The Emperor Norton, They Tell Me, Is Dead

The cable cars, the Golden Gate and Bay Bridges, Chinatown and Fisherman's Wharf, Cicero the Duck and the fogs: Andre de la Varre produces one of his more than hundred travelogues, this one on.... well, you can guess.

They were a very popular genre of short subjects for many decades, and the reasons why are obvious. In 1941, the minimum wage was 30 cents an hour; a train ticket from Missouri to the city by the bay could run a couple of hundred dollars. Travel was a rich man's way of doing business or of spending his leisure time.
