Ted Husing offers us insider views of wrestling, ice hockey, gymnastics, and college basketball.

Husing became an early radio broadcaster, first at pioneer station WHN, where he covered politics, breaking news, and football. By 1927, he was one of the ten most popular announcers in the country. When CBS was founded, he was there. Ill health forced him to retire in 1954, and he died in 1962, age 60.

Nice Short

Sport Slants (1931)

** 1/2 (out of 4)

Another decent entry in Ted Husing's sports short, which takes a look at various sports and explains them to people who might not have ever seen them. In this episode we take a look at the rules of wrestling, Lester Patrick explains hockey, gymnasts Adelaide Meyers and Al Jochim go over various flips and we see the St. Johns men's basketball team at practice. I'm really not sure if people in 1931 didn't know about these sports of if the studio was just pumping out any short that they could. Either way, when viewing this thing today there's some nice historical value to them but it's doubtful that the education here is going to work for anyone. It was funny hearing St. Johns talk about as being one of the greatest basketball schools in the country and I'm sure a few jokes could be made at the "serious" sport of wrestling and its rules. It was interesting seeing someone like Patrick as well as getting to see how hockey was played and what it looked like back in the day. I'm sure most will be turned off by this short so it's mainly going to appeal to sports fans.
