It starts out with several minutes of credits - and I'm not talking about names on top of scenic landscapes in the background, literally just white text on a black screen. But, at least the original song "Always You" was playing, which I liked. It was very obvious that the story was originally a play and was not adapted much for a screenplay of a movie. There was a lot of dialogue...I mean A LOT. And sometimes it seemed like they were talking in circles or in a translated language because I didn't even understand what they were talking about. It also felt like it didn't have enough characters and lacked a variety of scenery and settings. With such a great cast list and well-known writer/director (for TV anyways), I had higher hopes but there was much room for improvement in terms of making it into a romcom movie.

I had to put on subtitles for this. For a talky romantic comedy with no explosions. Christopher Nolan this is not.
Directors: pay attention to audio. At this point, we're nearly back to silent film with how badly y'all handle this stuff. Movie watchers all watched the explainer about why movie audio is so bad these days. Did movie directors? You should. I don't care if your actors want to sound more "naturalistic" with their mumbles and their whispers. They have a job to do and they are not doing it if I can't hear the words coming out of their mouths.

I grew up with boy meets world and am lucky to call Michael jacobs an acquaintance so I had to support this film, but it was very odd. Like someone else said, it was almost like it was meant to be a play. The plot is basic enough. A couple try to decide if they're meant to be together forever and marry so they bring in their parents. Problem is the parents have been cheating on each other. With each other. It was hilarious at first, especially when everyone all arrived at dinner together, but it slowly unravels. Emma roberts character and her boyfriend basically just disappear from the film at one point. The movie just becomes everyone having inner dialogues, with each other. The movie goes in so many circles and Michael can't seem to decide what he wants to say ultimately. Sadly I can't recommend it. Such a waste of a talented cast too.

Avoid at all costs. Was so excited to see the cast then just couldn't believe it is such a boring long moving about nothing. Nothing happens and everyone is just lost in their own selfish horrible relationships world of messy broken people just wandering around the movie like lost souls. Even the actors look bored acting such a bad script. Shame shame shame. Not worth ur time not worth the plot no feel
Good moment nor jokes nor laughs just a blah blah blah movie that does nothing for you. Just skip it. Wonder what they were thinking when they wrote it. Zero effort given by everyone involved. Booooo.

Give us our time back. The writing was terrible. Almost no one had any chemistry whatsoever. This is especially true for Emma Roberts and Armie Hammer want to be. I was so bored I was counting the minutes to get out of the theatre. I could see it being entertaining in a play but it did not work in a movie. The music did nothing for the film as well as we could not connect with anyone due to how shallow and boring the characters were. Bringing the stories together usually evokes interest and lots of laughs but all this did was bring a chuckle, then it was back to watching paint dry. Frank Gallagher playing Frank Gallagher was the only entertaining part of the entire thing. Diane Keaton gets a shout out too as she was fun to watch. I wouldn't recommend the film to anyone, besides recommending to avoid. An A list cast that would have better spent their times promoting the movie than actually being in it.

The one thing i wanted to comment on about this movie is its dull visual style. There is almost no visual language at all. Every shot lacks almost any dynamism/movement. The color palette is fairly bland. The lighting is purely utilitarian. The weather is not used in any visually suggestive or symbolic way. There is a lot of grey, dark tones, shadows. In short, its dull visual quality only highlights the more talky and pedantic aspects of the script. It was originally a stage play and it's almost as if director Michael Jacobs-whose background is in TV-doesn't realize that a stage is at least well-lit. This is his directorial debut so I'll cut him some slack (as though he cares what I think lol), and I will admit I laughed a number of times. Macy gets all the good lines. Gere is stuffy and somnambulistic. Keaton is very good. Sarandon is okay too. I think Luke Bracey was the worst piece of acting in the film, and I imagine it's because he wasn't given enough takes, or that he didn't fully understand his character, which I would cut him some slack for because I didn't fully understand him for most of the film either. So, you can watch this movie, but I recommend stopping in the middle to get to bed and then forgetting to watch the rest.

I knew that MAYBE I DO was in production since last August because it was the new movie in production of William Macy and being probably his biggest fan I couldn't certainly wait for it. Last January it was released and as the weeks passed, the score lowered and lowered up to its current 4,8. On April I saw it and as I watched it, I assumed I was seeing a different movie than the one described in the reviews because I liked it.
Michelle (Emma Roberts) attends the wedding of a friend and she then expects from boyfriend Allen (Luke Bracey) a serious decision about their future together and they have the brilliant idea of organizing a dinner with their parents. There is one small problem: Michelle and Allen's respective parents already know each other too well. In fact Allen's father Sam (Macy) dates Michelle's mother Grace (Diane Keaton), and Michelle's dad Howard (Richard Gere) dates Allen's mom Monica (Susan Sarandon). The families meet, and after the initial horror they discuss and discuss about their past mistakes and accept that their sons have to marry despite the bad examples they gave. Michelle and Allen finally marry, and their parents have all found each other again.
So, is MAYBE I DO that bad? Not really. I agree that the plot might look like recycled from other movies but at least there were some moral lessons given by the end that make you think. The acting was good by all (Macy, Sarandon, Gere, Keaton, Bracey and Roberts) and it's a nice entry in all their resumes. There were some funny moments as well such as: in the beginning Sam is sitting alone in a movie theater, starts to crying and then meets Grace; as the families meet there is some tension and then the parents discuss it in the backyard of their previous mistakes; or also when Sam and Monica meet again after years and they are very surprised.
Overall, don't let the reviews fool you because this is one of those rare movies that manages to be both entertaining and deep, and that is quite a rare thing you can find in movies these days. I guess I was just in the right mood for it and that's why I enjoyed it more than I expected to do.

This movie is bad, not as bad as Rashtons latest disaster Your place or mine, but its bad none the less.
Can someone please put their finger on why movies are so bad these days. Is it the scripts, the producers, the director, or all three? Is it an over supply of content in the streaming age? It can't be the actors because the stars of this film are so accomplished in their own right but even messers Keaton, Sarandon, Gere, and Macy look bored and embarrassed. Not as bored as me though, but then again I wasn't getting paid millions to endure it.
Frankly the film feels like a play, set entirely in about four rooms. The premise of both sets of parents having an affair with each other was unbelievable and their children had about as much chemistry as my pet cat and dog.
Like so many movies these days after staring blankly at the screen for 90 mins you are left asking yourself why? Why did I waste 90 mims of my life on this rubbish.

Definitely not the comedy it wants to be or is portrayed as in the trailer. Awful storyline. Depressing speeches. Forced acting. Awkward interactions for the cast. Painful experience for the audience. Really had high expectations.
Seriously, don't even waste your time, even when it pops up as free on your favorite streaming platform, which I expect to see in a week or so.
The only partially entertaining scene is about 10 minutes in, and it falls flat.
Susan Sarandon looked amazing, so kudos to the costume designer for her wardrobe and style; but it looked like Diane Keaton raided her much larger and frumpier alter ego's closet.

Wonderful little stage play on film with A list cast

It starts a bit slow and I was inclined to either fast forward or stop watching. But the cast is wonderful and elevated the script just enough for me to hang in there. Then the relationships became clear and I thought it could be more interesting than I thought. Halfway I thought: this is a stage play put on film. Past the midpoint I settled in and very much enjoyed the acting. Maybe the script could have been better, adding a bit more humor, deeper insights. But that didn't take away from enjoying this play. Tha may also have to do with the fact that we're 40+ years into our relationship and have battled through a lot only for things to improve and intensify our bond and unleash the love even more. I know that although we worked fr#$#%g hard for it, were also privileged and blessed.

I enjoyed this film much more than I expected. Mostly because of the humour which reminded me of an old-time bedroom farce. I was quite interested in the discussions about love and relationships, although they went too quickly for me to agree or disagree about them.
The acting was very good, of course. I say that even though I'm not a fan of the older Diane Keaton. The 2 older couples made an interesting contrast, one willing to forgive but the other unable to.
I would probably advise my companions in the men's shed not to see this film, too smaltzy. I would probably suggest to the women in pottery that they would enjoy it because it's smaltzy.
The acting was very good, of course. I say that even though I'm not a fan of the older Diane Keaton. The 2 older couples made an interesting contrast, one willing to forgive but the other unable to.

The story isn't bad but the conversations are unbelievably bad. None of them flow and most of time not even believable. I can't imagine anyone one in any of the situations would behave the way every single characters does in every scene. It's like they are all awkward individuals that can't communicate or act appropriately. Maybe one person might be weird and a bad conversationalist, but everyone in the movie? It makes the whole movie hard to get into and believe. I don't think it's bad acting, although it comes off that way, because it's a good cast. I think it is the writing that ruined the whole movie. It seems lazy and not thought out at all. There isn't a single articulate conversation in the whole movie. Such a bummer because the cast is great.

For a short moment i was thinking this wasn't too bad. That didn't last long and things went steadily down hill. The acting is terrible all around. Susan sarandon says she never got a part from an audition. She obviously didn't audition here. The stupid plot goes like this. Cheating spouses end up at dinner with actual spouses and comedy ensues. They are together to save the relationship of their respective son and daughter. The son is having a hard time coming to grips with the reality of marriage. The ending is artificial and awkward. It seems the writers ran out of material and tacked it on. Weird. Save your dough.

This was a movie of such contrived drivel that having to watch 'mature' characters who hadn't learned anything about how to be in this world along the way of their collective 260+ years on this planet made me squirm uncomfortably in my seat that the only saving grace was that the movie came in at 92 minutes in length.
So fed up was I, that without wanting to, a fairly loud sigh of exasperation left my upper respiratory tract and caused the biggest laugh of the night in the theater I attended of this star studded dud of an attempt at movie making. In abysmal NY so-called rom-com "Maybe I Do" Emma Roberts & Luke Bracey (meh) struggle with whether to wed or not, as he doubts true love lasts. The twist is that her dad Richard Gere's having an affair with his mum Susan Sarandon, while her mum Diane Keaton (poor again) had a one night fling (albeit platonic) with his dad William H Macy (the only bright spark here)... then they all have dinner together. If these 'coincidences' aren't implausible enough, it's also bogged in the most awful rambling dialogue that no real person would ever speak. Writer / director Michael Jacobs' first movie is SO painful an experience, it has to be hoped it's his last. A turd. Flush.

I can see why many have given this a low rating. It's a slow paced & mostly serious romance, with only comedic moments sporadically. It's definitely not a rom-com, like it's classified as. There are several awkward moments, where you wonder if real people would actually be that way. Regardless of these things, I still really enjoyed the movie. The main reason could be because I also enjoy period pieces. I'm accustomed to not much happening & slow paced love stories. Most of the actors were amazing in their roles, except for Allen (Luke Bracey). I felt that he just didn't give as much as the rest of the cast. It was like he didn't really want to be there sometimes. Then again, maybe that's what he was going for, since his character didn't want to marry his girlfriend. Or maybe it's the writer's fault for not giving him more lines.
Howard (Richard Gere) was great in his role, especially at the end. And Grace (Diane Keaton), Sam (William H Macy), Monica (Susan Sarandon), and Michelle (Emma Roberts) were amazing in their roles! I felt all of the love, guilt, fear, shame, & uncertainty. It's funny though, because it felt like the affair couples had more chemistry than the married ones. That could be on purpose too though. That the sparks fizzle in marriage of you let them.
What could've made it better for me?
1. Allen & Michelle needed more screen time to show their chemistry. I didn't see much of it & I know those two actors have it in spades. They worked together on another movie before this & woah!
2. I wanted to see Sam be happy & find true love. He was such a sweet man. It looked like he might not get back with his wife, Monica at the end, but it was open to interpretation.
I think everyone should determine for themselves if they like this movie. If you're bored after the first 30 minutes, it might not your cup of tea. I think it's at least worth watching once, if only to see the amazing actors! But would I watch it again? That's how you know if it's fantastic. And honestly, I'm not sure I would. There are several scenes that I'd like to see again. I even rewound them a few times. Lol But probably not the entire movie again.

I can't believe this movie ever made it to the theaters!! Great actors and actresses but wow absolutely not worth the ticket price. I am still in awe how bad this was. Sorry but save your bucks. You can thank me later. Very very slow paced movie and most of the movie takes lace at one location at a house. There was was no zip in the filming of this. I kept looking g at my watch to finally hope this was about over with . There's no excuse on this one. Ugh!! 2 star only for great cast. But sucky story line that could of been way better than that. Too bad this couldn't been better . Should of known when the credits on screen lasted for I swear 10 mins.

The reviewers who gave it such low ratings either didn't watch the whole movie or just didn't get it, because this film was at least a solid 7 if not an 8. Very watchable. The cast was strong and the plot was well acted. The overall message was good. I will probably think about it for a long time. It was better than I anticipated. I even shed a tear, which is more than I can say for some of the romantic comedy swill I've seen lately. Perhaps it is wasn't formulaic enough for the masses, or the ending wasn't quite wrapped up enough in a bow for every single character the way everyone would have wanted? I'm not sure what would have made it better, but I was satisfied. I'd recommend it for a rainy day.

William H. Macy and Diane Keaton play the weakest and lamest characters of their career. I'm still not sure what Richard Gere was supposed to be doing. Susan Sarandon plays one of the nastiest characters and you beg for her to go away every time you see her.
This is the first time I've ever seen Emma Roberts act . . . If you want to call it acting. It was one dimensional . . . Although, I think her character is supposed to be one dimensional and needy. The idea of spending a lifetime married to her is painful to consider.
Don't waste your time watching this movie. You will desperately want the time back to do other things . . . Like cleaning out the lint trap on your dryer.

We thoroughly enjoyed every minute of this movie. Fantastic story and script, perfect casting of characters, lovely dialogues, awesome setting and not a boring moment. What typically happens in such stories is that it either it goes over the top or ends up becoming offbeat. This one plays it perfectly in between with the right amount of scenes without becoming too heavy or ending up too light with the story captured beautifully. Performances by all the big time Hollywood actors are great. Some dialogues that take place between father son and mother daughter are delightful. I reminded them to watch again.

I'm tired of these playwriters messing around with film-making acting as it it was the easiest thing in the world. Florian Zeller did good with the help of his colleague Christopher Hampton, writing the screenplay, and the whole cast, of course, in The Father (2020) but let's be honest this job is not for everyone.
This movie feels like cheap TV, even with the stellar cast. The colors have no mood. The shot angles, mostly have no purpose. They insist in keep them constrained to the constrained theater like sets and set-ups. Even the audio sounds senseless.
You can't just thing "oh, I can do this" and don't rely on competent and more experience creatives.
Have a little more respect for the medium, please. Movies are not just a filmed play and they shouldn't be.

Reviews said it was bad, it was worse

The reviews on this very site said this movie would be bad. "How bad could it be?", I said to myself. Well, bad. Like bad bad. And not even like entertainingly bad. Just time wastingly bad.
The dialogue, storyline, casting, believability and logics in this film where so strange. One single scene in the movie was okay. Made me giggle just a bit. But that was all there was in the 90 long lasting minutes this movie took of my precies time.
Now i need to typ 140 more characters for a movie that aren't even worth that much. Anyway, i would not watch this movie, a movie of this director, with this actors or any people who are involved with this movie ever again.
