One criticism I have of "Southland" is the development of Officer Sherman. He was on track to be a good-hearted cop, but eventually becomes a real jerk; and that begins here. The decision to turn him cynical and somewhat bitter kinda comes outta nowhere. BUt his actions here highlight a relevant theme: this is a video and, and police scrutiny is (or has the potential to be) more acute than ever. The silver lining to Sherman's tour in the gangs division is the addition of Officer Jones (Bokeem Woodbine). He is the perfect dose of humor for this show and his one-liners are always pitch-perfect. I wish they'd use him more consistently than they do.

This is another episode in which the characters are more (far more) interesting than the cases. For instance, Lydia and Reuben put down two separate homicides, but neither one is as engaging as their disagreement over how the job gets done.

It's good but it could have been better

I have only watched two episodes of this show and I enjoyed it. There was something familiar about it. I knew what it was when the credits rolled and I saw Christopher Chulack and John Wells names. It does have a similar vibe as the outstanding "Third Watch" that they also produced, but I don't know if it has to do with the lack of Edward Allen Bernero or maybe because there were less network executives involved but something is missing. Let's acknowledge that for example an outsider opinion could have improved the netflix's season of "Arrested Development" and I think something similar might have happened here. There is action. It draws you in...but we don't really get the chance to connect with the characters' stories, we only see them going from one fire to another, all of them happening in a surreal time frame, which makes the good, exciting, meaningless fun that we can all enjoy. I just think that something more could have come up from all of this.
