See it just to see Joe Penhale show some guts!
planktonrules30 April 2015
The main problem in this installment of "Doc Martin" is Bert Large's problems with a nasty loan shark. Al eventually learns about this but foolishly tries to help his dad somehow pay off the shark-- stupid because the shark is not going to let them off easily. To raise money, Al uses Aunt Ruth's money to pay the loan shark--but the guy STILL demands more money as interest! It's surprising how this is resolved, as Joe Penhale unexpectedly shows some strength in dealing with these parasites.

Additional plots involve a weird cat lady as well as Eleanor showing that she truly is a horrible grandmother. When Eleanor agrees to watch the boy, she becomes interested in a business venture with Bert and soon farms out the child to be watched by various irresponsible teenage girls--the sorts that call the Doc nasty names throughout many of the episodes. By the end of the show, Louisa is angry at Eleanor and Martin.

Nothing super-memorable about this one but again a consistently entertaining episode from a consistently good show.

Transitional Episode
Hitchcoc7 March 2018
This episode takes us along a ride focusing on several characters. We are reintroduced to the loan shark and his son. Burt Large has borrowed 1000 pounds and this guy has come to get his money. He and his son are very threatening. Al takes desperate means to appease these guys and things get worse. Things continue to escalate between Louisa and Martin and her mother make things worse. And Joe actually helps to make things better.

Ruth

Warning: Spoilers
I was not sure about Aunt Ruth at first but I have grown to really like her. Her no-nonsense, balanced approach is very refreshing. She is much much better than Aunt Joan who I found very condescending and know-it-allish!!! I was actually glad when Joan left the show (hopefully for good). She just did not add any value in my opinion. Keep Aunt Ruth!!

despite the Insufferable ...

Despite the Insufferable Eleanor and the cat lady plus Louisa's Irritating attitude , this was a very enjoyable episode - Especially Joe Penhale - I won't spoil It ,but let's Just say he does have the right stuff in him to be a good constable and even heroic.
