One of the Best Audio Drama's out there!
mrscott1017 December 2011
Yeah I know there are a ton of zombie stuff out there, but this is a very well produced and written audio drama. By far one of the best I have had the pleasure to listen to and participate with other listeners. There's mystery there's suspense and of course there is the "zombies". To find out why I put that in quotations you'll just have to listen. While you are listening check out their interactive forum! This audio drama is about to start on their 3rd season so there is plenty with the first two seasons to catch up on. Don't worry each episode/part is roughly 15-22 minutes long. Just long enough to suck you in and keep you hooked but short enough to listen on your drive in to work or whatever you do after.

Captivating plot, great audio drama
scrapermonkey4 April 2014
I've been listening since 2010 and I tell my friends and family to listen to the first chapter to see if they want to listen further, and so far all of them have liked it. There are some lulls in the story where it seems to go slow, but they put that time towards character development and building up to key events in the series.

For those saying they don't like some of the characters... well, what would happen if you randomly selected around 35 people from a crowd? Would some of them annoy you? Most likely. Just imagine those 35 people being stuck together trying to survive, and of course you'd get conflicts- a lot of them. (Of course there are more characters than just that, but that's just an example.) I think it gives the story a sense of realism. Even the "annoying" characters that remain in the later seasons become less so (become easier to relate to, change of attitude, etc), and end up being more key to the story or are killed.

We're Alive was created with a conclusion of the story in mind, and thus it will end with Season 4, which means it has a steady progression of a story line and isn't dragging on just for the sake of continuing (I'm looking at you, The Walking Dead). The characters have some dumb moments (season 1 and 2), but generally this isn't the kind of show where you feel like breaking the 4th wall to slap some sense into the characters, and they get progressively better at their tactics as the story goes on (their enemies constantly adapt and change, as well).

The story is more than just survival, so don't let the title fool you. It's more along the style of a mystery series, but with a setting of warfare. If you like zombie stories but always wanted something more than repetitive battles and fleeing from a predictable, unchanging foe, then this is for you. The only people I would not recommend it to are those who are easily disturbed by gore or horror stories already.

Truly Amazing. A must listen.
elh51177 December 2011
Honestly if you put an iPod with We're Alive on it in front of me and a TV with Netflix in front of me I'd choose We're Alive every time. The story is centered around the three main characters Michael, Angel, and Saul and progressively adds more and more (or kills off) main story characters. It takes you on a journey through a post-apocalyptic zombie infested LA area. It is full of suspense, thrills, sadness, happiness, every feeling I can think of. I'm not going to go into any details in this review, just going to point out that once you've listened to the first episode.....good luck stopping! And P.S. This makes a 10 hour car ride something to look forward too!

Nothing quite like it.
insanemoviecollector6 August 2012
I love this series. It is a believable horror story. It is acted by a full cast of voice actors and is a thousand times better than any Audio book I have listened to.

I have have jumped out of my skin many times while walking down the street listening to We're Alive because one of the characters have been jumped by zombies or someone has started shooting something.

I LOVE IT.

That was where the review was going to end but IMDb say the review must be ten lines long :(

The only bad thing I would say about it is that you are never quite sure when the next episode will be out but they are FREE and there is over 100 episodes available. So all is good in my opinion.

Absolutely stunning.
rcflexx28 September 2014
This serial audio drama just wrapped with their season finale, and let me tell you, the whole show was a riot from start to finish.

Listening to this on walks, on the train, and in the car is really great; it's an endearing, deep tale with excellent character development and a solid plot. Binge listening to the entire show will take a few days, and it's definitely a worthwhile experience.

After a while, you feel like you really know the characters personally; it's really that engaging. Not having a TV to stare at really allows you to slip into your own head, and this unique take on the zombie apocalypse.

Download it now!

Could have been a 10 but...
wryterzblock26 May 2016
I discovered this by accident, and what an accident it was. I've actually put my other regular podcasts on hold just so I can listen to this story all in one go. I enjoy the zombie stuff tremendously and the story is well-told and even occasionally creepy (and I am not one to scare easily). However... The ONLY issue I have with this series is the portrayal of certain female characters. It was bad enough when the main character had to single her out about five minutes in; you knew at that point she was the designated love interest no matter what. And that would have been fine and good but holy hell was she just about the whiniest character ever. It's kind of hard to root for a relationship when you're fervently praying for one of them to meet a bloody end. It gets pretty annoying after a while, but thankfully the overall story is worth the endless eye-rolling I do whenever this chick starts complaining. The main character also has some d-bag moments, but the more I listen, the more I can't blame him for acting that way, what with having to put up with some of the stuff he's been strapped with. (It doesn't hurt that Jim Gleason has a very nice voice.)

Awesome!
skylah00617 January 2014
I adore this series. I can't get enough of it. The storyline always has an unexpected twist. I mean some things you can totally piece together and you wonder why they don't piece it together faster, but overall this series has everything you could want out of a great audio drama. I downloaded the app on my iphone and listened to it while I was at work. I couldn't put it down. I would even listen to it while driving home in the evenings and I just felt like it was extremely captivating. You really get attached to some of the characters, but it's hard to at the same time because you never know what is going to happen next or who could be killed.

GREAT SERIES!

Never gets old
jjgutie19 October 2019
I've been listing to this podcast for years I'm always drawn back to it. Nothing has come close to what development this show has. The cast makes you feel like your right there. I really feel they have something special here and I hope they can keep up with more material if not I'll be replaying this for years to come. I know there is alot of saturation of zombie material but this is a great take on it please give it a chance you will not be disappointed.

We're Alive - A Story of Excellence.
myeggparty7 December 2011
Before I'd like to start my review, I would just like to point out that this is my first review ever on IMDb, in the 4 years I have been viewing this site. I feel like this should be my one occasion where I write a review; for the benefit of this show.

Over a year ago, I was listening to a podcast called LEOG, which can be found on spill.com. For the past several months prior to this episode of the LEOG, the crew had been raving about We're Alive for quite some time. I was intrigued, as on this specific episode I had to finally cave in and listen.

So I downloaded the first episode. It was a slow start, yet this is not a flaw at all. The show had me hooked straight from the beginning. From there on in, I downloaded the entire show (up until the current episode) and listened to them all as I went on a camp. I've also been listening to each episode as they've been released all year.

The show benefits from a very strong vocal cast. Each actor is not only distinguishable, yet extremely likable. Every word that is spoken throughout the show is never out of place. As well as this, the sound effects add a beautiful subtle effect on the show, as well as chills during those haunting moments. Props to the sound editors, if only I could shake your hand.

Without going into details on the story, the journey in which these characters go through is incredible. I've never cried during anything in my life a part from the Six Feet Under finale, but never had I felt so sad during "The Hive" episode. Make no mistake, We're Alive is full of raw, human emotion.

Before I begin repeating myself, for there is not much to say here without using a thesaurus, I would just like to say that this show is one of the best things I have invested my time in. This is the first review on this site for We're Alive, so I decided to just rush this review for the sake of the show. You don't have to love zombies to love We're Alive. Must listen.

Interesting, But Way too Whiney
he8822 May 2012
I've been listening to the pod-cast that's apparently been going on for a few years now. The first six episodes or so were OK, but I think that had a lot to do with everyone trying to find what their place was and what would happen next. What's become a huge disappointment to me has been this constant yelling and whining like a bunch of school kids. It's difficult to pull for the hero's when they're acting like a bunch of spoiled kids.

As for the general story line. They do have a pretty good story line that at least seems somewhat plausible if there were a zombie apocalypse. However....The dialog isn't always as good as the story. I get the feeling that the writer sometimes has no idea what to use for dialog in a part so it just gets winged in.

I'm a trucker and I do like listening to this at night while driving down the road. It's OK, but it could be so much better with better dialog and less child like bickering

Start listening now!

Excellent audio drama, great character drama, amazing sound production, gripping story. You will be there with the characters from episode 1! Go start listening now.

Wayland Productions made a really unique revival of audio drama format, and what a great one! You will absolutely love and hate some of the characters and don't be worried when you are pressing on the next episode at 2am...we've all done it. I listened on my commute, while cooking, brushing my teeth, exercising, eating, working, etc. I might have cancelled a few social events the last week and said I had other important things to do...Went through 48 hours of goodness in one week and now I'm looking for any and all info on the next project from these people.

Probably one of the best audio dramas around
benkobuke3 May 2024
An amazing story with lots of characters that are animated by some fantastic voice actors! The show is very well put together to keep you captivated. I didn't know if I would like it at first but the narration methods used make it so easy and enjoyable to listen to!

The we're alive universe is quite large and diverse with other spin-off content such as lockdown, gold rush and scouts honor. Earlier episodes are a little short but that changes as the show progresses. I recommend this series to anyone looking for a good listen with lots of high-quality content.

I hope to see other fantastic productions from wayland productions in the future!

Best Audio Drama
caseybrookins21 October 2019
I remember that first time I heard this show. It was right after my deployment in the Army. I was riding in my friends car and he was playing it in his car, I was hooked. I had to keep listening to it. It was my first introduction to an audio drama. I listened to We're alive multiple times since 2015. You get very attached to the characters and a lot of character growth in the series. Sound effects make you seem like you are right there with the characters. I reccomend this Audio Drama to all my friends all the time.

Amazing

Warning: Spoilers
The overall arc was amazing I felt that I could actually connect with the characters and what they were feeling. Spoiler ( the only thing I couldn't stand was nick in the decendents) I felt that he was a kinda of shallow character and was so over the top also due in part of that I felt we didn't have tike to really connect with him I tried to be understanding at first because that's how his father was but at a certain point I had just had enough. The only thing I would say could have been alot better was during scenes when there's alot of noise back ground were listening to this we have no idea about what is going in for example when datu got bit I felt that it was super unclear about what really happened until they found him.

*Not zombies* it's way different please listen in!
jasonhebert-1095814 September 2019
If you think this is a show about typical zombies you are very incorrect. It is very well written by K.C Wayland. The man paid for it out of his own pockets wrote it produced it and directed it. They do a great job and they have very talented voice actors. Just listen to a couple of episodes and it will drag you in and you will not be able to let go until you get to the season 5 which is now airing.

Better than an audio book, but not by much. Good thing it's free.
butulaganga20 June 2012
Like other reviewers said, the story is better than the performances. But if you appreciate it for what it is, you'll enjoy it. It's free for a reason. If they charged for the episodes, I doubt they would have the following that they do.

Most of the characters develop nicely and there are some good to great performances found throughout. One exception is Jenna McCombie's (Scratch) performance which is utterly terrible from inception. There are a lot of WTF moments that leave you wondering if the producers listened to final product before publishing.

The sound effects are amateurish but do the job.

In short, it's better that an audio book, but barely.

Top of the hill!!!
taulbeejr10 September 2023
The most rich and compelling storytelling. KC Wayland (writer/director) weaves a great story with wonderfully written characters. You will feel all the emotions listening to the best podcast/audio drama ever made. From the opening chapter of Were Alive we know that there will be action and drama. This would make a very fun live action zombie show. I'm happy to listen and re-listen whenever I can. Better yet, there are spin off shows that make the story even deeper. I would recommend were alive: goldrush, were alive: lockdown and were alive: decendents. Decendents is a sequel series to the original masterpiece. 10 out of 10 highly recommend.

Any other audio drama/podcast is a distant second
TheRomeroZombie5 March 2024
I never thought I'd love an audio drama so damn much. Glued, from beginning to end. Up there with my favorite movies, tv shows, and books. I've listened to the original story numerous times, and never get tired of it. As a matter of fact, just writing this review makes me want to give it another listen. The side stories are great as well, although nothing is better than this original story. I'm jealous of anyone that hasn't already given it a go. Whole lot of episodes, and the first time is so great. Impossible not to binge. The music, sound effects, acting, writing, it's all so good. You truly grow attached to the characters. Unlike I've ever done with characters in any movie or book.
