The people behind the scenes of the documentaries and nonfiction series at this year’s Emmy Awards sat down with Gold Derby and explain several topics including the first documentary that got their attention and, in the event that they win, what would be their ideal music to play as they make their way to the stage. This was all part of Gold Derby’s Meet the Experts panel on TV Documentaries that included Leah Wolchok (“Judy Blume Forever”), Ryan White, Lucinda Axelsson (“Secrets of the Elephants”), Nikole Hannah-Jones (“The 1619 Project”) and Padma Lakshmi (“Taste the Nation with Padma Lakshmi”).

D.A. Pennebaker made truth musical and brought reality to music.
Legendary documentary filmmaker D.A. Pennebaker died of natural causes at his home at Sag Harbor, Long Island, on August 1, according to Variety. The director and cinematographer of the 1967 Bob Dylan documentary Don’t Look Back, as well as the films Monterey Pop (1968) and The War Room (1993) was 94. He is survived by his wife, filmmaker Chris Hegedus, who was his most consistent artistic collaborator. He was working on his memoir.
Pennebaker's influence on the art of the documentary is immeasurable, but evidentiary. Paradise Lost, Making a Murderer, Fahrenheit 911 and Madonna's concert film Truth or Dare all share the D.A. DNA.
Donn Alan Pennebaker was born in Evanston, Illinois, on July 15, 1925. He was an engineer in the Naval Air Corps during World War II. Before he turned his attention to the camera, Pennebaker attended MIT and...

It’s been 18 years since I escaped the state of Texas, and nothing illustrates how much things have changed in that hyper-conservative stronghold than the rise and near-win of Senatorial candidate Beto O’Rourke in his bid for Senate.
On its surface, David Modigliani’s “Running With Beto” is an inside account of that campaign — reminiscent of Albert Maysles’ “Primary” or Chris Hegedus and D.A. Pennebaker’s more recent “The War Room” — tracing the Democratic Congressman from early speaking engagements where barely two dozen people showed up to his status as a nationally recognized hero and poster boy for the “blue wave” that swept the country during the 2018 mid-term elections. But it’s also the portrait of a state many of us thought we had pinned down, and how its identity is shifting in a positive direction.

People Explains: Who Is Alabama Senate Candidate Roy Moore — and Does He Still Have a Chance to Win?
Almost nothing about Roy Moore’s candidacy for Senate has been without controversy.
First, he challenged incumbent Luther Strange, who had been appointed to replace Jeff Sessions when he was tapped by President Donald Trump to serve as U.S. Attorney General. During the primary, he waved a gun at an election eve campaign rally, lacked support from the Republican establishment and has called Islam a “false religion.”
But none of that scared off Alabama voters on Sept. 26, who supported Moore in the Republican primary runoff for Sessions’ vacated Senate seat.
