Gangnam Zombie is the latest single-location horror flick about the walking dead. The gravely serious opening sequence, which is a preview of what’s to come for these sudden survivalists, doesn’t quite convey the movie’s overall tone, though. As a whole, zombie apocalypses tend to mean serious business, but here you should expect to see more silliness than unadulterated thrills.
It’s Christmas Eve when an office building in the Gangnam District of Seoul becomes a festering zombie hotspot. Yet before the flesh-eaters even show up, this cast of unlucky characters is fighting to stay alive in a post-Pandemic world. In fact, the trouble begins when two crooks hope to find something valuable inside a shipping container from China. Instead they discover a feline stowaway whose bites turn one of the criminals into patient zero. As things tend to go in these kinds of movies, the infection spreads and chaos ensues.

Another day, another zombie movie. It seems like we just made a list of sinister shows that included too much zombie content, and we have yet another. Gangnam Zombie joins the likes of Train To Busan, Happiness, All Of Us Are Dead, Kingdom, and so many more zombie shows and movies of the past few years. While there’s no denying that Korea really knows how to shine through with zombie movies, this one may be one that is forgettable at the least and comical at best. Gangnam Zombie tackles some important taboos in Korean society but just brushes over them without any real thought. After finishing the movie, it feels like they were forced in there on a whim. Also, the film could’ve done without the inclusion of the Coronavirus which appears to be done in poor taste and no real connection to the plot. Anyway, let’s get straight into Gangnam Zombie.

Having made as much of an impact on society as it did, there's little surprise that horror filmmakers have taken inspiration from the recent Covid-19 pandemic in their films. While most notable in indie films than mainstream studio blockbusters, the source is mainly found in American genre fare who have either directly or indirectly referenced the issue.. With the exception of the stellar Taiwanese The Sadness which only tangentially acknowledged the virus, it hasn't been as prominent in Asian cinema until now with direct influences in Lee Soo Sung's latest feature “Gangnam Zombie.”
