" defender). But the films that he's churned out under his Happy Madison Productions, which was founded in 1999, have been all over the place quality-wise. Even most die-hard Sandlites probably wouldn't go to the mattresses over stinkers like "Jack and Jill" and "Grown Ups 2."
That's only become doubly true since Sandler entered his alliance with Netflix in the 2010s. Sometimes, you end up with little more than "content" for viewers to stream and immediately forget, but you can also get remarkably good stuff like "The Meyerowitz Stories (New and Selected...

Adam Sandler may be revisiting one of his most beloved comedies almost 30 years later.
The “Spaceman” and “Uncut Gems” star is said to have developed a script for “Happy Gilmore 2,” a sequel to his iconic 1996 film. Original actor Christopher McDonald said during Audacy radio show “92.3 The Fan” that he saw a draft of the script.
“I saw Adam [Sandler] about two weeks ago, and he says to me, ‘McDonald, you’re going to love this,'” McDonald said. “I said, ‘What?’ He says, ‘How about that,’ and he shows me the first draft of ‘Happy Gilmore 2.'”
McDonald aded, “Maybe you should cut that out [of this audio] because I don’t want to be a liar, but he did show me that, and I thought, ‘Well, that would be awesome.’ So, it’s in the works. Fans demand it, dammit!”

Zoe Lister-Jones is coming out.
The 41-year-old actress and filmmaker spoke to THR at the Spirit Awards on Sunday (February 25), where she opened up about her romantic life.

The announcement comes after her divorce from artist and filmmaker Daryl Wein, who she was married to from 2013 to 2022.

Zoe Lister-Jones was proud to attend Sunday’s Spirit Awards, and the reason is twofold. First, the multihyphenate talent turned up in Santa Monica to support a pair of nominations for Roku’s Slip, the original series she created, starred in and executive produced alongside a team that includes Dakota Johnson. Reason No. 2: She did so by walking into the event hand-in-hand with a new love in her life.
When the subject of her plus-one came up during an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, the 41-year-old Lister-Jones responded with a big reveal: “I’m here, I’m queer, I have some fear but I’m working through it.” Lister-Jones is in a new relationship with a fellow filmmaker, Sammi Cohen, who most recently directed Netflix’s You Are So Not Invited to My Bat Mitzvah, the teen comedy starring Adam Sandler and family including wife Jackie and their daughters Sadie and Sunny.

Adam Sandler has set a new comedy special at Netflix — this time directed by Josh Safdie.
The project continues Sandler’s string of collaborations with Safie, who co-directed him in 2019’s “Uncut Gems” alongside his brother Benny Safdie. Sandler also starred in the brothers’ 2020 short film “Goldman v. Silverman” and is set to lead an upcoming feature set in the world of sports memorabilia to be directed by Josh and produced by Benny, though the latter told Variety in January that the film was “on pause.”
Currently untitled, the special will be Sandler’s second at Netflix, following up on his 2018 set “100% Fresh” — which went on to receive a 90% fresh score on Rotten Tomatoes. Sandler has worked on numerous projects for Netflix: In 2023, he led the voice cast of the streamer’s animated musical comedy film “Leo” and starred opposite Idina Menzel in “You Are So Not Invited To My Bat Mitzvah,...

Following The Film Stage’s collective top 50 films of 2023, as part of our year-end coverage, our contributors are sharing their personal top 10 lists.
In 2023, I wanted to laugh. Perhaps more than I realized, because when I finally calculated my top-rated films that came out this year, a great portion of my selections turned out to be either straight-up comedies or gripping comedy-dramas. 2023 was the year I embraced funny and moving movie coming-of-age stories probably more than any other, but to me, that genre isn’t only limited to what happens when 11-year-old girls experience their period for the first time or when Elvis Presley decides to take a child bride. For example, Paul Giamatti’s acidic classics teacher experiences something like a middle-aged puberty when he’s forced to care for an abandoned prep school kid during Christmas break in The Holdovers. In Beau is Afraid, we watch a stunted...

George Clooney and Adam Sandler will team up in a new Noah Baumbach movie for Netflix that’s still untitled, Variety has confirmed.

Leave it to Adam Sandler to deliver the animated surprise of the holiday season with the “SNL”-influenced “Leo” (currently streaming on Netflix). It’s a smart, funny, existential musical comedy about a jaded 74-year-old class pet lizard (voiced by Sandler), who dispenses advice to Florida fifth graders. It’s also a return to the indie roots of his last animated musical, “Eight Crazy Nights.”
But “Leo” is more personal. It’s the second Sandler family affair this year, following “You Are So Not Invited to My Bat Mitzvah”: Sandler’s wife, Jackie, and his daughters, Sunny and Sadie, voice characters in the film. In fact, the genesis of the project occurred when Sandler put on “Grease” for his daughters when they were tweens and realized that it was inappropriate.
That got Sandler thinking about doing a musical comedy centered around “Grease” for the fifth grade with long-time collaborator,...

Adam Sandler’s daughter Sunny Sandler is now a movie star in her own right, but before she had a clear sense of how Hollywood works, she wasn’t thrilled about seeing her dad kiss actresses for his films.
Sandler appeared as a guest on The Jennifer Hudson Show on Tuesday to promote his new Netflix animated feature, Leo, in which his daughters, Sadie and Sunny, join him in the voice cast. He and Hudson reminisced about co-starring together in Netflix’s 2017 title Sandy Wexler, with Hudson remembering that her son, David, who was 6 years old at the time, was confused as to why she was kissing her co-star in a scene.
For his part, Sandler responded that his own daughters have sometimes struggled with seeing him smooch actresses for his projects, with Sunny, now 15, having had a stronger reaction to it than her older sister, Sadie, now 17. Sunny and...

An animated semi-musical sees the comedy star take on the role of agony uncle for struggling kids in a sweet if a little disjointed tale
Earlier this year, Adam Sandler’s high-volume, low-quality Netflix deal gifted us with the surprisingly sensitive coming-of-age comedy You Are So Not Invited to My Bat Mitzvah, a rare critical win for his company, Happy Madison. It might not have reached the heights of the year’s other big pre-teen adaptation Are You There God, It’s Me Margaret? but it was sweeter and subtler than most expected and became his best-reviewed film to date on Rotten Tomatoes, an interesting use of his sway at the streamer.
It might have been focused on middle schoolers but it represented a maturity absent from so many of Sandler’s tiresome films on Netflix, a platform he initially collaborated with because it rhymes with “Wet Chicks”. His latest Leo sits comfortably alongside,...

At a comedy show on Wednesday, actor Adam Sandler paused his performance to make sure an audience member was okay.
In a video captured by a fan, Sandler pointed the medical personnel to the person from the stage. He directed, “Okay, here we go – oh wait up guys, right down there. On the left. Let’s go.”
Medical staff made their way into the audience with a stretcher in tow. “Alright, let’s get there, y’all. Everything should be alright. Alright, alright, alright…. We’ll be a few minutes, guys,” Sandler said.
He told the crowd, “Let’s take a few seconds, we’ll just let these guys concentrate, alright? Love y’all.”
Once sure that the audience member had received the appropriate care he needed, Sandler said, “We’re all wishing you well there, youngster, feel better back there. Sorry about that… I hope everybody’s good, everybody’s alright.

“What’s your favorite Jewish movie?” This is not a question you often hear. Ask it and you’re likely to get a furrowed brow, a scrunched nose, and then finally a, “Uh… ‘Schindler’s List?’”? Same goes for theater (“Fiddler on the Roof?”) and television (“Maisel?”). We don’t have a lot of options when it comes to Jewish stories onscreen, and the ones we do have are most often stories of strife, persecution and victimhood. The pickings are slim.
Look, I understand that the Jewish people are the most minor of minorities— we make up roughly 2% of the U.S. population — so I don’t expect to find thousands of high-profile Jewish stories every day in every medium. But at this moment within our culture, when the entertainment industry is being flooded with the palpable vibrating energy of so many minority communities rightfully surging forth to take up space,...

Since the early days of his career on "Saturday Night Live," Adam Sandler has established himself as one of Hollywood's most prolific actors, producers, and filmmakers - not to mention comedians! Adam's versatile approach to comedy along with his recurring collaborations with friends on screen draw audiences to his movies and keep viewers coming back for more. The "Hustle" star is known for bringing his fellow actor and comedian friends to star in his film projects, like Kevin James, Chris Rock, Rob Schneider, and David Spade. But he notably incorporates his family - especially his wife, Jackie Sandler - into his movies as well.
Recently, Jackie played a particularly big role in Adam's latest Netflix movie "You Are So Not Invited to My Bat Mitzvah," which also stars their daughters, Sadie and Sunny. She also voices a character in Adam's upcoming animated feature, "Leo," which also includes their two daughters.

If you’ve ever wanted to see Adam Sandler play a septuagenarian talking lizard, then Netflix’s new Leo trailer is for you. Check out the preview of the animated musical comedy ahead of its November 21st release date below.
In the film, Sandler stars as the titular 74-year-old lizard, who has shared a terrarium with a turtle named Squirtle (Bill Burr) in the same Florida classroom for decades. After learning he only has a year left to live, the jaded pet plots an escape to the outside world, but ends up bonding with the students in this year’s class instead after they find out he can talk. “This is a tough time, but these are the best years,” he tells one student.
Leo was directed by Robert Marianetti, David Wachtenheim, and Saturday Night Live alum Robert Smigel, the latter of whom co-wrote the movie with Sandler and Paul Sado.

Netflix animated “Leo” stars Adam Sandler as an elderly lizard living in a Florida classroom who decides to escape after being told he only has one year to live.

Halloween is spine-chilling in general, but especially so if you’re a parent.
The amount of calories you consume while stealing your children’s hard-won candy? Gasp. Running out of sweets when there’s a minibus worth of spooky kids at your front door? Whimper. The price of Halloween costumes they’ll grow out of by Christmas? Scream.
You’d be better off extinguishing the pumpkin, barricading the door and curling up with one of these family-friendly Halloween movies instead – from animated delights to cult classics – which all fall under the ooky-spooky rather than blood-and-guts end of the scale.

The summer of Suits continued past Labor Day, as the legal drama set a streaming chart record for most weeks as the No. 1 overall title.
The former USA series, which streams on Netflix and Peacock, spent its 12th consecutive week at the top of Nielsen’s rankings, which go back three years. It had 2.36 billion minutes of viewing for the week of Sept. 4-10, falling by only 4 percent from the previous week. Suits‘ 12th week at No. 1 overall broke a tie with Netflix’s Ozark, which had 11 weeks at No. 1 over several seasons.
Five titles had more than a billion minutes of viewing for the week, with Netflix’s Virgin River (1.92 billion minutes of watch time) coming in second behind Suits. One Piece (1.39 billion minutes), the streaming debut of The Little Mermaid (1.37 billion) and Swat (1.04 billion) — which jumped 62 percent week to week — also crossed that threshold.

Suits is on its way to breaking another Nielsen streaming record.
The USA Network series marked another week atop the Nielsen streaming charts for the week of August 28 to September 3. With nearly 2.5B minutes viewed (down slightly from the week prior), the series tied with Ozark for the record for most No. 1 overall finishes ever on the overall Nielsen chart.
It’s worth noting that Suits achieved this in 11 consecutive weeks while Ozark achieved such a feat over all of its seasons. If Suits maintains its position for one more week, it will officially surpass Ozark for the title.
Meanwhile, Netflix also has something to celebrate with the release of its live-action manga adaptation One Piece during this interval. The eight episode series came in at No. 2 on the overall chart and No. 1 among originals with 1.3B minutes viewed. This is certainly a win for Netflix, which leaned heavily into...

Netflix’s One Piece sailed to the top of the original streaming series rankings in its first week of release. Suits, meanwhile, maintained its grip on the top of the overall charts.
One Piece, a live-action adaptation of the beloved manga and anime, delivered 1.31 billion minutes of viewing in the United States for the week of Aug. 28-Sept. 3 (it premiered Aug. 31). It ranked first among original series in the weekly rankings, bumping Who Is Erin Carter? (1.02 billion minutes) from the top spot.
The 1.31 billion minutes for One Piece equates to 21.85 million hours of viewing in the U.S. — a little under 16 percent of the worldwide total Netflix reported in its own top 10 rankings for the week. (Nielsen and Netflix use different methods to calculate viewing time.)
Suits racked up another 2.45 billion minutes of viewing on Netflix and Peacock and remained the top overall title in the rankings for the 11th straight week.

The fourth and final season of “Sex Education” has toppled “One Piece’s” reign atop Netflix’s global top 10 list of the most-watched TV series of the week.
“One Piece” held onto the coveted position for three weeks in a row. But on Tuesday, the streamer revealed it had been topped by the final season of the comedy “Sex Education,” which brought in 12 million views. It was then followed not by “One Piece” but by Season 2 of the true crime docuseries “Murdaugh Murders: A Southern Scandal,” which debuted in its first week with 7.6 million views. Season 1 of the series also re-entered the weekly list, bringing in 2.4 million views.
After “Sex Education” and “Murdaugh Murders,” “One Piece” took the No. 3 spot with 6.2 million views followed by Season 5 of “Virgin River” in...
